DANCING STAR: Liam Wilson doing what he loves best.
MANSFIELD dancer Liam Wilson (23) has been competing in the World Championships of Perform-ing Arts (WCOPA) in Long Beach, California since 2015, and last year went with Team Australia as men-tor and assistant manager.
The WCOPA attract thousands of competitors from right across the globe and is likened to the Olym-pics of performing arts.
Liam has competed in all styles of dance, acting and modelling and was awarded overall cham-pion of the world in the jazz dance category in 2018.
Liam was also a multi-medal-list in all categories and one of few Australians to proceed to the grand fi nale showcase in model-ling which was televised world wide.
Liam was also awarded a schol-arship to Millenium Dance Com-plex in North Hollywood where he trained with some of the world’s best dancers and coaches.
Following three years at Transit Dance in Brunswick in performing arts and teaching, Liam worked as a professional busker and actor in Melbourne in addition to event
and festival management. When it was announced there
would be lockdowns due to COVID Liam returned to Mansfi eld where he has been teaching dance on line and working on web design and re-branding the family accommoda-tion business.
Instead of travelling to the USA for WCOPA this year the compe-tition will all be virtual over two weeks beginning on Friday, July 24.
Team Australia had another strong line up this year, and com-peted from their homes instead of the big stage to keep in line with the restrictions.
“Even though we have not con-nected personally with the other performers from around the globe or visited Disneyland, Virtual WCOPA 2020 has been such a dif-ferent but rewarding experience,” Liam said.
“It has allowed more time for really honing our craft through our video submissions and online bootcamp workshops from the industry elite, at the same time as continuing to work in Mansfi eld and spend time with family.
“Very thankful for this opportu-nity without the stress of choreo-graphing 15 performances, pack-ing various outfi ts for each one, travelling overseas and the uncer-tainty of live performance.
“This is the magic of technology, as the human race continues to tackle this virus together, using art to take our minds off everything, and focus on smiling.”
Liam managed to snag gold medals in Senior Solo Dance and Senior Modelling and a silver med-al for acting.
With the entertainment indus-try hit hard during COVID, this was such a positive boost for all of the competitors.
It has been a dream of Liam’s since 2015 to be awarded a spot in the grand fi nale showcase for dance and his dream came true with his gold medal performance of “The Evolution of Michael Jackson”.
There were over 3000 competi-tors and only 27 went through to the grand fi nale showcase.
Liam was the only person to get through for solo dance and mod-elling, taking two of those world spots.
