– Need answers to questions:• How can IEEE bring value to Industry?• Can industry leaders collaborate with IEEE in defining its vision for the future?

• What actions should IEEE take to still be a relevant organization 10 years from now?

• Young Professionals– Entrepreneurship: an ad hoc Committee was appointed to identify the most pressing

needs of this community and to recommend how IEEE can best engage professionals in this sector with meaningful programs, products and services (P1, P2, P4)

– Develop a consistent (across the organization) line of Career Management/Planning Products and Services.

• IEEE should pioneer the use of new technologies in offering its products and services. (P4)

• Get an answer to the question: can IEEE be a leader on Continuing Education?

• Fundamental Issues– The need for the IEEE Board to take clear and unequivocal stances on

critical issues and core values• Ex: Value of Membership

– The need to maintain an environment where volunteers are motivated and having fun in contributing their time and talent to IEEE. (as opposed to being inconvenienced and aggravated)

• Quality of financial information in support of strategic/prioritization decisions.

• TAB Critical Issues– How can we control IEEE spending so the Societies and

Councils can succeed?• I have appointed an ad hoc committee on Infrastructure that I am

charging to find answers to this question and help the Board make strategic/priority decisions.

• Bob Hebner, chairs the committee and several members are familiar with TAB culture and problems: Flescher, Barr, Moura, Benedetto, Hurley.

• Who sets the priorities and policies for the IEEE, volunteers or staff?– ANSWER: THIS IS A VOLUNTEER DRIVEN ORGANIZATION

AND IT WILL CONTINUE TO BE.

– Long discussion on increasing costs of TAB support.– The issue is that income is not growing which is a fundamental

issue across all of IEEE.– IEEE overhead growth is not sustainable.

• Electron Devices Society Income and TAB Support Fee – February 2014– Albert Wang, President, IEEE Electron Devices Society– Presidents should look into their TAB support fee.

Conduct Warning System/Training

• New Section of IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB) Operations Manual – Warning System for Repetitive Unprofessional Behaviors – Motion was passed.

• IEEE Ethics and Compliance: Education/Training Program - Pedersen/Lach

• Ad Hoc Code of Conduct and Policy Review Committee– On-line training being developed IEEE Staff & Vounteers– Training will be required for IEEE Employees, Volunteer Leadership

(Board of Directors, IEEE Major Boards, IEEE Board Standing Committees, some IEEE Standards Association Committees , Section Chairs and Treasurers, Society Treasurers, Conferences (Chair and Technical Program Chair), and Treasurer (Financial Interest).

Professional Productivity & Collaboration Tools (PPCT)

• Target professional needs of authors, researchers, and current/potential IEEE members by developing tools to:– Remotely collaborate in a seamless way– Strengthen connections with the global community of technology

professionals– Access and manage the information they need in their profession in

a very efficient way– Accelerate research and publication with improved tools– Facilitate professional development and networking

• Purpose is to create a specialized service with a scope and depth of expertise in engineering and technology not found in general social networks.

• We need to rapidly catch-up with other organizations.

Researcher Forum

• Reports from the Researcher Forum are available– “Implications of the Changing Research Enterprise”

• Important observations– The need for publications is being replaced by need for

information.– Trust requires personal interactions.– Conferences and other IEEE meetings are likely to be

even more important in the future.

• This suggests changes in IEEE business model.

– Estimating over 425,000 attendees• 249k financially sponsored conferences• 176k technically sponsored conferences

– Thru Dec 2013, acquired 1362 conference proceedings

• Motion to appropriately allocate expenses from Technical Co-Sponsorship was passed.

• May 1 – Page Counts needed– During this transition year, we are requesting the Societies/Councils/Treasurers

to submit the Total Page Counts and Ad Page Counts for each periodical (magazines, journals/transactions, letters, reviews, and newsletters).

– If your Society/Council has over-run your page budget for periodicals consistently, please adjust your page budget to properly reflect the higher level, if appropriate. We’re looking to improve the accuracy of the page counts to improve the accuracy of the page rates from PSPB.

• May 15 – All Other Information Needed (examples):– Dues changes– Membership benefits (adding or eliminating any items or media types of

• Roger Pollard– For leadership toward the creation of IEEE Xplore and fostering

constructive relations between IEEE Operating Units.• Hal Flescher

– For enhancing the ability of TAB/IEEE to support technical activities, particularly through better financial management.

• Ellen Yoffa– For transforming the Society Review Committee through the

adoption of new policies and processes to the benefit of Societies and all of TAB.

• Wanda Reder– For organizing, championing, and leading the IEEE Smart Grid effort

and establishing a sustainable model for subsequent new initiatives.
