Controversial Issues in the ClassroomTownship High School District 214’s primary mission is to enable all students to learn the skills, acquire the knowledge, and develop the behaviors necessary for them to reach their full potential as citizens who can meet the challenges of a changing society. In a democracy that openly confronts acute and pressing political, social, economic, and moral problems, it is likely that such issues will be evident in classrooms. Discussions about these issues provide students with the type of learning experience that will help prepare them to meet the challenges of a global changing society.

There are some very exciting things happening in the John Hersey High School Academic Resource Center this spring! Bob Brown, math and Mobile Maker teacher, teaches an app development class at Hersey. One of Mr. Brown’s students, Blake Spoerry, developed a library access app, LibraryXs. The app is going to play a key role in how students access school resources. Instead of having to go to the school website to access library resources, every school resource can be accessed through the app by just signing in with their school username and password.

With a single user login, the app will allow access to the rich resource databases, daily Chicago Tribune, Daily Herald and Sun Times newspapers, the student Correspondent newspaper, popular magazines, ebooks, Infinite Campus, Gapps email, Schoology and Moodle. The app also includes a function to share files to Notability, Google Drive or email. The app itself was created using a software called Xcode. The code itself was written in Swift, the programming language made by Apple. The app is now available on staff and student ipads and we believe that it will be easier on students to access library resources.

Senior Citizen Day Success

Student Novels List for 2016 - 2017

The 46th annual Senior Citizen Day “Seniors in Space” was held on April 15. The Service Over Self program hosted 330 seniors to a full day of intergenerational food, folks, and fun. Several area senior centers and of course grandparents of current students were in attendance. The Wize Guys headlined our entertainment this year as they played rock and roll music from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. The Wize Guys featured performances by Hersey retired security Irv Burgraff.

Students enrolled in an English course for the upcoming school year. Township High School District 214’s English courses provide instruction and skill development focused on the areas of reading, writing and critical thinking skills. In the area of reading, English teachers will provide contextual and literary analysis experiences that enhance student’s personal connections to the text. A specific reading strategy included in this instruction is annotation.
