NU-Q’s journey into the future continues, and what follows in these pages is a record of individual and collective achievement in a year when so many ideas and plans came to fruition and flourished.

Theinstructionalmissionwasmarkedbystrengtheningandrenewalofthecurriculumwiththeadditionofnewcourses,includingtwothatarerequiredofallstudents—MediaandSociety,andMediaLawandEthics—whicharedesignedtogiveallaconceptualmap.Alongwithrichofferingsincommunicationandjournalismcamenewfacetstotheliberalartsprogram:anthropology,additionalworkinMiddleEaststudiesandnextyearwewillfeaturecoursesinsociologyandscienceandtechnologystudies.AllthisiscloselyassociatedwithrecruitmentasNU-Q’sfacultyexpandsandwelcomesaccomplishednewcolleagues.Concurrentwithcurricularenrichmentisthe“secondcurriculum,”anarrayofoutsidespeakersinthemediaandcommunicationfieldsaswellasotherindustriesandinstitutions.Thesearereflectedinourcalendarandrosterofspeakers,aswellascommunityoutreachevents.

Throughoutthisreportthereissignificantmentionofstudentactivitiesthatfocusonfosteringleadershipthroughvariousgovernanceandrecreationalopportunities.Theseincludesocialevents,specialinterestclubsandinternationalexposurethroughtravelandspecialprograms.Purposefulservicelearning,someforcoursecredit,tookstudentstoseveralvenuesintheUS,Africa,EuropeandelsewhereintheMiddleEast.Thisfundedtravelisamajorassetforstudentsandhasbenefittedfromgreatercoordinationandintegration.NottobeforgottenarevisitstothehomecampusinEvanstoninwhichalmost30percentofthestudentbodyparticipated.ThisyearwehadawelcomeflowofNUstudentstoQatar,includingtheinauguralSemesterinQatar,andaspecialNU-QatNU-Eprogram,aweek-longseriesofacademiceventscappedoffwithashowcaseofstudentwork.

Throughoutthisreportweacknowledgethecontinuingcontributionofcolleaguesfromthehomecampus,aswellasourfacultyandstaffintheoperationaldepartments,manyunheralded,butgreatlyvalued.UltimatelyNU-Qisaboutpeopleandtheireffortstomovetheschoolforwardthroughindividualworkandachievement.Thepastyearwasatimeofexceptionalactivityandforwardmovement,whichcombinedtomakeNU-Qaschoolthatisproudofitsplaceintheworldofeducationbydintofitscontributionstolearningandtheadvancementofknowledge.

WiththepassingofanotheryearinthelifeofNorthwesternUniversityinQatar,thereisgreatvalueinbothreportingtheactivitiesandevents,andinreflectingonthem.NU-Qisonaforwardtrajectory,eachyearbecomingmorecomplexastheschoolgrows,developsandstretches.Therearebenchmarksinthematurationoftheschoolandmanyachievementstobothacknowledgeandcelebrate.

LifeatNU-Qisaboutcontinuityandchange,buildingonthefoundationsetintheearlyyears,addingstrengthwhereneededandengagingthecollectiveimaginationofallwhoarepartoforinterestedinourcommunity.ThisYear in Review, 2015:Charting a course for growth,isachancetomakegoodonthepromissorynotethatguidesourveryexistence.That,ofcourse,isourcommitmenttoprovidestudentswithaneducationofthehighestquality.Atitsfounding,NU-QpledgedtobeworthyofNorthwesternUniversityinthequalityofourprogramsandtheexperiencedeliveredtoourstudents.Doingthatinvolvesastrategyanddailyfollow-throughforbuildingthebestschoolofitskindintheworld.

Charting the course for growthisanactiveprocess,ultimatelyinvolvingeverymemberofourcommunity,guidedbytheleadershipoftheschoolwiththeactiveassistanceofthefacultyandstaff.Itisaboutmanagingchangeastheschool’strajectorymovesforward.In2014/15,thereweremanynotableachievementsofwhichweareproud,allreflectedinthepagesthatfollow,connectingtheinstructionalmissionwithresearchandoutreach,allforthebenefitofstudents.Itwasayearofspecialmoments,including:

• annualrankingsthatplacedNorthwestern12thamongthousandsofUScollegesanduniversitiesandwithinthetop25intheworld,makingus,onceagain,thetop-rankedundergraduateuniversityinEducationCity

• aconvocationwherewecelebratedourroleinthedevelopmentoftheStateofQatarandwelcomedthelargestandmostaccomplishedfreshmanclasstodate

• thelargestgraduatingclasstodate,onewhoseachievementandhonorsincludedtwoofthefivemostprestigiousawardsinEducationCity

• acontinuingflowofouralumnitotheworld’sbestgraduateandprofessionalschools,animportantexternalvalidationofourstudentsandtheeducationtheygetatNU-Q

Thestate-of-the-artNU-Qbuilding,currentlyunderconstruction,wasdesignedbyhighly-regardedarchitectAntoinePredock.Itwillfeaturefourvideoproductionstudios,two150-personlecturehalls,ablackboxtheater,atwo-studioradiostation,multi-medianewsroomandaresearchlibrarycontainingelectronic,printandDVDmaterials.Althoughthenewbuildinghasbeendelayed,constructionandplanningcontinueasthecompletiondatenears.Inthe2014/15academicyear,NU-Q:

•reviewedandfacilitatedtheacquisitionofInternetandbusinessserverinfrastructures,andthetransitionplanningandconfigurationoftheseinfrastructureelementsisunderway

•conducteddetailedreviewsofthemediapackageproductionandaudio/visualtechnologydesignsandthroughaprocessofvalueengineering,refreshedandupdatedthetechnologysavingonoverallcapitalinvestmentandyearlyoperationalexpenses

•mappedpriorityclassroomandconferenceroomspaceswhosesuccessfulcompletionisessentialtoNU-Qbuildingoccupancy

ThechallengeforNU-Qistoprovideaselectiveandrigorouscurriculumthatprovidesthesamedegreestandardsasthehomecampus,whileadaptingandadjustingcourseworktotheQatarvenue.In2014/15,NU-Q:

•expandedcourseofferingsandimplementedthenewrequiredcourseswiththehelpoffournewfacultymembers

•recruitedfivenewfacultymembersinkeyareastobegininSeptember2015

Theresearchofficehasmadegreatstridesthisyear,withthefollowinghighlights:

•thesignature$850,000institutionalmediauseresearchprogramcontinuedwithpublicationofitsthirdinstallment,Media Use in the Middle East, 2015

•amajorstudyoncontentinnovationstrategiesformobilemediainQatarhasbegun,supportedbyagrantof$725,000

•grantsrangingfrom$18,000to$150,000wereawardedtofaculty-ledprojectsonnationalmuseums,Arabchildrenandyouthtelevision,globalregulationofparodyandsatire,changingthedeadlydrivinghabitsofyoungQatarimen,andengagementandempowermentofQatariwomen

•researchworkshopsandcolloquiawereheldregularlytoshareinformationandprovidesupportandguidance

•thestudentresearchprogramhascontinuedtogrowwithtwonewUndergraduateResearchExperienceProgramgrants

Thisyear,ServiceLearningTripstudentsfocusedontheglobalwatercrisis.Thosewhowereselectedforthetriplearnedaboutthechallengesofaccesstocleanwater,choosingtogotoZambiaforafirsthandlook.ThestudentsraisedmoneyforCharity:waterpriortothetrip,andwhileinZambiasawtheissuesthatfacethecountry.Thestudentsalsoparticipatedinserviceworkatalocalschoolanddocumentedtheexperienceforapresentationtothestudentbody.

TheTaskForceonAdmissionscomesatafortuitoustimeafterayearwithanablenewdirectorinplaceandvariouschangesintheadmissionsprocessandperhapsothersgoingforward.ContinuingtostrengthentheadmissionsprocessanddepartmentwillhelpusaddresstheoverallgoalofrecruitingthestrongestpossiblestudentswithattentiontoourspecialobligationtotheStateofQatar.

Thechangesintheadmissionsprocessoverthelastyearhaveincludedmajoralterationsintheroleofthefacultyintheselectionoftheclass,theendofthecontrolledwritingexamandpersonalinterviewsaswellasatransitionthisyearfromtheexistingapplicationsystemtotheCommonApp.Wehavejustcomeoffasuccessfuladmissionsseason,thoughweknowlessaboutthewritingcapacityofstudentsthanwehaveinthepast.PlusesareagreaternumberandpercentageofQataristudentsandhightestscoresallround.Somerecentandotherlongstandingproblemsinclude:

•adeclineinoverallapplications,apparentlyconsistentwithothersinEducationCity

•adeclineinthenumberofexpatapplicantsfromQatar,whichhasbeenthestrongestcohortinthepast

•acontinuedgapbetweenfemaleandmaleapplicants

•anhistoricimbalancebetweencommunicationandjournalismapplicants

•anexceptionallyhighrateofQatariadmissiondenials/declinations

Whatisclearlyneededisareviewofprocessesandproceduresusedinadmissionswithrecommendationforanychangestoimprovethesystemorbetterunderstandit.

Forthisreason,IamappointingaTask Force on Admissionstoprovideguidanceandsupportfortheadmissionsprocess.Thetaskforcewillmeetregularlyinthefallof2014withareportduebyNovember3,2014,sothatanysuggestedchangescanbeimplementedinthisacademicyear.Asnotedabove,thereportshouldinformastrategicplannowbeingdevelopedbyadmissions.

Importantly,therecommendationsshoulddevelopanapproachthatfullyengagesfacultyintheselectionofthoseadmitted.

Thecommitteeneedstolookattheentireadmissionsprocess,includingchangessuchastheCommonApp.WithregardtotheCommonApp,validatedessayquestionsorprotocols,specificallycalibratedforNU-Q(withconsultationwiththehomecampusschools,notablyMedillandCommunication)andanyintelligencethatcanbegleanedfromcompetitorschoolsinQatarandtheregion,needstobedevelopedintimeforusethisyear.

Ouradmissionsprocessmustreflecttheschool’scommitmentto:

•aunifiedprogramwhereinthetwomajorsandsupportingliberalartscourseworkarebetterpromotedratherthanthepresentbifurcatedapproach.Thisunificationmustbeginwithadmissionsandbedirectedtostudents,theirparentsandotherstakeholders

Theadmissionsdepartmenthasalreadybegunmuchofthisprocessandneedsourhelptoachievegreaterrecognitionandinvolvementintheschool,where,ineffect,everyonecanbehelpfulintheprocessofidentifying,recruitingandretainingstudents.Thisneedstobe

Iamappointinga Task Force on Strategic Communicationthatwillplayanimportantroleindefiningourcommitmenttopublicrelations,strategiccommunicationandintegratedmarketingcommunication(IMC).ThisisagoodtimetoreconsiderwhatwearedoinginthepublicrelationsareaandreshapeinconcertwiththemandateoftheMedillSchoolwhilestillhavingthecapacitytoformourownprogram.

SinceNU-Q’sbeginningwehavehadseveralcoursesinpublicrelationsbasedinjournalismandcommunicationthatgreatlyinformthisareaofstudy.Wehave,asyoumayknow,acertificateinpublicrelations(notformallyacknowledgedinEvanston)andanincreasingcohortofstudentsinterestedinthearea.OuralumniareininfluentialspotsdoingPRandcommunicationworkinindustryandgovernmentandwehavebeenstronglyencouragedtoenhanceandstrengthenourofferings.AddtothatNU-Q’scommitmentinStrategic Outlook, 2015toconsiderhowwemightconnectwithQatar’sgrandstrategyforcommunication.

Inwhatisincreasinglyaglobalsociety,studentsatNorthwesternUniversityinQatarhaveaccesstoastudenttravelprogramwhichaimstoreinforceeducationalexperiencesintheirmajorandcollateralcourseworkontheEducationCitycampus.WiththeNU-QprograminDohaasatemplate,thegoalistoencouragepurposefultravelforexposurebeyondQatarintotheregionandtoglobaldestinations,includingthoseintheUnitedStateswhereNorthwesternUniversity’shomecampusislocated.

ThepurposeoftheStudentTravelPolicyistoprovideanorganizedtravelforexperientiallearningthatengagesstudentswiththeworldoutsideNU-Q,includingdifferentsocieties,geographiclocationswithdistinctivelearningenvironmentsandotherdiversecircumstancesworthyofthetimeandfundingsucheffortsrequire.Italsoservestofocusonlearning,the

advancementofknowledgeandprofessionalexperiencesaimedatprovidingstudentswithadistinctiveandusefulexperiencenotavailableintheclassroomorlocalenvirons.

Travel Platforms

Severaldifferenttypesofstudenttravelareofferedtostudentstoenhancetheireducation,including:

Experiential learning:Thisisagrouptripwithathemeorstatedpurposeusuallyinvolvingexposureto(a)acountry,(b)regionoftheworld,(c)event,(d)thematicdevelopment,(e)culturalassetorconditionor(f)otherstobedetermined.Studentsdonotearnacademiccredit.ThisincludestheGlobalMediaExperienceandEvanstonambassadortrips.

Service learning:Thisisagrouptripfocusedonexposuretodiversecultures,typicallyinadevelopingnationorregionwherestudentsengageinapurposefulactivitywhichinvolveshands-onexperienceinadevelopmentproject.Noacademiccreditisgiven.

Journalism residencies:Typically,thisaninternshiplastingtenweeksinaprofessionalmediaorothercommunicationorganization,withacademicsupervision,sitevisitsandrigorousassessmenttodetermineworkperformanceandvalueofexperience.Academiccreditisavailable,andthisisarequirementofthejournalismprogram.

Communication exchange:ThisconnectsNU-Qstudentswiththeirpeersonthehomecampusaswellasprovidingopportunitiestotakecoursesandengageinstudentlifeforasemesterinthejunioryear.CommunicationstudentsusethisopportunitytotakecoursesinEvanstonandgetexposuretofacultynotavailableinDoha,especiallytheliberalartsandsciencesandnon-majorfields.

Course-related travel:Somecoursesmayhaveamodulethatinvolvesinternationalorregionaltravelwhichisbuiltintothecourseandadvertisedinadvance.Thisistypicallyforcarryingoutaprofessionaljournalisticormediaassignment,conductingresearchorbeingexposedtoanimportantthematicortime-sensitivesituation.

Independent Student Travel:Therearelimitedfundsavailableonacompetitivebasisforstudentswhowishtoproposeinnovativeorotherwiseworthytravelfordefinedprojects.Thesetripscanbefundedinfullorinpart,dependingoncircumstancesandavailablefunds.Thesecanincludeinternships,independentreportingtrips,attendanceatconferences,andmore.

Nonaffiliated Study Abroad:Studentsmaychoosetostudyabroadatanotherinstitution.Plansaretosetupaformalaffiliatedprogram,butstudentscurrentlytakeleavefromNUandreceivetransfercredituponreturnfromanotherinstitution.

Travel Criteria and Authorization

Thetravelprogramisaprivilegenotanentitlementforstudents,thoughsomeisroutinelyofferedaspartofthescheduledacademicprogram(journalismresidencies,communicationexchange,courseswithtravel),muchofthetravelissubjecttoavailablefundsandselectiveapprovals.Preferenceisgiventotravelthat:

•hasacleareducationalorexperientialpurposewithlikelyreceivedvalueforstudents

•clearlygoes“beyondtheclassroom”

•involvesstudentsacrossbothmajors

•involvesfacultyfrombothmajorsandtheliberalarts

•involvesadeliverable—journalisticreport,videoproject,academicpaperorotheroutcome

•involvesstudentswhohavehadlimitedornotraveloverthosewithmultipletravelexperiences

Student Requirements:Studentstravelingmustfollowthestudentcodeofconductontripsandfollowtheinstructionsofthefacultyorstaffmemberleadingthetravel.Studentsareexpectedtotraveltoandfromthelocationwiththegroupongrouptravel.Exceptionstothismustberequestedoveronemonthinadvanceandwillnotbeallowedonmanytrips.Whenexceptionsaremade,awaivermustbesignedbythestudentandanyadditionalexpenseistheresponsibilityofthestudent.
