DISTRICT SERVICE DAY FALL 2013: November 9th

HIGHLIGHTED SERVICE PARTNERS:

DISTRICT SERVICE DAY SPRING 2014: April 5th

(KIWANIS ONE DAY)

HIGHLIGHTED SERVICE PARTNER:

As your new service chair for the Mighty Southwest, my goal is to have two days, one in the fall and one in the spring, in which the whole district does a service day. We may be spread out, but we can do a lot! The goal is to do service with each other, but from miles away! I have assigned which service partners to focus on these days but it is entirely up to you how you would like to serve them! If you have something in your community you would like to do instead this day, just let me know. Take pictures, and have fun. Yours in Friendship and Service, Katie Merrill Soutwest District Zia Division LTG Service Chair [email protected] (575) 956-3394

Meet our International Trustee

for Sub-Region B!

Hello Southwest District!

My name is David Limjoco and I'm honored to be serving as your Subregion

B International Trustee for the 2013-2014 Term. The districts within Subregion B are the California-Nevada-Hawaii District, the Rocky Mountain District, and your very own Southwest District. I hope that we can get to know each other but that you can get to know the members of the other districts too!

Previous to this position I've served as my club's Secretary and the CNH

District Secretary as well as serving as a member of the CNH Kiwanis Family Committee and the chair of the International SPICE (Social Potential Innovative Club Enhancement) Committee. These experiences have given me knowledge on many areas of CKI and I hope I can bring these experiences to assist you and everyone else in our subregion this year with all of your needs. So if you have any

questions, have any suggestions, or just want to talk feel free to email me at: [email protected] or call/text me at (619) 791-4527

Outside of CKI I'm a Senior at the University of California, Los Angeles

(UCLA) with an Environmental Science Major and an interest in going to public health graduate school after serving in either the Peace Corp or Americorps. I currently conduct research on soil cores to see climate change, am a part of an

organization that teaches health issues to elementary and middle school students about health issues, and am in-between internships. So I have a lot of other interests other than CKI that we can talk about :) I have a game for you all, it's called 2 truths and a lie. Can you guess which one of these is a lie?

1. I am related to royalty. 2. I have an extra bone in my rib-cage.

3. I have donated platelets more than 30 times during my collage career. Try and guess and tell me what you think when we meet! I can't wait to meet many of you during my District Visit later this month or during

your Fall Rally and talk to you about CKI or life in general! In Service, David Limjoco

Board

Hey Southwest!

I can’t believe the new semester has already started for

some of us! I know most of the clubs were less active than usual during the summer months, but I hope you are all ready to really

kick it into gear with your service hours this semester. With over 750 service hours completed since April, we are just over one-

tenth of the way to reaching our goal of 7,500 service hours for the year. I know it seems like a lot, but the Southwest District is

MORE than capable of completing 7,500 hours of service this year. Now is the time to start looking for cool, creative service

projects for your clubs. Don’t worry if you are running low on ideas. You can always feel free to ask other club

members/presidents, your lieutenant governor, or a district board member. On the flipside, if you have a really cool service project

idea, don’t be afraid to share it with the rest of the district!

I hope your semester starts well!

Chelsea Fox here, your Kiwanis Family

Relations Chair. I had the opportunity to attend this year’s Kiwanis District convention

in Litchfield Park, Az. CKI did some major representing there. We had a table set up

pre-selling our Fall Rally shirts, we sold quite a few, and I can’t wait to see all of those

Kiwanians sporting our CKI wear this October! We also did some fundraising for

the Eliminate Project and participated in their early morning Eliminate walk. There was also

a scavenger hunt, a flash mob at dinner, and

lots of Kiwanians getting down on the dance floor. Being there definitely motivated me in

my position to get more connected with our K-family and do more wonderful things with

them. School starts next week and I have got a great idea to start it off right with our

K-family. I dare you all to have your first service project of the school year to include

any and all Kiwanians, Key Clubbers, Builder Clubbers, K-Kids, and Aktion Clubbers in your area.

CKI Leadership Academy

in Indianapolis was an incredible

experience. I encourage CKI

members to apply for this life-

changing and inspiring

leadership camp next year. It is

so worth the time! Three of us

from Southwest District

attended. The camp fee is

minimal. The biggest expense is

air fare, but if you plan early, it is so worth the investment.

Also, attending the Kiwanis

Southwest District Convention was

fantastic. There were eleven of us

CKIers in attendance representing the

Southwest District. I was also pleased

to do an original painting, on behalf of

WNMU CKI, that was part of the

Kiwanis convention’s silent auction to

raise funds for scholarships. I hope

that next year, each CKI club will

donate to their silent auction. Also a

huge congratulation is extended to

Kiwanis Southwest District Governor,

Windy Mortenson. She is an

inspiration to us all! Next year, their

convention will be in El Paso. I hope

more of us can go and show our

support for all the Kiwanis makes

possible for us!

I look forward to working with WNMU and NMSU CKI to see their clubs

grow and to do great things for service in their communities. It is my hope

that we can get a new club started at UTEP. We are so fortunate in the Rio

Grande Division to have such great support by Kiwanis from our CKI

Administrator, Bob Carson; to CKI Associate Administrator, Lori Bonomo; to

Kiwanis Division 7 Lt. Governor, Mike Dallago. I look forward to traveling our

region, strengthening Kiwanis relations, working with CKI clubs, building new

ones, doing service, and reaching out to work with Tianna Zambrano-Key Club

Lt. Governor. Together, we are one big-powerful family, who can be the

change we want to see in the world. This is going to be great school year!

Club Leadership Education (CLE) for the CKI’s in Arizona will be held at each of the 3 different campuses. Lt. Governor Miles will be facilitating the CLE

at UA and I will be facilitating those at ASU and NAU.

Everyone is welcomed to attend! Miles and I have been getting everything ready to put on a great training, especially since the bar was set so

high by Lt. Governors Katie Merrill and Serina Pack with assistance from Bulletin Editor Kelsae Pederson. If anyone who is not an officer or member at

ASU, NAU, or U of A would like to attend please contact Miles or myself for specific location and times.

What is Club Leadership Education?

Every year with the election of a new club board there is a transfer of information from the old board to the new board. Along with this transfer of

information the District Board trains each new board with information from International.

How does the District Board know what information to teach?

Every year the New District Governor and the Administrator travel to

Indianapolis, In for Governor/Administrator Training Conference (GATC). GATC is an intensive weekend packed with Training, Fellowship, and Service where

each Governor is armed with the skills to go back to their District and train their Board members and Club Board members. This year the Lieutenant

Governors of each division have or will be having their own CLE.

Why is CLE important to my club?

CLE is important to your club so that each club will have the same information as all CKI clubs in the

International organization.

If you are not a Club Board Member but would like to someday run for an office either on the club

level or District level attending a CLE is a great place to learn about positions on both levels.

Pensées… from the

Administrator

Do you know of a school or community center that could benefit

from a Terrific Kids program? Terrific Kids is a Kiwanis youth

program that can be sponsored by a CKI club or CKI can serve as

a co-sponsor along with a Kiwanis club. Kiwanis resources make

starting a club simple and rewarding.

We want all children to have the chance to become thoughtful,

enthusiastic, respectful and responsible, not to mention inclusive,

friendly, inquisitive and capable, or in Kiwanis words, Terrific Kids.

And the best place to begin is the beginning.

Teachers are planning their lessons now for the new school year,

and Terrific Kids is the Kiwanis student-recognition program that

can help them promote character development, self-esteem and

perseverance for students in the classroom.

All your club has to do is find a local school or community center

and offer to help, starting with goal setting. You’ll find advice on

character coaching and resources including a presentation

worksheet and the especially popular journal starter, in addition to

guidance for working with younger kids on the goal setting page

of the Terrific Kids website. Then you’ll be on your way to helping

kids become even more terrific than they are already.

For questions about Terrific Kids programs, contact Alma Carson,

Kiwanis Kids Chair in the Southwest District or Lisa Pyron, Member

Engagement, Key Club International. Alma can be reached at

[email protected] and Lisa at [email protected] or call 1-

Western New Mexico University

Western New Mexico University CKI is excited to get

started this semester and is focused on building

membership and being active with service. Summer is a

hard time to do very much, because so many students go

home or are away for summer; yet, lots of exciting things

are being planned for the new semester, including a kick-

off bowling party.

WNMU CKI is working closely with the Kiwanis Club

of Silver City. Earlier this month several students, were in

the area, got together to start on a project for Eliminate.

They made special collection jars for Eliminate. These jars

have on the inside pieces of blue and white tissue paper

(the colors of Eliminate) adhered to the jar, making a

pretty jar. Jars were decorated by students and they also

involved some younger youth, getting them involved in the

service project, sharing how just $1.80 can save a life!

WNMU CKI is teaming up with Kiwanis members to place

these jars in the community and also across offices on

campus. For a month, they will manage these collection

jars for donations to Eliminate. Photos include working on

jars as well as when WNMU CKI presented the project at

Kiwanis Club of Silver City meeting.

WNMU CKI will also be sponsoring

a Terrific Kids school again this year—

Jose Barrios Elementary. Other service

projects include assisting with “The

Festival of the Written Word,” organizing

a self-defense course for girls, beads-of-

courage, and expanding work in the elementary schools to promote literacy.

University of New Mexico

Greetings from UNM CKI! Here are a few photos of projects we have

done this spring and summer.

This is a group of UNM CKI

members participating in Spring

Storm. Spring Storm is an

annual, campus-wide service

project run by UNM students to

benefit the community around

UNM. This year, UNM CKI

volunteered at Endorphin Power

Company, an organization that

focuses on improving the lives

of people who are struggling

with substance abuse and

homelessness. UNM CKI worked

to cultivate a community garden

that will be therapeutic to many

people in need.

Here is UNM CKI at the Big

Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for

Kid’s Sake event. The event

was a bowl-a-thon, with many

groups donating time and

money to raise funds for the

Big Brothers Big Sisters

organization. This organization

is a mentoring agency that

sponsors positive role models

for kids in need. UNM CKI is

looking forward to working with

Big Brothers Big Sisters in the

future.

This is a photo of UNM

CKI participating in

Carhopping for Tips, a

fundraiser for the club.

Club members hopped,

walked, and skated to

cars at a Sonic Drive-In,

and collected tips to fund

the club’s expenses for

DCON and LSSP, as well

as future service

projects.
