What is the ILTS all about?

It is one of the main aims of IYDA to encourage the active involvement of young people in their societies, as well as to enhance their skills in order to be qualified enough to lead campaigns and become active mediators of social change. Against the background of the great revolutionary incidents in Egypt and Tunisia in January 2011 in terms of their inspirational impact on the rest of the Arab world, IYDA together with Action Aid decided to launch the first ILTS in Egypt. The program’s principal objective is to empower young, motivated students to organize and implement projects related to social change. To this end, the seminar will equip the participants with the necessary soft skills to lead their groups in campaigns and work camps concerning the following, distinct topics: youth leadership, project management, communication skills, conflict management, as well as motivational and youth empowerment training. In order to foster the participants’ leadership capabilities, the ILTS will employ a particular methodological model: Each student will lead a project group while at the same time being part of another group in the form of a normal member. Eventually, since participants from all over the world will take part in the seminar, the rationale behind the program is to encourage the young leaders to perceive themselves as global citizens as well as to critically reflect upon issues of global injustice. In a nutshell, the ILTS is committed to the famous paradigm: Think globally, act locally!

The Organizers:

The Intercultural Youth Dialogue Association (IYDA) was founded in 2009 by a group of highly motivated young Egyptians from diverse professional backgrounds. Our goal has been, and still is, to foster intercultural communication and understanding, since we believe that cultural diversity is the common heritage of humanity. Therefore, we regularly organize exchange programs as well as trainings on leadership and communication skills in order to spread our ideals to as many societies as possible. IYDA is registered as a nongovernmental and not-for-profit organization at the Egyptian ministry of social solidarity and is run by our members on a voluntary basis. Many of us are actively involved in other youth organizations or have the experience of representing their communities in regional and international events and forums. We are partners with Youth for Understanding and France Volontaires, two well-known organizations who contribute to intercultural dialogue and youth capacity building on a global scale. For more information about our events and activities, please visit our website: www.iyda.org.eg

Type of Activity:

The International Leadership Training Seminar is a six-day seminar where you will develop skills in youth leadership, project management, communication, group dynamics, conflict resolution, as well as motivation and empowerment. Your participation in the seminar will qualify you to lead international volunteer groups, international work camps or campaign activities within a NGO.Taking part in the seminar will also strengthen the social and intercultural competencies which are indispensable in leading a group; an experience that will be extremely useful in pursuing your future job or occupation. And the best part is that you will learn to lead by leading other participants from the seminar.

The seminar is based on the following educational principles:•Non-formal education – practical exercises and group work instead of lectures•Experience-based learning – we all have experience with leadership from our own lives; no-one is a clean slate/tabula rasa, and the seminar builds on this. Plus, we learn from what we do: learning-by-doing.•Active participation – you are expected to participate actively and share your experiences.•Fun – the seminar is going to be hard-working, playful, serious & fun - being among 50 like-minded participants from all around the world is never boring! The trainers are experienced in training, leading work camps, campaigns and other projects and are coming from all over the world.
