January February Preaching Series: why church? When so much is competing for our time, why church? Come and not only discover but experience the power of being a part of a worshiping community — a community that shapes our identity, inspires us, walks with us through the ups and downs of life and gives us purpose and mission. Come discover the joy of community through preaching and music that transforms lives with the healing power of Christ’s love. We will be looking at the parables and how they have wisdom for us today in our call to experience, to bring, and to be the kingdom of heaven on earth.

lesson Hebrews 4:12-13Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, pierc-ing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account.

I see a distant land: it shines so clear.Sometimes it seems so far, sometimes so near.Come, join together, take the dusty road;Help one another: share the heavy load. The journey may be long: no end in sight:There may be hills to climb, or giants to fight:But if you’ll take my hand,We’ll walk together toward the landOf freedom, freedom, freedom.

I hear a distant song: it fills the air.I hear it, deep and strong, rise up in prayer:“O Lord, we are many; help us to be one.Heal our divisions: let thy will be done.”

I know the time will come when war must cease:A time of truth and love, a time of peace. The people cry, “How long?Till all our world can join the songOf freedom, freedom.”

I touch a distant hand and feel its glow,The hand I hoped was there: at last I know.Swords into ploughshares: can it all be true?Friends out of strangers: start with me and you.I see another time, another placeWhere we can all be one, one human race. The walls will melt away,We’ll come together on the dayOf freedom, freedom, freedom.

lesson Jeremiah 15:15-16 Read in unison O lord, you know; remember me and visit me, and bring down retribution for me on my persecutors. In your forbearance do not take me away; know that on your account I suffer insult. Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I am called by your name, O lord, God of hosts.

Holy gosPel Matthew 13:10-17 All: Glory to you, O Lord. Then the disciples came and asked Jesus, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” He answered, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. For to those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. The reason I speak to them in parables is that ‘seeing they do not perceive, and hearing they do not listen, nor do they understand.’ With them indeed is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah that says:

‘You will indeed listen, but never understand, and you will indeed look, but never perceive.

For this people’s heart has grown dull, and their ears are hard of hearing,

and they have shut their eyes; so that they might not look with their eyes,

and listen with their ears, and understand with their heart

and turn— and I would heal them.’But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. Truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.” All: Praise to you, O Christ.
