This weekend we continue to hear from the Letter to the Hebrews. As early as the second century, this treatise bore the title “To the Hebrews.” Although no author is mentioned (for there is no address), a reference to Timothy suggested connections to the circle of Paul and his assistants. Yet the exact audience, the author, and even whether Hebrews is a letter have long been disputed. Priests played a significant role in Jewish religion, and the high priests served the special role of making sin offerings in the Temple and each year entering the Holy of Holies to offer atoning sacrifice for his own sins and those of the people. For several weeks now, the author of Hebrews has been contrasting the Jewish “Levitical” priesthood with the High Priesthood of Christ. Not only has Jesus’ sacrificial death made Jewish ritual sacrifices unnecessary, the author argues, but Jesus has even rendered the Levitical priesthood itself meaningless, because he himself has become the one and only priest of the new covenant. That might sounds odd, but in Christian faith, every priest shares in the one priesthood of Christ. They have no priesthood independent from his. Just as Christ’s sacrifice, offered “once for all” on the Cross, is made present in every Eucharist, so the one priesthood of Christ is made present in every bishop and priest. Because Jesus is the eternal high priest, the new covenant he initiated has no need for the endless succession of priests required by the old law. Jesus has already accomplished for all time what the high priests had to repeat “day after day.” Further, under Mosaic law, only men “subject to weakness,” that is, sinners, could assume the mantle of priesthood. But Christ, who is “holy, innocent, and undefiled,” has become our eternal priest, perfectly fulfilling “the word of [God’s] oath” – “Like Melchizedek you are a priest forever” (Psalm 110:4).

No hay división en el Amor.

“Un letrado se acercó a Jesús y le preguntó: ¿Qué mandamiento es el primero de todos? Respondió Jesús: El primero es: Escucha, Israel: el Señor, nuestro Dios, es el único Señor; amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón,

con toda tu alma, con toda tu mente, con todo tu ser. El segundo es éste: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. No hay ningún mandamiento mayor que estos.” (Mc 12, 28-34)

Una de las muchas trampas que han acechado -y a veces cazado- a los católicos en estos años del posconcilio, ha sido la de intentar separar el amor a Dios del amor al prójimo. Durante un tiempo, se presentó el amor a Dios como competidor del amor al hombre, e incluso se llegó a decir que, si se amaba al prójimo por amor a Dios, en el fondo no se amaba al prójimo. De este modo se intentó cercenar la raíz del amor, la motivación religiosa. Sin otro motivo que el del amar al hombre por el hombre, pronto ese amor languideció, empezando por dejar de amar a aquellos que no eran “amables”: los enemigos, los antipáticos, los que son de otro país, de otra cultura o de otra religión.

En cambio, los que han resistido la prueba, han visto fortalecido su amor al prójimo, porque cuando el motivo humano para amar ya no era suficiente, estaba aún el enorme caudal del motivo divino. Si no haces las cosas por él -nos dice Dios, refiriéndose al prójimo-, hazlas por mí. Se trata, pues, de comprender que sólo hay un mandamiento: el del amor. Y que este mandamiento único tiene dos dimensiones inseparables: Dios y el hombre. No se puede amar al primero sin amar al segundo y viceversa. Pero el amor a Dios precede al amor al hombre, pues es su raíz, su alimento, su continua fuente de renovación. El amor al hombre, por el contrario, es la prueba de que nuestro amor a Dios es verdadero y no sólo una teoría retórica.

Propósito: Ama a Dios y ama al prójimo. No un amor a Dios prescindiendo de las personas. No un amor al prójimo prescindiendo de Dios.
