TOKYO, JAPAN – Future Professional Bowlers Asso- ciation Hall of Famer Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, enjoyed one of the most re- warding days in his career Sunday, winning the DHC PBA Japan Invitational at To- kyo Port Bowl for his 18th ca- reer PBA Tour title after roll- ing a 300 game in his semifinal round match. The championship round was video streamed live on PBA’s Xtra Frame bowling channel, completing start-to- finish online live coverage of an international PBA Tour Chris Barnes Enjoys Rewarding Day with 300 Game event for the first time. Barnes, 44, won the $43,032 (5 million yen) first prize with a 206-196 victory over top qualifier Mike Fagan of Fort Worth, Texas, who was trying for back-to-back titles after winning the PBA World Championship seven days earlier in Las Vegas. Barnes also won a $43,032 bonus for rolling a championship round perfect game in eliminating England’s Stuart Williams, 300-225, in the semifinal match. For the day, Barnes earned 10 million yen, or $86,064 U.S. dollars. Williams, the No. 4 quali- fier, ended the first-title hopes of two-handed player Shawn Maldonado of Houston, Texas, 242-237, in the first steplad- der match, and Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., 245-222, in the second match. Earlier Sunday, Australia’s Jason Belmonte and partner Yang Hyeong Kyoo of Japan won the $5,164 first prize in the Scotch Doubles special event with a 236-204 victory over England’s Dom Barrett and Manae Kameshima of Japan. The doubles competi- tion paired a member of the international contingent with a PBA Japan player. International Team B (Fa- gan, Sean Rash, Dom Barrett and Barnes) won the Baker team special event with a 239-184 victory over Interna- tional Team A (Wes Malott, Williams, Eddie Van Daniker and Belmonte), and shared a $10,328 bonus prize. The team event involved four Interna- tional teams and four Japanese teams bowling eight Baker format games with the top two advancing to the final match. Barrett won a $4,303 prize in a special “last man stand- ing” event that closed the tour- nament program. STANSELL’S 728 TOPS LOW SCORING DEAF TRAVEL AT KEYSTONE LANESNORWALK — Southern California Deaf Traveling League hit another bump in its stop at Key-

stone Lanes as all six trio teams scored under 2000 team 4 games series. Only two teams were able to score over1900 series but under 1960 the six teams are originally set up for.

The tough oiled lanes baffled the bowlers as Jeff Stansell managed to close with the day’s high 214 for a 4-games 728 series to lead the honor roll of 3 bowlers. His opponent in this match play league, Bob Jones had 716 and Gorman Low started with 201 and closed with 200 for 707. The high lady was Denise Burrows with a 173 and 560.

For the second session in row third place Low’s Hollywood rallied to sweep its 4th game for 4 points to end with a 10 - 10 points tie against league leader Eagle Rock. This action allowed absentee Dan Flores’ second place Orange County, which beat Riverside 13-7, to move up into a tie with Eagle Rock for first place.

Also Jones’ cellar dwelling S F Valley with Gardy Rodgers’ sweeping 5 points, managed to win again for the second session in row with 13-7 overt Stansell’s Mid City. Sixth place S F Valley is now 2.5 points behind 5th place Riverside.

This 54 years old deaf traveling league thanks Keystone Lanes management and staff for hosting with tough lanes condition which was a learning experience for the bowlers.

Because of Super Bowl, there will be a 3weeks hiatus and the league will resume on Sunday February 8 at Noon in Jewel City Bowl in Glendale.

BOB JONES ROLLED A 299 AT HARLEY’S SIMI BOWLSIMI VALLEY…Last month Bob Jones mourned the death of his late friend John Segafredo

and thought of bowling a 300 game to remember John by. He came close by one pin, a 299 in his Monday night Jeff’s Proshop Trios League at Harley’s Simi Bowl. Jones who last season rolled three 300 games in one month spree at Harley’s Simi Bowl also has a 754 series there this season.

Thousand Oaks bowling center: ‘It’s a bummer’

It’s on. It’s off.It’s on. It’s off.It’s on. It’s off. That’s the planned bowling

center at Janss Marketplace in Thousand Oaks. The bowling house has been the subject of speculation in the news media for almost a year and a half about its much-ballyhooed opening.

Amid all the flip-flopping, it appears now that the project is simply a flop.

Informed sources have told examiner.com that the project

is not going to happen. There’s been no official

word about the planned 20-lane bowling center, which was supposed to be accompa-nied by an indoor skateboard-ing area, arcade, restaurant and lounge at the outdoor mall in east Ventura County.

The stated goal for the bowling center’s opening was the first three months of this year.

That won’t happen.Examiner.com’s repeated

emails to the mall’s public re-lations department have been ignored.

When things don’t work out, it’s typical that no an-nouncements are made. The feeling seems to be that past pronouncements might be for-gotten and brushed aside.

A group of local entrepre-neurs had targeted the 17,000-square-foot former Linens ’n Things site at Janss for the bowling center. But there is absolutely no construction tak-

ing place and local merchants aren’t expecting any.

One merchant at the nearby Marshalls store said she had talked to her friends for the last year about the bowling project, but that all discussion had recently dissipated. “It would have been good for the community,” she said Sunday. “It’s a bummer.”

The Conejo Bowl was the last bowling center in Thou-sand Oaks. Conejo Bowl owner Larry Janss closed the community landmark in 1995, saying that longtime patrons had moved away and a two-year-old city smoking ordi-nance had reduced business by 10%.

Janss Marketplace has re-cently been touting plans to open Nordstrom Rack and Sports Authority.

But as far as a bowling cen-ter, that dream appears to have died.

By Fred EisenhammerThank You

A store directory at Janss Marketplace in Thousand Oaks on Sunday doesn’t in-clude a bowling center.

More kudos for theSilver Lake Atom Splitters

SILVER LAKE, CA -- Chris Barnes, take a bow.

Same goes for Wes Malott, Tommy Jones, Dom Barrett and Bryon Smith.

The five ace bowlers were all members of last year’s Sil-ver Lake (Calif.) Atom Split-ters, who defeated the Los Angeles X in the Elias Cup finals to claim the Professional Bowlers Assn. League cham-pionship.

Silver Lake’s PBA League championship team has been honored by the PBA as one of its top 10 stories of 2014.

Silver Lake scored a 4-2 victory over the X in “the bat-tle of L.A.” to secure its first championship in the league’s second year. The WTT New York City KingPins claimed the first league title in 2013.

The Atom Splitters’ 2014 team changed considerably from the first season. Malott bowled for the X the previ-ous season, Jones was on the KingPins in 2013 and Smith bowled on the Dallas Strik-ers in 2013. Only Barnes, the team’s franchise player, and Barrett returned from the Atom

Splitters’ team that finished in the league’s second division in 2013.

The Atom Splitters’ success in 2014 came as no surprise to bowling experts. The team was loaded with elite players, as chosen by manager Mark Baker. In the Oct. 31 draft to restock the teams for the 2015 season, three Atom Splitters were taken among the first five selections in the first round.

They included Malott (drafted second by the Pitts-burgh Jack Rabbits), Barnes (drafted fourth by the Atom Splitters) and Barrett (drafted fifth by the Philadelphia Hit-men). Additionally, Jones was taken in the second round (10th overall) by the Dallas Strikers. Smith was taken in the fifth and final round (34th overall) by the Jack Rabbits.

The league’s eight teams begin competition in their third season March 28-29 at Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine. ESPN will televise all the rounds of the league com-petition tape-delayed.

Wes Malott competed on the Elias Cup-champion Silver Lake Atom Splitters last year. He was drafted second overall by the Pittsburgh Jack Rabbits for the 2015 season.

Terry hodGson(The Intelligent bowler)

strikes againby Frank Weiler

FONTANA - The day Terry Hodgson explained to me the difference between oncoming and upcoming was the day I recognized that he was a WISE GUY, a.k.a. intelligent, smart, knowledgeable. You know, like Solomon not the Godfather.

Since that day I always go to Terry when I need an answer. You might say he is my ANSWER MAN.

In addition Terry is a great bowler. In the past I have expounded on his exploits including his propen-sity for rolling 300 GAMES, especially as a super senior (over 60) bowler.

Well, Terry has done it again. He rolled his six-teenth perfect game at Foothill Lanes as he continues his march to 70. While any kid using two hands can roll a big score, who cares. It happens every day. This story is special because Terry is a super senior rolling 300s the old fashioned way: with focus, accuracy and consistency. Most of the kids bowling today won’t even be on the lanes when they are Terry’s age, let alone be bowling 300s.

Terry Hodgson is a gifted bowler. He has a GOD GIVEN talent for bowling. He is a super senior and is still performing at a high level. This is a great bowling story.

Congratulations Terry and thank you BOWLING NEWS for supporting Citrus Belt senior bowlers.

The Insurance agent Makes all the difference

By Cameron Linder

In the world of insurance, you have many options: talking geckos, good hands, quirky spokeswomen, catchy jingles and funny commercials to grab your attention. Most of them claim they want to save you money! Price is important, but as some-one who works in the industry I can tell you: it’s the agent that makes ALL the difference.

I have a client in Huntington Beach, CA—Rich Paulin who owns The Specialist Complete Carpet Care. He’s one of the best carpet cleaners I’ve ever met—it’s why he’s called “The Specialist.” I had some serious stains in my carpet and he came back at least 3 times to retreat the spots until they finally disap-peared for good—all for no extra charge. He went above and beyond for me and treated the job as if the carpets were in his own home.

When Rich called me and asked for advice about an insur-ance problem he was experiencing, I of course wanted to help. For the first time in his company’s history, Rich had accidental-ly damaged a customer’s carpet. His agent at that time assured him over and over that his insurance would pay for the damage. While Rich waited for the company to settle the claim, Rich paid out of his own pocket to have the carpet replaced (because that’s just the kind of businessman he is). But, as any good insurance agent might expect: the company denied the claim. They told him that insurance isn’t meant to act as a warranty on a businessman’s work and there isn’t any significant coverage you can buy that would pay for that kind of accident!

Rich’s agent gave him the runaround and kept encouraging him to contest it with the company. I had to break the bad news to Rich that in reality, the insurance company was absolutely right! The company would pay for pretty much ANY thing else BUT damage to a customer’s carpet he was working directly on. However, because his agent was wrong and had given Rich erroneous counsel as a licensed professional, I pointed out that his agent should in fact, be responsible for paying the claim under the CA insurance laws!

I helped Rich write a demand letter to his agent. Within 30 days, the agent’s employer paid Rich the full value of the claim! By thinking outside the box and not accepting no for an answer, I helped Rich get paid on a claim that the insurance company NEVER would have paid!

As you can imagine, Rich has entrusted me to handle all of his insurance. I even saved him money. Ultimately, it wasn’t about how much money Rich paid in insurance premiums, what really made the difference was the insurance agent.

Monacelli Avenges PBA50 Tour Loss to Williamscontinued from Page 1 In the Teen Masters Grand Championship that followed, Michael Coffey, 19, of Mel-bourne, Fla., defeated 18-year-old Kelly Skalacki of Corem, N.Y., 202-156, in a match that involved a long oil pattern on the left lane and a shorter ap-plication on the right. In ad-dition, all Teen Masters play-ers are limited to using one “old-school” plastic ball and/or one urethane ball, placing emphasis on player skill over technology. Coffey, who is bowling for Lindenwood University in St. Louis, started with three strikes and had only one open frame – a missed 10 pin in the sixth frame. Skalacki, a mem-ber of the Webber Interna-tional collegiate team in Lake Wales, Fla., struggled with the demanding environment and didn’t strike until the eighth frame. Both Teen Masters gender division winners were mak-ing their national television debuts. “I was a lot less nervous than I thought I would be because I prepared really hard and this is something I want really bad-ly,” Coffey said. “It’s like be-ing around family; you’re not nervous when you’re around family and I feel like this is where I belong.” Is PBA competition part of his future plans? He answered emphatically, “Yes.”

Parkin won match three eas-ily, 266-202. Parkin, who rep-resented the PBA West Region in the inaugural PBA Women’s Regional finals, defeated PBA Southwest Region representa-tive Clara Guerrero of Pfluger-ville, Texas. Parkin struck on nine of her first 10 shots, while back-to-back 4-6-7 splits in the seventh and eighth frames ended Guerrero’s hopes. “I was extremely excited when I heard about the PBA Women’s Regional program,” Parkin said, “so I jumped on the opportunity right away. I actually cancelled a big trip to Costa Rica in order to bowl one of the regionals, so this definitely made it worthwhile. It was really a great opportu-nity to be able to come to the World Series. “On top of that, my focus was on making the TV show,” she continued. “I practiced a lot getting ready and I bowled really well to make it to TV. That’s the grandest stage of all, the reason we all bowl. Today, I came out remembering why we bowl – because we love our sport. I wanted to have fun and I did and the pins cooper-ated, so it all worked out.” Match four pitted 2012 PBA Rookie of the Year Josh Blanchard of Gilbert, Ariz., representing the PBA North-west Region, against 2013 Rookie of the Year EJ Tackett of Huntington, Ind., represent-

ing the Central Region, in the PBA Regional Finals. Blanchard took the lead with a spare followed by three strikes while Tackett struggled with pin carry in the early frames. Tackett made a ball change in the sixth frame and got lined up, but Blanchard was lined up as well, putting the match away with a late string of five strikes to win, 258-236. “I had a good ball reaction the whole match,” Blanchard said. “I used a ball I hadn’t thrown until my last shot in practice. I struck with it and made all the right moves, so it made it easy to bowl. I knew (EJ) was going to bowl a good game and the other balls I used in practice, it seemed like I’d bowl a 210, 200, so I needed something different. After that one shot, I knew I was go-ing to stick with it the whole match.” Blanchard also made it into the PBA Regional field by winning the final Northwest Region event of the season. “I was supposed to go to (fellow PBA competitor) An-dres Gomez’s wedding, but I cancelled – and I ended up winning the regional to get into the field,” he said. While winning the Regional Finals wasn’t the same as win-ning his first PBA Tour title, Blanchard feels like he’s get-

ting closer to that goal. “I’ve been out here for two years and I’m still working at it,” he said. “I change my game every year trying to find the ‘it’ factor to get my first win. Usually when guys do that, they’ll win two or three times, and keep moving along. I’m still waiting for that ‘it’ factor.” Closing the telecast, the four winners participated in a spe-cial one-shot, low-player-out Bonus Knockout Round. Par-kin won the event with a strike in the third round to eliminate Blanchard, who left a 10 pin. Coffey was eliminated in the first round and Monacelli was knocked out in the second. The World Bowling Tour Men’s and Women’s Finals presented by the PBA, the fi-nal event conducted during the GEICO PBA WSOB VI, will air Sunday, Jan. 25, on ESPN2 at 1 p.m. ET. The WBT event will be contested using an ex-perimental “best frame” scor-ing system that is being tested by World Bowling. Finnish native Mika Koivuniemi of Hartland, Mich.; Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., and Ja-son Belmonte of Australia will bowl for the WBT Men’s title. Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J.; Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., and Sandra Andersson of Sweden will compete in the WBT Women’s final.

PBA Spare Shots: Five More Chinese “Pioneers”Qualify for Pba Membership

By Bill Vint

PBA HEADQUARTERS -- Longmarch Bowling founder Frank Zhao has confirmed five more Chinese players have qualified for PBA membership during the fourth edition of his Longmarch Pioneers League. The three-day “league” pro-gram at Longmarch Bowling Center in Shanghai over New Year’s weekend included 36 bowlers from Philippine, Tai-wan, Hong Kong, and several areas in the mainland China.

All players bowled two six-game sessions each day for three days in an attempt to establish a minimum 200 average. The five who were successful will bring China’s PBA membership rolls up to 27 members after applications are filed and approved. A se-lect few from that group plan to participate in PBA World Series of Bowling VII at South Point in Las Vegas in 2015.

Zhao said six women bowled in the most recent “pioneer league,” bringing the total of women qualifiers to 10 over the past two years. None have achieved the 200 milestone yet, he said, but two averaged over 190.

The FIeld

According to Rolltech’s frame-by-frame, ball-by-ball statis-tics for the combined 28 PBA World Championship qualify-ing games for all four animal pattern championships, the ul-timate measure of success for finalists Wes Malott, Mike Fagan, Ronnie Russell, Todd Book and Stuart Williams was their significant advantage on strikes thrown across the gamut of lane conditions.

The PBA World Champion-ship aired live on ESPN Sun-day. Stats recorded from the qualifying rounds held during the GEICO PBA WSOB VI at South Point Bowling Center in October showed the follow-ing:

● While the 240-player World Series field struck on only 51.20% of its strike attempts (37,846 strikes on 73,916 attempts), all five World Championship finalists out-performed the field by a sig-nificant margin. The strike leader was Williams, who struck on 205 of 319 attempts (64.26%), followed by Russell

(62.85%, 198 of 315), Malott (62.26%, 198 of 318), Book (61.20%, 194 of 317) and Fa-gan (59.94%, 190 of 317).

During the individual animal pattern qualifying rounds, the field struck at a 57.92% rate on the 35-foot Cheetah pattern, 49.93% on the 37-foot Viper pattern, 49.25% on the 41-foot Scorpion pattern and 49.01% on the 39-foot Chameleon pat-tern.

● Spare percentage: Malott was the best overall in spare conversion, making 105 of 119 attempts (88.24%), fol-lowed by Russell (84.96%, 96 of 113), Fagan (83.33%, 100 of 120), Book (78.07%, 89 of 114) and Williams (71.43%, 75 of 105). The field converted on 73.04% of its attempts (24,826 of 33,991).

During qualifying, the field converted 74.99% of its spare attempts on the Scorpion, 73.48% on the Chameleon, 73.16% on the Cheetah and 71.84% on the Viper.

● Single pin spare conver-sions: Malott made 98.80% of his single-pin spare attempts (82 of 83), followed closely by Fagan (98.44%, 63 of 64). Book made 96.67% (58 of 60),

Russell 94.44% (68 of 72) and Williams 93.65% (59 of 63). The field’s success rate was 92.67% (15,818 of 17,070 at-tempts).

The field fared the best with a 94.12% single-pin conversion rate on the Chameleon fol-lowed by 93.22% on the Viper, 93.02% on the Scorpion and 91.67% on the Cheetah.

● Multi-pin spare conver-sions: Russell led in multi-pin spares (92.59%, 25 of 27) fol-lowed by Malott (86.96%, 20 of 23), Fagan (84.62%, 33 of 39), Book (76.32%, 29 of 38), and Williams (69.57%, 16 of 23). The field made 74.08%, converting on 8,105 of 10,941 attempts.

The field was most success-ful in multi-pin spare conver-sions on the Scorpion pattern (76.14%) followed by 75.33% on the Cheetah, 73.68% on the Chameleon and 73.23% on the Viper.

● Splits took their toll on the field, as expected. Overall, the field left 6,566 splits and converted only 993 times (a 15.12% success rate). The conversion rate was best in the Chameleon qualifying (16.34%) followed by 14.49% in the Viper round, 15.30% in the Scorpion round and 13.06% in the Cheetah round.

Welcome to the 2014 – 2015 Bowling SeasonThe Bowlers of California have proved yet again that “WE ARE THE BEST” when it comes tosupporting our Veterans. From 1950 thru 2012-13, the California BVL Fund has donated a total of$8,940,328.55 to our veterans. The 2013-2014 year’s efforts, totaling $125,564.00 brings that totalto $9,065,892.55. The committee Thanks all of you on behalf of the Veterans of California.

As you know, these funds are used to purchase recre-ational equipment, field trips, coffee, and officeequipment for use by the veterans, and to help with social events and special outings. TheCalifornia BVL Fund was recognized by the National BVL Organization for making the largestdonation by a State Association at the USBC Con-vention in Reno, Nevada this year. We know noneof this would be possible without your continued dedication, resourcefulness, hard work and again,We Thank You.

Unfortunately, our Military is currently in conflict and we are again asking for your continuedsupport and assistance in helping our veterans return to the way of life they left. We urge you toremember the BVL Creed, as follows:

“For the good things of life at hand for millions of us, thousands gave their lives. In ourservice and Veterans Administration Hospitals are other thousands who escaped deathfighting with the same spirit for the same cause. Our debt to them is profound. The least theymight expect is that all of us accomplish everything within our means to restore them tonormal existences.”

The bowlers of California have kept the promise made to our Veterans in 1950, “We won’tforget you”.

Awards will be presented to the local associations that donate the three highest amounts. Awardswill also be presented to the associations who have donated $2.00 or more per member. All of theAwards will be presented during the California USBC Annual Meeting in Ontario, June 14, 2015.

Association Managers, please make a copy of the packet for BVL Chairman and President.

DOWNEY — Erickson Foods had a chance to wrap up the Third Round and automatic seeding into the end of the year roll-offs, but came up short in Game 3, getting 3 splits in the 10th, and allowing Pino’s Pizza to not only win that game by 11, but also Team Total by 39. With the 4-1 win, Pino’s is now tied for the league lead at 23 wins, so these two will square off again next week for the title. Ramon Torres 245/694 led the winners, while Bobby Campagnale 255/620 & Brian Main 603 were tops for Erickson. The next match saw David Yamauchi shoot 243/650 to lead J.A.T. to a 3-2 win over SYSCO, but it wasn’t enough to keep them in the hunt. Ga-briel Martinez 257/669 continued his hot bowling this round, and he was helped by Paul Barraco 247/626. Linder Insurance rebounded nicely after last week, and swept past CASAMIGO’S Tequila 5-0. Kevin Valmonte 641 and Kurt Arakaki 619 were on for Linder, while Harry Wong managed to shoot 621 in a losing cause. Mason Sher-man “Tank” rescinded his 2 week notice and then blasted his way to a nice 691 to lead his Forest Lanes team to a 4-1 win over Tifco Industries who were led by Gary Duran’s 619. Keystone Lanes was able to extend their overall points lead a bit, as they defeated Power House Video Games 3-2. Arnold Cheesman paced Keystone with 633, while Eddie VanDaniker returned from Japan with a very nice 244/687 effort.

BOWLIUM relied up their anchor, Scott Poddig and he provided the strikes as he shot 650 to lead his team to a 4-1 win over Blizz Yogurt. However, the top honors went to his opponent, Greg Neuer, who shot the leagues high set of the night, 704 as he finished strong 248 – 269, but only managed the 1 team win. Los Altos Trophies continued to move up the standings, as they won 4-1 over Alham-bra Coin Center. Buddy Lucas 259/650 and PJ Yarns 595 provided the punch for Los Altos, while Alhambra’s Doug Kempt shot 626.

Team DV8 got sixes from 3 of 4 bowlers as they shot the league’s high team series in winning 4-1 over Herzog Insurance. Ashkan Tah-vildaran 256/624, Jeff Carr 614, Sam Hitchcock 242/611 broke the 600 barrier for DV8, as did Justin Ziegler with 640 and Mikey Vil-lareal 256/604 for Herzog. Threadworks sewed up a 5-0 sweep over American Harvest Vodka as Paul Varela 656 and Butch Jackson 644 provided the 1-2 punch. Miguel Garcia with 259/619 was high for American Harvest. The Professional Approach overcame a horrible Game 1 start, and went on to win 4-1 over Cook’s Bowling Supply. Billy Myers Jr. 268/639 provided the big gun for his Approach team, while Cook’s was led by Matt “Big B” Schermerhorn’s 571. The final match saw GJC Services struggle once again on this pattern, as only Juan Zavala was able to break 500, with a 547. GJC lost all five and remain in the bottom spot.

Sidepot winners were Game 1 Gabriel Martinez 259 Game 2 Bobby Campagnale 255 and 3rd Game Super Pot went to Mikey Villareal 259. Mikey would like to thank Greg Neuer and his former boss Billy for not getting in!! The Financial Advisor’s 2nd game pot went to Miguel Garcia 259 ($240) besting the 255 bowled by Bobby Campagnale by 4 pins. The True Anchor Award was again close as 13 bowlers failed to crack 500. Mike Cammarata once again escapes, as his 452 (tying Vernon Adams!?!?!) was only 2nd, the True Anchor King returned to his throne, Derek Remijio 437.

Six weeks are in, one week and two teams remain. Will it be Erickson Foods bouncing back to slice up Pino’s Pizza, or will Pino’s have the right ingredients for the perfect pie that breaks the tie! We shall see… should be a great match and lots of exciting action with so much on the line. Come down and watch it unfold live at Del Rio in Downey, this Monday at 8pm. Who knows, I may even show up! Have a blessed week everyone!!
