SEVENT SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Theme: . Theme: Holiness The word of God to Moses in the first reading, “Be holy, for I, the Lord your
God, am holy.” When we hear holiness talk, we usually think of far-away
places and people with strange lifestyle. We are much more at home with the
lifestyle of the rich and famous. Holiness is one of those topics which tends to
numb the mind and blur the vision of the best intentioned among us. Holiness
is for the priests, nuns, monks or saints, but not for me. I am just an average
Christian trying to make spiritual ends meet. Holiness-talk leaves most of us
more frustrated than inspired. It is not a finished product---holiness---but the
process that intrigues. We want to know how one can reach the goal. How can
we become holy?
There is a wonderful story told about the Indian religious leader, Gandhi. A
mother brought her daughter to Gandhi in hopes he could curb her love of
sweets. He told them to return to him in a week. When they returned, Gandhi
was asked by the mother why she had to wait a week. He replied “Until one
week ago, I myself was very fond of sweets.”
These wise words and actions of Gandhi offer us a keen insight into holiness.
Holiness requires effort. There is no magic quick fix on the road to heaven.
There is no substitute for mortifications, prayer and self-discipline. There is a
need to read the scriptures, the Church Fathers, and the inspiring writings of
men and women outstanding in faith.

Tema. Tema: Santidad La palabra de Dios a Moisés en la primera lectura: "Sed santos, porque yo, el
Señor vuestro Dios, soy santo." Cuando oímos la santidad hablar, solemos
pensar en lugares lejanos y personas con estilo de vida extraño. Estamos mu-
cho más en casa con el estilo de vida de los ricos y famosos. La santidad es
uno de esos temas que tiende a entumecer la mente y difuminar la visión de
los más bien intencionados entre nosotros. La santidad es para los sacerdotes,
monjas, monjes o santos, pero no para mí. Yo sólo soy un cristiano medio
tratando de hacer que los fines espirituales se cumplan. La santidad-charla
deja a la mayoría de nosotros más frustrados que inspirados. No es un produc-
to terminado --- santidad --- sino el proceso que intriga. Queremos saber
cómo se puede alcanzar la meta. ¿Cómo podemos llegar a ser santos?
Hay una historia maravillosa contada sobre el líder religioso indio, Gandhi.
Una madre llevó a su hija a Gandhi con la esperanza de que pudiera frenar sus
dulces de amor. Les dijo que regresaran a él en una semana. Cuando volvie-
ron, Gandhi le preguntó por qué tenía que esperar una semana. Él respondió:
"Hasta hace una semana, yo mismo era muy aficionado a lo dulce."
Estas sabias palabras y acciones de Gandhi nos ofrecen una penetrante visión
de la santidad. La santidad requiere esfuerzo. No hay solución mágica rápida
en el camino al cielo. No hay sustituto para las mortificaciones, la oración y la
autodisciplina. Hay una necesidad de leer las Escrituras, y los escritos inspira-
dores de los Padres de la Iglesia, y los hombres mujeres sobresalientes en la
fe.

Pero necesitamos ser más claros acerca de la : no es algo exterior lo
que tenemos que ganar. Más bien, la santidad es el proceso santidad
mediante el cual liberamos el espíritu que vive dentro de cada uno de
nosotros. San Pablo escribe a los Corintios: "¿No sabéis que sois
templo de Dios y que el espíritu de Dios mora en vosotros?" La san-
tidad no es algo que nos ponemos como un abrigo o un sombrero. La
santidad es vivir en la imagen de Aquel que nos ha formado amoro-
samente. Debemos ser cautelosos con cualquier promesa de santidad
que ofrezca santidad sin la cruz. El espíritu que vive dentro de cada
uno de nosotros viene del salvador que murió por nuestros pecados y
se levantó. La santidad y el discipulado son un viaje diario al Calva-
rio.
¿Qué significa esto específicamente? Santidad significa dejar que la
esencia divina del amor brille a través de nosotros. Este no es un
misticismo "otro mundo" que nos aleja de nuestra vida cotidiana.
Todo lo contrario; La santidad como amor activo en nosotros da po-
der a una nueva forma de vida y de vida. ¿Cuál es esta nueva forma?
La selección de Levítico y Mateo están de acuerdo: la santidad es un
cambio completo de corazón en nuestra relación con los demás. La
santidad se convierte en creíble en la medida en que vivimos vidas
de amor.
Las palabras de nuestra lectura del evangelio terminan con Jesús
diciendo: "En una palabra, debes ser perfecto como tu padre celestial
es perfecto." Estas palabras no son un llamado a la frustración y la
desesperación sin fin, sino a una toma diaria y el llevar de nuestro
Cruzar. Somos perfeccionados por el amor y haciendo nuestro mejor
para amar. Levítico pide perdón y amor al prójimo. El sermón en el
monte va más allá: Ama a tus enemigos, ruega por tus perseguidores.
Esto es muy específico, este-mundo y desafiante. Sólo piensa en
la persona la semana pasada que hizo tu vida incómoda. Basta
con pensar en el enemigo con el que desea incluso la puntuación.
Ahora, si realmente quieres ser santo, perdona y ora por ellos. Por
otra parte, no buscan venganza, sino que dan de sí mismos o sus
recursos a ellos cuando pregunte. ¿Podemos tener tal santidad?
Sí. ¿Por qué? Nuevamente San Pablo: "Todos estos son tuyos, y
tú eres de Cristo y Cristo es de Dios".

But we need to be more clear about holiness: it is not something
exterior that we have to win. Rather, holiness is the process by
which we liberate the spirit that lives within each of us. St. Paul
writes to the Corinthians: “Are you not aware that you are tem-
ple of God, and that the spirit of God dwells in you?” Holiness
is not something we put on like a coat or a hat. Holiness is living
in the image of the One who lovingly fashioned us. We need to
be cautious of any promise about holiness which offers saint-
hood without the cross. The spirit that lives within each of us
comes from the savior who died for our sins and rose. Holiness
and discipleship are a daily journey to Calvary.
What specifically does this mean? Holiness means to let the
divine essence of love shine through us. This is not some “other-
worldly” mysticism which removes us from our everyday lives.
Quite on the contrary; Holiness as love active in us empowers a
new way of life and living. What is this new way? The selection
from Leviticus and Matthew agree: holiness is a complete
change of heart in our relationship with others. Holiness be-
comes believable to the extent that we live lives of love.
The words of our gospel reading end with Jesus saying, “In a
word, you must be perfect as your heavenly father is perfect.”
These words are not a call to endless frustration and despair, but
to a daily taking up and carrying of our Cross. We are perfected
by love and doing our best to love. Leviticus calls for forgive-
ness and love of the neighbor. The sermon on the mount goes
even further: Love your enemies, pray for your persecutors.”
This is very specific, this-worldly and challenging. Just think of
the person last week who made your life uncomfortable. Just
think of the enemy with whom you want to even the score.
Now, if you really want to be holy, forgive and pray for them.
Moreover, do not seek revenge, but give of yourself or your
resources to them when ask. Can we have such a holiness? Yes.
Why? Again St. Paul: “All these are yours, and you are Christ’s
and Christ is God’s.”
