• ALL electronics are NOT PERMITTED in school. – We understand that some of you have a long commute

and use those items during your ride; you may continue to do so.

• If you bring any electronics into school, you are required upon entry to place them in your boxes.

– They will be returned to you at the end of the day. – During Student Lounge you may sign out your

electronics during lunch for 15 Makos.

• If any electronics are seen during school hours, they will be taken away from you and your parents/ guardian will have to come to pick it up.

• Students are to remain on their buses until staff opens the doors and waves them in.

• Students are greeted at the door by Mr. Carfagno and given makos for saying “good morning”

• Students then enter the building where they are to turn in any electronics. Each student has a box labeled with their name for their property. *The boxes are locked in a room to ensure security and safety of student property*.

• Students will leave their backpack, pocketbook, or any bag they may have brought in, the bags are checked by staff and any items that are not allowed in class are removed and put in their box.

• Students are then checked by staff for any items in their pockets. Female students are checked by a female staff member and male students are checked by a male staff member.

• Students then walk through a metal detector and then met by another staff member, who uses a metal detecting wand.

• Students then may proceed to get breakfast and sit at a table and eat.

• The cafeteria has rectangular tables with separate chairs.

• There is a red chair at each table, this chair is for staff only.

• Students will occupy the blue chairs.

• If there are students at a table, there should be a staff member sitting there as well.

• Breakfast is in the lunch room. You will only have 10 MINUTES to eat.

• Outside food is not allowed, unless

you have a doctors note and approval from Ms. Lisa.

• Juice, milk, breakfast bars, and cereal will be provided.

• The Tide Pool is our shark store. It will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 1:30pm.

• You may use your earned makos to purchase items. The makos must only be from that day. If you do not have enough then try to earn more for another time.

• The Tide Pool is different from School Account which you will also be earning makos for. It will be your responsibility to decide if you want to use your makos in the Tide Pool or save them in your school store account. – If you have earned 130 makos for the day, which earns

you $1.00 in your school store account.. – If you choose to purchase a t-shirt for 25 makos then

your daily amount goes down to 105 and now you will only earn $.75 for the day in your school store account.

• In order to shop, students must:– Attend & participate in all their academic classes.– Following the SHARK behavior expectations. – Earn a minimum of 110 makos.

• All items purchased in The Tide Pool will be placed in a brown paper bag with their name on it and it will be waiting at the dismissal table.

• Suggestion Box - Students can request items that are under $5.00 that they would like carried in the Tide Pool. The suggestion box is located in the Tide Pool.

• Student may charge their electronics for 5 makos.

• Before the Winter Recess & at the end of the school year, students can either get a Wal-Mart gift card or if eligible participate in a privilege shopping trip to Wal-Mart.

• Students have the option to sell items they no longer want in the Tide Pool under Consignment.

• The item must:– Be in working condition – Include all the essential accessories– Be able to fit in your backpack.

• Students will research the item they are interested in selling to find an appropriate price. Students can complete the Consignment Form and receive assistance on Mondays during Math Class with Ms. Gordon or during Mrs. LaRosa’s classes.

• Students will be required to get the Consignment Form signed by a parent or guardian.

• Counselors will be contacting the parent or guardian to confirm that they have approved this transaction.

• Detailed explanation of pricing. – The item will start selling at the starting price as you

and your Parent/Guardian have indicated on the Consignment Form.

– If the item does not sell within 30 days at the starting price, the price will be reduced.

– At 60 days the item will be reduced to the lowest price as indicated on the Consignment Form.

– If the item does not sell after 90 days, the item will be returned to the student after your counselor calls and speaks to your Parent/Guardian to notify them of the return of the unsold item.

– When the item sells the student will receive 90% of the selling price in their School Account (formerly known as their Wal-mart Account). The Tide Pool receives a 10% commission fee.

• Any items in the Tide Pool that costs more than $5.00 can be purchased by the students will have to use the “real” money they earn and have accumulated in their School Accounts (formerly known as your Wal-Mart Account).

• Students that want specific items may place an order by completing The Tide Pool Order Form.– Students must research the best price available to

purchase their item, including item price, sales tax and shipping.

– Students must include the website (ex. Target, Wal-Mart /Amazon), as well as a print out the item on from the website and it must include a picture.

– Mrs. LaRosa must approve the form.– The form is to be taken home and signed by a

Parent/Guardian including a contact number.

• Once the form has been signed and returned to the school, Mrs. LaRosa will order the item.

• Students will be notified when their item(s) are in. They can come to the Tide Pool when it’s open to purchase their item(s).

• Students must write a check to pay for the item.

• Mrs. LaRosa will keep a record of what each student has in their account.

• A receipt will be written out and for the high school classes, they will be using their Monday Math class to reconcile their accounts.

• In order to participate, students must:– Have enough money in their School Accounts.– Attend & participate in all their academic classes.– Earn at least 110 Makos each day for the previous five

days. – Must not have any issues regarding behavior that staff

deems serious enough to remove them. – Not have any dietary issues that would prevent them

from participating.

• On Monday, students will vote on the restaurant.

• On Wednesday, students will place their order according to a predetermined menu.

• On Friday, as long as students have maintained the appropriate SHARK behavior to participate, their order will be placed that morning.

• This privilege will only be allowed once a month.

• Every Friday there will be a special theme.

• Students who choose to participate will receive extra Makos for school spirit.

• Forms will be send home on Thursday reminding you of them theme. The themes will also be placed on the Ocean Academy website.

• Students can make recommendations for Friday Themes by submitting them to Mrs. LaRosa.

• Examples of previous Friday Themes: Crazy Sock Day, Hat Day, Masquerade Day, Favorite Character Day and Pajama Day.

• You must earn enough Mako Money to be able to leave the building for PE, student lounge, and any other activities. However, you can choose when and where to use your Mako Money.

– If you want to be able to leave the building to attend the Physical Education program at the YMCA, you need to have earned 75 Makos prior to leaving.

– If you would like to participate in Privilege Friday then you need to have earned 90 Makos and pay 15 towards your chosen privilege.

• Completed Academics: 10 Makos per class for completed academics to be given by the Teacher.

• Homework: 3 Makos, to be given by the Teacher.• Culinary & Gym: 30 Makos given by the Teacher & Aides for full

participation. 15 Makos for staying back and completing the Gym packet.

• Rewarding Good Behaviors: 1 Mako will be handed out at a time by the Aides. For classes with more than one aide: designate one aide per class to hand out the Makos, this may help even out for the classes with only one aide.

• Routine Daily Jobs: 5 Makos (setting up classroom tables)• Counselors: This will be dealt with on an individual basis. • Midmorning Count: Make sure the midmorning count is written on your

Mako Count Sheet. This way if a student refuses or “forgets” to complete his final count at the end of the day, rather than getting a zero for the day, the student will get their midmorning count.

• Spontaneity of rewarding good behavior will still continue.• Working as a Cashier in the School Store: up to 10 Makos based

on performance.

• The Mako money will now have values of $1, $5, and $10. They will be labeled as such and have different color sharks for each value.

• The colors will change every other

marking period. • This is being done to eliminate wasted

paper as well as enable Tide Pool shopping.

• The lounge is for students who have earned 90 Makos and have maintained the appropriate SHARK behavior throughout the day.

• Participation requires students to pay 15 Makos.• Student may check out their electronics by

completing the Student Lounge Electronics Checkout Form, as well use the computers in the classroom and the Wii. – Sorry student laptops are no longer available for

use during student lounge.• Students must return their electronics to the Tide

Pool by 12:30pm. • No shooting games are allowed and only approved

Wii games can be played.

• The Shark of the Month Committee will meet once a month with Mr. Carfagno, a counselor, and teacher.

• The committee will be reviewing incentives and program changes.

• The Shark of the Month should discuss with their class any problems or changes they feel should be implemented.

• The student will then report back to the class about the meeting and any changes that will take place.

• The meeting will take place on the last Friday of the month.

• You will now have the opportunity to earn yourself 7 dog tags based on following the matrix: The 6 “Core Principles” and “Ocean Academy”.

• Earnings are based on a Level 3 or 4.– “Safe,” the First Dog Tag can be achieved by

earning a level 3 or 4 for five consecutive days. – “Happy, Alert, Responsible, Kind, &

Sensible” the next five Dog Tags - can be achieved by earning level 3 or 4 for ten consecutive days. • Every two weeks of level 3 or 4 will earn you one of

the five dog tags.– “Ocean Academy” The final dog tag can be

achieved by earning level 3 or 4 for fifteen consecutive days.

• If you have a bad day, you are able to bank up to 5 days upon the Principals approval.– Students must write a letter to the Principal requesting the ability

to bank their days and explain their actions.– Your parent/guardian will be made aware of the situation.

– Students are eligible for a Group reward such as going out to lunch, bowling, going to the movies or have a visit from the game truck along with the staff of the month.

• Students will be assigned during one Language Arts class of each month to choose and nominate any staff member who they think best recognizes the S.H.A.R.K.S core values.

• Students will write a minimum of three paragraphs explaining why the staff member they chose should be “Staff of the Month”. Your paragraphs must include how that staff member was “Safe, Happy, Alert, Respectful, Kind, & Sensible”.

• The cafeteria will continue to be used as a classroom as well as the lunchroom.

• Students will not be able to sit in the cafeteria when they can not be in class.

• Students that cannot be in class for a particular reason will have to use the tank, their counselor, or go outside to regroup in order to return to class.

• Culinary Class will be taught by Miss Jess. Students will be attending culinary class once a week. They will be learning about the proper use of kitchen equipment, different cooking skills, nutrition, and working together with peers to create recipes. Students will learn what responsibilities come along with working in a kitchen such as preparation, following recipes, and cleaning the equipment and kitchen after use.

• Culinary classes will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
