NORWALK—The return to Keystone Lanes on Mon-day provided a better scoring report then the last time there, thanks to VP Vi Wilson. Kar-en Mauricio led the honor roll with 545 followed by Melba Knight 535, Doris Lewis 539, Aresia McGee 518, Glasyce Perrin 220 and Wanda Worrall 211.

The team scene produced a three-way tie on 12 wins for Keystone #2, Westminster #1 and David McNaught CPA. Valley View #2 moves up to second spot with 10 wins, followed by Cerritos number 1 and 2 teams tied at 9. Four teams tie at 8, one at 6, two at 4 and three teams vie for last place with 3 wins each.

After the 4th week, the league is still short three bowl-ers so please, if you or you know someone to fill the in-volved teams, PLEASE CALL Alice at (562) 423-1567. There’s no problem regarding league fee shortage.

Pris Mauricio will return to bowl next week, following her sceond cataract surgery, and this writer was on deck after a year long absence. The league approved a 125 average for me and I almost got it with 131-367. It sure was good to be back on the lanes, even if my bowling approach had to be changed.

Another social note in the league was news that Jarra Gallina will be missing Mon-day when she takes a cruise to Mexico.

NEXT WEEK: Monday 9:30 A.M. at Westminster Lanes. Remember, only West-minster Lanes and Linbrook Bowl are scheduled at 9:30 a.m. All others are at 10 a.m. Addresses and phone num-bers of featured on the back of league rules.

Weiss Edges Mabilangan to Take 1st Donkee Title at Carter Return

FULLERTON—This weekends event had a little bit of every-thing. We saw a new name in the winner circle and a bad break to a former champion. Zach Weiss going into the 10th frame need-ing a mark, left a pesky 4-8 and almost chops and Glenn Mabil-angan leaving a pocket 7-10 in the 10th to come up short. Deven Walls almost saw perfection before being thwarted by a 10 pin on the last ball for 299. Zach has been with us for the past 3 yrs, his unique 2 handed style generates ball speed and hook and is very exciting to watch. Zach has been bowling just 7 yrs and sports highs of a 290 and 788. Zach was throwing an Ebonite Game-breaker drilled by Tim Albin of Albins Bowling Supply located inside Bowl O Drome in Torrance. When not bowling Zach sup-ports his Bowling hobby as a Property Manager. Zach would like to thank Mark Baker for the recent lesson for getting him back on track. You get hold of Mark Baker through Westminster Lanes and likely Fountain Bowl last I knew. Zach would like to thank his family – Granparents Margie and Bob, Parents Terry and Howard, and brother Aaron for their support. And Zach would also like to thank the Donkee Tour staffers as well.

Mystery Game and Series were both carry overs with no one hitting 152 game or 435 series. They will be worth $300 for game and $150 for series at Cal October 12th. Please see ad in future papers. See you all at there.

Stan Por Wins ABT Championship at Linbrook Bowl

ANAHEIM—Stan Por won his fourth Orange County Ama-teur Bowlers Tour (ABT) championship at Linbrook Bowl on Saturday, September 13, 2008 during our one-day 4-game Beat-the-Board tournament. Stan bowled in our 12-noon squad and shot games of 239, 278, 238, and 255 for a handicap series of 1010 on his way to winning the $800 guaranteed first place prize plus $800 from the Progressive Pot. Mark Payne from Westmin-ster came in second shooting a 1000 handicap series and took home $400. Hong Kha came in third shooting a handicap series of 987 and took home $200.

We also held a ‘Best 2 Sweeper’ this weekend. Justin Taino and Hong Kha tied for first place each shooting a 536 and each receiving $115. Tim Tran came in second with a 511 and re-ceived $60. Jan Fishburn came in third with a 508 and received $40. The winner of the Scratch Sweeper was Hong Kha with an 875. Winner of the Senior Sweeper was Rick Laub with a 946.

Stan Por is a past champion and a lifetime member of ABT. Stan has a 300 game and 755 series to his credit. He was using a Brunswick Vapor Zone drilled by Ben Mach for the win this weekend. Stan wanted to thank Ben for drilling his equipment and all his friends for their encouragement and support. Stan also wanted to thank Linbrook for hosting the tournament and to ABT Staff and Directors for running an outstanding tournament. Stan plans on using his winnings for more ABT tournaments.

The Mystery Game Pot of Gold game and score were drawn after our final squad. Game #4 was the game drawn, and 261 (possibly good for $400) was drawn for the first chance. The second chance score of 247 (possibly good for $200) and third chance score of 217 (possibly good for $100) were then drawn. Shig Shozi was the winner of the second chance and received a check for $200. Remember, the Mystery Pot of Gold is available to all members (Classic and Masters) and only costs $5.

The ABT staff and membership would like to thank the man-agement and staff at Linbrook Bowl for hosting our tournament. DAVE COOK Versus DEWAINE WEST Match Game Ends in 300 - 300 Tie!by Frank Weiler

MURIETTA—The first week of play in the Cal Oaks 640 Scratch Trio League saw DAVE COOK bowl DEWAINE WEST in match play. Both of these portsiders carry 230 plus book aver-ages and always post high scores when battling each other for match game points. Last week was no exception.

Cook bowled 257 - 300 - 212 = 769 but only won half a match game point when West bowled 279 - 300 - 243 = 822 against him. That half point coming when the second game saw both bowlers rolling perfect games!

The high point of the match was the tension packed tenth frame of the second game, with both bowlers going for perfectos, SIDE BY SIDE! Through most of the game West was bowling first, putting pressure on Cook to match his every strike. Cook did! Then in the tenth Cook made sure he bowled first, to shift the pressure and force West to match what he did. West and the rest of the league bowlers waited and watched patiently as Cook struck three times for his 300. West then took a deep breath, looked back at the crowd behind him and confidently rolled three consecutive solid strikes for a matching 300. WOW! So whats new? West just weeks ago bowled a 300 in this summers California State Masters Tourney and the only perfecto in this years PBA Senior U.S. OPEN at the Suncoast in Las Vegas.

West used a Fury Pearl ball and played a tight inside line. Cook used the Gravity Shift ball and swung the ball from inside out to the five board and back.

This 300 to 300 match game score is a CITRUS BELT record. THANK YOU Bowling News for supporting CITRUS BELT bowlers.

National Deaf Bowling NewsBob Jones Led with 258/789 in Deaf Travel at Cerritos

by Connie Marchione

CERRITOS—So. Calif. Deaf Traveling league had a party for its founder Connie Marchione’s 85th birthday at AMF Cer-ritos Bowl last Sunday. Maybe the bowlers celebrated too much as they had a tough going on the lanes as Bob Jones led a short honor roll of 6 bowlers with a 789. Jones’ series included a sea-son high 258 game and a closing 205 as the only bowler with two 200s that day.

Ed Abakumoff almost hit two with his 203 and 199 in his 763 series. Darrell Stogryn had a off-day with 202/727, A returnee Pablo Yoma hit 703, Bob Taylor a 221 and Don Millwee 207 to complete the honor roll for the day.

Abakumoff’s league leading Riverside did an about face from its season team high 2363 to 1778 here, losing 8-12 to Yoma’s S. F. Valley. Riverside’s 146 ave. Emad Aranki who had a “dream” 790 series in that 2363, has to go back to his “coach” to find out what went wrong.

Despite losing, Riverside’s lead is safe because Jones’ 789 was wasted as his 2nd place Los Angeles did bad losing 6-14 to Darrell and Millwee’s (5 points himself) El Camino Village, The Villagers jumped up to 2nd place 3 behind Riverside.

Third place Tri-Cities with Dan Smith and two subs could not do much, falling down as they lost 3.5 to 16.5 to Taylor’s Glen-dale, which got out of the cellar. For Glendale Dennis Vigil won 5 points and Andy Lorenzo who is still in his slump but managed to win 4 points.

The league thanks AMF Cerritos Bowl management and staff for hosting and giving its bowlers a trying experience on the lanes. There will be a one-week bye and it will move to Pickwick Bowl on Oct. 5 where the scores hopefully will be higher.

BOWLING COACH FOR DEAF TEAM USA AWAITS SELECTION

CERRITOS—Bowling ad hoc chairman Ed Abakumoff was asked by this writer if the bowling coach for the Deaf Team USA had been selected.

Ed replied, not yet and that three are in running, they are the 2001 Deaflympics coach Don Ketter, Kansas and 2005 coach Carol Moers, Colorado and a name I did not catch.

So I suggested to Ed to throw his hat into the ring too because he, like Ketter and Moers are Level I Bowling Coach and had experience bowling in the 2001 and 2005 Deaflympics. Also be-cause of his work as the ad hoc chairman, he deserved to go there with the Deaf Team USA.

Furthermore I told him not to make a mistake like I did when I as a Level I coach, did not put myself in as the coach for the 1997 and 2001Deaflympics after all the work I did from 1992 to 2001. I hope that Ed do what I suggested and for the deaf sports governing body to select him for the position.

Ms. Soon is ABTA Female Champion at Cerritos Lanes (L-R) Gerald Sanchez (ABTA Casher) and boyfriend and #1 fan of our latest Champion Louie Soon, at the right are Richard Lim 3rd, Marie Cris Sanchez 4th and Rina Cordero (runnerup).

CERRITOS—The ladies were at it at Cerritos Lanes as they finished 1st, 2nd and 4th in the top 16 single elim finals at Cerritos Lanes. Topping them all was a Young Pretty Louie Soon who did it the hard way, winning five straight matches in the single elim fi-nals after getting by our also pretty top seed Rina Cordero in a close match to become our latest champion and rightfully so.

Ms Soon was superb on this day topping a nice field of 192 bowlers to take home a nice $600 First as she opted to bowl in our reduced rate entry, and also gained a $100 ABTA shirt bonus.

Our return to Cerritis was great, lots of fun and pro-duced cut scores of +48 (men) and + 41 for the ladies. Due to the nice turnout, we had 46 Bowlers make the Semi Finals/Finals. Super seniors added were Jim Smith, Janine Ditch, and Rico Cayton.

The bowlers entered the semis. We had Rina Cordero top the field with a nice +1447. So she would sit out and bowl for the title. Dom La Guardia was close +144, so he would enter in the second round of the finals It took a +41 Men, and +24 for the three guaran-teed ladies to make the top

16. Losers in round one were Don Pulliam, Donnie John-son, Eddie Jones, Raul Aldaz, Jeff Taino, Timmy Austin, and Bert Dancel. They got checks of $100

Round two saw John Mill-er, Jim Smith, Dom LaGuar-dia, and Glen Mabilangan lose out. They, were 6-9th places and $115 each.

Round three had good matches as Richard Lim edged Rich Aquino 219-214. Louie Soon got by Marie Cris San-chez 210-185. Marie Cris and Richard were 4th and 5th and $130 each and nice bowling with Ms Soon and Mr Lim to meet for the right to advance to the title game vs Rina Cor-dero.

This game again went to Louie as the pretty righthand-er got by Mr. Lim 216-188. Richard was 3rd for $200 with Louie on to meet Rina for the title.

The title game was now underway. Rina elected to lead off. She copped a spare and Louie struck and was clean first three frames. Rina appearing a bit nervous was just off enough to have only one mark the first six frames.Louie with 3, held a 37 pin lead. Rina then found herself and tossed a perfect strike and marked out trying to put the

pressure to Louie but the mar-gin was just too much as Louie won her first ABTA Title in a 143/192-127/176 count. We are surely proud of her. Not bad for a Sweet Lady just en-tering to have some fun with her friends, as she exclaimed, “ I surely didn’t expect to win”. Well, Louie You did win and we are all proud of You to say the least, esp Gerald and Bart! Great Bowling by a very nice Young Lady!

Very Nice bowling also by one of our most faithful mem-bers, Rina , who almost got her first title and she is a nice lady and good to all. She surely bowld well in the semis and only 1/2 as good in the title game. She could have been the champ. Your title will come Rina as you are improving so much on the lanes!

Rich Lim also a faithful member could have won his second title, as he bowled very well until Louie upset him. He is definitely one of the Good Guys. Great Bowling!

Tourney Hi Qualifiers were Dom LaGuardia +144 (men).Tiffany Morita led the gals at +74 and both get paid entries.

The doubles were topped by La Guardia and Glen Mabi-langan at 1371 for $150. Glen in 2nd with Jeff Taino 1362 and $120. Tri Vo and Minh

Dang 3rd 1350 for $110. We paid 16 places and $1,070 in the doubles.

The Match Game was UN Matched at 288 and with the carryover of $1,065 we will estimate the Match Game at $2,400 Saturday at CAL Bowl.

The Match Series was also UNmatched at 684 so we will have a $620 Carryover. And estimate the Series to be $900 Saturday.

Ryan Okamoto was last up in the 3-6-9 rolloff but missed on shot 3. We will have a $1,200 pot this Week at CAL. He got a $50 Consolation for

hosting our last Sat. tournament. Don Eide wants to thank them, also. Don won with his Brunswick Fury, drilled by Tim & Diane Albin at Bowler Dome in Torrence.

He bowls in one league with his wife, Carol; the Monday af-ternoon 55 plus Seniors at Victor Bowl. Don was a plumbing & mechanical inspector for the city of Santa Ana before he retired. He is now enjoying his retirement by bowling, fun on the water in a sea-doo & bicycling.

Don joined NABI 2 years ago, after being out of bowling for 15 years. Don dedicates this win to his wife Carol, his biggest fan & a special dedication to his granddaughter, Leeann, who is this years homecoming queen for Victor High School.

Even though it is Fall of 2008, we are looking forward to the the 2009 Nationals, where we will see Don in the Tournament of Champions. Way to go Don!

Our Beat the Board winners were as follows: (all with HDCP) Don Eide, bowling a 699 series, Kathleen Doolen, bowling a 612 series, Shane Kimberling, with a 607 series, Noli Valdeleon with a 587 series and Tim Bodiford, bowling 581 series Our sidepot winners were:

STUDIO CITY — Yellow jounalism downplays legitimate news in favor of eye-catching headlines that sell more. It may even feature exaggerations of news events. A good example of Yellow Journalism can be found in the movie Citizen Kane even with Mr. Kane’s “Declaration of Principles”. Yet in the right hands and with truth & honesty, the printed word can be a powerful thing, so staying away from yellow journalism we present our own Declaration of Principles: Pinz will provide the people of this city with a weekly column that will tell all the bowling news honestly. Pinz will also provide you...the true bowling news - quickly and simply and entertainingly. And no speical interests will be allowed to interfere with the truth of that news.

He might just be able to keep up this average, great bowling Jon; thanks for not sandbagging. Sweetness Quote of the Week: Do your share to make your school and community better • Cooperate • Get in-volved in community affairs • Stay informed; vote • Be a good neighbor • Obey laws and rules • Respect authority • Protect the environment’

Southern Los Angeles County

Youth Travelby Otha Stubblefield

GARDENA—I apologize to all my loyal fans for not put-ting out an article last week, but I got busy at my day job.

We are now done with our 2nd week of Southern Los An-geles County Youth Travel. Our first week started at Gar-dena Bowl.

Our first honor score of the season was shot by Jeremy Glover. After a 239 game, an eight pin was followed by 11-strikes for a 290 game. The game three lane change cut short his bid for another 800 series, but his set was finished with our current league high series of 958.

Brent Shern was our 2nd high shooter with 224, 216, 173 and 208 for an 821 series. Curtis Howard palmed his way into an 812, and Josh Gartrell’s second highest game of 241 rounded out his 800 series.

The other’s shooters from week 1 were Claudell Redwine 217, Steven Alford 211, Austin Gadaire 201, John McCullin 227, Brandon Pekins 215, and Keyon Lemus 225. Week 2 found us at Gage Bowl, jewel of Huntingon Park.

Scoring was a bit tougher as Gage, yielded only two 800’s from our youth bowlers. Leading for a second week in a row was Jeremy Glover. No honor scores, but back to back 247’s earned him a nice 887 series. His teammate, Keyon, shot 814 with a 253 high game.

Justin Gadaire had the 2nd highest game with a 233, fol-lowed by Brent Shern 211 and Lawrence Merriweather 208. This Saturday’s session will be at Keystone Lanes, starting at 1:30. We could use a couple of bowlers who are interested in expanding their knowledge of bowling and their level of competition.

Shoutout to Keyon for his first 300 game at Fountain JAT, Jeremy for winning the Del Rosa JST Open Division, John McCullin who came in 2nd in Advanced Division, and Jeremy Glover who won the Canoga Park JAT. See you at Keystone!
