DISTRICT SERVICE DAY FALL 2013:

November 9th

HIGHLIGHTED SERVICE PARTNERS:

DISTRICT SERVICE DAY SPRING 2013:

April 5th

(KIWANIS ONE DAY)

HIGHLIGHTED SERVICE PARTNER:

As your new service chair for the Mighty Southwest, my goal is to have two days, one in the fall and one in the spring, in which the whole district does a service day. We may be spread out, but we can do a lot! The goal is to do service with each other, but from miles away! I have assigned which service partners to focus on these days but it is entirely up to you how you would like to serve them! If you have something in your community you would like to do instead this day, just let me know. Take pictures, and have fun. Yours in Friendship and Service, Katie Merrill Soutwest District Zia Division LTG Service Chair [email protected] (575) 956-3394

I know it says Key Club on this header – but the message is quite

applicable. You are guaranteed to save at least one life and most likely more

for$1.80. At the Southwest District Kiwanis District Convention – we need your

help with cheering on our Kiwanians as they walk a while to save a Baby’s

Smile. They will be led by the Millennium High School Band. I look forward to

seeing you at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield, Arizona – July 26th and 27th,

2013.

I wish to take this time to thank all of you.

Witnessing your efforts, your energy and your

belief in the mission of Kiwanis “Serving the

Children of the World,” provided the incentive for

me to accept an appointment by our Kiwanis

International President Tom DeJulio. As a result,

at the 98th Annual Kiwanis International

Convention in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, the

Executive Board approved my appointment. On

October 1st, 2013, I will begin my 3 year term as

Kiwanis International Trustee on the Kiwanis

International Foundation Board. This appointment

will keep me close to the World Wide Eliminate

MNT Project. It also provides an opportunity for

the Southwest District to have a presence at the

International Level.

Our most recent past Kiwanis International Trustees Tim Young and Jim

Jennings (SWD Key Club Administrator) have set the bar. I accept this

challenge with the support of our Service Leadership Programs, especially CKI,

and our Kiwanians, I believe it will be achievable.

Once again, I thank you and promise to serve you honorably, dedicating all of my

energy to ensure the future of Kiwanis International as we continue to “serve the

children of the world.” Ron Smith

Circle K International Convention (ICON) was a wonderful experience! From the people we met, food we ate, and things we did, ICON at Vancouver, BC was a fantastic experience!

After checking in, we quickly met up with Ryan Ocampo, our Subregion B Trustee and good friend. He took us to what became our favorite restaurant of the trip: Santouka Ramen! I ordered a spicy broth, called Kara Miso, with springy ramen

noodles, savory pork, and perfectly cooked egg with a side of fatty and savory pork with green onions over rice. We ended up coming back for dinner on our last day there, with our new Cal-Nev-Ha friends!

We then explored the exhibition hall, where Alex showed off her Southwest spirit in a chili costume! Later, I duked it out with Shivam Patel, the New Jersey Governor, in his Tomato Costume. And at roll Call, Alex stood on a chair and danced around with our Subregion during our District Cheer, IN THE CHILI COSTUME. Although we were plenty loud with the two of us, CNH, and Rocky Mountain, the Southwest could be better represented with some Arizona and New Mexico spirit! I hope we have much more attendees this 2014 year at Nashville, Tennessee, music & BBQ town! Later, we bonded

with our Subregion A+ counterparts at our Subregion Awards dinner. And we elected our new International President, Daniel Tsang, International Vice President, Amelia Ahnert, and our new Subregion B Trustee, David Limjoco! Last, I would like to

congratulate our Immediate Past District Bulletin Editor, Elissia Torres, for earning the Distinguished Editor award! I hope to see you all in Nashville, Tennessee next year! -Andrew Lee

UNM CKI President, Kelsey Vishaway, and Circle K International members from around the world met in Vancouver, Canada to construct two playgrounds for a school in need on June 23, 2013. Members constructed both playgrounds in two days, saving the school and their annex approximately $35,000. Other members volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, cleaned local parks, as well as packaged and stocked food items at a Vancouver food bank generating over 2,500 hours of community service in just two days! Circle K International meets each year for an annual International Convention and service project in the host city in which International board members are voted on and amendments to bylaws are created in addition to many new friendships. Lieutenant Governor Updates Hello Mighty Southwest! Hope all is going well and your summers are as

enjoyable as mine has been! I've been doing a lot of traveling and seeing family and friends, but enough about me! The Zia division is doing good as they always are. UNM has been just as busy as always. In June, they helped the organization Crossroads for Women clean some of their storage facilities. They have been sending board representatives to attend Kiwanis and La Cueva High School Key Club meetings each week! UNM also sent a few members to help at the Kiwanis Fishing Derby at Shady Lakes. The President, Kelsey Vishaway, attended LSSP in Vancouver and had a wonderful time building a playground for the Laurier School Annex. She did a great job representing the SWD as our only attendee to LSSP. Great Job Kelsey! In July, UNM started the month with a bake sale to raise general funds. They will also be taking part in helping Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central New Mexico make phone calls for donations of raffle prizes for their fashion show. UNM may also help with the event itself. Two members of UNM are attending KCON on July 27th! Kelsey has also been a great help with assisting me in planning my CLE for New Mexico. She and UNM are also possibly planning a social for the attendes. ENMU has been visiting thier Kiwanis club and are in the process of planning a kickball tournament/fundrasier for the fall. Don't forget I will be hosting NM's CLE is JULY 20th in Albuquerque! Yours in service and Friendship

The Baja Division (as of now) solely consists of a club at the University of

Arizona. However, plans are in the works to re-charter Cochise Community College and

plans are to establish a club at Pima Commuting College. In addition to these the Baja

Division and the UofA’s Circle K are aiming towards making the University of Phoenix

and South campuses satellite clubs, so they too can join our wonderful service

organization.

The University of Arizona’s CKI is working diligently to set the foundation for

yet another amazing fun-filled year full of Service, Fellowship, and Leadership. The club

is making goals and plans, specifically in regards to Kiwanis Family Relations,

membership growth and retention, and of course hours of service preformed both as

individuals and as a club. UofA is also hoping for increased membership participation at

district wide events, such as Fall Rally and District Convention.

The Baja Division and one of the Universities of Arizona’s major service partners

is Beads of Courage. Beads of Courage is an artistic way to use beads within medicine to

provide a support system for children that have serious illnesses, their families and their

relatives, and even health care providers to ease the pain of these difficult times. If you

and/or your club would like to know more information about Beads of Courage please

feel free to reach out to any member of UofA CKI and by checking out the organizations

website: www.beadsofcourage.org.

Miles Glick

Although we haven’t done anything with CKI’s preferred charities recently, we did do a spaghetti dinner last fall to raise money for our club, and part of the profits went to Eliminate. Being our second such dinner, we learned a lot. We learned that a better time is in spring, such as February, rather than November. We also learned that we should push community sales just as much as student ticket sales. The jazz band from ENMU is a big help to us, because live music always brings in more people. We are very excited to take what we have learned previously and apply it in future dinners. Although we haven’t done anything for our community this summer, we do have several project ideas for the next few weeks that we are trying to get line up, from planting trees around town to helping people clean up their homes. Things are also starting to fall into place for a large fundraiser event soon after the fall semester starts, and we will give more details on that when we get closer to the event.

Our members are excited and ready for officer training on the 20th, and can’t wait to see our friends from other clubs. We hope everyone is having a great summer!

District Ramblings

Hey SWD! So as the new academic year is coming to a start within the next

month, please be sure to educate your members about dues. Dues pay for your membership card, membership pin, membership certificate, and get you covered in insurance under Kiwanis as an official member of CKI!

By being an official member, you become a benefit to CKI by being eligible to serve as club, district, or even international officer! You can also serve on one of the committees to take CKI to the next level. Since we do not want CKI to be a financial burden for anyone, fundraising is always the next best thing.

Bake sales, car washes, percentage nights at restaurants can all work to further assist the financial situation of your club. Another thing I would like to push is that your club should never be afraid to ask for help from the Kiwanians. Besides being awesome role models, they are also there to assist in any way they see fit. A fundraising guide has already been sent out to all the club Treasurers, but it will be sent out again to club Presidents as well. If anyone needs anything, just let me know.

-Enjoy the rest of your lovely summer!!! Kevin Wright SWD CKI Treasurer

Congratulations to immediate past Bulletin Editor, Elissia

Torres for being recognized for as a distinguished officer at International Convention.

Serina Pack, Perla DeLosAngeles, and

Andrew Lee have a safe trip to Leadership

Academy! While there soak in all that is

happening and become stronger leaders!

To those who are attending Kiwanis District

Convention: enjoy!
