(Continued from Page 1)The Beveridge curve reflects acurve fitted empirically to observedcombinations of unemployment andvacancy rates at each instant in time;a curve that can also be interpretedas reflecting the steady staterelationship between unemploymentand vacancies. The Beveridge Curvepertains to information about thematches between the vacanciesposted by firms and by workers.Following the recent economiccrisis, the matching rates in the UShave decreased. Identifying thecauses of this decrease is anecessary step in identifying theappropriate policy response. In the lecture, Prof. Diamondpresented several stylized facts fromthe US labor market, indicatorsallowing for a discussion of whether

the decrease in matches was due tothe business cycle conditionschanging in the US or to a trendchange. Identifying whether theeffects are dominantly cyclical orstructural provides a basis for policyguidance. The evidence anddiscussion presented by Prof.Diamond aimed at determiningwhether the phenomenon was amovement along the Beveridge curveor a shift in the curve. Movementsalong the Beveridge Curve suggestthat there are cyclical effects in thelabor market, whereas shifts of thecurve suggest that there has been astructural change, creating adominating structural effect. In thelecture, Prof. Diamond presentedstylized facts that provided evidencethat cyclical effects rather than astructural change have resulted in

lower matching rates. Prof. Diamond was one of thethree 2010 economics Nobellaureates, who were recognized fortheir work on the frictions in thelabor market job search process andtheir implications forunemployment. The lecture wasbased on this search theoryframework, which allows foridentifying and discussing thepatterns of hires and separationsindividually, rather than the sheerdifference between the two thatreflects the net employment patterns in a given period. Prof.Diamond reiterated the importanceof doing so, given the very highlevels of hires and separations that are hidden in the relatively lowlevels of employment generation.

hrough the Magnifier If you are Turkish, oryou’ve stayed in Turkey forsome time, it is most likelythat you’ve visited İstanbul. It’s amust-do to walk the streets of thatmysterious and beautiful city, andhave a firsthand experience of itsfabric. My personal attachment toİstanbul started rather late, unfortunately. Even though I’d beenthere before as a “tourist,” thissummer I got to see what it feels liketo be in İstanbul. My trip left mewith many unforgettable memories, and one of them is visiting theİstanbul Modern Museum for thefirst time.As its name suggests, it’s amuseum of modern art, and you canspend hours walking around in it. Isimply loved most of the exhibitionsand works of art, but there was onework in particular that really had aneffect on me: “Bring Yourself to Me”by Handan Börüteçene. In thisinstallation, which is set up in thelower lobby of the museum, you see19 chairs and 19 old suitcases, with30 magnifiers mounted on wheeledstands placed around them. It’s awork about immigration, and all

those suitcases belong to Turkishmigrants to France, while the chairshave been brought from the NationalMuseum of the History of Migrationin Paris. The viewer is encouragedto retrace history by looking at thesuitcases through the magnifiers tosee the marks on them. It’s ajourney that takes one back in timeand enables one to recreate thememories of the old. While you’restill amazed by how much of thepast you can imagine by only“looking” at some old suitcases,Börüteçene strikes back again with abreathtaking poem on the wall, which starts with these lines:“And thus spoke the place:Bring me the thrills of the firsttime you saw me,Each of which became a path foryou in a different work. Bring yourself to me.” I don’t know about you, butreading those lines sent a shiverdown my spine and touched thetraveler that abides in me. I’vealways loved traveling, not just theidea of seeing somewhere new orexperiencing a different place, butsimply being on the road as well.Whenever I get on a bus, in a car oron a plane to go to a different city, afeeling of excitement permeates myinner being. It isn’t a joyful shoutlike “Yayyy, I’m moving again!” It’s amixed sense of adventure, serenityand fear, even if I’m going to a placeI’ve been to many times before. Thus, I knew what she meant by“the thrills,” yet I’m not surewhether I’ve ever brought myself to

a place fully, or whether there is aplace that would call me to it. I continued reading the poem, smiled at the fact that she quotedRumi, and when I came to the laststanza, I stood there, transfixed withastonishment: “Bring me people,/May each bethe storytellers of their hometowns./Bring me yourdreams,/Those dreams that turnedme into you, head to foot, as Ilived./Bring me my ownmemory/That memory I yearn tomeet./Bring me everything,/Eachthing the everything of somethingelse.”These lines, combined with theexhibition, were so powerful that Ihad to write them down and dwellon them before I could write aboutthem. Even though it’s been twomonths now, I see that I’m still notready -- maybe I’ll never be. If thefirst stanza of the poem touched thetraveler in me, these lines spoke tomy very soul, as a dreamer, as astoryteller. Being a storyteller issomething I’ve always enjoyed. My

love for writing started quite early, and the only thing that dates back toan earlier time is my love of reading. However, accepting the fact that Iam a dreamer was way harder thanthat. I thought it sounded a bit tooromantic -- maybe I was afraid ofending up like Don Quixote -- but ittook me quite a while to come toterms with that part of my identity. Now that I think of it, being adreamer, a stargazer, is one of thebest “jobs” one could ask for, and Iwouldn’t trade it for the world. If you are like me, if you know thejoys of being quixotic, you’reprobably nodding and smiling rightnow, but if you’re not, I stronglyrecommend that you take courageand start dreaming. Do whatever youcan to bring those dreams intoreality, to make them true; but evenmore importantly, encourage yourfellow dreamers. After all, aren’t weall migrants who dream of home, carrying ourselves in suitcases withthe hope of finding someone whowon’t be repelled by looking at usthrough a magnifier?

T

uillotine TreeI must confess that Iam, once again, in a pinch-- for the last two days, Ihave been searching to and fro for aset of vials that I require for a testthat should not have taken more than20 minutes, and the sheer insanity ofthe situation has taken quite a toll onmy nerves. With a project reportlooming and the crucial samples lostin transit, I believe you willappreciate the fact that writing aproper column is the least of myworries – though the necessity ofwriting one still stands. So, I will not,as had been planned, deliver acolumn on tsukumogami. (These areJapanese object-spirits that formwhen an oft-used item gains a soul ofits own, and they come in adelightful variety of shapes, includingsentient vegetable graters and aghost restaurant that eats itscustomers. My favorite, the kameosa,is an old earthen jar that bears

cracks that look just like eyes and amouth, and can magically produce aninfinite supply of whatever liquid itused to keep. There’s somethingcharming about an old pickle jar witha mouth that vomits forth an endlessstream of pickled onions, and thereare few things I wouldn’t do to get myhands on a kameosa that produced, say, chocolate fondue.) I will insteadfall back once again on familiarterritory, and this week’s topic will beon biology -- trees, to be specific(there’s a lot to say about trees, ofcourse, and I will only be talkingabout a couple of species). You might recall from the previouscolumn that orchids can be incrediblyrefined parasites, and it should comeas no surprise that parasitic plantsare not limited to small, tree-inhabiting weeds -- indeed, there’snothing that prevents a parasiticplant from rivaling or even dwarfingits host in size, as is seen in thegigantic flowers of Rafflesia arnoldiithat nestle on the relatively puny vineTetrastigma. And while the rafflesiasare famed for their massive flowers, and are even listed at times as thelargest parasitic plants, the latterhonor actually falls to Nuytsiafloribunda, an Australian tree thatcan grow up to 15 meters in height. The largest member of the mistletoeorder, this hemiparasitic tree retains

its ability to photosynthesize, butwater is a valuable resource in thearid regions in which it prospers --and the roots of Nuytsia, able to coverdistances over 100 meters and armedwith specialized organs that pierceand extend into the roots of othertrees, are clearly well-equipped tosecure the mineral nutrients andwater that the plant needs. So greedyis this mistletoe-tree that its rootshave been observed to attack anddamage underground cables -- or, asWikipedia puts it, “it mistakes thecables for host roots and tries toparasitize them using itssclerenchymatic guillotine,” though Isuspect that the real reason is notthat the tree takes the cables formetallic roots: no indeed, the cablesare attacked on purpose, and Nuytsiais slowly adapting to feed onelectricity. Watch out, Biollante, youmay have a rival in the making. However impressive Nuytsia’sroot-jacking trick may be, it is limitedto only a select few plants -- the trueweapon of trees is their ability toproduce a stunning array of toxinsand signal chemicals (which recruitparasitic insects to hunt down avariety of pests) to protect themselvesfrom herbivores (many herbivoresare, in turn, quite unfazed by thisdevelopment, and a great number ofcaterpillars even derive their own

unpalatability from the leaves theyeat). But even among the poisonoustrees, the manchineel is infamous forits incredible potency: a fan made ofa manchineel branch may causeblisters when waved (if you procuresome thick gloves and eye protection, you can tie the branches on yourperson and become the nefarioussupervillain Man-chineel! -- I’msurprised there aren’t any comicbooks that use this idea), and so willwind that blows through manchineelgroves -- though neither of theseeffects compares to the pain of takingshelter under the tree during astorm, and the manchineel fruit iscalled the “little apple of death” forgood reason. P.S. Pokemon X and Y came out the12th, and it’s your duty to the spiritof nostalgia to play them. The newregion is based on France, so go aheadand try to see if anywhere seemsfamiliar (there’s a comparative list outon the Internet, but that’s cheating). Also, I’ve caught wind that you can scale-- and battle on -- the Eiffel Tower, andthat this generation’s offensivejuggernaut of the Dragon type is a giantsnail (clearly one of the best things toconvert into a dragon, and I suspect itmight be partially based on theCarcolh). …The French will never be rid ofthat stereotype, will they?

MUSIC

adness and theDamage Done: TheBirth of BlackjazzThis week we are featuring theNorwegian experimental blackjazzistsShining in the musicrecommendations. Shining wasformed in 1999 as a jazz quartet.Their first album was a very well-composed, complex and technical, butstill melodic jazz album. Yet, it didnot offer anything very new orpersonal (although I recommend it tofans of the genre). However, becauseof the progressive and experimentaltendencies of Shining's frontman,Jorgen Munkeby, there was a slightshift away from their classical musicalapproach toward experimentation inevery album after that. The breakthrough came with theirfifth studio album, “Blackjazz,” in2010. The title of the album definesthe newer style of the band prettywell. The new Shining employssophisticated and technical jazzelements in the background, adding

[email protected] ALTUĞ KARAKURT (EE/II)

to these very heavy and experimentallead partitions, such as distortedvocals, heavy bass lines with electroniceffects and atonal saxophone andclarinet solos. They express a harshand often aggressive mood usingtheir technical, progressivecomposition skills and offer a verysophisticated, mostly personal anddiverse sound. One of the most noteworthy thingsabout the band is their liveperformances. Even though they usemixing, production and electroniceffects frequently, they are still ableto preserve their sound on stage aswell as in their studio recordings.

If you are curious about Shining'smusic, keep in mind that there isanother band with the same namefrom Sweden. If you look for the bandas “Shining NOR,” you will find theNorwegian blackjazzist Shining much

more easily.Check out the songs: Their cover of“21st Century Schizoid Man,”“Madness and the Damage Done”and, as an example of their early stuff,“Hell's Bells.” I suggest you choosetheir live recordings, sincethey are as good as thestudio versions.Recommended for:Their earlier stuff for jazzfans, and their Blackjazzstyle for experimentalmusic lovers and admirersof heavy or progressivemusic.Brief Music Update

- The Ankara Nordic Music Festivalis coming up -- it will be held atCermodern on October 29-31. This isa relatively small festival, hosting onlythree bands. The guests are LarsDanielsson, the Tord GustavsenQuartet and Beady Belle. However, don't let the name of the event deceiveyou -- these bands play jazz (TordGustavsen, Lars Danielsson) or jazz-based female vocal-oriented music(Beady Belle), not Nordic ethnicmusic. All of them are prettyinfluential representatives of theirgenre. If you have time, be sure tocheck it out. - Another interesting event is theATMM (Audio Technologies forMusic and Media) conference, whichwill take place October 31-November

1 on Bilkent’s Main Campus.Throughout both days, variouspresenters will give talks on the musicindustry, sound engineering andsound design. This conference isopen to everyone who is interested inmusic and sound ingeneral. The program willfeature detailed technicalpresentations forprofessionals in thesefields as well as talksgeared more toward a non-specialist audience, requiring no previousbackground.Mixtape #1

T

n Thursday, a “special”game was held at theBilkent StudentDormitories Sports Hallbetween the Bilkent Universitybasketball team and the Turkish special

athletes’ national basketball team. The game was organized byENDOST of TDP (Social AwarenessProjects), in order to counter the biasagainst mentally disabled athletes. “Special athletes are not differentfrom other athletes,” said the head ofthe Turkish Special Athletes SportsFederation, Birol Aydın, speaking toviewers just before the game. “Whenthey have the opportunity, they can do

whatever they want. Try to give them achance to introduce themselves. Thisis great opportunity for them to say‘We’re in!’ It’s great to be at Bilkentwith Bilkent students.” The game took place over two 10-minute periods. Although the specialteam was the guest team, thosewatching the game cheered them everytime they scored. The special team wasvery good at both defensive and

offensive rebounds, while the Bilkentteam’s strength lay in three-point shots. The final score of the game was 26-26. This game served as a practicematchup for the Turkish specialathletes’ national team before the 7thINAS World BasketballChampionship, which will be held inAnkara October 20-28. We at Bilkent wish them asuccessful tournament!
