The five-part series will air on ESPN on consecutive Sun- days at 2 p.m. EDT, conclud- ing on Oct. 11, and feature 12 of the sport’s most recogniz- able faces. The field includes Team USA members, former professional stars, interna- tional standouts, collegiate champions, top amateurs and perhaps the comeback story of the year. Missy Bellinder, a 27-year- old right-hander from Ful- lerton, Calif., is one of the 12 bowlers who qualified for the televised (tape-delayed) por- tion of the event. More than 170 competitors battled through 24 grueling games of qualifying Aug. 4-6 at Strike Zone Bowling Cen- ter inside Sunset Station Ho- tel and Casino in Henderson, Nev., before the field was cut to the top 48 competitors for 16 additional games. After 40 games, the top 12 advanced to a single-elimination TV brack- et. The five shows were taped on Aug. 8 and 9. The 12 players were divid- ed into four sub-brackets, and on each of the first four tele- casts, three players will face off for a spot on the final show, which airs on Oct. 11. There have been very few opportunities for women bowlers since the Professional Women’s Bowling Association ceased operation in 2003, so for them to be back on ESPN is a major step for women’s bowling. Missy’s show is scheduled to air on Oct. 4. For complete coverage and background information about the U.S. Women’s Open, please log onto bowl.com and click on the U.S. Women’s Open graphic. A First For D2 SAN DIEGO The NABI San Diego tournament last weekend was at Parkway Bowl, & David Danielly won his first NABI title. He had come close before, but this time he was definitely focused & determined! He had bowled well both in qualifying & the semifinals, & was became the seeded #2 in the finals. Contest #1 was a nail biter that he se- cured by a scant four pins. On to the final match that had him bowling Chris Foley, who had also been bowling exception- ally well all afternoon. Unfor- tunately for Chris, he sustained a pinched nerve in his bowling arm & was having trouble with numbness. David continued to focus on winning, & when the last frame was rolled, he had secured title #1. Congratula- tions, David! Also competing in the top 5 were Paul Phounsavath, George Evans & Tony Nunez. $50 guaranteed sidepots were collected by Go Go Brown (2), Phil Horn, Paul Willey, Chad Hill, Dan Stauf, Troy Thompson (2), Mike Tangonan, Brian Watkins, Tim Knight (1/2), Danielly, Phoun- savath & Foley (2 ½). George & Jared Evans shared the 3-6-9 pot, & Brian Watkins just missed a perfect 300, but still collected for a 300 handicap game, worth $125. Finishing 6th, & receiv- ing a ball rejuvenation & re- surfacing courtesy of Bowlers Depot, was Jared Evans. The next NABI tourna- ment will be September 19th at Kearny Mesa Bowl. Check the Bowling News next week for tournament details, & we’ll see you at Kearny …. (we’ll also save the usual cookie for you!) They moved to the Unit- ed States in 1954. Their first home was in Portsmouth, Ohio. Two years later they moved to Kingston, NY. In 1959 the cou- ple settled in Monterey Park, CA. Charles jumped into the real estate business, and Shirley busied herself with raising two boys, Bill and Charlie. The Kinstlers became a bowling family in the early 1970’s. Shirley bowled in the San Gabriel Valley Monday Travel League for many years, and her boys loved to keep score for mom and dad in the evening leagues. She loved going on cruises and had traveled to Alaska, The Equator, Mexico, Russia, the Greek Isles, Hawaii and more. MeglemreLONG BEACH—With La-

bor Day past, bowlers will be returning to the lanes for a new bowling season, however, not the Vegas League. We got an early start for the 2009-2010 winter when we kicked off the new season on August 17.

The only bye of the year is Labor Day and now we are re-turning to bowl through March 22 and then head for Las Vegas for the optional doubles and sweeps event. A reminder that deposit for the Vegas charter trip is October 5 and the bal-ance will be due February 1.

Hopefully, everybody will be on deck 10 a.m. Monday, September 14, at Valley View Bowl in Garden Grove. As reported last week, the league spotlights 6 teams tied for first place, following the opening three weeks of league play, and we expect it will remain as competitive as it has in the past.

Welcome back and good luck to all for their highest game an/or series ever bowled. You may collect one of those new USBC awards (many changes this season) for your efforts.

Viejas Adds a “Striking” New DevelopmentVIEJAS BOWL brings new excitement to East County, continues

Viejas Outlet Center’s transformation into “lifestyle center”

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – August 27, 2009 – Viejas announced plans today for a new, boutique bowling center, to be called Viejas Bowl, at the Viejas Outlet Center, across from the award win-ning Viejas Casino.

The new development boasts 15,667 square feet of space and will include 12 United States Bowling Congress certified lanes and numerous flat screen TVs for sporting and other events. Other features are planned and will be announced at the opening of the center. Construction is underway and Viejas Bowl is scheduled to open in late fall. It will be located on the east end of the Viejas Outlet Center, across from the popular, new Fun Zone Arcade, providing an “entertainment zone” with an array of options for all ages.

“We are excited about this new addition to the entertainment lineup here at Viejas,” said Tribal Chairman Bobby L. Barrett. “Viejas Bowl will be casual, but upscale and will provide a new, af-fordable entertainment option for families in the area. We’ll have comfortable couches and a fun lounge feel, which will fit into the Viejas theme and represents the next step in offering a diverse entertainment complex.”

Viejas CEO Lyn Baxter said, “Viejas Bowl is our latest move toward creating a true “lifestyle center” at the Viejas Outlet Mall. This is the direction many traditional retail centers are going, especially as they explore new approaches in this challenging economy. Fortunately, Viejas Outlet Center’s transformation to a “lifestyle center” is already well underway, with the addition of a day spa, Movies in the Park, Farmers Market and the ice rink, which has been a huge hit. Viejas Bowl is the latest, and probably our most dramatic, move toward the “lifestyle center” approach. So far, our customers have definitely embraced it and we think Viejas Bowl fills a void in East County.”

Viejas Bowl will be open seven days a week and will be available for children and adults of all ages. More information on hours and prices will be announced soon.

Fontana Bowler Keeps Dream RollingJosh Dulaney, Staff Writer for The Sun

FONTANA—Bowling and street-cred may not be synony-mous today, but at Argo Lanes one night 30 years ago on the south side of Chicago, Fontana resident Ziggy Czaja approached the foul lines with about $15,000 in “ac-tion” bets behind him as he battled another bowler for $750 a game.

“We were poor, so we had to hustle,” Czaja said Thursday be-tween frames at Del Rosa Lanes in San Bernardino. “You could win or lose $15,000 in four hours. At the end of the night a guy handed me $2,000 and said thanks.”

The sport has come a long way from shady betting to bumper-bowling birthday parties.

National Bowling Week wrapped up Saturday as thousands of bowling centers throughout the country offered free-game coupons to entice participants into beating the world record of 548,721 games bowled in one day.

Promoters believe the week-long celebration is part of the sport’s ongoing image evolution.

“It’s been terrific,” said Henry Lewczyk, vice president of mar-keting and research for the Bowl-ing Proprietors’ Association of America. “We’ve probably picked up a ton of national exposure and publicity, which gives us a tre-mendous amount of consumer support.”

The effort has been featured on Fox News Channel and CNBC as well as in USA Today, which highlighted New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul’s enthusi-asm for the sport.

Lewczyk said the prominence of athletes like Paul and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis - who looks to open a bowling center in Baltimore - is helping to market the game, which he touted as the No. 1 participation sport in the country with more than 68mil-lion participating annually.

Affordability along with the change from singular bowling “al-leys” to multipurpose family cen-ters has helped make the sport one of the fastest growing at the high school level, Lewczyk said.

“A lot of kids that are coming up now are not viewing the same centers you may have viewed when you were a kid,” Lewczyk said.

When Czaja, 51, was a kid in Chicago, he got hooked on the sport after bowling a 63 his first game. His mother would give him a dollar a day for lunch money, but he had other plans for the cash.

“I’d take it and bowl two games and (rent) a pair of shoes,” he said, smiling.

Czaja earned a Professional Bowlers Association card in 2002. In June, he was the only competi-tor to bowl a perfect 300 at the United States Bowling Congress’ Senior Masters tournament in Las Vegas. He finished 18th in the field, ahead of PBA Hall of Fame bowlers Ernie Schlegel and Tom Baker.

A network analyst at Patton State Hospital, Czaja said he aver-ages 227 in a scratch league at Del Rosa Lanes and about 210 in the PBA. Czaja said he’s bowled 20 sanctioned 300 games. He practic-es about 10 games a week and may bowl 20 during a tournament.

LAKEWOOD — We hope you all had a nice Labor Day weekend and now feel rested and ready to conquer the new bowling season here at Cal Bowl. Let’s all remember our grandparents this Sunday, Septem-ber 13th as that is the day to celebrate Grandparents Day. We don’t have too many leagues to report this week. But not to worry as the Fall leagues are starting and the scores will be coming in for our weekly report.

MALAYSIA—The fabulous Melaka International Bowling Centre was officially opened for business last month by the Chief Minister of Melaka, Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, and now all involved are looking forward to welcoming bowlers from around the world in mid-November for the 45th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup.

George Heng, the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress vice-president, presented the centre with a certificate to recognise that, with 52 lanes, it is the largest centre in Malaysia.

The lanes are in two sets of 26 with a roomy concourse between them. It is an ultra-modern, two-storey building with space allocated to kiosks on the ground floor. It is also designed to be friendly to wheelchair users with facilities including a special lane for wheelchairs on the staircase. The first floor boasts restaurants, a media-cum-conference room and ball storage.

As for the tournament, 90 countries have now indicated that they will be sending representa-tives.

Despite their outstanding international record over the years, no Malaysian bowler has ever won the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup. Could this change this year? The big news for the host coun-try is that Zulmazran Zulkifli, a semi finalist last year in Hermosillo, Mexico, who also hit a perfect game there, will be participating again. He also took part in 2002 in Riga, Latvia where he finished 10th, and he will surely rank among one of the favourites to carry off the title.

He will be joined by Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman in the women’s section. Siti won the Women’s World Ranking Masters title this year and is the current Malaysian national champion. She was only 15 when she played in the Bowling World Cup for the first time, in 2006, in Caracas, Venezuela, finishing 10th.

She will be up against our semi-finalist from last year, England’s Zara Glover, a former world champion, and Tina Hulsch of Germany who came third in 2007 in St. Petersburg, Russia and made the top 24 last year. They will all be looking out for Scotland’s Laura Rhoney, who will be making her 8th appearance in the event and who finished 4th in 2006, when her perfect game won her the high game of the tournament trophy.

But one of the stars they will all want to see will be the USA’s participant, Walter Ray Williams Jr, a pro bowler with an immense pedigree. With a record 45 PBA titles to his name, he has been inducted into both the USBC and the PBA Hall of Fame. He has been the PBA Bowler of the Year six times. He will be joined by Tenelle Milligan in the women’s section, who won three silvers and two bronzes in the 2007 Women’s FIQ World Championships.

The QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup is one of the most popular events in the calendar and many players come back time and time again. This year, we already know that we will be welcom-ing back several participants.

Marin Tranier from New Caledonia will be making his 12th appearance while Maurice Talane will be representing French Guiana for the 9th time. Apart from Laura. Northern Ireland’s Kevin Horton will also be with us for the 8th time. Also present, for the 7th time, will be Shant Panos Tomassian of Iraq and Bashar Kalaji from Syria, Bashar won the ‘Sportsman of the Tournament’ award in 2001 when the event was held in Pattaya, Thailand.

The qualifying rounds for this year’s event start on 16th November with the finals on 19th. It is expected that the finals will be live on Malaysian television.

BOWLING NEWSSeptember 10, 2009 Page 11

JAT Farm Clubby David Gordon

FULLERTON – The JAT and JAT Farm Club is back - as we kicked off our 2009-2010 season at AMF Carter Lanes. We had a very good turnout in the Farm Club with thirty-four bowlers filled with excitement and anticipation of their first title. These bowlers were challenged with the traditional tournament format of 5 qualifying games, a cut of the field for 5 games of match play, and then a cut to the top 5 bowlers in a TV-style roll-off. The number of entrants for this tournament gave us a match play cut of the maximum top 16 bowlers.

I want to welcome all of the new bowlers to the JAT Farm Club as you will find quite a number of new names this season. I also welcome back our returning veterans who showed much improvement over the summer. And I want to wish the dozen or so bowlers who moved up to the JAT Open division all the best. Have confidence in your skills. Lastly, our appreciation goes out to AMF Carter for our accommodations and a proactive move to prevent lane failure during our tournament.

For you new readers, I list in these tournament articles, all scores of 220 or more. It’s my way of recognizing the up and coming young talent and really makes up a good scrap book for future resumes. Now you have something to shoot for - your name in lights. Bradley Hansen started the group off right in the first game of qualifying, with the tournament high game of 266, giving a preview of what was to come. Andrew Svoren was next up with games of 245-263. Very good bowling you two, who were then followed by Frank Pacheco 239-256-238, Brandon Turner 248, Jonathan Greenhalgh 246, Bobby Hornacek 245, Joseph Samora 244, Adam Dubia 243, John Struckman 222-227-232-236, Jonathan Torres 235, Lawrence Merriweather 232, Dara Ajimine 225-231, Gabriella Mayfield 225, Tristan Beaner 223-224, Alan Hecht 224, Joe Mayo 222, and Tyler Samora 221. Pacheco led all bowlers after five at plus 134, while a mere minus 54 made the cut at 16th.

In the next five games Pacheco continued his dominance of the conditions going 256-259-237-235. More highs came in from Beaner 257-223-256, Hansen 222-256, Mayo 233-226-221-254, Turner 232-250, Noel Sosa 235-242, Ajimine 238-235-235, Svoren 236-225-235-225, Hornacek 233-234, Greenhalgh 228, Struckman 223, and T. Samora 223. The bowler making the most of match play was Beaner with an eleven position jump taking him in to the finals.

Thus the finals started off with 5th seed Hansen (+218) meet-ing up against 4th seed Mayo (+224). Mayo jumped on the op-portunity to a 221-189 victory and advanced to meet 3rd seed Beaner (+224). Here the match was a lot closer but in the end, Mayo had prevail once again 234-224, and on up the step lad-der. Now against 2nd seed Svoren (+254), the two battle tightly until the last couple of frames. Mayo takes the win 205-177 to now meet the top seed Pacheco (+470). Frank had pretty much dominated the tournament and now (after a long wait) was ready to claim his first title. However, Mayo also seeking his first title had other thoughts. In the best of three games Mayo captured the first game 233-190. Pacheco fought back in the second game and two end with equal scores of 175. In a two-frame roll-off, Pacheco capture this mini-match to stay alive 37-35. Now in the final and deciding game, neither wanted to concede. Mayo though (sporting a new hair color) struck when he needed too and on to his first title 230-212. Congratulations Joe.

So now we have the first tournament in the bag with a lot more to come. Our next event will be September 27th at Bruns-wick Covina Lanes. Check-in begins at 8:15 and the action starts around 9:00. A reminder to you bowlers and financial supporters, that it is a new season. That means new membership dues ($15) will be needed along with the normal tournament fees ($35). Also, bring in the extra $1s as there are new strike challenges and brackets for the year. Get your friends out here - it’s time to get their feet wet as well. See you in a few weeks.

AMF Carter Lanes — August 30th, 2009 (L-R): Frank Pacheco – 2nd; Joe Mayo – 1st; Andrew Svoren – 3rd.

Youth Travelby Otha Stubblefield

LOS ANGELES—South-ern Los Angeles County Youth Travel will start the season at Gardena Bowl on Saturday, September 12.

We’ll meet at 1:00 to go over some rules and get your suggestions for making the travel league better than ever.

The primary goal, of course, is to give youth bowl-ers a higher level of compe-tition by visiting a different bowling center and different series of lane conditions each week.

We also provide coaching, scoring and equipment strat-egy and we’ll guide you into the more competitive scratch tournaments like JAT, State Scratch, the Christmas tour-naments, Firecracker, Team Challenge, etc. The league fees will remain at $15 for 4 games of bowling.

All fees not going towards lineage will be returned to the bowlers as scholarship, with a bonus $200 scholarship award-ed to the team in first place at the end of the season.

This is a SCRATCH league, so there will be no handicap. We never turn away lower av-erage bowlers, but we don’t want anyone to be discouraged from trying.

Anyone who is interested can e-mail me at [email protected], or just show up at Gardena Bowl on Saturday at 1:00pm!

2009 Tournament of Champions Pays Over $11,000 in Scholarship

at AMF Cerritos Lanesby Glenn Gimeno

CERRITOS—The Cerritos Youth Program held its annual Tournament of Champions on August 30th at AMF Cerritos Lanes. The Tournament of Champions (TOC) is the end of the year event that our junior bowlers participate in and earn schol-arship money. In the last few years, the juniors in the youth program has been able to raise enough funds to be able to pay out over $10,000 total in scholarship to our youth bowlers. This year’s event pays out a grand total of $11,625 to all the bowlers that participated, with all participants earning at least a $50.00 scholarship. .

The “C” division comprises of a mix of younger junior bowl-ers that will continue to blossom in future years. In this division, Jelo Torres, shot a big 167 game scratch and Angelika Torres would roll a 144 game during qualifying. In the end, it would be brothers Joshua and Jeremy Ilog that would make some noise in the stepladder rolloff semi-final match. Joshua would finish in 3rd place for $500 in scholarship while Jeremy would face top seed Alyssa Flanagan. Alyssa would win a close 246-243 (all match results with handicap) match to finish 1st place and $1,000 in scholarship while Jeremy would finish in 2nd place with a $750 scholarship. The “B” division mixes some of our bowlers from the Striking Force league with some of our Seniors to create a group of bowlers that can take their games to the next level, as evidenced by a 211 and 206 scratch games rolled by Adrian “The Beast” Cunanan. Another bowler that was making noise was Ronald Shigg as he stayed consistent throughout the day, even shooting a 212 scratch game, to reach the semi-final match against Julian Zavala. Julian would have just enough to win 236-230 nail-biter to go against top seed Adrian Cunanan in the championship match, while Ronald finished in 3rd place and $500 in scholarship. Julian would have momentum to help him finish with his second consecutive title and a $1,000 in scholar-ship with a 262-224 over Adrian, who finished in 2nd place with a $750 scholarship.

The “A” division features the best of the best of the Cerritos Youth Program as there were many big games from this group with Steven Bojorquez getting the front nine en route to a 279 scratch and Stephanie Zavala not far behind with a 267 scratch. In the end, it would be fifth seed B.J. Harlan who would run the gauntlet and win all four rolloff matches to win the cham-pionship. B.J. would survive a tiebreaker against Stephanie Zavala (finishing 4th for a $350 scholarship) to advance to the semi-final and then bowled well, 221-192, against multiple-time TOC champion Shaun Morad, who would finish 3rd for a $500 scholarship. B.J. would win in the championship match 213-164 against top seed Steven Bojorquez , who finished 2nd for a $750 scholarship. The 2008-2009 year was another successful year for the Cerritos Youth Bowling Program and I would like to say thank you to all the junior bowlers that have participated throughout the year, and, hopefully, years to come. Thank you to all the parents as well, including Tom and Estrella Ferry, John Foley, John Elston, and Faith Hogan, for their support and help-ing this program continue for years to come. Hope to see you all in the new bowling year!!

National Deaf Bowling Newsby Connie Marchione

The Annual Deaf Classics And Tournaments Schedule Is Ready

JOILET — Once again Walter Niesluchowski, who is the President of Great Lakes Deaf Bowling Association, compiled together one of his bowling hobbies the latest schedule of deaf classics and tournaments for the 2009-10 season and e-mailed them out to interested individuals and clubs. Walt took over this task as a love of labor a few years ago to help deaf bowling clubs with their classics and hosting deaf tournaments. Like last year’s schedule (Waco, Texas) Deaf Bowlers are hold-ing the first deaf tournament with its 3rd annual Mixed Handicap Tournament on Saturday, September 12, followed by Indianapolis with Greater Indianapolis Club for the Deaf’s 50th annual Indi-vidual Handicap Classic on Saturday, October 3. Also on October 3, West Virginia School for Deaf Alumni Association is holding its 27th annual John Popovich Mixed Handicap Tournament in Keyser, WV. The big one on schedule is the 13th annual Deaf Senior Bowlers of America which will be drawing deaf senior bowlers as well as deaf fans to The Orleans Hotel, Bowling Center in Las Vegas on October 13 to 15. Many deaf bowlers who are ardent deaf tournament bowlers and free to travel will be attending by entering either one of them. Walt said, the schedule has the person to contact and the name and address of bowling center it will be held in. The bowler gets more information before leaving home for it. Anyone who wants to have this schedule, can get one by e-mailing: http://nski.com/pdfs/2009-10u.pdf

21st Deaflympics Summer Games Begins In Taipei September 5

Although the Deaf Bowling Team USA headed by coach Ed

Abakumoff (Riverside) left Los Angeles last August 6 for Taipei, they joined with other sports Deaf Teams USA there for week long training to get accustomed to Taiwan’s environment. With thanks to Ed’s wife, Donna, who furnished me with the schedule which has list of 17 different sports in this 21st Deaflympics Summer Games.

The schedule shows the opening ceremonies to begin on September 5 and closing ceremonies on September 15. Sports like badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, football (soccer), shooting, table tennis, tennis and volleyball are played on each day in this 11 days span. Bowling is schedule to start with 6-Games Singles event on September 8 and continues with Doubles on September 9, Trios on September 10 and Team event on Sep-tember 11. Then after a rest day on September 12, continues top 16 bowlers Masters match plays on September 13 with Masters finals on September 14.

Deaf Team USA has 3 warm-up days at the bowling center on September 5, 6 and 7. The veterans on the men’s team, Darrell Stogryn (CA), Rai Doblmeier (Rhode Island) and Robert Ellison (CA) are joined with newcomers Ronnie Zuchengo Jr. (NY), Gene Takinen (AZ), and Randall Perry (Wash.). The women’s team has veterans Jerilyn Keller (TX), Patty Brothag (OH), Cheyenne Rog-ers (LA) with newcomers Sharon DiTondo (NY), Maria Ruiz (NY) and Elaine Herzig (MD). The coa\ch for both teams is two-time Deaflympics veteran Ed Abakumoff (CA) who was on Deaf Team USA at Italy and Australia.

Of all the veterans, Keller is in her 4th Deaflympics, the longest ever on Deaf Team USA, having previously bowled at Denmark in 1997, Italy in 2001 and Australia in 2005. She is looking to add to her booty of 2 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals. Brothag is next in her 3rd Deaflympics and was the silver medalist in women’s Masters at Italy. Rogers is in her 2nd Deaflympics. DiTondo, Herzig and Ruiz give Team USA in par with other nations.

Of the men, Stogryn won Silver medal in Masters in Australia, Doblmeier at 16 was the youngest bowler at Australia and Ellison is in his 2nd Deaflympics. Zuchengo and Perry are excellent bowl-ers, making Team USA as strong as other nations.

I hope to be to get the scores to report how our teams are doing.
