“Pocahontas County Iowa History” is Now Digitized and at Your Local Library!“Pocahontas County Iowa History” is now digitized and on Pocahontas County libraries’ newspaper archive sites. This project is a collaboration between the Pocahontas County Historical Society, whose members and friends compiled the book in 1981, and Pocahontas County libraries. Last fall when local librarians discussed future county-wide projects, the possibility of making this book accessible and searchable online came up. Laurens librarian Glenda Mulder contacted the Advantage Company, which the four County libraries with newspaper databases use, for an estimate. “When the quote came back quite reasonable, I knew we would be able to proceed” Mulder said. With the blessing of the rest of the County librarians, she contacted Marcia Leu, President of the Pocahontas County Historical Society about the project. Marcia saw a future in the collaboration and put it on the agenda for the next meeting. Members unanimously approved, with one citing the opinion that since they were the originators of the book, they should foot the bill to make it usable for an entire new generation. Pocahontas Library had an extra copy of the book, so librarian Lola DeWall boxed it up and mailed it off to

Cedar Rapids. The Advantage Company then unbound the book, scanned and digitized the pages. At the Library & Announcements

At the Library with Glenda MulderJanuary 11, 2017

Have you heard the good news about our Digital Archive? The Pocahontas Historical Society recently agreed to pay to have “Pocahontas County Iowa History” digitized and added to the County libraries’ collections! This is the book they compiled in 1981. I’m so excited about this because I feel this book has great stories in it that have been underused because the book wasn’t indexed. Dorothy Lamberti was in the library when I got the news that it was up on our site, so I searched “scythe.” There were quite a few results, but the two that interested me most were in this book. I followed the links and read personal stories of local residents using scythes on their farms in Pocahontas County. These stories may be incorporated into their “From Scythes to Silos” program. This book joins our centennial book “Laurens 100” and the Laurens Sun from 1884-2014 at http://laurens.advantage-preservation.com/ Or if it’s easier, just follow the link on our website. No password is needed! New fiction books recently include: The Sleepwalker by Chris Bohjalian, Below the Belt by Stuart Woods, Wyoming Brave by Diana Palmer, Lord of the Privateers by Stephanie Laurens, The Midnight

Bell by Jack Higgins, Expecting to Die by Lisa Jackson, Two Days Gone by Randall Silvis, The Mistress by

Danielle Steel and Tom Clancy: true faith and allegiance by Mark Grealey In nonfiction we’ve received Hidden Figures: The

American dream and the untold story of the black women who helped win the space race and Courage to Soar; a body in motion, a life in balance by Simone Biles . New DVDs include Storks, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, The Secret Life of Pets and Jason Bourne. Our Book Club Choice for January is The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and their epic quest for gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown. This book has been on my reading list and will finally get crossed off this month. Our catalog states that this book, “Traces the story of an American rowing team from the University of Washington that defeated elite rivals at Hitler's 1936 Berlin Olympics, sharing the experiences of their enigmatic coach, a visionary boat builder, and a homeless teen rower.“ I have heard such good reviews of this book from our local library patrons and am looking forward to reading it! We will meet Monday, January 23 to discuss this book.

UPCOMING EVENTS• Tell Me a Yarn every Monday from

5-7 p.m. • Card Making every 4th Tuesday

• Take it Tuesday - 1st Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m.

Thank You!A big thank you to my family, friends and neighbors for all the lovely cards, kind words, gifts and telephone calls for my birthday! The only bad part about being an old white haired woman is that I can always be identified by the “road ragers” as the one holding up the long line of traffic as I’m the only one driving the speed limit! Please bear with me as I would like to keep my license another year if possible!

Thanks Again!Joanne Crotty

Extension News

Winter Webinars Explore Supporting Food SecurityThe Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Gardener program will explore how Master Gardeners can support food security during its winter webcast series. The 2017 series will offer Master Gardeners six educational hours while taking a look at ways to measure volunteer efforts, how to utilize small garden spaces, learn about food safety in the garden and more. In 2016, Iowa Master Gardeners donated over 60,000 pounds of produce to local food banks. In 2017, Master Gardener volunteers will continue to build on these successes. The Master Gardener 2017 Winter Webcasts, called Growing Together, are scheduled to be shown at the ISU Extension and Outreach Pocahontas County office on January 25, February 22, and March 22. All three videos will be shown at Pocahontas County Extension and Outreach Office (305 North Main St.) Donation and Small-Space Gardens, the first of the three-part series, allows viewers to learn about results from seven ISU Research Farm Demonstration Gardens where Master Gardeners grew produce for donation. It will be shown on January 25, 2017 at 4:30pm. Cindy Haynes, associate professor and extension specialist in horticulture, will share production and donation data gathered through citizen science. Participants will also learn how to create an efficient small-space garden from Denny Schrock, coordinator of the Master Gardener program. The second webcast in the series will be shown on February 22, 2017 at 4:30pm. Impact Matters explores how to measure the impact of volunteer projects and how to build strong partnerships for effective community programs. Christine Hradek, coordinator of the Buy. Eat. Live Healthy. program with ISU Extension and Outreach, will present various ways to communicate the impact that Master Gardeners are having on communities as a result of their volunteer projects. Growing and Harvesting Vegetables is the third in the series and will be shown on March 22, 2017 at 4:30pm. Learn about growing and harvesting asparagus from Ajay Nair, assistant professor in horticulture and extension vegetable production specialist. Also, building on food safety practices for vegetable gardens will be discussed by Shannon Coleman, assistant professor in food science and human nutrition and a Human Sciences Extension and Outreach specialist. To register for any of the webinars, contact the ISU Extension and Outreach Pocahontas County office at 712-335-3103 or [email protected].

Women, Land, and Legacy Learning SessionJoin us for Pocahontas and Buena Vista Counties Women, Land, and Legacy Learning Session on January 17, 2017 at 10:00am. Peter Bixel from SciMax Solutions will present at the Pocahontas County Extension and Outreach Office (305 North Main St., Pocahontas). Please register by calling the Pocahontas County Extension and Outreach Office at 712-335-3103 or email [email protected].

Mid-Life and Beyond: Picture Your FutureWhen you picture your future, you may see hundreds of possibilities. If you start planning today, you can customize your picture and begin working toward financial security in retirement. How many more years do you plan to work? For people looking for a life plan that’s more than a sketch on the back of a napkin, the January 18, 2017 interactive workshop is for you! How can I begin to create a future retirement picture? This important question will be addressed in an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach workshop on Wednesday, January 18, 2017, 6-7:30pm at Pocahontas County Extension and Outreach, 305 N. Main St., Pocahontas. Mid-Life and Beyond: Picture Your Future is designed to help you create a plan for your future. The workshop provides information needed by those approaching retirement with resources to create a Picture for Your Future, Update Your Home for a Lifetime of Living, consider Retirement Transitions: Social Security, Medicare and connect with the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP). The workshop outlines criteria to consider prior to retirement and planning for retirement income. “For most of us,” says Carol Ehlers, Human Sciences Specialist in family finance, “we’ve not taken the time to consider our goals, wishes, wants, and desires as the beginning point in planning for our later life. One important question is whether we’ll continue to live in the current home or community or seek out options that provide certain services.” A fee of $15 for the Mid-life and Beyond: Picture Your Future workshop will help to off-set direct expenses and to support the Human Sciences County Extension Program. Register by January 16, 2017 by contacting the Pocahontas County Extension and Outreach office, call 712-335-3103 or email [email protected] to register!
