I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

“Bread of Heaven” | Exodus 16:2-15
WELCOME | We are glad you chose to worship with us today! Please enjoy some coffee and refreshments in the Stars Cafe before the service begins. During the service, you will have a chance to respond to the message using your Connection Card. Please complete the card and return it to us in the baskets at the rear of the Worship Center. For our first-time guests, we have a special gift available for you as you leave the Worship Center.
CURRENT MESSAGE SERIES: “Exodus: The Story of Redemption” | The book of Exodus is a wonderful story of God’s redemption of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and the establishment of a covenant relationship. This story demonstrates God’s awareness of the Israelites’ problem, God’s love for the Israelites, and God’s provision for a better future. But the story of Exodus is not just a history lesson, but also an illustration of the way God still works in our lives today. There are still those things that hold us captive in our life today, yet God wants to redeem us and set us free. In this series, we explore the type of redemption God brings to the Israelites and to us.
CELEBRATION OF COMMUNION | Today, we celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion. Communion is a time we remember the sacrifice of Jesus’ death on the cross and celebrate the grace of God working in our lives today. We believe this sacrament is “an outward and visible sign and inward and spiritual grace.” An invitation with instructions will be given by the pastor following the message. We practice “open communion” and welcome all those who love Christ, repent of their sin, and seek to live in peace with one another. You do not need to be United Methodist or a member of Bethlehem First UMC to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

and Lutherans will join us in the 500 year anniversary of the Reformation. We hope you will join
us for this special worship service.
What is the Reformation? The Reformation, also referred to as the Protestant Reformation, was
a schism from the Roman Catholic Church initiated by Martin Luther and continued by John
Calvin, It is usually considered to have started with the publication of the Ninety-five Theses by
Luther in 1517.
Luther began by criticizing the sale of indulgences, insisting that the Pope had no authority
over purgatory and that the Catholic doctrine of the merits of the saints had no foundation in
the Bible. The Protestant position, however, would come to incorporate doctrinal changes such
as a complete reliance on Scripture as a source of religious authority and the belief that faith in
Jesus, and not good works, is the only way to obtain God's pardon for sin.

Interfaith Hospitality Network of Athens
IHN of Athens opened its doors October 31, 2004, with the support of congregations from many different faith groups. They are able to provide shelter, meals, and compassionate assistance for up to three families (or maximum of 14 people) in crisis situations. As a group the families rotate from church to church on a weekly basis. By uniting congregations through their Day Center, and the support of social service agencies, the IHN program can assist the families in finding sustainable housing, job training, employment, or whatever needs they may have.
Volunteering is a great way to help the community and support those in need. Opportunities include: Setting up rooms, cooking meals, staying overnight with guests, driving the van, etc. Training will be held at BFUMC on Thursday, October 19, at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, October 21, at 9:00 a.m. Say Yes to IHN!!

CALL TO WORSHIP Rev. Frank Bernat Around the world people gather to break bread and pour wine We gather with them in heart and mind. Around the world the broken body is made whole. As part of that body we join in its unity. Around the world the Banquet of God is prepared for the table. We, who share in the banquet, come eagerly to be fed. Let us worship together and share God’s bounty. Let us sing, rejoice and pray together in God’s love.
INVOCATION Rev. Bernat
O God , we join with our brothers and sisters around the world in remembering Christ’s sacrifice for us. For the opportunity to eat and drink together and for the life we have received, we give you thanks and praise. In the abundance of your many gifts, grant us grace to fill one another’s lives with love. Redeem, restore and remold us until we are made new.
