TAKE NOTE November 2019 VOLUME 13 ISSUE 4 JOHN HERSEY HIGH SCHOOL BANDS NEWSLETTER Class 4A Champs 4-peat! Congratulations to all of the students, staff and parents for their contributions to a wonderful performance on October 19 at the State of Illinois Marching Band Championships!! Our season's success was the culmination of diligence, hard work and creativity of MANY people. It is apparent that the ideals that make our program successful are far reaching and affect many. It all came together with the best performances of our season on Saturday. Thank you to the students for your sacrifice, commitment, love of music and our program. You welcomed the changes to this year’s marching show and stepped up to new challenges not tackled in previous years. The intensity appeared throughout the day on Saturday. The commitment and sacrifice that you give to one another is a powerful, long-lasting message and one that will last a lifetime. Good luck on your upcoming auditions!! Thanks to the marching staff for your continued commitment to our students and our program. We worked together throughout the YEAR (we began last November……) to develop this show and everyone contributed in a significant manner. We welcomed new people to our design team and staff and the collaboration was inspiring. I thoroughly enjoyed our time in benefit of students and our program. I look forward to maintaining and improving the standard we have set for our program in the future. I know that I speak for everyone in the program in expressing my thanks! Last and far from least, our parents came through in every way. Moving equipment, taking care of uniforms, chaperoning, coordinating food, providing all of that support in the stands (you were LOUD!), participating in fundraisers that allow us to operate at a successful level – THANK YOU. From providing the instruments necessary for success, providing your kids with private lessons necessary for success; for understanding and promoting the value of our program and for encouraging music in your homes - thank you. To the HIA officers that have organized and facilitated so much this season - thank you! Your genuine support has meant so much to me and the entire program. I LOOK FORWARD TO CONTINUED SUCCESS IN SYMPHONIC, CONCERT AND JAZZ THROUGHOUT THE YEAR!! Let's keep making real music..............

As a band, we will once again participate in this mission. This annual event is a great way for us to give back to our community, just in time for Thanksgiving. The food baskets have already been promised to Hersey families in need. Please consider helping us support this cause. Band members will be shopping for the food and preparing the food boxes on Sunday, Nov. 17 from 10am-2pm. We will need some students to help shop and then another shift to prepare boxes in the band room at 1pm. The students will bring letters home with a form to indicate if they will be helping shop and if you are able to commit to a monetary donation. Please return your forms to Luke Podvrsan or Bryan Forrest by Wednesday, Nov. 13. It is imperative that we know ahead of time who will be helping shop and who will be contributing to food basket costs - a signup list will be distributed in class. Thank you for your generosity! See more info on page 20 of this newsletter.

A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to the Marching Huskies on another 1st Place Performance in Class 4A at Illinois State Marching Championship at ISU! The incredible preliminary performance and 7th place ranking overall is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and discipline of the entire band! Keep up the great work as we head into Concert Season!

Thank you to the many parents who worked both behind and in front of the scenes to make this marching season an incredible and fulfilling success! Supporting our students through volunteerism is among the most important tasks we can offer our children and community. Our nominal time and effort has a multifold impact on our students and program that will remain with our children for the rest of their lives as they follow their future endeavors. With vision, perseverance and the support of family and community our student’s reach is limitless.

A special thank you to Julie and David Siegel for generously hosting the Marching Season Parent Volunteer party on 10/25!

As we transition to Concert Season I want to encourage ALL parents to engage in the many volunteer opportunities necessary for the program. Your participation is what enriches the student experience – please let me or Julie Siegel know if you are interested in working with HIA in a chair position or shadow capacity or to assist with organizing our fundraising activities for “In Good Taste” and CICBF – you will not regret it!

Concert Uniform Fittings are coming up in November, please refer to page 10 of this newsletter for Concert Uniform Fitting Dates and Times.

Please keep up to date with email blasts, Reminds, newsletters, and the Google Calendar for updates. Please let Jen Schmidt, HIA Corresponding Secretary know if you’re having trouble with communications, Jen can be reached at [email protected]

Hersey well-represented at IMEA auditions AGAIN.

More than 630 students from 65 schools in northeastern Illinois auditioned for 150 spots on October 3 at Stevenson High School. Hersey auditioned the maximum number of students allowed: 18 for concert band and 12 students for jazz band. Of all students that auditioned, Hersey placed 10 of the 12 jazz students that auditioned into a District Jazz Band (2nd in district) and 11 of the 18 students that auditioned for the Concert Band/Orchestra Winds/Percussion, for a total of 22 band placements in the IMEA District VII Ensembles. Stay tuned at the end of November for All-State results. 41 students pre-auditioned to determine which 30 students would audition for the IMEA ensembles. Students prepared this material on their own outside of class, and their impressive results are a great reflection of their commitment to music. The District VII wind and percussion students will perform at a concert on Nov. 9 at Grayslake North High School. The jazz students will perform on Nov. 23 at Lake Zurich High School. More details will be distributed in class.

Scale Sheet Smartmusic Documents – practice assignment available

All brass and woodwind students have been assigned a “practice assignment” of 10 reps through the scale sheet and 45 short sightreading exercises on Smartmusic. This process will help you assess your performance on these scales, which all students will perform for the largest grade of the semester in their upcoming audition, as well as improving your sightreading skills. The assignment was made available in late September. Remember that scales are graded on a 10-point scale and you lose ½ a point for every mistake during your audition. Extra credit is given for doing both sides of the scale sheet and is required for Symphonic Band members.

Symphonic Band Evening Rehearsals and

Expectations

Symphonic Band will rehearse most Wednesday nights from 6-7:30pm until December and then 6:30-8:30pm from January until their Honor Band performance at Superstate this year. Students interested in Symphonic Band should add the following very important Wednesday night Symphonic Band Rehearsals to their calendars (similar to previous years’ schedule).

Nov. 6, 13, 20 Dec. 3 (small ensembles), 4 (5:30-7pm), 11 Jan. 8, 15, 20 (MLK 1-5pm), 22, 29 Feb. 5, 12, 19 (w/ Dr. Marinello), 26 March 18 April 1 (Wed) and 2 (Thurs – 6-8:30 w/ Mr. Floyd), 8, 22, 29 May 6

We will have a few clinicians work with the band and we will have sectionals on some of these evenings in preparation for our All-state concert, Feb concert, Kennedy Center Concert, the Chicagoland Band Festival in April, our Spring Concert and Superstate Honor Band Concert. All Symphonic Band members are expected to be at ALL concerts listed on our 2nd semester schedule. Please mark your family calendars – a busy 2nd semester this year!

The Scrip Gift Card Fundraiser is a program where you can buy gift cards at face value from Scrip and a rebate from the gift card of 1.5% to 30%, depending on the retailer, goes directly to HIA. HIA then splits the fundraising rebates between your student account (80%) and HIA general fund (20%)! You can use $$$ from your student account to pay for anything like band fees, private lesson fees, trip to Kennedy Center, etc. An easy way to earn money by purchasing gift cards for stores you shop everyday! It is very simple to shop at Scrip. To find out how to sign up for Scrip and other details, click this link: https://herseyband.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Scrip-Gift-Card-Fundraiser-Program.pdf or view the next page of the newsletter. To view a list of retailers, types of cards they offer, denominations and the rebate percentage, click this link: https://herseyband.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ScripRetailersList.pdf The rebate percentage can vary sometimes as Scrip runs daily or weekly specials. You can find these specials when you login to your Scrip account. Scrip offers 3 types of gift card options (depending on the retailer): 1) Physical - Once a month (see payment dates and delivery dates below). Physical gift cards are available one week after the order after school and before marching band rehearsal. 2) Scrip Now/eCard - You can purchase these anytime. You also have an option to send someone a gift (either now or future dated). Electronic gift cards (eCards) are delivered within minutes via email. 3) Reload - If you have purchased a gift card through your Scrip program within the last year, you can reload the card. Scrip offers 2 types of payments: 1) You can link your Scrip account to your Bank Account (PrestoPay™). This is a very convenient option and Scrip only charges a flat fee of $0.15 per transaction. 2) You can send a check to HIA. This option is only available once a month. Note: Scrip is planning to announce that in mid to late August, in addition to linking a bank account (PrestoPay™), families that have access to online payments can choose to pay for gift cards with credit cards. Here are some important details about this new payment option: · Credit card types: Visa and Mastercard will be accepted. · Rebates: The rebate is not impacted—you, and HIA, still earn the same amount. · Purchases: A 2.6% fee is added to your order total each time you pay with a credit card. HIA does not pay a fee. Credit card payments will be processed immediately. If you have any questions, contact Reeta Chhabria at [email protected] or (847) 372-6475. Thank you!

Dear Hersey Band students/parents,

The 2018 Hersey Food Drive has officially kicked off! This annual event is a great way for us to give back to our community, just in time for Thanksgiving. This wonderful tradition has proven to be extremely successful in previous years. Last year, Hersey was able to gather over 40,000 cans and dry food items. One part of the food drive is the Thanksgiving Food Basket Project. This year, as a band, we will again participate in this mission. These food baskets include specific non-perishable food items off of a list that ensure the recipient a few decent meals. These boxes have already been promised to Hersey families in need.

To take advantage of this opportunity, participating band members will be shopping for the food together. We will be meeting to shop at a local grocery store Sunday, November 17, from 11-12, and then assemble the boxes in the band room 12-2 pm. Details of store location will be determined as soon as possible. We ask that you send any monetary donations so that we have the funds to fill as many food baskets as possible. This year there are over 70 Hersey families who need our help; please consider helping us support this cause.

Please fill out the google form from the link below, listing the student's name, whether he or she will be attending the shopping spree on Sunday, and if you are willing to commit to a box. Please fill out the Google Form Document link below by Wednesday, November 13. It is imperative that we know ahead of time who will be attending and who will be contributing to food basket costs.

Thank you for your generosity,

Luke Podvrsan, John Hersey Band Student Auxiliary Vice President
