The figured world I will be observing is a television show called One Tree Hill. One Tree Hill is a television show that is about a small town in Wilmington, NC. The show is based around a few teenagers that grow up together starting in high school and then grow up and start families. There are nine seasons of this show and the first season opens with a bunch of teenagers in high school. Season nine, the final season, is showing all of the changes that have happened to these people throughout many years. There are so many places that occupy this show; there are individual houses, town businesses and basketball courts. There are 2 specific crowds in the television show; they include the jocks (and popular crowd) and the not popular crowd. I am observing the first season of One Tree Hill. This season is the beginning of high school for most of the characters. The main characters are freshman in high school and are making friends and developing futures. The rules and regulations for this series are normal community guidelines. For instance, bullying is not tolerated but still performed and love and lust are a huge part of the show. It is normal for the characters to talk at a normal voice and treat each other how people in the real world would treat people. It is acceptable for the characters to meet at casual hangout spots and gossip and talk about life. Things that would be inappropriate inside this show would be to disrespect elders, physically and emotionally harm another character, put down another character, and crude humor. This series is based on reality and is by no means a comedy. There are many discourse communities that are shown throughout this show and they include the different friend groups that associate with each other, the different couples that form, the families that are included, and the cheerleading and basketball team.

Artifacts: People, physical objects, emotions and ideas that pertain to a certain figured world and are significant in some way.

Basketball: Both Nathan and Lucas are very good at basketball and use it as a way to define themselves. Basketball is also used as a competition between the half brothers. Basketball is also a huge part of the school; everyone is involved in cheerleading or cheering on the players. The whole show is first based off of basketball and the basketball team.

Family: Nathan and Lucas Scott both have the same father. They did not grow up with each other and recently learned about the father they both shared. This starts a rivalry between the two Scotts.

Jealousy: Lucas gets asked to join the high school basketball team and Nathan sees this as a threat. Nathan gets jealous and tries many things to get back at Lucas. Nathan is jealous of Peyton and Lucas’s connection. Lucas is jealous of Haley tutoring Nathan.

Love: Nathan’s girlfriend Peyton is very appealing to Lucas and Lucas tries to flirt with her. Nathan gets very protective and tries to keep Lucas and Peyton away from each other. Nathan goes after Lucas’s best friend Haley as a way of revenge. Haley falls for Nathan and this is a big problem for Haley and Lucas’s relationship.

Actors:

Lucas – Lucas is the main character, Dan Scott’s second son out of wedlock. He lives with his mother Karen. He has no immediate father. He loves basketball and is part of the not-cool crowd in high school. Lucas has worked for everything he owns and helps out his single mother a lot.

Nathan- Nathan is popular at school and the best basketball player on the team. He runs the basketball court just like his father did years before. He is Dan Scott’s first son. He is a rich boy that gets whatever he wants whenever he wants it.

Page 3: Observation 1 Final

Keith – Lucas and Nathan’s uncle. Keith is Dan’s brother and tries to mediate any problems that involve Dan. Keith has a love interest in Karen (Lucas’s mother). Keith is like Lucas’s father he never had.

Dan- Nathan and Lucas’s biological father. Dan is an older version of Nathan. Dan has taught Nathan to think only of himself. Dan is the town’s only dealership owner and is very wealthy. Dan got Karen pregnant in high school and left her for another woman (Nathan’s mom).

Haley – Haley is Lucas’s best friend since they were nine years old. She has grown up with Lucas and is basically his sister he never had. Haley is Nathan’s tutor.

Peyton- Peyton is Nathan’s girlfriend at the beginning and slowly starts to break it off with him. Peyton has a love interest in Lucas. She is a cheerleader that does not belong behind pom-poms. She is very misunderstood.

Page 4: Observation 1 Final

Coach Whitey- Coach Whitey is the head coach of the basketball team. He is very kind-hearted and does what’s best for the team. He does not like how Nathan is a miniature Dan Scott and tries to put Nathan in his place.

Karen – Lucas’s mother and Keith’s love interest! Dan impregnated her and he left her to be a single mother. She has a certain hatred for Dan.

Discourse Communities: Lucas and Haley: They are best friends and they tell each other everything… well almost everything. A few people try to come between this relationship.

Lucas and Nathan: They are stepbrothers and have tension between them at the beginning of the show. They come together through the hatred of their shared father.

Nathan and Dan: Dan tries to control Nathan’s future. He also does not take any part in Lucas’s future even though he is his biological father.

Karen and Dan: Former lovers, Karen got pregnant and Dan left her right after high school.

Nathan and Haley: Nathan uses Haley to try to get to Lucas. He ends up actually liking her in the end of his prank.

Nathan and Peyton: Nathan dates Peyton for a really long time and has always treated her bad. She sets her eyes on Nathan’s stepbrother and they do not speak much after that.

Literacy Practices: A few literacy practices include talking face to face and through letters. Phones were not a big item in the early 2000’s so that was not used. Gossip was also a tool that people used.

Interview QuestionsTo Elena Mast, a peer that also enjoys and loves One Tree Hill1. Tell me how you feel about Nathan and Lucas’s rivalry in the beginning of the series..In the beginning of the series, I felt very confused because I didn’t know the background between Dan and Karen and Deb. I was also confused about why the rivalry existed. I didn’t realize that they on different sides of the school and it didn’t really click when i first started watching the show.

Page 9: Observation 1 Final

2. Whose side did you take when watching the rivalry between Lucas and Nathan and why? I chose Lucas’s side because I didn’t like Nathan always bullying him. I was also attracted to Lucas. Nathan was always rude to Lucas and I wouldn’t appreciate that happening to me.3. When the basketball game started in the first episode, who did you think was going to win and why? I thought that Nathan was going to win because he has all of the experience and he had coaches teaching him since he was young. I wanted Lucas to win but I didn’t know that Lucas’s skills were that high. It was really shocking to see the outcome.4. Who did you think Peyton would settle with in the end, Nathan or Lucas? And why? I thought that she was going to settle with Lucas because he was so sweet to her. Lucas always appreciated what Peyton did. Nathan treated her so badly and acted like he didn’t care for her at all most of the time.5. Who is your favorite character on One Tree hill and why? Brooke was my favorite character because she had so much confidence in herself. She had a side that no one understood or knew about until you got to know her. She was also so strong and I really enjoyed her personality.
