LAKEWOOD — This week we returned to Cal Bowl for our second trip here this season. The staff was very helpful getting team rosters in-put on the correct lanes.

Leading the scoring today was Dee Phipps with a 535 se-ries. Other ladies who scored well were Bernice Bennett with a 517 series, Melba Knight-516, Ella Wilson-508/202, Ora McCormick -503 and Ashlee McKinney-202.

Conditions at Cal Bowl proved challenging enough to produce a change in leader position. At first place is Cal Bowl 1 with 17 wins upset-ting Westminister 2 at 15 wins, who had been league leader for several weeks. Cal Bowl 2 is tied for second with 15 wins. Teams moving ahead in standings are Keystone 1 with 13.5 wins, Westminister 1 with 13, and three teams with 12 wins. Remaining teams are clustered from 11.5 to 7 wins. With teams so tightly grouped, each week see many standing changes.

We were very happy to have Barbara Bishop with us this week. She took care of the brackets, distributing league sheets, 50/50 tickets and league envelops. She was a big help and we really appre-ciate having her back with the league. We also welcomed Jes-se Banando’s return to bowling after her recent surgery.

Chapter 3The Stance

A proper stance is important because it aims your shot. It also sets up a consistent and effective delivery, ensures effortless transition to the next skill, and positions you to walk correctly, even though a very heavy weight is swinging from one side of your torso. Most importantly, this stance puts your ball directly on the target line! A bad stance does none of this.

Okay, let’s get started. You have stepped up onto the approach, have picked your ball up from the return, and are standing on your normal spot.

Technique

Look down and note 1. exactly where your feet are positioned.

Visualize the line your ball will travel, noting which arrow this line passes over.2.

Face that arrow (it is your target). 3.

Stand erect.4.

Insert your fingers into the ball as tightly as possible, and then stretch your hand around 5. the ball until the thumb slides easily into place.

Take a deep breath, 6. relax, and focus on the following elements.

Shift all your weight to one foot; use the other foot for balance only.7.

Dip your shoulder 8. straight down as far as it will comfortably go. Do not force it!

Anchor your elbow to your side.9.

Aim your forearm directly at your target. 10.

Rotate your wrist to position your hand under the ball, but continue to support it with 11. both hands!

Tip: Of the four basic skills, the stance has the most elements. It may take a while for you to become comfortable with it. Practice it at home, in front of a mirror. It won’t cost you a dime, and the results will be worth it! Training yourself at home will allow you to reduce the number of ele-ments you need in your checklist once you hit the lanes.

DiscussionAs you can see, the stance is composed of eleven elements. It is the most complicated of the basic

skills. No kidding! The SPARE system is so easy that the most complicated thing you’re going to have to learn is how to stand still properly! The following comments explain why every single one of these elements is vital.

Position your feet1. . For any of your skills to be useful, they must be repeatable. The lanes approach is designed as it is for this very reason: to allow you to make the precise location of your stance repeatable.

A bowling alley is forty inches wide and consists of thirty-nine “boards” side by side. The boards that make up the approach are lined up with the boards of the lane. Markers in the form of dots are built into the approach area so that you can easily note exactly which boards you have put your feet on. These dots line up with the arrows you will see about fifteen feet beyond the foul line. These arrows are the targets you will aim for because they are closer than the pins.

The line your ball travels is determined by two specific points: your starting position and the arrow, or other target that you aim for. Obviously, changing either of these points alters this line. Starting at a particular spot and then delivering your ball so that it rolls over a specific target will result in a strike. To repeat the process, you must continue to start at that exact spot and roll your ball over the same target! It’s really just that easy to understand.

Tip: Changing where you stand is the most common adjustment bowlers need to make as lane conditions change. Keep things simple: alter your starting position while aiming for the same target on the lane. Moving your stance to the left brings the ball to the right of the pins; moving your stance to the right brings the ball to the left side of the pins. This is how you zero in on the pocket - by moving the position of your stance one board at a time. This concept is also used for making spares.

Tip: Since precision is so important to any skill, it is helpful to draw a line on the toe of the weight-bearing shoe. This line will allow you to quickly position your stance in exactly the same spot time after time. A dot will suffice, but a line also gives you a sense of direction.

Visualize your line 2. This element establishes your target line. It is what practice shots (also

known as “shadow balls”) are for, so that you can see how your ball will “track” once competition begins. Learning to visualize this line is a huge step forward for any bowler. It develops and strength-ens your mental game. It takes your mind off distractions and puts your focus where it belongs: on your technique! This element becomes easier with practice.

Stand erect. 3. An upright stance allows you to be smooth and relaxed at the beginning of your approach. It also helps prevent “rushing the foul line.”

The sports of track and field and scuba diving teach that the feet follow the head. To run faster,

lean forward. To dive, point your head down. Applied to bowling, crouching over in your stance leads to the head getting in front of the feet. The feet will just naturally try to catch up and cause you to rush the shot. You will feel that your timing is off. This is a common symptom of being tired and is easily cured by simply standing up straighter in your stance.

4. Face the target. This element is invaluable because it aims you. It determines the proper direc-tion of your delivery by “squaring” your shoulders to the target. Doing this every time squares you to the target every time! This component of the stance helps ensure consistent accuracy.

5. Gripping the ball. You cannot deliver consistent shots without a secure grip on the ball. Noth-ing will destroy your concentration faster than feeling the ball start to slip off your hand prematurely. Two things determine the security of your grip: fit and friction.

Good fit comes from having a ball custom drilled specifically for you by people who know what they’re doing. Have this done by a qualified professional, ideally at the bowling center at which you compete. Please note: A ball that fits poorly may cause blisters! These can quickly rupture, begin to bleed, and lead to infection. You do not want that!

Friction is a different matter altogether. It changes for reasons too numerous to deal with here. Suffice it to say, keep your hands dry by judicious use of a cotton towel and always have a rosin bag handy. (Blowing gently into the thumb hole can help too!)

Assuming fit and friction is not an issue, it is time to address technique once more. It is imperative that you develop a consistent routine when you are up on the approach. You must learn to put your hand into the ball the same way each and every time! This helps to ensure that the hand comes out of the ball the same way each and every time! This is an example of how the stance enhances other skills. The grip created here enhances the certainty of a reliable release later.

Start by placing your fingers into the ball as deeply and as tightly as possible. Why? Again, it’s about being consistent. Tight fingers = consistent release; loose fingers = inconsistent release. Simple! The next step is to stretch your hand around the ball until the thumb can easily be inserted into the thumb hole. If necessary, test your grip by hanging the ball at your side and swinging it back and forth a few times to make sure it doesn’t slip. If it does, dry your hand with a towel, apply some rosin, and start over!

Tip: Never leave your thumb inside the ball while waiting for someone else to bowl. It quickly begins to perspire. Excessive moisture acts as a lubricant and will compromise your grip!

6. Take a deep breath. At this point, you have completed the preliminaries of your stance. You are positioned. Now you must set up your delivery. Taking a deep breath at this point relaxes your body. Tension causes bad shots: it’s called “choking!” With tension gone and nerves under control, it is easier to focus on what you need to do next. One deep breath - it may seem unimportant, but it makes a big difference!

7. Put your weight on one foot (the right foot for right-handed bowlers; the left foot for left-handed bowlers). This element of your stance is a consistency insurance policy! It guarantees that you will always take your first step with the same foot! Try it. Put all your weight on one foot, lean forward, and see which foot moves first automatically, without you even thinking about it! You would not believe how important this can be when your concentration is blown because you need one more strike for your first 300 game. It is one less thing that you have to worry about.

This “one-footed” stance also helps you to walk straighter during your delivery, making certain

that the ball stays on its line! Here’s how. If your weight is distributed on both feet, your first step requires that you shift part of your weight sideways to one foot or the other. Sideways movement is off-line movement. Remember, the efficient and effective delivery gets the ball on line and keeps it there (Does absolute truth #3 ring a bell?)!

Note: This “one-footed” stance creates a three or five-step approach. If you use a four-step approach

and prefer not to modify your technique, ignore this element. Instead, concentrate on keeping your feet close together. If you are just taking up this sport, I highly recommend developing a five-step approach because it produces superior results.

8. Dip your shoulder comfortably. This may be the most crucial part of the stance. Here is a list of the benefits created by this one simple element, all of which will happen automatically.

It clears the path for your armswing. While standing erect, dipping your shoulder • straight down causes your head to move to that side, while keeping you square with your target line. Your head weighs about ten pounds, so to maintain balance, your hips move in the opposite direction. With your hips out of the way, your arm is now able to swing more like a pendulum. The consistency with which you perform this “dip” is critical to the pendulum motion. Doing it to a degree of comfort makes it repeatable.

The movement of your head to the side places one eye more directly above the target line. •For most people, this will be your “dominant” eye. This enhances the accuracy of your pushaway by giving you a more direct line of sight down the target line. It’s just like aiming a rifle.

Dipping the shoulder enhances your ability to walk the ball in a straight line. Look at your •footprints in the snow or in the sand. You will see that as you move forward, your footprints move from side to side. This is because as you walk, your weight shifts from side to side. If you are shifting from side to side, so is the ball! Remember, we want to get the ball on a line and keep it there! Any sideward movement is taboo! Dropping your shoulder changes your sense of equilibrium. You begin placing one foot more directly in front of the other, as if you are walking a tightrope. You will move straight forward, the ball will move straight forward, and you will have one more reason to visit the beach: to study your footprints in the sand! Life is good!

Dipping your shoulder also enhances the consistency of your delivery by allowing your •head to remain steady and focused. Swinging any heavy object from one shoulder just naturally pulls the shoulder down. Allowing this to happen during your approach means that your head changes position during your approach. Keeping your head steady is crucial to your ability to concentrate! For this reason alone, it is worth embracing what nature wants and dip that shoulder before taking the first step!

9. Anchor your elbow. Champion archers bring consistency to their shots by drawing the bowstring back and anchoring their hand to the exact same spot on their chin every single time. This principal works for bowling as well. Keeping your elbow anchored tight to your side stabilizes your arm and provides a consistent starting point for your shot.

10. Aim your forearm. Absolute truth #3 states: “The ball travels a line toward the pins.” Pointing your forearm directly at your target puts the ball on that line! Having your forearm pointing along that line ensures that it stays there once you begin your approach. Previous elements of the stance have aimed you: this one aims the ball.

11. Keep your hand under the ball. This element is a minor one but is important because it sets up your arm to swing like a pendulum, keeping the ball on its intended target line. Remember to continue to support the ball with both hands. You are now fully prepared to initiate the approach!

P.S. No mention is made of how high to hold the ball in the stance. This is a matter of personal strength and comfort. Ball height during your stance is important because gravity will be used to produce the speed of your shot, not muscle power. This will be discussed as part of your next skill, the pushaway.

Tip: Once in your stance, run through a mental checklist to ensure a uniform posture from frame to frame. This not only promotes the consistency of the remainder of your actual delivery, but it also engages your mind to take control at this point. The most important elements of this checklist are weight on one foot, shoulder dipped, forearm aimed at the target, and hand under the ball.

Chea’s 2nd ABTA Title at West Covina - (L-R) Greg Velarde, Andy Yu 3rd , Emilio Flores, Pengsean Chea (Champion $1,950), Carlos Umana, Jessica Ting (Runnerup) and Chris Marquez.

WEST COVINA — Wel-come everyone to the weekly edition of ABTA news. We re-turned to West Covina for our 1 day event, and had a nice turnout of 240 entries. They got a decent shot, as the cut scores were fair with the men having + 48 and the women had a +5. The Super Seniors added to the board (2 men and 1 female) were Victor Paolucci +44, Dino Cantoria +37 and Wendy Soo Hoo -5. Super Seniors are men 63 and over, and for the women a young 55. That would give us 58 bowlers making it to the semi-finals.

Top Quailifiers were: Men, Virgil Hilvano +147, and Women was Dana LeCount +70. Each of them will get a paid entry into a future regu-lar ABTA event. The top seed Hilvano drew the Match Se-ries. This time it was worth $412. The top seed drew a 417. We had no bowlers that bowled this score during qual-ifying so we will carry over that amount to West Covina and estimate the total at $900. For the 3-6-9 qualifying, both Marcus Battista and Cezar Marcella missed on the final shot. They will split the $50 consolation. The 3/6/9 will be $3,000 at West Covina.

Pengsean Chea 2nd ABTA Championship at West CovinaAll Pots Carry Over to West Covina

ABTA at West Covina for Special $3,400 1st w/BonusesOur optional doubles. Fin-

ishing first were Teddy Villa-roman and Julian Conwi with a 1367 for $130. Second was Roland Suase and Nghiem Tran with 1363 for $110. There was a total of $1320 paid out in doubles and 26 paid spots with low to cash of 1302.

In the semis we saw Peng-sean Chea lead the field with a +118 to sit out and bowl for the title at West Covina. Coming in second was Ar-mand Garcia with a +101 to sit out the first round. It took a +36 for the men and +11 for the women.

Our top seed in semi-finals had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $3,500. The pot is maxed out and we have a back-up of $2,145. Mr Chea drew a 221. After a re-view of all the scores bowled, we had no bowlers who shot that score. We will have $3,500 at our next 2 events, plus a carryover.

This would bring us to our top 16 Match Play finals. In the first round, the seven losers were Bobbie McCol-lum, Paul Bunya, Christine Smith, Phil Magno, Kin Sang Chung, Brian Reyes, and Shaun Suase. They received checks of $100 each. In the

2nd round, the 4 losers were Michael Kong, Rey Josafat Jr, Randy Folden, and Armand Garcia. They received checks of $110 each. This would get us down to the final four bowl-ers. At this point, our horses would be paying anywhere from a low of $73 (Andy Yu and Jamescart Alarcio) to a high of $146 (Jesse Lane) de-pending on who would win. In this round we saw Jesse Lopez (10th seed) bowling Jessica Ting (15th seed). In this match, we would see Jes-sica continue her good bowl-ing and advance to the semi final match with a 250 to 213 victory. In the other match we saw Jamescart Alarcio (13th seed) bowling Andy Yu (12th seed). In this match it was Andy who would come out with the victory and advance with a 222 to 203 finish. Jesse Lopez and Jamescart Alarcio finished 4th and 5th and re-ceived $120.

Our semi-final match was all set , and pitted our 12th seed against our 15th seed bowling each other. In the weekly “horses” we would see Jessica paying $91 and Andy paying $73 if they would win their match. In this match it was Andy who would strug-gle on the pair as he opened

the first two frames and then again in frames 5 thru 7. While Jessica was not doing much better as she opened in the 2nd thru 5th frames with 3 single pin spare misses. She was able to find the shot in the 6th thru 8th frames with a turkey. That was enough against Andy. She would go on to finish with a 172/221 to 123/167 and advance to the title match. Andy would finish 3rd for $200 and for those lucky “investors” that had Jessica as a horse, she paid $91.

The title game was set, and in this match it was a re-match to the first time these 2 bowled in a title last year. Pengsean got his first win at Foothill Lanes (West Covina also). Pengsean elected to start the match first and would do so with a “ham bone” to begin the match and jump out to a 25 pin advantage. But with an open in the 6th on a 4-7-10 split, Jessica was back in the match and only trailed by 4 pins going into the 7th frame. Both bowlers would stay clean the rest of the match. It was Pengsean who would throw another double in the 8th and 9th frames and would finish with a 222/250 to 180/229 and take home his 2nd ABTA championship. He would take home $1,000 for 1st place, $850 inn Cash and Carry, and an additional $100 for wearing his ABTA Shirt for a total of $1,950. Jessica, who did so well, would take home $500 for her 2nd place finish.

Champion Pengsean Chea who is a fine young gentle-man, (and good sport) is from Fontana and used a High Road drilled by Marv Sar-gent. He is single and would like to thank Emilo, Carlos, Phil Magno, Randy Folden, P.J. Buckner, the ABTA, the ABTA Staff, and his friends.

Jessica Ting (2nd Place) is from Los Angeles and used a Gravity drilled by Aarik Tor-res. She is single but taken by another fine ABTA bowler Chris Marquez. She would like to thank her family, the Marquez Family, the ABTA, the ABTA Staff, and this was for you Uncle Rey. Rey was a great man. He and lovely wife Brenda Averia were solid ABTA Members a few years back. God Bless You Rey.

Andy Yu (3rd Place) is from Monterey Park and used

a 900 Global. He is married to Winnie and they have 2 chil-dren in Calvin and Kerry. He would like to thank the Mou Liu bowlers, his friends, the ABTA, and the ABTA Staff.

The weekly winner of a 900 Global Sponsor Ball was Cezar Marcela. He won the Jewel. Each time you bowl, you get a free ticket for this prize given away by our Sponsor, 900 Global. In our weekly raffle; the winner for an ABTA regular entry was David Dittlinger and Jesse Lopez, EFX Bracelet was Jose Acosta and Marvin Crowder.Winning a Thanksgiving en-try was Cezar Marcella. Win-ning a 900 Global Eagle ball was James Walker. The rest of the results are in the payoff column in this paper.

DOWNEY—The first place match took place on 17-18, but the scores were still pretty good. Team 6’s Leonard Ruiz 248-259-205/712, Ramon Torres 224-268-206/698, Larry Gray 234-205-234/673 and Bruce Colbert 241-234/673 let up the third game, and it cost them the game and totals to Team 12. Arnold Cheesman led 12 and the pair with his 249-248-268/765, and he got help from David Cogswell 213-210-268/691, Sonny Dew 237-223-211/671 and Art Jones 224-223-218/665 for their three points and a rematch next week.

Team 14 moved ahead of Team 7 with their three wins. Nick Wilson bowled a great set, 251-266-300/817 to lead 14 and the pair as Ramiro Garcia 215-200-253/668 and Clyde Lumpford 268/653 also contributed. Team 7 bowled well too, with Ron Peter leading them 235-226-234/695, with Matt Garcia 279-210/670, Mike Villareal 257-226/665 and Juan Ellison 235/624. They won the first two, but the 300-253-268 put up by 14 was too much to hang on to totals.

Harry Wong 234-245-257/733, Vernon Adams 268-246-216/730 and Bruce Williams 267-205-223/695 led Team 3 to four wins over Team 9’s Katrina Fujikami 279-231/690, who got snapped by a stick with her second game 279 for Brylaw, Kurt Arakaki 228-237-205/670 and Kevin Yamauchi 206-202-234/642.

Team 10’s Raul Rosales 220-279-259/758, Steve Gurrieri 247-247-245/739 and Gabriel Mar-tinez 212-237/629 won four from the mostly absent Team 13. Brandon Kraye 234-265-238/737, Deeronn Booker 214-228-245/687, Juan Camarena 242-210/637 and Armando Zavala 213-235/622 came out with the second game win.

Team 11 swept Team 1, using Billy Myers Jr. 256-268-216/740, Tony Burrell 226-256-233/715, Thurmond Davis 254-249/676 and Larry Stephens 226-213-234/673. Kevin Peterson 202-238-221/661, Adam McKenzie 212-235-206/653 and Johany Polony 210-257/639 led Team 1 who had a brutal evening.

Team 16 had a monster set, which helped them sweep Team 4. Kevin Valmonte stoned a nine to keep him from eight in his 259-280-246/785, but he still led his team. Greg Neuer 249-222-288/759, Mike Cammarata 234-207-278/719 and Andrea Snyder 237-202-226/665 also kicked pins all over the place. The team put up 979-911-1038/2928, while Team 4’s Jeremy Glover 255-221-225/701 and Brandon Grant 257-205/638 had a rough go.

Most bowlers show up with their equipment, but not Danny Ontiveros, who led the pair with his 256-227-280/763 using the ball he had to punch up fifteen minutes before league, sans bowl-ing shoes. All was forgiven, since he helped Mike Faraci 216-217-202/635 and Sam Hitchcock 208-215/615 take four from Tri-Star Vending’s Mark Myers 221-257-216/694, Larry Campbell 236-224/638 and David Yamauchi 215-225/607.

In the final match, last place Team 5 won three from Team 15. Eric Snow 234-233/665, Paul Varela 248-215/655 and Jeff Seesholtz 279-200/629 led 5, while Sean Lemon 247-238-209/694 and Andy Clark 226/608. Have a great week and see you all Monday!

mike martin picked up the 7 – 10 split, Tuesday night in the Business Network League. Congratulations Mike! Too bad he had turned away and didn’t get to witness his outstanding (almost impossible) accomplishment. BusinEss nEtwOrk The three high men for the night were Lyle Wiedeman 245-212 / 617, Gary Armstrong (aka Weak) 211-223 / 616 and Dave Berlotti 244-202 /611. Fred Fouts probably would have made the top of the heap too but he missed the first game and shot 211-202 for the second and third. Ladies high games were shot by Lauren McClure 154, Tracy Everley 153, Jamie cook 153 and Kathryn Martin 151.wED mEgA vEgAs Sam Hitchcock shoots a big 738 series with games of 213-258-and 267 and Jim Cameron who was subbing on the Supreme strikes team shot 718 with games of 223-248 and 247. The next “attention getters” were Winston Armstrong 222-246 / 664, John Hong 255-222 /648, Dan Raidy 224-214-205 / 643, Keith Klagg 213-248 / 640. Honest, it’s true. I had everyone in the office verify his score. We took a vote to induct him in the “Hall of Shame” but then noticed that he redeemed himself with a 242 and 202 so we let him slide this time. Careful there Matt. For the ladies; Shannon Wilhelm was a house on fire and shot 201-246-205 / 652 ! Laura Conklin scored 213 / 561, Jackie Burns 547, Frances Ham 213 / 537 and Karen Everhart shot a nice 210. Now this is the league that everyone is talking about and determined to conquer. Leading the scoring was “Super sub Sam Hitchcock” 246 / 618. Only two other 600’s were recorded, one by Mike Francis 221 / 610 and the other by David Lindsey with 222 / 604. Does this give you the picture of how challenging this pattern is? The rest of the top ten shooters were Jeff Carr 226 / 590, Rob Piroozshad 210 / 580, Keith Klagge 212 / 578, Alan Meyerson 226 / 567, Shelby Shirlock 204 / 562, Mike Cacace 210 / 557 &Mike Belair 220 / 547. ***Special mention goes to Kristi Zimmerman who missed game 1 but made up for it with 234 and 210 for her last two games. would be uncomfortable for the first 20 minutes, which it was, but you eventually become comfort-able with what you’re doing. There were only three or four people in room. It’s not like you’re posing in front of a bunch of people. And I feel good about my body, I didn’t feel nervous at all about posing.

“I saw the photos the day they were taken,” she added. “I don’t know what shot they choose, but they were all superb. Black-and-white, all very creative.

“To think about all of the fe-male bowlers out there and they asked me? Ultimately it was my decision and I’m very flattered,” Kulick continued. “There were a lot of different athletes involved. We’re all different. It’s all about the physiques for each kind of ath-lete; it’s not about being a size 2 person.”

Kulick became the only wom-an ever to win a major sports title without the aid of an automobile or a horse when she won the 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions at Red Rock Lanes in Las Vegas, defeating an otherwise all-male field of 63 PBA Tour champions. Previously, she had become the first-and-only woman to earn an exemption to bowl full-time on the PBA Tour during the 2006-07 season.

Kulick earned the right to bowl in the 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions as the first PBA Wom-en’s World Championship winner. That win was part of an unprec-edented string of four consecutive major championships (U.S. Wom-en’s Open, USBC Queens, PBA Women’s World Championship, PBA Tournament of Champions). Her TOC victory also earned her a two-year exemption to return to the PBA Tour.

Kulick will be among 49 PBA Tour exempt players who will join a field of 240 bowlers – men and obviously women – from around the world for the third annual PBA World Series of Bowling Nov. 4-20 at South Point Bowling Cen-ter in Las Vegas.

The former Collegiate All-American (Morehead State University), current member of Team USA and two-time Woman Bowler of the Year also has just begun a three-year term as an ath-lete representative on the United States Bowling Congress Board of Directors.
