Second Sunday of Lent: Let us Listen to Jesus

In today’s gospel, Jesus takes three of his disciples on a small journey up the mountain. There they see Jesus in another way, he is transfigured and aglow, radiant like no other. He is talking with Moses and Elijah, nothing is said about their appearance, it didn’t stand out. They were focused on Jesus, listening to Him. Peter did not understand what was happening, but he did feel a sense of joy overcome him. That is why he wants to make three tents for these great figures, but a voice from the heavens interrupts and says: This is my beloved Son, listen to Him.” The place to dwell is not in this place or that place, outside of our being. We are called to listen to Him, the Word has to abide in us, live in us. The three disciples fell to the floor in fear. Was it a fear of the voice that came from the heavens or was it fear to the call to listen to Jesus? Jesus comes to them and tells to get up and not be afraid. Wasn’t this the same Jesus, who had called them by name to come and follow Him? Wasn’t this the same Jesus who had gone to the margins, who spoke with authority and acted with great power? Wasn’t this the One they were expecting or were they giving into the old ways, of the expectation of a Messiah in a worldly way, one less troublesome and who let things be? This is the beauty of this Lenten season, we get invited to get closer to Jesus, in a personal and transforming way. We see Him today in His transfiguration, we see Him many times addressing the crowds with compassion, healing the ill and lifting the downcast. We hear Him intimately tell his disciples that the hour is coming and they will take Him and kill Him, but He will rise up on the third day. The only thing different is that we know the outcome, we know where the road takes Him. Are we willing to follow? Are we willing to listen with all our being to what Jesus is asking us to do and to become? I pray, and I hope we all do as a community of believers, to trust in that call. To ask the Lord to give us the strength to be faithful till the end, and as we journey may we let others see that loving Jesus in us.

Segundo Domingo de Cuaresma: Escuchemos a Jesús

En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús lleva a tres de sus discípulos a una pequeña excursión por la montaña. Allí ven a Jesús de otra manera, está transfigurado y radiante, radiante como nada conocido. Él está hablando con Moisés y Elías, no se dice nada sobre sus apariencia, no se destacó. Estaban enfocados en Jesús. Pedro no entendió lo que estaba sucediendo, pero sintió una sensación de alegría que le sobrevino. Es por eso que quiere hacer tres carpas para estas grandes figuras, pero una voz del cielo interrumpe y dice: “Este es mi Hijo amado, escúchenlo”. El lugar para habitar no está en este lugar o en ese lugar, fuera de nuestro ser. Estamos llamados a escucharlo, la Palabra tiene que permanecer en nosotros, vivir en nosotros. Los tres discípulos cayeron al suelo con miedo. ¿Era miedo a la voz que venía de los cielos o miedo a la llamada a escuchar a Jesús? Jesús viene a ellos y les dice que se levanten y que no tengan miedo. ¿No era este el mismo Jesús, que los había llamado por su nombre para venir a seguirlo? ¿No era este el mismo Jesús que había ido a los margenes, que habló con autoridad y actuó con gran poder? ¿No era éste el que esperaban o estaban cediendo a las viejas costumbres, de la expectativa de un Mesías de una manera mundana, uno menos problemático y quién dejara las cosas como estaban? Esta es la belleza de esta temporada de Cuaresma, nos invita a acercarnos a Jesús, de una manera personal y transformadora. Lo vemos hoy en su transfiguración, lo vemos muchas veces dirigiéndose a las multitudes con compasión, sanando a los enfermos y levantando a los abatidos. Lo escuchamos decirle íntimamente a sus discípulos que se acerca la hora y que lo tomarán y lo matarán, pero Él se levantará en el tercer día. Lo único diferente es que nosotros sabemos el resultado, sabemos a dónde lo lleva el camino, ¿estamos dispuestos a seguirlo? ¿Estamos dispuestos a escuchar con todo nuestro ser lo que Jesús nos pide que hagamos y que seamos? Rezo y espero que todos, como comunidad de creyentes, confiemos en esa llamada. Pedirle al Señor que nos dé la fuerza para ser fieles hasta el final, y a medida que avanzamos podamos dejar que otros vean a ese Jesús amoroso viviendo en nosotros.

The 4 tips of Pope Francis to live Lent this year 2020 (Part 1) St. Paul writes to the Christians in Corinth: "In the name of Christ, we ask you to reconcile with God"

(2 Cor 5:20).

These are the 4 tips that Pope Francis gives us to live with sincerity, seriousness, and depth this 2020 Lenten season: 1. The Paschal Mystery, the foundation for conversion "The joy of the Christian springs from the listening and acceptance of the Good News of the death and resurrection of Jesus: the kerygma," says the Pope. And he continues: "Whoever believes in this announcement rejects the lie of thinking that it is we who give rise to our life, while in reality it is born of the love of God the Father." On the other hand, “if we prefer to hear the persuasive voice of the 'father of lies' (cf. Jn 8:45), we run the risk of sinking into the abyss of nonsense, experiencing hell already here on earth, as unfortunately we are witnessed many dramatic facts of the personal and collective human experience, ”he adds. For Francisco, "the Passover of Jesus is not an event of the past: by the power of the Holy Spirit it is always current and allows us to look and touch with faith the flesh of Christ in so many people who suffer." 2. Conversion urgency Pope Francis indicates that “it is healthy to contemplate the Paschal Mystery more deeply, for which we have received the mercy of God. The experience of mercy, indeed, is possible only in a heart-to-heart dialogue, from friend to friend. That is why prayer is so important in the Lenten season ” And it is “more than a duty, it shows us the need to correspond to the love of God, which always precedes and sustains us. In fact, the Christian prays with the knowledge of being loved without deserving it. Prayer can take different forms, but what counts in God's eyes is that it penetrates us, until it touches the hardness of our heart, to convert it more and more to the Lord and His will”. Francis argues that “the more we let ourselves be fascinated by his Word, the more we will be able to experience his free mercy towards us. Let us not pass in vain this time of grace, with the presumptuous illusion that it is we who decide the time and manner of our conversion to Him. ”

Los 4 consejos del Papa Francisco para vivir la Cuaresma de este año 2020: (1ª parte)

San Pablo escribe a los cristianos de Corinto: En nombre de Cristo os pedimos que os reconciliéis con Dios (2 Co 5, 20).

Estos son los 4 consejos que nos da el Papa Francisco para vivir con sinceridad, seriedad y profundidad esta Cuaresma 2020: 1. El Misterio pascual, fundamento de la conversión “La alegría del cristiano brota de la escucha y de la aceptación de la Buena Noticia de la muerte y resurrección de Jesús: el kerygma”, indica el Papa. Y prosigue: “Quien cree en este anuncio rechaza la mentira de pensar que somos nosotros quienes damos origen a nuestra vida, mientras que en realidad nace del amor de Dios Padre”. En cambio, “si preferimos escuchar la voz persuasiva del ‘padre de la mentira’ (cf. Jn 8, 45), corremos el riesgo de hundirnos en el abismo del sinsentido, experimentando el infierno ya aquí en la tierra, como lamentablemente nos testimonian muchos hechos dramáticos de la experiencia humana personal y colectiva”, agrega. Para Francisco, “la Pascua de Jesús no es un acontecimiento del pasado: por el poder del Espíritu Santo es siempre actual y nos permite mirar y tocar con fe la carne de Cristo en tantas personas que sufren”. 2. Urgencia de conversión El Papa Francisco indica que “es saludable contemplar más a fondo el Misterio pascual, por el que hemos recibido la misericordia de Dios. La experiencia de la misericordia, efectivamente, es posible solo en un diálogo de corazón a corazón, de amigo a amigo. Por eso la oración es tan importante en el tiempo cuaresmal”. Y es que, “más que un deber, nos muestra la necesidad de corresponder al amor de Dios, que siempre nos precede y nos sostiene. De hecho, el cristiano reza con la conciencia de ser amado sin merecerlo. La oración puede asumir formas distintas, pero lo que verdaderamente cuenta a los ojos de Dios es que penetre dentro de nosotros, hasta llegar a tocar la dureza de nuestro corazón, para convertirlo cada vez más al Señor y a su voluntad”, comenta. Francisco sostiene que, “cuanto más nos dejemos fascinar por su Palabra, más lograremos experimentar su misericordia gratuita hacia nosotros. No dejemos pasar en vano este tiempo de gracia, con la ilusión presuntuosa de que somos nosotros los que decidimos el tiempo y el modo de nuestra conversión a Él”.

Infant Baptism Birth to 6 yrs. Infant baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of every month. Baptism preparation class for parents and Godparents are held on the Tuesday prior to the Baptism Sunday. Parent(s) or Godparent(s), please bring an original birth certificate of the child to the main office where you can begin the process of registration for this beautiful sacrament.

The program follows Diocesan Guidelines for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children. The hours for children's faith formation classes are Sunday, 9:30 A.M. -1:00 P.M.

Pentecost Confirmation 16 yrs. and older Are you baptized and received First Holy Communion but have not completed the Sacrament of Confirmation and you are over the age of 16? Our Confirmation only program begins in January in preparation for Pentecost Confirmation typically at the end of May or beginning of June.

Anointing of the sick Call (718) 455-6864 to make arrangements for the sick person to receive Holy Communion or the Anointing of the Sick at home.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) (Becoming a Catholic)

Are you baptized? Have you received First Holy Communion? Are you Confirmed? Adults and youth at least 16 yrs. of age seeking full initiation into the Catholic Church are invited to enter into a process of faith formation. RCIA classes are all year round.

LOS SACRAMENTOS Bautismo para bebes nacimiento a 6 años

Los bautismos para bebes se celebran el primer domingo de cada mes. La clase de preparación del bautismo para los padres y padrinos es el martes antes del domingo del bautismo. Padres o Padrinos, traiga el certificado de nacimiento original del niño a la oficina principal donde pueden comenzar el proceso de inscripción para este hermoso sacramento.

Formación de Fe para Niños 7 años hasta 15 años (Bautismo, Primera Comunión, Confirmación) El programa de formación de fe para nuestros niños se prepara los niños para sus Sacramentos. El programa sigue las Directrices Diocesanas para el Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de los Niños. Las horas para las clases son domingo, 9:30 A.M. -1:00 P.M.

Confirmación de Pentecostés 16 años y adelante ¿Se ha bautizado y recibido la Primera Comunión pero no ha completado el Sacramento de la Confirmación y tiene más de 16 años de edad? Nuestro programa de Confirmación solo comienza en enero en preparación para la Confirmación de Pentecostés típicamente en mayo o junio.

Sacramento de los enfermos Llame a (718) 455-6864 para hacer arreglos para que el enfermo reciba la Santa Comunión o la Unción de los Enfermos en su casa.

Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos: R.I.C.A. (Convertirse Católico)

¿Está bautizado? ¿Has recibido la Primera Comunión? ¿Está Confirmado? Se invita a los adultos y jóvenes 16 años y adelante, que buscan la iniciación completa en la Iglesia Católica para entrar en un proceso de formación de fe. Las clases de R.I.C.A. son todo el año.
