Newsletter Feedback Hey there Southwest District! You did it! Finals are over (or almost) and you survived another semester juggling school, work, and Circle K. Congratulations! I know December will be a slower month for most of us as we are enjoying breaks, however, with so many of us loving to serve, I am sure there will be projects you do that you will be passionate about. If so, please do not hesitate to email me about them! I want to hear about the amazing things going on. I also would like to hear your opinion on the latest Southwest Sun. Every month, ASU CKI volunteers with the Downtown Scottsdale Young Professionals Kiwanis Club at ICM Food Bank!
Kiwanis Family relations really just means keeping in touch and hanging out with the other branches of our Kiwanis family, which includes: Kiwanis, Aktion Club, Key Club, Builder’s Club, and K-Kids. Kiwanis is the organization that sponsors CKI and all of the other Service Leadership Programs (SLP). Aktion Club includes those with disabilities, Key Club is the high school SLP, Builder’s is the junior high school SLP, and K-Kids is the elementary school SLP. As a “Kiwanis Family,” we should be interacting with and supporting each other, much like your own family! Key Clubs One of the strongest benefits from interacting with your local Key Club(s) is the strong members and officers you might recruit after they graduate. Key Clubbers know the structure of the club, have connections for different service projects, which makes them experienced members and great potential officers. A good service project involving Key Club(s) is “Key to College.” It is basically a college information session, where CKI’ers arrange a time with the Key Club and school, to present to high school students (in CKI or not) about the college admission and transition process, what it is like in college, and to answer general questions. Doing this gives these high schools students a family to go to once they get to your school, without directly pressuring the students into joining. It is a service project in itself with an indirect recruiting aspect built into it. This project is suggested for the spring! http://www.circlek.org/Leadership/KeyToCollege.aspx
Kiwanis Clubs Interacting with your local Kiwanis club(s) can allow for: career networking, financial
support for club functions, and post-graduate service opportunities. When I was a Governor, my Subregion Trustee told me about how his first real career opportunity
came from a Kiwanian! Similarly, you might benefit as well. Kiwanis also does a lot of sponsoring for their SLPs. They can help subsidize expenses for district events like Fall
Rally and District Convention (DCON), in addition to club specific events or expenses, like shirts. Last, like CKI is to Key Club, Kiwanis is there ready for CKI’ers after
graduation, where the service can continue.

Who knows who you might meet!? And this is what I look like (not the cute little girl).
Aktion, Builder’s, & K-Kids Last, but certainly not least, interacting with Aktion Club, Builder’s Club, and K-Kids, will really enhance your CKI experience. It’s not often that you get the opportunity to interact with adults with disabilities, junior high students, or elementary school students to do service! The University of New Mexico CKI co-sponsors a K-Kids and I’ve heard nothing but good things! It’s an empowering experience to be able to work with these groups to create a positive impact on your communities.
Interaction A good way to interact with each of these
organizations is to attend each other’s club meetings and an even better way to do this is to lead each other’s meetings, where your CKI
president leads a Kiwanis Club meeting, etc. Invite your Kiwanians and Key Clubbers to
attend your meetings and attend theirs as well! In-person interaction is extremely important
and who knows what you might learn! Having presidents taking turns leading each other’s
meetings is a fun an excellent way to accomplish this same interaction. Kiwanis groups absolutely
LOVE the energy that CKI provides. Try it out! Last, another excellent way to interact is bond through service! Organize service
projects with the other branches of your Kiwanis Family! This can be with either just one branch or multiple branches at the same project!
These are all excellent ways to build stronger connections, but the first step is to communicate an interest! I hope you will use this information to enhance your CKI experience. It’s what you put into it.

American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes is a nation-wide effort to bring a touch of home to those serving our country in the armed forces. With so many
men and women away from their families this holiday
season, Grand Canyon University took part in this effort this year by writing in Christmas cards that could
bring a smile to a heroes face. Together, members and non-
members brightened the holidays for over 75 service
members in hospitals and overseas. Way to go GCU!

NAU: Ashley Femrite She has been a part of the club since day one. Out of all of the members, Ashley has the highest attendance rate for meetings and service projects
UA: Nixon Potteiger
GCU: Lamonte McDuffie Lamonte is our member of the month not only because he raised the most money for ELIMINATE in both October and November, he is also the most giving person in our club. As our president, he is incredibly humble and sacrificing. We want him to know how much we appreciate him this month and always!
Thank you all for the amazing things you are doing in your club and SWD! Congratulations on your nomination! You deserve it!
