The victory made Weber the first player to complete the PBA Triple Crown for a second time and tied bowling legend Earl Anthony for most major PBA titles with 10. Weber, who was consid- ered one of the professional tour’s power players when he won his first PBA Tournament of Champions with his unique high back swing back in 1978, is now 50 – the oldest player ever to win the Tournament of Champions – and affection- ately called “Gramps” by his younger opponents. He also owns a PBA Touring Play- ers Championship for his other major. His win Sunday was his 37th, tying him for third place on the PBA all-time titles list with Norm Duke, behind Wal- ter Ray Williams Jr. (47) and Anthony (43). “I don’t know what it is,” Weber said. “I get up for the majors, but there’s one eluding me and the Weber family – the USBC Masters. I really want that one, and I’m not done yet. I’m not slowing down. I have no plans to retire.” Weber won Sunday with three doubles, four spares and help from Belmonte, who left the 4-10 split three times – failing to convert it twice. “I woke up today and said my dream would be to bowl Pete and win by a pin,” Bel- monte said. “I got half of it right. I bowled Pete, but I lost by 60. “Pete is the most talented bowler the world has ever seen, and may ever see,” Bel- monte added. “To bowl him in the finals and see him break re- cords like he has broken is re- ally special. If I could achieve half of what he has done by the time my career is over, I’ll be ecstatic.” Belmonte eliminated de- fending champion Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., 229-171, in the semifinal match. Bel- monte started with five strikes while Rash threw only one strike in his first six frames. When Belmonte left the 1-2- 4-6-10 in the eighth frame and failed to convert, he gave Rash a glimmer of hope, but Rash was unable to close the gap. In the second match, Rash followed a first-frame spare with five strikes to build a 34- pin lead over Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., after Jones left and failed to con- vert the 3-4-6-7-10 split in his second frame. Despite striking on eight of his last nine shot, Jones was unable to over- come his early mistake against Rash’s error-free game. Jones started the stepladder finals with a 217-189 victory over Finland’s two-handed star, Osku Palermaa. Jones had a double in the second and third frames which gave him the lead and Palermaa, un- able to double the entire game, couldn’t catch up. The PBA Tour’s winter sea- son ends next Sunday (April 7) when the finals of the Elias Cup, the concluding event of the inaugural PBA League season, airs on ESPN at 1 p.m. ET. TracKInG deaF Pba suPer senIor FranK Gallo, Jr. In souTh reGIonalJACKSONVILLE — Last year Frank Gallo, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL made history as first deaf

bowler to win a PBA Senior South Regional tournament to go along with his historical first by a deaf bowler PBA Eastern Regional tournament few years ago. With 40 years as PBA member, Gallo, a super-senior (60 years old and over) is bowling better as he is getting older.

This year we are keeping tabs on Gallo as he is getting ready for the coming this month PBA50 Tour (a new name for Senior Tour). He had warmed up by participating in two PBA50 South Re-gional tournaments, one at Paradise Bowl in Spartanburg, SC and other at Franklin Bowling Center in Franklin, VA. I regret not having the results on both.

However, PBA released only the statistics on the senior bowlers who participated in each or both tournaments as of March 18. From this PBA50 South Regional Leaders report, we find Gallo doing well in top 10 of 91 senior participants and top 5 of 35 super seniors in 5 different categories, Points, Earnings, Averages, Percentage of Cashing and Percentage of making Finals.

So in Points which gives 25,000 points for winning, Gallo ranked 7th for 2 events total of 22,239 points. If you count the 35 super seniors competing, Gallo ranked 2nd with George Pappas ahead of him.

In Earnings with $1,800.00 being at top, Gallo is in 8th with 2 events earnings total of $1,175.00. He also ranked 2nd if super seniors were counted.

In Averages with one senior at top with 246 (17 games), Gallo is struggling in 19th place with 27 games at 218.37. He drops to third among 35 super seniors.

In Making Cashes, although Gallo is ranked 10th, he is tied with 11 others with 100% for same 2 cashes out of 2 events. He is 2nd with Pappas ahead of him.

In Qualifying for Finals, although ranked 5th, Gallo is tied with 6 others at 100% in 2 out of 2 events. All these summed up Gallo is doing great so far.

Remember this was for south regional bowlers, the coming real events are for national seniors.NOTE: DEAF TRAVEL WILL BE AT GABLE HOUSE BOWL SUNDAY NOON.

First Pba league champion to be crowned in elias cup Finals sunday on esPn

INDIANAPOLIS — The quest to determine the first Professional Bowlers Association League champion culminates Sunday when the Elias Cup Finals air on ESPN at 10 a.m. PT from Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis.

Fresh off his history-making win in the Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions, Hall of Famer Pete Weber will try to make it two historic titles in a row by leading his top-seeded New York City WTT KingPins presented by GEICO team to the title.

Weber and teammates Tommy Jones, Scott Norton, Jack Jurek, John Szczerbinski and Kelly Kulick earned the top stepladder berth for the PBA League Elias Cup finals by winning two qualify-ing rounds during the PBA Detroit Winter Swing and compiling 45 points to out-distance Jerome Bettis’ Motown Muscle (Mike Fagan, Tom Smallwood, Mike Scroggins, Ronnie Russell, Jesse Buss and DJ Archer) by seven points.

The Elias Cup finals will incorporate the Baker team format which requires each member of the team to bowl two frames in one game. The championship match will consist of two games with total pins determining the winner.

The BROOKLYN STyLES (Sean Rash, Ryan Ciminelli, Ryan Shafer, Walter Ray Williams Jr., Jason Sterner, and Tom Hess), owned by actor Jesse Williams, captured the No. 3 berth in the Elias Cup finals with the help of their win in the PBA League opening round. The STyLES will meet Terrell Owens’ Dallas Strikers (Norm Duke, Rhino Page, Amleto Monacelli, Bryon Smith, Mike Machuga and Mike Wolfe) in the Elias Cup opening match. Dallas claimed the final berth in the finals thanks to its second-place finish in the final Earl Anthony qualifying round.

KingPins owner, tennis legend Billie Jean King, and Strikers owner football great Terrell Owens will be on hand for the finals in support of their teams.

The four teams that advanced to the finals were the top point-getters after five PBA League qualifying rounds that were conducted as part of the PBA Detroit Winter Swing.

Teams that failed to advance to the finals were L.A. X (Jason Belmonte, Wes Malott, Andres Gomez, Parker Bohn III, Dave Wodka and Ildemaro Ruiz) owned by Los Angeles Clippers super-star Chris Paul; Silver Lake Atom Splitters (Chris Barnes, Dom Barrett, Josh Blanchard, Stuart Wil-liams, Nathan Bohr and Jon VanHees) owned by comedian and podcast pioneer Chris Hardwick; Philadelphia Hitmen (Bill O’Neill, Mika Koivuniemi, Chris Loschetter, Mike DeVaney, Dick Allen and Dino Castillo) owned by actor/comedian Kevin Hart and the Pittsburgh Jack Rabbits (Osku Palermaa, Martin Larsen, Dan MacLelland, Patrick Allen, Thomas Larsen and Anthony LaCaze) owned by Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley.

Enhance your PBA telecast experience:1) Watch the Elias Cup Finals on ESPN Sunday at 10 a.m. PT.2) Tune into the post-event show at Sunday 3 p.m. ET. Xtra Frame’s post-tournament show inter-views the winning team.3) Get additional Tour coverage on pba.com and provide feedback on PBA Tour telecasts through PBA’s social networking platforms on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ProfessionalBowler-sAssociation and Twitter http://twitter.com/pbatour/.

NEWHALL — In 1995 when I took over the bowling center in Newhall, now Valen-cia Lanes, I got a lot of things. I got a lot of upset Bowlers, I got a center in desperate need of updating and I got a center with a very bad reputation. One bright spot, however, is that I also got Chris Ruckey. He was 12 at the time and was always at the Center because his father Jeff was the head mechanic. Chris seemed to be going through the normal teenage “things”. You know, he knew EVERYTHING. If

In loving Memory of christopher ruckey

you said anything he would argue with you. It didn’t matter if you were right, he just liked to argue. Really irritating, by the way. Over the next decade Chris would sometimes stay up too late, drink too much, drive too fast, etc. Things you did growing up. Things I did growing up. As Chris ma-tured he became a great bowler, a better than average golfer and a passionate Dodger fan. He also had something that made him really stand out, the biggest heart in the room.

When Chris was old enough he asked me for a job. He started as a porter, worked his way up to a mechanic and finally to deskman. He was liked by the other employees and adored by the bowl-ers. Chris was the kind of guy you just wanted to “hang” with. He went fishing with some bowlers, golfed with some and went to Dodger games with others.

A couple of years ago Chris was involved in a terrible car accident. He broke his leg so severely that he needed surgery to put in plates and screws to hold it together. Since his parents lived in another state and where he lived was a long way from his doctors and physical therapist Yvette and I decided to let him recuperate at our home. During Chris’s time at our home we bonded with him. He became part of our family. In fact my son thought I was going to disinherit him and leave everything to Chris. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t all roses. A couple of months after Chris moved in I noticed my water bill doubled. I didn’t put two and two together I just thought maybe we were watering the grass more and of course Chris was there. The next month it tripled. Yikes! I started to notice that Chris took one hour showers. How could this be? He’s a guy. I asked Chris about this and he told me he was in just long enough to get clean. He told me he would cut it down and he did, to 55 minutes.

I am a 40 year Angels fan and Yvette is a passionate Steelers fan. Over the years were have col-lected a ton of Angel and Steelers memorabilia so we decided to take a spare bedroom and use it to display these treasures. Yvette asked Chris to help her with the room as I am pretty useless at that stuff. They covered all the walls except for one little spot. While Yvette was trying to decide what to put there Chris left the room and came back with a Dodger pennant and suggested putting that up. After Yvette quit laughing she put up something else. The next day, with a big smile on his face, Chris called me to his room to see something he had done. I walked in and what I saw was a Dodger museum. I stayed away from his room after that.

A few months ago Chris found out that he was going to become a father. I can tell you that I have never met anyone more excited than Chris about being a dad. It was almost all that he talked about.

Now the bad news. Chris had to have a third surgery to try and repair his shattered leg. As a result of complications from that surgery Chris passed away on March 22nd. I have tried as have others to figure out why God choose to take Chris from us and I am lost. God must have wanted someone to watch Dodger games with. Chris will be missed by all whose lives he touched

A celebration of Chris’s life will be held at Valencia Lanes this Saturday April 6th at noon. The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers a donation might be sent to Valencia Lanes to

benefit Chris’s unborn daughter.Bill Mossontte

MORENO VALLEY — It’s a madhouse on Monday at MORENO VALLEY BOWL when the Monday Nite Mad-ness crew hits the lanes. Teams like the Turkey Hunt-ers, Mighty Oaks and Mad Strikers like to have fun and do so while competing at a high level.

Dino Dennis subbed in the league recently and put togeth-er the best score the league has seen in months. His 737 (300 - 224 - 213) has only been topped once this season. BRAD BARTHOLOMEW had a 740 earlier in the sea-son.

Dino’s perfect game is the league’s high game. STEVE DORSE has a 299 to his cred-it.

Mister Bartholomew has the league high average at 217, followed by Dorse at 200 and ADAM DRANKWALTER at 197. The women are led by MICKIE TUTT with a 190 average, followed by SHER-RI TETER at 180 and LUPE CRUZ at 152.

Teter’s 655 is the best se-ries registered by a lady, while Tutt’s 246 is the high game.

Dennis used his Roto Grip Defiant Soul to bowl his per-fecto and is grateful to JIM STARKS of Bowling Products Pro Shop for the perfect setup and drilling. This was Dino’s fourteenth perfect game.

While Dino missed scoring 800 this night, he has had three in the past.

An 847 (300 - 268 - 279) in 1985 at Landmark Lanes is his high. Dino used his “Ham-mer” to nail down thirty-three strikes on his biggest night twenty-eight years ago. In 1999 he had a 805 at Fontana Foothill Lanes and a 801 at Empire Bowl in 2009.

At 73 years of age Dino is still going strong. He thanks GOD for his health and his abil-ity to stay strong on the lanes. Also, he offers his thanks to the BOWLING NEWS for covering his exploits and wife PATRICIA for supporting his bowling efforts. My thanks to WILL JUNE for keeping me posted on the comings and go-ings in Moreno Valley.

There is no such thing as tournament time—because there are fine tournaments being conducted 12 months of the year.

Ever stop to think of how many bowling tournaments are available in the world each year? An educated guess might put the figure at more than 10,000.

There are big money, small money and no money tour-naments. There are family, school, church, business, pro-fession, city, county, state, sectional, national, zone, con-tinent and world tournaments. There are pro tournaments and amateur tournaments and pro-amateur tournaments.

There are singles, doubles and team tournaments. There are events for boys, girls, men, women and mixed covering every age. There are sibling tournaments, hus-band and wife, father and son, mother and daughter, and any other relationship tournaments.

There are club tournaments and shop tournaments and office tournaments and religious tournaments. There are tournaments for people who can’t see or can’t walk or can’t hear.

And with all that only a small percentage of the number and scope of the variety of bowling tournaments staged annually have been touched upon.

Yet, many bowlers never have rolled in a tournament.Let it be known that there is a tournament for every bow-

er, regardless of the size of your average—or budget. Look through any bowling publication, check the desk or bulletin board at your bowling centers and read all your commu-nications and you’re sure to find one or two tournaments designed just for you.

Tournament bowling is the extra icing on the bowling cake.

Tournament bowling is fun, and always profitable. It isn’t always profitable in a financial sense, though many have won cash, merchandise, trips, and other goodies, large and small. But you always enter into a new and exciting phase of the sport where the competition is different but the game is the same.

How can you tell if a tournament is a good one? Check out those conducting the tournament, where it is being run, and read closely all the rules and fine print on the entry blank. A tournament survives only if bowlers are given a fair shake and tournaments don’t last unless they have needed participation.

In many tournaments, particularly local and state and national association events, plus most charity tourna-ments, many dedicated people work hours that stagger the imagination.

In some tournaments you can win six figures or more. In others you can’t win much more than satisfaction in being a player, and maybe a title and trophy, be it thimble size or taller than you are.

You can’t gain the full rewards bowling offers unless you roll in tournaments even now and then.

So give your local or state tournament a whirl. Don’t miss some of the fine competition your local center offers. Check out tournament clubs. There is a wide variety in tournaments as there is in the aims of bowlers but bowlers can find the right one with a little effort.

If you’ve never rolled a tournament, roll one in the near future. If you have, roll one more.

There can be problems at times, like when the nudist convention ran a bowling tournament. Nobody looked at the scores.

are a lot of other PBA mem-bers who share those traits.

“By creating the Tony Reyes Community Service Award, it’s our intention to perpetuate Tony’s memory by recognizing the unselfish con-tributions of other PBA play-ers. I have no doubt that this will become one of the most coveted awards a PBA mem-ber can win.”

The postmark deadline for nominations will be Nov. 15. Nominees must be cur-rent PBA members in good standing. The winner will be selected by a PBA committee and announced along with the 2014 PBA Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Steve Nagy Sportsmanship Award winners.

Nominations can be made by anyone. A nomination form will be available on pba.com.

The Perfect Gameby Steve Felege

An “April Fool” storyIt is an early Saturday morning and birds are chirping to announce the arrival of spring as Kelly arrives at “Thunder Bowl.” Her league season had ended just one short week ago and she is ready for a break in the action. “Damn!” she thinks to herself, “Why did Bill do this to me?!” Bill is her boyfriend (ex-boyfriend if things go as badly as Kelly expects).

A few weeks ago, Bill had a brilliant idea (in “guy” terms). He would buy a ticket to enter Thunder Bowl’s weekly “Beat-the-Champ” competition. He would put Kelly’s name on it, then tell her that it was the winning ticket! She would show up to bowl the “house champ”, but he would arrive just before the real winner and say, “April fool!” They would then sit back and watch the competition before he would take her out for a grand lunch at “Los Avignon”. Lunch at “Los Avignon” was a virtual guarantee of forgiveness from any romantic sin. There he would propose. Poor Bill.............

Poor Bill, indeed. He wasn’t a bowler, but as fate would have it, the ticket he had purchased was drawn! He was now faced with having to tell his intended, an average bowler at best, that she was about to be embarrassed on local TV...........and that it was his fault. He didn’t think even a lunch at “Los Avignon” could save him from this impending fiasco.

Now he watches helplessly as Kelly takes her stance on the ap-proach. She wants to kill Bill, but she is so nervous that his pres-ence in the audience is actually reassuring. She smiles at him, then grits her teeth in anger. He can only shrug his shoulders as if to say, “HEY, WHO KNEW!”

The lanes at Thunder Bowl are divided in half by a walkway which serves as an entry to the back of the house. Music blares and spotlights shine on the door at the far end of that walkway. Slowly it opens and a lone figure ceremoniously emerges. He is the reigning “House Champ.”

Slowly he walks toward the cameras. Carrying the weapon he has chosen to defend his crown. He smiles and waves to the audience and the cameras. Having reigned for eight weeks, he has grown accustomed to this ritual and has no intention of relinquishing his crown this week........especially to a girl!

To be continued.

Kent said. “All I wanted to be was like my hero Mark Roth.

“I want to thank PBA for the opportunity to be a pro-fessional bowler and to live a dream.”

Kent joins his brother-in-law, Parker Bohn III, in the PBA Hall of Fame. Kent’s wife is the former Chrissie Beamish; Bohn’s wife is the former Leslie Beamish. They are the second set of brothers-in-law in the PBA Hall, joining Mike Aulby and Steve Cook, who also married sisters.

Wiseman, who won the first of his 11 standard titles in the 1990 Fair Lanes Open in his hometown in his first television appearance, won the historic 2004 USBC Miller High Life Masters which was staged on a special lane in-stallation inside Miller Park in Milwaukee – the first time a bowling championship had been conducted inside a major league baseball stadium.

Wiseman also had memo-rable performances in the 1992 Tournament of Champions and 2009 USBC Masters, finishing second in both tournaments.

Early in his career, Wise-man defined himself by com-piling the winningest televi-sion record in PBA history at that time (21-5), and by intro-ducing a colorful persona that branded him as something of a maverick.

“I never had a lot of natu-ral ability and often wondered how I got to this point,” Wise-man said. “I have to give my parents a lot of the credit. I learned to strive for perfection from dad and to never give up from my mom.

“I took what I learned from a lot of the greats in the sport, combined it with my own abil-ity and made a career out of it.”

Including the Class of 2013, the PBA Hall of Fame consists of 61 performance, 27 meritorious service and three PBA50 (formerly senior) in-ductees.

MURRIETA — One of the great things about bowling is the opportunity our sport pro-vides for families to compete together. There are leagues for couples, parents and kids, juniors and seniors, and every family member in between.

The father and son team of RON and DARREN RESTAD are a great example of a fam-ily which bowls together has fun together. Both are having a great time participating TO-GETHER. They only joined the 600 Scratch Trio League so they could bowl together. While they may not realize it now, bowling together will re-sult in memories which each will cherish for a lifetime. I can attest to that, because of the memories I have of my Mom and I as teammates thirty years ago.

TOGETHER the Restads and partner BOB CUNNING-HAM have reloaded their games and are competing at a high level. It looks like they will make the league playoffs as a wildcard team after sev-eral weeks of strong perfor-mances.

I can still remember a re-cent Monday night they took my team behind the woodshed for a 20 to 5 beating.

Just a few weeks ago they outperformed every team in the league, the only trio with everyone scoring a 600 series. Darren led the way with a 640

(179 - 173 - 288), fol-lowed by Cunningham’s 615 (244 - 182 - 189) and Ron’s 608 (193 - 206 - 209). While Ron’s series totaled a few pins less than Darren’s and Bob’s, he was the teams most consis-tent performer with all three of his games not varying by more than a few pins.

Great bowling guys. Hopefully my team, including THERESE LLOYD and BILL LOTSPEICH, will be seeing you in the playoffs. Our thanks to the BOWLING NEWS for recognizing our efforts.

BURBANK — Surely by now, the egg dye has worn off your fingers and Passover celebrations have come and gone. Here at Pickwick, we’re hoping your holidays were all that you expected and more.

Spring signifies a rebirth and renewal of oneself and one’s possessions. I’m sure everyone is getting started with the notorious ‘Spring Cleaning’. Personally it is an on-going process throughout the year. However, I get really serious in the Springtime. This is a great time to go through your bowling bag and replace those items you have used up during the year. Such as powder or resin bags, new shoelaces for your bowling shoes, putting your towel in the wash along with those extra pairs of socks that have been hiding in your bag. It may also include ball cleaner/polish and a new supply of various types of tape. All that having been said, get yourself into the Pro Shop at Pickwick and let Roger or James help you out. They may have sugges-tions on things I’ve left out. Go in, say hi and find out.

sportshot challenge winTORRANCE — The JAT headed to the South Bay and a visit

to Palos Verdes Bowl for the annual JAT SportShot Challenge. The bowlers were ready for a tough grinding condition but it appeared anything but that as the scores went through the roof. Leading qualifying with a 279 start and a 288 finish was Wesley Low Jr. at +279 for his 6-games qualifying. Close on his heels with a trio of 260’s was Oscar Chan at +233. Jerome Jordan Jr. used a pair of 260’s to get to +224 and Ashely Dunn rounded out the two-hundred over set at +203. Low to qualify was Cory Koyanagi at +100.

In the bracket, the top-6 took a bye while the bottom-4 battled in the play-in round to get into the quarterfinals. On the left side of the bracket. 8th-seed Blake McBride coasted past 9th-seed Cory Koyanagi 192-153 and 219-195 while on the right 7th-seed Parker Brooks wowed the crowd with a 300-222 first game, los-ing the second 235-223, but coming back to advance 250-216 over 10th-seed Terrence Robinson.

In the quarterfinals, top-seed Wesley Low Jr. came back into play but was taken out by McBride 193-191, 233-258, and 267-189. 2nd-seed Oscar Chan rejoined the group but he too was taken out in three by Parker Brooks 256-237, 211-240, and 215-188. 4th-seed Ashley Dunn met 5th-seed Keyon Lemus and it was Lemus taking the match in three 201-244, 215-204 and 233-216. 3rd-seeded Jerome Jordan Jr. made short work of 6th-seed Bobby Hornacek 257-247 and 264-178.

In the semifinals, Blake Mc Bride met Keyon Lemus and it was a good match with Lemus winning the first game 223-179, Brooks fighting back with a 198-181 win and Lemus taking the match 245-211 to advance to the finals. In the other match, Park-er Brooks came out striking and took the first game 227-210 but Jerome Jordan Jr. fought back taking game two 266-155. In the rubber game it was Brooks advancing to the final 235-221.

In the Championship Match, Keyon Lemus came out striking taking the first game 227-219 and didn’t look back as he struck his way to the title 253-215. Congratulations Keyon on the big win!

DOWNEY — When league started Monday night, Paul, Ryan, Eric and Mikey checked the leader board to make sure THREADWORKS was really in! They worked hard this latest round and deserved the $$$$.

The final round coming up is a doozy. Scoring is unique to this league. Round winners play each other for double points. Non-winners bowl for regu-lar points. There will be four different oil patterns used (2 weeks each).

Let’s see the ‘‘TOUR” players tackle the Ebonite experience!Five of our players went to the bank with side action dollars. Game One

Bobby Campagnale 238. Game Two Paul Varela 220. Game Three Leonard Ruiz Jr. 237. Financial Advisors Pot Jeff Carr 234. The CLEAN 30 POT was a “must” pay out Monday. Whoever had the most continuous clean frames won.

Dean Sanderson and Bobby Campagnale went thru Game One clean. Then on to Game Two, Bobby chalked up 16 clean frames, but Dean marked on number 17 to win $360.00.

The league would like to thank Dean for providing the Financial Advisors Pot each week. Good reason to bring your game!

Another shout out to Jamie Rovner rolling a 604 this week. Only three oth-ers topped her; Harry Wong 613, Keith Laing 619 and Bobby C. 649.

So far this year seven 300’s have been registered. The ring bearers are Kevin Valmonte. Bobby Campagnale, Ramon Torres, Chauney Merritt, Joe Jimenez, Brian Gonzales and Paul Barraco. Each have multiple 300’s and 800’s.

Keith Laing had a knee knocker 299, and 290’s were claimed by Paul Va-rela, Eric Snow, Jon Diso, Jared Lawrence, and Billy Myers Jr. How close is
