Chaplain’s Corner

Contentment

IN PHILIPPIANS 4:11-13, the Apostle Paul writes,…I have learned in whatever state I am,

to be content. I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suff er need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Paul had achieved something many of us struggle to achieve – contentment. What would it take for you to be content? You may say, “If I just had that job, I would be on my way.” Or, “If I could just make X amount of money, I would be set.” Or, “If I could just marry the right person, my life would be better.”

There are lots of moments in life when “if-only” statements such as these take shape in our minds. If we do fi nally manage to secure that one thing we so acutely feel the lack of, there’s usually something else just over the horizon for which we then begin to long.

Real contentment is based on what happens inside of us, not on what’s going on around us. Yet we spend so much time and energy trying to control our surroundings, possessions, and the people with whom we come into contact – all in a vain attempt to make ourselves “feel good.”

Feeling good, however, isn’t about external things, but internal ones. Feeling good about yourself is a byproduct of inner peace and joy. The Bible tells us that both of these come from God. Look again at what Paul has to say about his external circumstances. He describes himself as “abased,” “hungry,” and in “need.” He also says that, nevertheless, he has learned “to be content.”

Real contentment is a need, not a want. Consider the amount of discontent you have in your life because you didn’t get something you wanted. If peace and joy come only as a result of getting something you want, your life will be spent on an emotional roller-coaster – exhilarating heights after getting a new toy, and the depths of despair when you see the toy someone else has.

The fact is that the God who loves us has already completely supplied our needs.

The key to real contentment, therefore, is to trust in God as the ultimate source of our happiness and joy. If God really does love us, as we affi rm he does, then He has our best interests in mind. There’s no need to get upset if a certain toy is withheld from us. We can be confi dent that God has something even better in store for us.

Paul says he is strengthened by Christ, and as a result can do whatever is required of him. Paul experiences abasement, and at other times abundance. He has enough to eat, but sometimes experiences hunger. The constant in Paul’s life is the strengthening power of God, and the trust he places in Him.

What challenges are you facing right now? Good or bad, God is in control of them all. What did Solomon say in Proverbs?

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. (Prov. 3:5-6).

Blessings, Chaplain Garry

Dress Code in Detail

THE MEDICAL CITY HEALTHCARE DRESS-CODE policy has been in eff ect for almost two years. It can be found on the HCAhrAnswers website.

In response to the questions that have arisen most frequently so far, Human Resources provides the following clarifi cations:

● Medical City Healthcare t-shirts may only be worn on Fridays by employees who donated to the Hope Fund at the gold or platinum level ($500 or more annually). Otherwise the t-shirt may only be worn under a scrub top.● Apparel that displays a “Medical Center of Plano” logo (including the red jacket) is in violation of the policy as it causes confusion to the patient and undermines our new brand.● Employees with arm tattoos should wear a long-sleeve shirt under their scrub top to cover the tattoo. Questions about what is reasonable and/or feasible to be covered, should be directed to your manager or HR.Don’t hesitate to contact your manager with any questions

Support the March of Dimes Marchfor Babies®

WHILE FEW LIFE-EVENTS are more joyful than the birth of a child, no one anticipates needing to care for a baby born prematurely or ill and needing to spend

time in a newborn intensive care unit. Sadly, for hundreds of thousands of moms in our nation, such is the frightening reality.

For this reason, MCP and MCF are participating in the March for Babies® to help raise money for March of Dimes-funded research and programs to help more moms bring healthy, full-term babies into the world. This year’s March for Babies is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, at The Lawn of Reunion Tower.

Join the Medical City Plano or Medical City Frisco teams to walk or make a donation to the cause. Find links to both teams on the SharePoint home page.

Please refer any questions to Plano Team Captain Nancy Charron-Escribano, or Sonja Castillo, MCP’S Manager of NICU and Pediatrics.

At Medical City Frisco, contact Emily Vannoy, Manager of the NICU, Nursery, and Pediatrics.

We Rise Up

AS WE BEGIN A NEW SEASON, I’d like to pause and refl ect on the noteworthy

wins we’ve achieved together in this year’s fi rst quarter.

Meeting our fi rst-quarter goal by scoring at the 75th percentile for both inpatient and emergency patient satisfaction confi rms the wisdom of maintaining an intense focus on the consistent delivery of Excellence Always. It’s working! We’re also delighted that, during this same period, HCAHPS scores ranked Medical City Plano and Medical City Frisco #1 and #2, respectively, within our division.

I’m confi dent that, through continuation of our united and unfl agging eff ort, we can sustain this success through the second quarter and beyond.

Among our other recent accomplishments are the recognition of the Neurosciences ICU as an HCA Unit of Distinction, and of the Wound Care and Limb Preservation Center as a “Center of the Year” among nearly 700 wound-care centers nationwide. Congratulations to each and every staff member in these departments. These honors are a further testament to the high level of care we provide our patients day in and day out.

Assembling and cultivating teams that perform at a high level is key to our success. For this reason, I’m delighted to report that, in the area of staffi ng, we recently recorded the lowest vacancy rate we’ve seen in a number of years. We attribute this to winning recruitment-and-retention strategies such as peer interviewing and new employee rounding. I applaud the teamwork that went into the selection of new employees who fi t well with our culture and have a heart for our mission.

Construction UpdateWe continue to move forward with expansion projects

on both our Plano and Frisco campuses. To go with the Women’s Services unit currently under construction in Frisco, $37.5 million has been approved for an MCF ambulatory surgery center, medical offi ce building and parking garage. Construction meetings will begin later this month.

At Medical City Plano, we have received approval to proceed with a $107 million, four-story patient tower. Located north of the Emergency Department, it will add 90 patient beds and four new operating rooms. Look for construction to begin very soon.

EBCDElsewhere in the way of things new-and-improved, the highly

anticipated rollout of Evidence-Based Clinical Documentation (EBCD) begins this month with Preview Day and training for nursing and clinical staff . This enhanced MEDITECH will streamline workfl ow, giving nurses more time at the bedside for patient care.

In closing, I’d like to express my gratitude and deep respect to the tremendous number of you who contributed to the HCA Hope Fund last year. As a result, Medical City Plano accounted for the largest single block of contributions to the fund in 2017. No fewer than 19 of your MCP friends and colleagues personally benefi ted from your donations. I count this as one of many ways in which we rise up to carry out our mission.

Thank you for all the ways you contributed to our success these past few months, and for rising up to seize the opportunities that lie ahead.
