Arc ACTION Ocotber 2013 Blair County year evening of fun, friendship and foolery. There is no cost to attend for Arc members and only $5 for non-members. Please note the earlier end time than most dances (9:30 p.m.) and inform rides of the adjusted time. The Arc could use some extra cookies or fall-themed baked goods to serve for dessert. If you are in a baking mood, please bring a tray of goodies to share. ZUMBA BABY One of the most popular classes at gyms is Zumba. Zumba is a fun dance style inspired by various forms of Latin American dance. It is performed primarily to Latin American dance music in an upbeat free-style form of dance. The Arc is very fortunate to be able and offer this class for a one-night demonstration on Monday, October 7, from 7 pm to 8 pm. Instructor Tasha Marasco teaches Zumba at Pro Care Fitness and also at the Sheetz Distribution Center in Claysburg. She is very much sought after, but has graciously agreed to introduce Zumba to The Arc. This class is open to the public so feel free to invite friends and neighbors. It is designed to be fun and energetic. A key focus of The Arc is to promote individual health and wellness. The Arc offers nutritional cooking classes, an organic vegetable garden and several forms of exercise each week. Studies show that exercise assists mental health, controls weight and is a vital component to offset cardiovascular disease. Please stop by on October 7 and set your endorphins to overdrive! Christmas Card Making Who doesn't love to receive a card? Cards make us feel special and loved. Giving cards can also instill a sense of warmth, knowing we made someone else happy. This holiday season, why not send a card that has your personal fingerprint all over it? Design your very own personalized 3-D card. Sarah Wilt is returning to teach her creative concept of layering cutouts for one-of-a-kind homemade cards. It has been a few years since The Arc offered this class. The first and only time it was offered, registration filled quickly. Do not hesitate to register if you think this class is something you would like to be a part of. The date is Sunday, November 3, from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. There are only 15 spots open for this class so hurry and register. The class is being held early to give students plenty of time to make many more cards at home before the Christmas mail rush. If time permits, students will have the opportunity to either make a 2 nd Sarah Wilt card or a holiday water color card. Halloween Party The nights are getting colder, the days are getting shorter, so it can only mean one thing – it is time for The Arc's Annual Halloween Costume Party!! Phone calls are already coming into The Arc requesting the date for the dance, which must mean people are already planning their costumes for the anticipated parade of costumes. Everyone is invited to take part in the parade and show off your creative designs. Prizes will be awarded for best home-made costume, most creative costume, most colorful costume and best couple theme. The date of the extravaganza is Saturday, October 26, from 7 pm until 9:30 pm. Doors won't open until 6:50 so please don't arrive too early and be stuck waiting outside. It wouldn't be an Arc party without music to dance to, selected from today's most popular hits, plenty of food, and a 'spook'tacularly decorated hall. So, grab your friends and begin planning your costumes for a once-of-

Thank You Isn’t Enough... The Arc of Blair County is extremely blessed. We are surrounded by agencies, businesses and citizens who are invested in The Arc and care what happens to people who have developmental disabilities. One of the great supporters of The Arc of Blair County is the Altoona Sunrise Rotary. Without the support of the Altoona Sunrise Rotary, families would not benefit from advocacy services and assistance with school plans; recreational activities and bus trips would be a thing of the past; conferences for individuals and families would not exist; and social gatherings would be eliminated. The huge amount of support offered by the Sunrise Rotary on your behalf does not happen without many hours of work and long days. Cheers and applause to the golf committee: Joe Raia (fundraising chair), Steve Dalecki (co-chair), Randy Diviney (co-chair), Paul Cooney, Ed Dobson, Dale Gormley, Kathy Hileman, Chris Kirwin, Steve McCullough, Colleen Montrella, Dave Montrella, Chris Reighard, Mac Rosenbaum, Helen Sickle, Susanna Tomlinson, Mike Weise, Frank Wiley and Joe Zerbee.

Arc volunteers come out and lend a hand wherever needed, giving up their entire day for the good of The Arc. Hugs to: Kathy Chabala, Karen Claton, Molly Cyman, Amy Cyman, Connie Traficante, Rick Mitchell, Colleen Weise, Connor Brandt and Jonah Brandt. Of course, the leader behind all the kitchen work and orchestrating the connection between Sunrise Rotary and The Arc is Dave and Colleen Montrella. mmmwwaaa!

It is the sponsorships which really drive the golf tournament. Words will not express how grateful The Arc is for their support. Please, please, please support the following businesses who do so much for The Arc and keeps our community thriving: Sheetz, Inc., Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, 84 Lumber, Pepsi, M&T Bank, BBI, Brenner Enterprises, E.B. Endress, ARM Enertech Associates, Highland Tank, Reliance Bank, Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, Lee Industries, S&T Bank, David and Colleen Montrella, Keller Engineers (who is also a member of The Arc), Altoona Pipe and Steel (another Arc member), American Legion of Hollidaysburg, ARC Federal

Credit Union, Blair Companies, Carnegie Equipment, Groundwater Environmental Services, McGee Corporation, Mountain Research, New Pig Corporation, Penn State Altoona, Blue Knob Auto, Re/Max Results Realty Group, ServPro, MVI Field Services, and the many Tee/Green sponsors, in-kind contributors and donors. There would not be a golf tournament without the golfers and so we graciously thank each and every company, group, team or individual who supported the 18th annual Becky Sheetz Memorial Golf Tournament.

Cooking Class The cooking class was a hands-on program. Students used knives to core tomatoes, used the backside of a large blade to break garlic, minced vegetables and created their very own zucchini boats for dinner. The menu consisted of homemade tomato soup (tomatoes cut by students), zucchini stuffed with fresh herbs, slices of mozzarella

model at the National Institute of Health outside of Washington, D.C, has multiple disabilities, and did not have a long life expectancy. Nancy worked with her daughter & refused to believe her daughter could not do things other children were doing. She taught her to crawl on her belly to get to the laundry room, instructed her on how to do laundry, cook and learn other independent living skills. Nancy improvised and built a home-made mechanism that would allow her daughter to experience the thrill of roller skating as she held her daughters legs on her hands and knees round the rink. She was adamant her daughter’s disability would not prevent her from leading a typical life. Today, Megan is married and through surrogate is the mother of twin daughters. Megan continues to struggle and is in pain, remembers the stares and rejection from others, and yet persevered to achieve her dream of living life to the fullest. Way to go!!
