devi ls" (1Tim. 4:1).

JUST AS A CHILD REACHES for itsmother for help, so does maninstinctively reach toward God — especially during the trying moments inlife. In God he sees his Heavenly Father,

who wishes him well and who can evenperform the impossible. The Lord JesusChrist promised: "Ask and i t wi l l be given to you; seek, and ye shal l find ;

knock , and i t wi l l be opened unto you"

(Mat. 7:7). God answers him who asks

for something really necessary, like:strengthening of faith, learning how topray, attainment of the Holy Spirit, physical recovery, help in work,

improvement of family ties, children'swelfare, etc. God accepts pleas from all

who address Him with sincere faith andhope.

Besides the fact that prayer attractsGod's help to us, it is also remarkable inthat it assists in man's inner growth.

This is because prayer is not amonologue but a conversation in whichGod illuminates with the Holy Spirit thesoul of the one who prays to Him.Illuminating man's inner being, Godteaches him to seek not only that which

is material and temporal; but primarilythat which is everlasting and trulyprecious. Man, while conversing withGod in prayer, realizes that God is thehighest and mightiest Being, who mustbe worshipped with reverence and love, who may not be manipulated as someblind force. Thus, sincere prayers thatcome as a result of various deeply felt

personal needs, helps in the moralimprovement and inner growth of man

and leads him toward the highestblessing — the Kingdom of Heaven.

In full contrast to such steadfastdevotion, founded on faith andobedience to God, there emerges an

unhealthy "black spirituality" of theoccult. Here also there is an element of the supernatural and a search for help, but it is sought not from the Creator butfrom some dubious spirits or from somemysterious nonmaterial forces. If a

steadfast faith in God ennobles man, then an unhealthy faith in the occultcripples him spiritually. This unhealthyfaith is directed wholly toward all that isearthly, trivial, and sinful. The purposeof this preoccupation with the occult isstrictly utilitarian: to find out secrets, toattain worldly acclaim, to win someone'slove, to strengthen one's health, to draw

up bioenergy in order to enhance one'spotential, to take revenge on an enemy,

or simply to "play" with the mysterious. Many are drawn by the fact that all thisis attainable without any physical strainor the breaking of civil laws.

If turning to God awakens man's

conscience and rouses him torepentance and reform; occultknowledge, in contrast, does not bindhim with any moral obligations: just takeand enjoy! The main attraction for theoccult seems to be in the apparent

freedom from any moral obligations. Aswe shall see later, the spirits of thenether world are anything but unselfish, and sooner or later man will pay dearlyfor any services rendered by them. It isonly at first that everything seemsrewarding and easy.

Occultism is as old as mankind. InParadise the tasting of the forbidden

fruit was man's first attempt at receivingextraordinary knowledge and talents by

means of the occult (see Genesis ch. 3).Sorcerers, shamans, spiritualists, andso forth have always existed, althoughcovertly in most societies. Significantly, our era is witnessing a much increasedpopularization and passion for various

forms of the occult, confirmed by awhole series of serious contemporaryinvestigations. The booklets The Facts

on the Occul t and The Facts on Spir i t

Guides by John Ankerberg and JohnWeldon (Harvest House Publishers,Eugene, OR, 1991) gathered together information from many such studies inthe United States referred to and quotedhere and provide further details on someof the topics discussed below.

Thus, Mircea Eliade, a well-knownscholar, remarks in his book Occul t ism,

Witchcraf t and Cultural Fash ions : "As a

historian of religions, I cannot fail but beimpressed by the amazing popularity of

witchcraft in modern Western cultureand its subcultures. However, thecontemporary interest in witchcraft isonly part and parcel of a larger trend, namely, the vogue of the occult and theesoteric" (The University Press,

Chicago, 1976). Under the influence of the present day belief system known asthe "New Age," thousands of people inthe United States profess themselves tobe "channelers" (mediums) and"psychics." Millions turn to them for counsel and services while beingcaptivated by their writings. Some of these channelers are well known inartistic and entertainment circles. InEurope, Canada, Brazil, Russia, and

elsewhere, there is also a noticeableincrease in the interest in the nether-world. Occult ideas have even begun toinfiltrate serious sciences like

Page 8: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

psychology, medicine, philosophy, andarcheology. Pseudo-Christian sects

spread ancient occult ideas disguised inpseudoscientific and Christianterminology. The New Age sections inmany bookstores are larger than thosedevoted to Christianity.

Dr. Walter R. Martin, an eminent experton cults in America, confirms that atleast sixty percent of Americans observeoccult practices or profess an interest inthe occult in one form or another. Thereexist at least 3,000 occult books and

magazines, and even traditionalmagazines that, though having no realinterest in this area, nevertheless printarticles regarding occult ideas, astrological signs, curing by means of crystals, etc. In Russia as well, thepassion with the occult is taking onepidemic proportions. These sad factspoint to a socio-spiritual degeneration

and are an indication of the nearing of the Second Coming of Christ (1 Tim 4:1).

The word occul t ism is derived from theLatin "occul tus ," meaning somethinghidden and inaccessible to most. In thesphere of the occult are includedvarious unexplainable phenomena and

acts which set into motion mysteriousnon-physical forces. Preoccupation withthe occult strives for the followinggoals: 1) to acquire knowledgeinaccessible through normal physicalmeans, 2) to make contact with souls or

supernatural forces, and 3) to learn howto manipulate these spirits or forces. The following is a partial summary of occult teachings and occupations:fortune telling, astrology, chiromancy(palmistry), chimerology(hallucinations), theosophy (based onthe society of Elena Blavatskaya),kabbala, anthroposophy, spiritualism,

astral travels (also known as astralprojection or out-of-body travel), several

varieties of mysticism, transcendentalmeditation, mediumism or channeling, yoga, telesthetic (unconventional)healing, healing by biofeedback, ritualistic coding, shamanism, sorcery, and all forms of white and black magic.

Presently, great popularity is beinggained by the essentially occult NewAge movement, which has incorporatedinto itself many of the more ancientoccult teachings. In addition, a number

of contemporary sects and cults haveeither originated through the influenceof the spirits or carry within themselveselements of the occult and make use of occult practices. Among them we shouldcount: the Anthroposophical Society, the American Meditation Society, theBaha’i Faith, the Children of God (Familyof Love), Christian Science, the Church

Page 11: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons), theEckankar movement, the Universal

Society of Hare Krishnas, theRosicrucian Fellowship, the Self-Realization Fellowship, the SpiritualistsNational Movement, the TheosophicalSociety, the Transcendental Meditationmovement, the Unification Church, the

Vedanta Society, the Watchtower Society (Jehovah’s Witnesses), ZenBuddhism — to name just a few.

What motivates the enlightened peopleof the 20th century to turn toward such

unscientific and doubtful occupations asthe summoning of spirits? The answer isthat science and materialism alonecannot satisfy all the questions posedby modern man. Something in each of us thirsts and seeks after higher, spiritual answers to the principalquestions, such as: what do we live for?Are there other worlds and other more

Page 12: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

complex forms of existence? Whatawaits us after death? Are there

nonphysical forces which can help us toovercome the laws of physics and attainlasting happiness? And so people livingin ignorance or simply ignoringChristian teachings turn to the esoteric.

These esoteric cults claim that theyknow the answers to the fundamentalquestions of existence and can open thepaths to nonphysical forces. But their answers are false and the methodsdisastrous. The most frightening thing is

the fact that they smother the fear of God in man and the sense of responsibility for his acts. The fallenspirits joyously tell the novice occultistthat there is no judgment by God or everlasting torment, but on the contrary, that everything in the afterlife is easyand pleasant. So enrich yourself withknowledge and absorb the power given

you. Truly, sometimes as a result of occult practices a person may develop

unusual capabilities: telepathy, clairvoyance, the ability to heal by"biofeedback," the ability to moveobjects without touching them(telekinesis), etc. However, as we shallsee, these capabilities are not self-

developed in man, but come to himthrough the assistance of the uncleanspirits, and that is the reason they are somenacing and harmful. True, in order not to scare off a naive novice, demonscleverly conceal their presence andpresent themselves as harmless rovingspirits or as impersonal nonphysicalenergy, spread out in the cosmos or hidden within man himself. Now we shallexamine and answer these claims of the

occultists.

a) The nature of occult spirits

Communication with the spirits isrealized either through spiritualism or

through mediums. The history of invoking spirits (spiritualism) goes backto antiquity. It is mentioned in the Bibleas being a sinful practice forbidden byGod: "Regard not those who have famil iar spir i ts , neither seek after

w izards to be def i led by them : I am the Lord your God" (Lev. 19:31). "And the soul that turneth after such as have

fam i l iar sp ir i ts and after w izards to go a

who ring after them, I w il l even set My

face against that soul and w i l l cut him

of f f rom among his people" (Lev. 20:6)."A man also or woman who hath a

famil iar sp ir i t , o r who is a wizard, shall

su rely be pu t to death. They shal l stone

them w ith stones: thei r blood shal l be

upon them " (Lev. 20:27).

During a spiritualistic seance, the spiritemanates either in the form of a ghost or

through its reaction on various objects, such as by moving a plate, rapping on a

table, or moving a pointer (Ouija board). In mediumistic seances, the medium in astate of trance gives up his body to thecontrol of the spirit, which in turn entersthe individual, takes possession of hisorgans and performs through him

various actions and makes variouspredictions or revelations. The New Agein particular is popularizing this secondform of communication with the spirits(or "forces"), referring to it aschanneling (from "channel," to conductor guide). In some instances, as themedium (channeler) goes into a trance, his facial muscles and lips begin totwitch unwillingly. When the spirit totallypossesses the medium, the rhythm of

his respiration changes, as does hisfacial expression, to the extent that themedium sometimes becomes totallyunrecognizable. The voice changes as

well; for example, a feminine voice maybecome deep and masculine. Coming

out of the trance, the medium cannotremember what took place or what hesaid in his mediumistic state. At first thespirit cannot enter the medium withouthis consent, and it is necessary that themedium himself invite the spirit.

However, after repeated mediumisticseances, possession by the spirit canhappen involuntarily, in a spontaneousmanner, with the medium becomingsubject to the spirit.

It is obvious that among spiritualists andmediums there exist charlatans, although there also exist a great number who are quite accomplished and whotruly communicate with beings of thenether world and receive from theminformation and abilities unavailable toothers. A large number of ordinarychannelers and spiritualists are unaware

Page 17: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

how crafty and dangerous those beingsare in whom they place their confidence.

These are far from harmless, rovingspirits or impersonal forces of nature. On the contrary, there is consistentevidence from many accomplishedmediums and shamans that the spiritswith whom they deal consciously

attempt to deceive them. They pretendedto be benevolent in order to more easilypossess and harm them. Furthermore,as Satprem, a student of the occult andof the Hindu guru (teacher) SriAurobindo, wrote: "The spirits can takeany form they wish" (Satprem, Sri

Au robindo, or the Adventure of

Consc iousness, NY, Harper and Row,1974).

Robert Monroe vividly described anevent in which, during one of his "astral"travels, he was viciously attacked by twoevil spirits. At one point in the fray, he

Page 18: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

panicked and desperately attempted toremove himself from the torment. As he

looked at them, they instantaneouslyturned into the images of his twodaughters, attempting to throw him off balance emotionally in his fight againstthem. "The moment I realized the trick, the two no longer appeared to be my

daughters… However I got theimpression that they were both amused,as if there was nothing I could do toharm them. By this time I was sobbingfor help" (Journeys out of the Body, Garden City, NY, Anchor Books, 1973).

The noted medium EmanuelSwedenborg, who had dedicated himself to communication with spirits and whowas acclaimed by many as an expert inquestions regarding the occult, atteststo the fact that spirits with whomspiritualists and mediums deal are socunning and lying that it is impossible

Page 19: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

7/28/2019 Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/occult-what-the-eastern-orthodox-says 19/53

for anyone appealing to them toestablish their true personality and

intentions. These spirits are excellentactors masquerading under the guise of dead souls. Swedenborg warns noviceoccultists with the following words:"When the spirits begin to speak with aman, he ought to be aware that he

believes nothing whatever from them;for they say almost anything. Things arefabricated by them, and they lie … Theywould tell so many lies and indeed withsolemn affirmation … if a man listensand believes they press on, and deceive, and seduce in many ways .. Let menbeware therefore and not believe an iotaof what they say" (A Compend ium of the

Theological Wri tings of Emanuel

Swedenborg, NY, Swedenborg

Foundation, 1977).

We hear the same affirmation from UriGeller, known for his ability to twist

Page 20: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

spoons and knives by means of telepathy. He and his mentor,

parapsychologist Andrija Puharich, MD,often experienced uneasy feelings intheir dealings with spirits, noting asomewhat odd and suspicious behavior in themselves. Both occultists wereconvinced repeatedly that the spirits

conducted themselves ambiguously, asthough toying with them (AndrijaPuharich, Uri , NY, Bantam, 1975). Similar uneasy feelings have been experiencedby other accomplished spiritualists andmediums.

Consequently, if the spirits in touch withan occultist lie, is it not clear they arenot good angels and servants of God?Neither could they be souls of the dead, since, according to Sacred Scripture, souls are not allowed to roam the worldfreely? On the contrary, after a person'sdeath, God assigns his soul to a specific

Page 21: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

place, heaven or hell, in which the soulmust reside until the Great Judgment

Day: " And as i t is appointed  unto men once to die, bu t af ter this the judgment "(Heb. 9:27). Therefore, if the spirits of the occultists are not angels nor arethey the souls of the departed, then, asthe last alternative, they are spirits

subject to the one about whom theSavior said that "he is a l iar and the father of l ies " (John 8:44) — that is, of the Satan. It follows, therefore, thatspiritualists and channelers who rely onthe spirits of the nether world placethemselves and others in great danger (as will be explained later). It is difficultto understand how people who wouldnever trust a stranger so naively placethemselves under the control of nether

world beings, about whom they knownothing, and who are proffesional liars.

b) Is spiritual energy impersonal?

Let us now examine a second popular

opinion, that through some occultpractices one can activate thenonphysical energy which is either spread throughout the cosmos or ishidden in one’s self. This opinion is

especially enticing to the contemporaryskeptic, who acknowledges neither Godnor the spiritual world. He gets excitedthat through his wish alone he can put inmotion a powerful nonmaterial energyand force it to work for him. In

anticipation of the existence of impersonal nonphysical forces, therehas arisen a series of contemporaryoccult theories saturated with quasi-scientific terminology which are offeredto the reader in the form of practicalrecipes for all occasions in life.

The great success of these occult ideasis due to the fact that the people who are

Page 23: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

7/28/2019 Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/occult-what-the-eastern-orthodox-says 23/53

seeking are spiritually uneducated andyet seem somehow to discover a new

world: where everything that until thenwas mysterious and impossiblesuddenly becomes understandable andattainable. There is nothing to be afraidof and no one before whom to tremble — everything is simple and able to be

realized by him who has learned tomanipulate nonphysical forces.

Footnote: A special danger to spiritual health is represented by that school of the occult which advises a method for opening the fountain of energy within man himself. According to this teaching, every person, having adapted to himself a specific technique, can develop in himself great receptivity to the outer and inner world, to save and reestablish healthin himself and others, to learn how to be connected up to any information, to open the third eye, to perform astraltravels, to learn to unveil his chakras (a Sanskrit word relating to the energy centers of the human auric (atmospheric)field corresponding to the human endocrine system). Having opened the chakra with the help of special methods inorder to free psychic energies that offer boundless possibilities, the claim is that a person can be placed on a par withthe gods — possessing clairvoyance, telepathy, telekinesis, and so forth. Nevertheless, the masters themselves in thisfield warn that the opening of the bio-forces in oneself bears serious consequences. A detailed examination of this topicgoes beyond the scope of this article. We shall indicate only that people who are occupied in opening the chakras withinthemselves sometimes irreparably damage their psyche.

Curiously enough, the very spirits whichoperate "in the wings" of contemporaryquasi-scientific, occult experiments, are

never insulted by the fact thatchannelers ignore their labors andsilence their merits. On the contrary, thespirits willingly hide behind faceless

Page 24: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

7/28/2019 Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/occult-what-the-eastern-orthodox-says 24/53

nonphysical forces, since in this manner they can attain their primary goal:

enslavement. And they are verysuccessful in this, since their ownprince, the Devil, is a many faced anddeceptive demagogue. To a person withintellectual inquiries he says: "I shallgive you supernatural knowledge," and

to a person with mystical tendencies: "Ishall open up to you the mysteries of existence." To the person who thirsts for authority, he promises fame and power;to the person who is seeking worldlyhappiness, he promises all the blessingsof life; and to the unbeliever he shouts:"I don't exist. I am a fiction!"

Therefore, having enticed a person withwhat he treasures most, the Devil takeshim further and further from God, untilhe is dropped into the bottomless pit. Thanks to his ability to adapt himself tothe thoughts of a person, the Devil has

Page 25: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

7/28/2019 Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/occult-what-the-eastern-orthodox-says 25/53

been able to deceive modern man withancient, occult, fairy tales set in quasi-

scientific terminology. Thus, even in our time there has arisen a branch of science, parapsychology, which studiesand tries to scientifically explain theancient practices of shamans andmediums.

However, there remains the mainquestion: does there exist anonphysical, morally impersonal energy, and if so, what is its nature? In order toanswer these question, one must take

into consideration that any energy or force, either material or spiritual, isintimately related to its source whichgenerates it. Thus for instance, nophysical energy or field (electromagneticor gravitational, for example) exists "byitself" but emanates from definite atomicor subatomic particles. And since thesephysical particles are impersonal, the

Page 26: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

7/28/2019 Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/occult-what-the-eastern-orthodox-says 26/53

forces which emanate from them arealso impersonal and therefore are

morally neutral. Similarly, spiritualenergy and spiritual forces do not exist"on their own" but emanate fromspiritual beings. And since the spiritualbeings (angels, people, demons) areindividuals, the energy emanating from

them is, it follows, colored by their moralstate — good or bad. Experiencedpsychics understand this very well andtherefore try to guard themselvesagainst moral infection.

In the world we live there is black andwhite, and there are shades of gray, aswell; there is light and darkness, andthere is twilight, as well. However, inempty space there is no twilight, onlytotal light or total darkness. Similarly, inthe world of spirits there is no morallyundefined state. Spirits (in contrast topeople) are simple beings: they can be

Page 27: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

7/28/2019 Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/occult-what-the-eastern-orthodox-says 27/53

either totally good (angels), or totallyevil (demons). Accordingly, in the spirit

world there exist only two states:paradise or hell. There is nointermediate, neutral state. Havingunderstood this, we must agree that theforce (energy) emanating from God andthe angels is always benevolent and

draws toward good, but the force(energy) emanating from the demons isalways evil and pushes toward evil.Having two thousand years of spiritualexperience the Orthodox Church hasestablished this fact quiteunambiguously. The force emanatingfrom God, or rather "non-created Godlyenergy" (in the words of St. GregoryPalamas) enlightens and enlivens thesoul. " Lo rd, i t is good for us to be here"

cried the disciples, when on MountTabor the divine light enlightened them(Mt. 17:1-13).

Page 28: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

7/28/2019 Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/occult-what-the-eastern-orthodox-says 28/53

However, people are much morecomplicated than simple spirits (angels

and demons). That is why people canpass some of the time in a morallyundefined state and are capable of wavering between good and evil. Due tothe fact that in man there is a moraluncertainty and an inconsistency, the

good and evil in him most of the timeneutralize each other, leaving hisspiritual energy weak and ineffective incomparison to the energy of simplespirits. This is similar, for instance, tothe charge balance of a chemicalcompound that comes about from thesharing of electrons between positivelyand negatively charged molecules. Inthe spiritual world, there do not existany morally neutral, nonphysical forces,

because they always emanate frommorally definite beings, angels or demons. Therefore, every time a personcomes in contact with energy that is

Page 29: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

7/28/2019 Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/occult-what-the-eastern-orthodox-says 29/53

being exuded by these beings, he willexperience a pull either toward good or

evil.

Footnote: Of course, the fountainhead of all types of energy is God who is good. However, the fallen angels havepolluted the energy they have received, as well as all other gifts given to them by the Creator.

Consequently, the occultists aremistaken regarding the neutrality andsafety of the nonphysical force. Sinceneither God nor His angels allowthemselves to be manipulated, thedemons are the ones who come willingly

to the service of the occultists. Therefore, they dispense to theoccultists the needed energy. But theydo not do this unselfishly. On thecontrary, they loan their energy with the

purpose of receiving it back with a goodreturn. Sorcerers, witches, Satanists andmany accomplished occultists are wellaware of this but keep it in secret. Let us

examine some remarks from a fewspecialists.

Professor Michael Harner, has been avisiting professor at both ColumbiaUniversity and Yale who teachesanthropology at the New School for Social Research in New York. He

authored the book The Way o f the Shaman (NY, Bantam, 1986). Hisresearch in the field of occultismbrought him to the conviction that thebasic fountain of shaman energyemanates from the world of spirits.

"Without a guiding spirit it is virtuallyimpossible to be a shaman, for theshaman must have this strong, basicpower source …"

Hindu and Buddhist gurus (teachers)

acknowledge that their energy comesfrom the world of spirits. Indries Shahremarks, for example, that "Gurus ontheir own do not possess extraordinary

spiritual power. They receive it from thespirits. To the gurus solely belongs the

ability of concentration" (Oriental Magic,NY, E.P. Dutton, 1973). In the book The

Adventures into the Psychic , JessStearn, a long time investigator of parapsychological manifestations, makes the following observation:

"Almost without exception all of thegreat mediums … felt that they wereinstruments of a higher power whichflowed through them. They did notpresume to have the power themselves"(NY, Signet, 1982).

However much the occultists may wantto be praised for their overwhelmingcapabilities, they are neverthelessobliged to acknowledge that in realityspirits from the other side work throughthem. For instance, referring to theparapsychological investigation byLawrence LeShah, who studied a series

of Western and Eastern psychic healers,Charles Panati writes the following: "But

if the healers he studies had one thing incommon, it was that they all felt thatthey did not perform the healingthemselves; a 'spirit' did it workingthrough them. They felt they weremerely passive agents... All the healers

he studied slipped into altered states of consciousness in order to heal"(Supersenses , Garden City, NY,Anchor/Doubleday, 1976).

One of the most concise reports

regarding the question of psychichealing can be found in the collectioncalled Healers and the Healing Process .In a ten-year investigation in whichmany specialists participated, it wasfound that "Any study of healersimmediately brings the investigator faceto face with the concept that spiritintelligences (variously referred to as

guides, controls, or protectors) areworking through the minds of healers to

supply information of which the healer himself has no conscious knowledge"(Wheaton, IL, Theosophical Quest,

1977). This investigation also concludedthat abnormal healing is morewidespread in countries where

spiritualism and belief in spirits ispopular. Greater details on this topic canbe found in the handbooks The Facts on

the Occul t and The Facts  on  Spir i t Guides , published by John Ankerbergand John Weldon (Harvest HousePublishers, Eugene, Oregon, 1991).

Consequently it has been establishedthat regardless of the terminology used, occultists enter into contact with realfallen spirits who supply them withknowledge and nonphysical energy.

c) The fruits of occult practices

We have already discussed the

proposition that these spirits are neither angels nor the souls of the dead, but arerather demons. The consequencesbrought about through association withthese spirits will convincingly show

them to be demons. This is the most fail-safe method of investigating spiritapparitions, to which the Savior Himself pointed in saying: "Ye shall know them

by their frui ts. Do men gather grapes

from thorns , or f igs from this t les? Even

so , every good tree br ingeth for th good frui t , bu t a co rrup t tree br ingeth fo rth

evi l frui t" (Mat. 7:16-17). Here, then, themany cited facts from those whooccupied themselves with the occultconvinces us of the following: a) that thespirits prod people who deal with theminto all possible kinds of sins and

Page 35: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

crimes and b) that they damage their health and cripple their lives.

It is established that those involved inoccult activities sooner or later begin tomanifest psychic or psychologicalabnormalities; many fall into depressionor are driven to alcohol and narcotic

abuse. M. Lamar Keene spent thirteenyears among professional mediums. Inhis public confession he wrote that allthe mediums he knew, either personallyor through others, ended their livestragically. The Fox sisters, for example,

ended their lives as hopeless drunkards.William Slade, who was famous for reading minds, became mad and died ina Michigan insane asylum. The mediumMargery died as a hopeless drunkard.Wherever he looked, the same picturepresented itself: mediums invariablyended their pitiful existence with aneven more pitiful death. He was totally

crushed by the whole mediumisticsyndrome — by the deceit,

commonplace depravity, thoughtlessdrunkenness, and narcotic dependency (The Psychic Mafia ).

Besides all else, by disclosing their eviland sadistic nature, the spirits torture in

various ways those whom they help. They do this slyly, in order not tofrighten their prey ahead of time — slowly and shrewdly they increase thesuffering. A person practicing occultbegins to experience a higher state of

nervousness and physical indisposition, becomes subject to incomprehensibledamage and various unpleasantries, attimes experiencing unfounded terror, and begins to consider suicide. When hefinally realizes that it is the spirits whoare directing all these misfortunesagainst him, he attempts to rid himself of them and stop his occult activity. It is

Page 37: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

then that the spirits double their rageand smother him in a sea of greater

misfortunes in order to frighten him andforce him to return to them. Bytightening and loosening the reins, theygradually enslave the occultistcompletely and in the end destroy him.

This observation is substantiated by Dr.Nandor Fodor, the author of the well-documented Encyclopedia of Psych ic

Science : "Curiously enough, mediumism, if suppressed, will manifestin symptoms of disease … Once the

practices are accepted, the diseasedisappears" (Secaucus, NJ, Citadel, 74).The renowned psychic Edgar Cayce is aclear illustration of this. Joseph Millardwrites that in fact he was a pitifulmarionette of the forces of the other side(Edgar Cayce: Mys tery Man of Miracles ,Greenwich, CT, Faucett, 1967). An earlier medium, Raphael Gasson, wrote the

following from personal experience:"Many have suffered greatly because

they started investigating into this thing[mediumism], and have eventually beenbrought to distraction when they haveattempted to free themselves from it.Homes have been broken up, suicideand lunacy have afflicted those who

were once in it, and have dared to seekdeliverance from its power. Those whohave found that deliverance, give thanksto God for His grace and mercy" (The Challeng ing Coun terfei t , Plainfield, NJ,Logos, 1966).

Spiritist and guru Sri Chinmoy, aspiritual counselor at the UnitedNations, comments that many sorcerersand others having dealings with spiritswere strangled or otherwise killed. Hewas personally familiar with severalsuch occurrences (As tro logy , the Supernatural and Beyond, Jamaica, NY,

Angi Press, 1973). Professor Kurt Koch, who dedicated 45 years to the study of

abnormal apparitions, confirms thatamong those who occupy themselveswith the occult there exists a highpercent of suicides, tragic injuries andmadness. He and many other specialistsin the field of parapsychology affirm that

extended preoccupation with the occultinvariably ruins the physical well-beingof a person, as if a certain inner vampirewere sucking the strength of theoccultist.

People fall into the snares of the occultbecause they fail to see the danger. Atfirst everything seems pleasant andeasy. Malachi Martin in his bookHos tage to th e Devi l describes the fateof a certain "Carl," an accreditedpsychologist with a degree in physicsand a keen interest in religion andparapsychology. Carl amazed his friends

with his preternatural psychic abilities.Following his "calling," he seriously

studied teachings regardingreincarnation and astral travel.Progressively, as he comprehendedthese occult sciences, more and morehorizons were opened to him. Carl wasboth knowledgeable and careful. He was

convinced that his research would be of benefit to science and mankind. Havingreceived a professorship at aMidwestern university in the UnitedStates, he continued to experiment inthe area of parapsychological andmystic manifestations. However, heslowly began to notice some negativechanges in his character and mood.Later he began to be troubled by afeeling of distrust and even fear toward

the spirits with whom he wasinteracting. And so, Carl came to theconclusion that it was imperative tochange the fundamental method of his

research and to repudiate his originaltheses. At this time he became

paralyzed and, falling into an incoherentstate, he was taken to a hospital. After some eleven months of intensivetherapy and exorcism, accompanied byprayers from family and friends, Carlrecuperated. After leaving the hospital,

he renounced all that he had attained inthe area of parapsychology anddiscovered the mystery of his illness, that he had vaingloriously and freelygiven himself up to an evil spirit.Although the spirit came to him under the guise of perfecting him, and helpinghim to help others, he knew all the timethat in reality the spirit was evil.

Nevertheless, in spite of the fact that somany have suffered from their activitiesin the occult and that there are so manydocumented facts relating to the danger of occultism, a multitude of people

Page 42: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

7/28/2019 Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/occult-what-the-eastern-orthodox-says 42/53

continue to hold on to the myth that theoccult is inoffensive charlatanism or an

innocent pastime or even a positivespiritual quest. It is none of the three. The opinion that besides the"dangerous" form there exists a"benign" form of occultism is also false. Some hope that with proper precaution

one can derive some benefit from theoccult. Unfortunately, all data point tothe fact that in any form of occultactivity something negative anddestructive "adheres" to the person, from which he cannot rid himself without help from above. This beingfrom the nether world begins tomanipulate the person's fate and pusheshim deeper and deeper into the occultquagmire.

It's like the contraction of AIDS. Thisvirus, once it enters the system, "tricks"the healthy cells into believing that it is a

Page 43: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

7/28/2019 Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/occult-what-the-eastern-orthodox-says 43/53

"good" entity, so the cells let down their defenses and "accept" the invader. Only

when it is inside is the virus discoveredto be a "Trojan horse," an invadingparasite which begins the process of destroying its host. Of course, theinfected one can live a normal life for several years and may not even suspect

that his days are numbered. Only in thefinal stages of this illness does theexistence of this total destructionbecome evident. However, it is then toolate! The occult will kill spiritually just aseffectively as AIDS will kill physically.

There is another factor which, althoughextremely important, is not mentioned inthe scientific studies of the occult. It isthat which uncovers the viletheomachist ic (God-fighting) nature of occult spirits: an unexplainable aversionto God and all other holy thingsexperienced by a person after having

Page 44: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

7/28/2019 Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

received from the occultists any form of "help." To a person of faith, a sudden

change in his spiritual frame of mind isespecially perceptible. After he receiveshelp from either a practitioner of ESP or an occultist, he loses the desire to pray, read the Holy Scripture, go to Church, take Communion, seek the help and

advice of the clergy, and so on. Thisaversion is generally in proportion to theenergy received through occultmeasures. Repeated transactions withthe occult put a person in atheomachistic (God-fighting) frame of mind.

Prof. Koch tells of the following event. Ina certain Thai village there lived aChristian native who was an activemember of his Church. After hurting hishand, there developed on it a pus filledwound. In that tropical climate theinfection started to spread very quickly,

Page 45: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

7/28/2019 Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

and soon thereafter a part of the handbecame covered with a near black

lesion. However, since the nearestdoctor was quite far, this Christian triedto cure his hand with home remedies. Finally, when the gangrene reachedalmost to the shoulder, he went to thedoctor and was told amputation of the

hand was imperative; otherwise hewould die from the gangrene. In a panicthe Thai exclaimed, "What will I do withonly one hand? Who will do my plantingand gathering of rice?" Being seizedwith great agitation, he suddenlyremembered an old Hindu who treatedpeople with some kind of mysteriouspower. Even though he knew thatChristians should not turn to sorcerers, his desperate situation pushed him to

go to the Hindu for help. It seems thatthis Hindu was far from being acharlatan, and his magical powersaccomplished the impossible. The puss

filled inflammation was checked, and thehand was saved. Soon after receiving

help from the sorcerer, the villager stopped going to Church and returned tothe pagan faith of his ancestors. Thus, for his hand he paid with his soul(Occu lt Bondage and Del iverance, Kregel Publications, Grand Rapids, MI,

1970).

Further on, Prof. Koch states that themost powerful sorcerer that he ever metwas an Eskimo shaman, Alualuk. Hisoccult powers were so strong that he

even resurrected several dead pagans, one of whom lived another ten yearsafter his return to life. However, thissame shaman, having been enlightenedby a certain preacher, began to believein Christ and was baptized, after whichhe lost all his powers. When Kochbecame interested in the power withwhich he performed his miracles, the

Page 47: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

once-practicing shaman statedcategorically: "Demonic of course!"

adding that his power did not extend topracticing and believing Christians.

In our time the danger of occultparticipation has increased greatlybecause very often it presents itself as a

religious and even Christian activity.Traditionally, occultism has not coveredup its antichristian bent. Today, frompracticing psychics and other occultists, you can even hear suggestions such asto go and be baptized, spend some time

in church, receive Communion, anddrink some holy water. Some of thosepsychics even call upon the name of God during their seances, read prayers, and make the sign of the cross; thus, giving the impression that God's power works through them. This is all a terriblehoax! All forms of the occult, regardless

Page 48: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

of the cover up, remain, by their verynature, irreligious.

Truly, all the basic indications of theoccult present in contemporary,"Christianized" extrasensory seancesare that these are attempts tomanipulate the supernatural powers for

the sake of covetous gains. Religiondemands submission to the Creator, faith, repentance, moral improvement, aspiration toward heaven and a selflessservice toward good. In the occult, theobject is to absorb a "bright energy," to

achieve worldly success, to gainknowledge of mysteries, and so forth. All this is without moral obligations toGod. A person who is pursuing theoccult is not seeking Christ when hegoes to church, but a bioenergy. Whilegazing at the icons, he does not seeGod, but rather a fountain of nutrition. He selfishly stretches out his hands

Page 49: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

toward holy items in order to "recharge"himself for his unholy deeds, with which

to mock the greatness of the Creator. What do these psychics say aboutthemselves? Let us turn to thestatement of Uri Tarasov entitled "I am asorcerer of the fourth generation." In

answer to the question of acorrespondent who wrote, "I gatheredthat you performed sorcery over apatient with [a bone disease] with thehelp of your biofeedback, manualtherapeutics, and psychotherapy. This is

well known. We are acquainted withsome representatives of holisticmedicine. Are you one of thesecharacters? Then whence is thesorcery?" Tarasov replied, "The answer is in your question. Why do I not callmyself a psychic? Because a psychicachieves primarily a tenth of what amediocre slight-of-hand sorcerer has

Page 50: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

mastered. The same can be said of hypnotists, warlocks, psychotherapists.

Each of these capabilities… is only thetip of the iceberg." This was said withthe utmost frankness. This is the "tip of the iceberg" whose foundationdescends into the nether regions.

Because of its the God-fighting nature,Sacred Scripture strictly forbidsparticipation in all occult practices. Wepresent here a few examples. "There shall not be found among you any one

who maketh his son or h is daughter to

pass through the fi re, or who useth div inat ion , or an observer of t imes, or an

enchanter, or a w itch , or a charmer, or a

consul ter w ith fam i l iar sp ir i ts, or a

w izard, or a necromancer. For al l who do

these th ings are an abom inat ion un to

the LORD, and because of these

abom inat ions the LORD thy God do th

dr ive them ou t from before thee. Thou

Page 51: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

shal t be perfect w ith the LORD thy God "

(Deut. 18:10-13). "If there arise among

you a prophet or a dreamer of d reams,and g iveth thee a sign o r a wonder, and

the sign o r the wonder com e to pass

whereof he spoke un to thee, saying , `Let us go af ter other gods which thou hast

no t known, and let us serve them ,' thou

shal t not hearken unto the words o f that prophet or that dreamer of dreams; for

the LORD you r God is proving you to

know whether ye love the LORD you r

God w ith al l your hear t and with al l your

soul. . . that pro phet or th at dreamer of

dreams shal l be pu t to death, because

he hath spoken to turn you away from

the LORD your God" (Deut. 13:1-5).

Therefore, while a healthy religious lifeenlightens and morally ennobles one, unhealthy pseudo-religious occultactivity morally cripples and destroyshim. All forms of the occult without fail

Page 52: Occult what the Eastern Orthodox says

lead to interaction with fallen souls.Even though at first these occupations

bring success in one's affairs and createan impression that they open before oneunlimited possibilities, in the finalsummation, one has to pay dearly for favors received from fallen souls. "For what is a man pro f i ted, if he shal l gain

the whole wo r ld and lose his own sou l? Or what shal l a man g ive in exchange for

h is sou l?" (Mt. 16:26).
