Dear All,

Wow! What a wonderful effort the Oaklands staff and

students put into their concert on Tuesday evening.

With a royal visit to start the evening, through the dou-

ble decker red bus (which was obviously used to Lon-

don driving), the lone piper and the history of the kilts,

the crocodile travelling through many countries, the

dancers from the Moulin Rouge (with hairy legs), the

Jamaican bobsled team (I am not sure that was an offi-

cially sanctioned event in London), to the ‘cream’ of the

evening with Japan, the show was great. Congratula-

tions to our staff and students!

Thank you to the many family and friends who attended

and shared the night with us.

Tomorrow is a momentous day for our Year 12 student.

When she walks out the gates at 3.25pm, she will have

completed her formal secondary schooling. Whilst she

will still be meeting with our teachers in preparation for

the Higher School Certificate next month, she will not

be attending classes.

In the Year 2000, when most ‘Year 12’s’ commenced

school, the world did not know what an iPads or an iPh-

one was. Our classrooms did not have interactive white-

boards and some of the subjects they are studying for

the HSC were not possible. The world has moved on

quickly and it is our hope that our students will leave

our schools prepared to meet the challenges that await.

On behalf of our staff and students I wish Demi, all the

very best for the future!

With the newsletter today, we are sending home student

their schooling. Thank you!

Vicki Harris - Principal

What a busy end of term we have had.

For the last five weeks we have had Miss Jenna Lane

working as a practicum teacher with Years 2 and 3. The

students have loved having Miss Lane and have learnt

so much. I congratulate Jenna on her efforts this five

weeks and wish her the very best in her future teaching

career. You may have seen her wonderful play produc-

tion on Scotland which she produced with the Year 3

students.

Years 2, 3 & 4 had a wonderful time at the Tom Haw-

kins 12 aside football carnival. They played so well and

came home full of excitement and self esteem. I thank

Andrew Richardson for always including us in his area

carnivals. They are such a joy to our students.

Unfortunately Jan Cooke was unable to come to do her

writing technology days as she was like so many of us,

sick. We hope to get her to join us next term.

Well done to the students who competed in the Riverina

Primary Athletics Carnival. They all tried so hard and

achieved great results.

Sam Owen 12-13yrs Shot Put (13th)

Courtney Foster, George Sandral and Logan Kerr (8th)

Our Olympics day at Urana was a wonderful success.

All the students enjoyed it thoroughly and came home

elated despite fierce winds, dust and strange weather.

Well done to Miss Elith for the success. It took a huge

amount of organization to make it run so smoothly and

we Oaklands people really appreciate your efforts.

Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 went to Wagga on Tuesday 11th of

October to compete in the Wagga Speech Eisteddfod.

They recited 2 choral items as a speaking choir and

blew the judges away. We competed in the section for

one and two teacher schools. There were only 2 schools

in our section and we won by a nail biting 1 point. Ms

Outram and I were so proud of the way in which they

presented themselves. They looked spectacular in their

uniform. They stood and watched Mrs Stein to perfec-

tion and like little pros even covered a mistake with no

facial give-aways. Mrs Stein has done a remarkable job

with speech in our school and this effort is a great suc-

cess to her. Well done Mrs Stein and the wonderful 3, 4,

5 and 6s.

The concert has dominated our lives for the last few

weeks and all students have been giving it their best

shot. If you were at the concert you would have been

wowed by the efforts of all the students and the amazing

younger students who were line perfect on the night.

Concerts take dedication from both students and staff

and we saw plenty of this over the past few weeks. Well

done everyone and thank you for going beyond the line

to make our concert such a success.

The results of the Maths and English competition have

now arrived and we will present these at an assembly

early next term.

The holidays are looming and we are finishing with

healthy food days and celebrations.

One big celebration is for Demi. I have had the joy of

being involved with Demi’s education and personal de-

velopment for many years and I am so proud of the

lovely young lady we see heading off to do her exams

next term and then out into the big wide world to make

her mark. Thank you, Demi, for always being there for

us. Good luck in your exams from all staff and students

of OCS.

The end of term brings another change to our school. Ms

Harris is moving on to another job, organizing the fi-

nances across schools. This is a very big job for her and

I congratulate her on being selected and wish her very

well in the future. She will be back to help us with our

finances and we feel pleased to know if we need help

that we will know someone at the top. We thank you Ms

Harris for the positive input you have had on our school

as we strive to be innovative and maintain a sustainable

future for our central schools. Your knowledge of the

running of schools has been very beneficial to our learn-

ing executive.

Happy holidays everyone and remember that school

starts on MONDAY, 8th October. The Alpha Show is

on the first Tuesday and Rand Super 8s is on the Friday.

Cheese Day at Henty

Secondary Food Technology and Agriculture students

from Oaklands and Urana schools finished their dairy

production unit with a visit to the Big Cheese Day Out.

The students began the unit with an excursion that in-

cluded a visit to Boosey Creek Cheese Dairy and facto-

ry. They then made their own camembert cheese at Oak-

lands under the supervision of Mrs Marshall, Mr Robey

Cara Bott and Nicole Rendle-Smith.

The day was a great success with our cheeses coming in

the top third. Agriculture students Marnie Walker and

Dominic Buntin put their class work to use and won the

competition relating to the nutritional value composition

of milk products. The students had to produce an adver-

tisement and it was great to see the imagination and ar-

tistic skills that resulted.

Bonnie Bateman was interviewed by the ABC and the

interview was broadcast on the rural section a few days

later.

COWS CREATE CAREERS

PRESENTATION DAY - FACT SHEET 10/09/2012

A CHEESY GRIN FOR

SOME LUCKY STUDENTS’

Dairy Australia hosted the Cows Create Careers – Cam-

embert in the Classroom ‘Big Day Out’ presentation

day on Monday 10th September 2012 at the Henty

Bowls Club.

The project involved 14 teachers from seven schools

across the Wodonga, Wagga Wagga and broader re-

gions. The schools involved in the project are; Billa-

bong High School, Finley High School, Junee High

School, Mount Carmel Christian College, Oakland Cen-

tral School, Kooringal High School & Wagga Wagga

Christian College.

The project was designed to encourage secondary

school teachers and students to examine the Australian

Dairy Industry and its products. The project framework

involved training teachers to make Camembert Cheese

and transferring this knowledge to their students.

The Dairy Australia - Camembert in the Classroom pre-

senter and taste judge was Russell Smith, Deputy Chief

Judge of the Australian Grand Dairy Awards.

The project involved student teams’ making Camembert

Cheese in the Classroom and designing a multimedia

advertisement as to ‘Why Dairy is an Important Part of

Our Diet’.

The cheeses and advertisements were judged at the ‘Big

Day Out’ Presentation Day. Russell Smith along with

accredited judges awarded the winning cheese of the

region.

A judging panel representing Dairy Australia judged

and awarded the winning multimedia advertisement.

There were 25 advertisements judged on the day.

The aims of the project were to:

Train teachers to make Camembert cheese and

transfer this knowledge to a class of students.

Introduce students to dairy industry manufactur-

ing career pathways.

Provide a platform to introduce students to the

Australian dairy industry and its products.

Involve dairy farmers and manufacturing advo-

cates who have vision and dairy industry

knowledge to encourage and support students

with the project.

Reward successful students and schools at the

‘Big Day Out’ Presentation Day.

The Presentation & Awards Ceremony were held on

Monday 10th September 2012 at the Henty Bowls Club,

Henty.

A school prize of $500

for the winning cheese

and $250 for the winning

multimedia advertise-

ment were judged and

awarded on this day. For
