November 27 & 28, 2021 First Sunday of Advent WATCHFUL CONFIDENCE We the Church enter into Advent and the new liturgical year with a call for a watchful confidence. Our readings were originally addressed to communities undergoing great loss and confusion. Jeremiah speaks confidently of God fulfilling the ancient promises to Israel, even during a time of foreign invasion. Paul speaks of God leading the Church into holiness, while the community longs for the coming of Jesus. In the Gospel passage from Luke, Jesus speaks of powerful signs and of great confusion to come, but emphasizes that we may look forward knowing that God brings not cause for despair, but hope. We celebrate Advent to remind each other of God’s faithfulness. We are to be watchful, to see how God is stirring up our world. God disturbs both our pride and our complacency, and brings us healing and justice. We prepare ourselves to welcome Jesus, confident that God indeed fulfills all these divine promises. “God is the future of the human person and of the world. If humanity loses the meaning of God, it will close itself to the future and inevitably lose the perspective of its pilgrim journey in time. Why birth, why death? Why sacrifice, why suffering? To these questions, Christianity offers a satisfying answer. For this reason, Christ is the hope of humanity. He is the true meaning of our present, because he is our sure future. Advent reminds us that he has come, and that he will come. The life of believers is a continuous and vigilant waiting for his coming.” -St. John Paul II PRAY FOR OUR FAMILY MEMBERS IN THE MILITARY Jovany Baez, Justin Mertle, María de la Luz Ramírez, Rebeca Sánchez, José Araiza, Jr., Marina González, Alondra Jara, Sonia Jara, Matt Mills & Jared Schroeder. From the Pastor’s Desk Dear friends in Christ, I hope that you and your families had a very Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving! This Sunday we enter into the season of Advent, and we welcome the new beginning it brings to us each year. In these days after Thanksgiving, I want to offer you the words from the spiritual writer Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalen on the theme of gratitude: “Even the poorest beggar, having nothing to give in return for the alms he has received, can always acknowledge a kindness by showing gratitude to his benefactor. This is our position in regard to God: we have nothing of our own; all that we are and have comes from Him, and in return for His infinite generosity, we can do nothing but use His gifts to express our gratitude to Him. ‘In all things give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you all’ (1 Thes 5:18).” As we now turn our attention towards our preparation for Christmas, may we approach the Lord with grateful hearts, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life” (John 3:16). May our hearts be prepared to receive Him anew with gratitude and adoration! Wishing you a blessed and rewarding Advent season, Fr. Pacheco TODAY’S READINGS First Reading The days are coming when the Lord will fulfill the promise made to Israel and Judah (Jeremiah 33:14-16). Psalm To you, O Lord, I lift my soul (Psalm 25). Second Reading May the Lord make you increase and abound In love that you may be blameless in holiness; conduct yourselves so as to please God (1 Thessalonians 3:12 — 4:2).
