That’s franchise players Ja- son Belmonte of the Los An- geles X and Chris Barnes of the Silver Lake (Calif.) Atom Splitters. The two L.A. teams were reunited with their No. 1 play- ers from the past two years in the 2015 Professional Bowl- ers Assn. League draft, which was held Friday at South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas. Belmonte and Barnes had become the face of their re- spective L.A. teams and it was feared they would be headed elsewhere when the league announced plans to re-draft its players from scratch for its third season. But Belmonte was grabbed by X manager Andrew Cain on the third pick of the first round. Belmonte was widely considered the best player in the league the past two seasons and led his team to the Elias Cup finals in 2014. The X lost in that cham- pionship match to the Atom Splitters, who picked Barnes as the fourth player of the first round. Barnes was drafted by Silver Lake manager Mark Baker. The L.A. selections of Bel- monte and Barnes pretty much squelched an ongoing contro- versy that the PBA’s re-draft would break up the continuity of all the rosters of the league’s eight teams. Overall, four franchise players returned to their old teams. Sean Rash was back with the BROOKLYN STyLES. He was the first play- er drafted. The other returnee was PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber, who was drafted first by the New York City WTT KingPins on the eighth and fi- nal first-round selection. Weber led the KingPins to the Elias Cup title in the league’s first season in 2013. Wes Malott, who was a member of the league cham- pion Atom Splitters in 2014, was the second player selected – taken by the Pittsburgh Jack Rabbits. Dom Barrett was taken fifth – by the Philadelphia Hitmen. Barrett, like Malott and Barnes, was a member of this year’s Atom Splitters. The three Atom Splitter first- round choices were a testa- ment to Silver Lake’s strength in 2014. The Motown Muscle draft- ed sixth and selected E.J. Tack- ett, a member of this year’s X team. Bill O’Neill was the sev- enth player taken – drafted by the Dallas Strikers. The other four players taken by the X were Stuart Williams, Martin Larsen, Pat- rick Allen and Andres Gomez. Gomez will be bowling with the X for his third season. After Barnes, Silver Lake took Mika Koivuniemi, Tom Daugherty, Dick Allen and Craig Nidiffer. The eight teams begin competition March 28-29 at Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine. ESPN will televise all the rounds of the league com- petition tape-delayed. Bowling News is proud to bring you....

IDLE ThOUGhTS. . . This appllies to all the so called unkowns who have been winning pro titles and other major events.“Many a nobody who isn’t known by anybody becomes a somebody and is known by everybody, and everybody tells him they knew him when he was a nobody and they knew he would be a somebody someday.. . . If you are bowling badly, just remember that for every bowler rated a 10, there probably are least 10 ones.. . . Hall of Fame inductions are highly emotional. The late Dick Weber, a veteran of countless speeches, print, radio, and TV interviews, was so filled with pride that he burst into tears of joy when he was inducted into the ABC Hall. He was able to say only a few words, but his action said volumes. . . . The way a lot of bowlers get along on their tournament winnings is with great reluctance.. . . Look for some bright young bowler with a super com-puter to attempt to change bowling’s scoring system. But also look for some bright older person with a computer to block any move to change the scoring way. . . . Back in 1959 Janet Harman had the highest league average in the nation for a woman—197. These days that doesn’t lead many junior leagues. Are the bowlers that much better?. . . If every college that fields a football team would put as much as it costs to support one varsity football player into a bowling program, collegiate bowling would boom.. . . Want a good mental exercise. Try to keep your bowling score in roman numerals.

NOTES TO NOTE

There are two main theories as to how to break bowling slumps. One school feels the answer is to bowl a lot more, and another advises to bowl a lot less. When we asked super coach John Jowdy, he laughed and said, “Both meth-ods work.”

* * * * *It’s great what coaching and experience will do for any bowler. I recall one top pro who gave a speech and told how when he started he took three steps, and hopped like a frog. Many years of experience and untold hours of coaching, now he takes four steps, and hops like a frog.

* * * * * Warning to all bowlers. When you come up with a key shot to win, you can yell, cheer, leap, hi fi, slap your and other hands, and maybe even spike the ball, but just be real careful about praying.

* * * * *The really large silent majority in this country are the bowl-ers who never have rolled a 200 game.

* * * * *A sportsman who owned race horses for many years got interested in bowling, and sponsored some pro bowlers. Asked the difference, he said, “The horses don’t talk back, and I know where they are every night.”

BOB JONES LED DEAF TRAVEL WITH 906, SALAZAR 248 AT GABLE HOUSE BOWL

TORRANCE —In So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League’s stop at Gable House Bowl Bob Jones led for the second time in row, this time with a bigger score 906 from games of 200-238-223-245. Dan Flores who rolled a 300 a couple years ago in this house, had the only other 800, a 821 with 207-221-236 before finishing with a 157.

Four other bowlers crashed in the league’s honor roll for the day, Gorman Low with 169-179-234-195 for 777 and Ed Abakumoff with 770 from 203-212-176-179. Randy Salazar almost hit 100 pins over average with his day’ high game 248 in his 708 series. Connie Marchione made the list for third time in row with his 206.

Top ladies were Celia Salcedo with her day’s high series 639 and Sharon Caldwell with her day’s high game 175. Flores’ Orange County team shot the day’s only 2000 team series, 2050 and Abakumoff’s Riverside hit 569 to replace Eagle Rock’s 568 as the season high team game.

The day’s team action was closely contested by four points. Flores’ Orange County broke its league leading tie with Low’s Hollywood by defeating Mid City 12-8 for 2 points lead. After first 3 games Hollywood led Jones’ S F Valley 8-4 but S F Valley rallied to sweep the 4th game for a 10-10 points tie. Hollywood fell to 2nd place two points behind leader Orange County. Third place Eagle Rock beat Abakumoff’s Riverside 12-8 to gain 2 points behind Hollywood.

Fourth place Riverside is now 11 points behind Eagle Rock, 5th place Mid City is 3.5 points back of Riverside and S F Valley climbed to 1.5 points back of Mid City. This team standing will be exciting set up for change in the position round matches in the league’s next scheduled November 16 visit to Winnetka Bowl (formerly Canoga Park Bowl).

This 54 years old all deaf bowlers traveling league thanks Gable House Bowl for hosting a close match play action and looks forward to an exciting position round action at Winnetka Bowl on Nov. 16 at 1:30 PM.

If you want to learn about old time “ACTION BOWL-ING” ask Bill. He will tell you all about the serious action he has witnessed on the lanes. He remembers hearing of one old timer who had stashed $100,000 in winnings in a false bottomed dresser drawer. That bowler went on to become one of the early PBA stars of the 1960s and 1970s.

While Bill loves bowling, family is even more important. He was married for 56 years (1950-2006) to wife Mary. She was the love his live and he has many wonderful mem-ories of ther times together.

Bill worked for ROHR Industries for thirty years and retired in 1985. He started as an assemblyman and finished his career as a supervisor of assemblymen. ROHR spe-cialized in airplane parts and Bill is familiar with every part necessary to assemble a jet air-craft. Just ask him.

Bill told me he has had a great life. No regrets, nothing to relive. The rest is in God’s hands. Who knows, Bill may make it to 100.

Michaela Buhain showed why she led qualifying getting lined up and taking the first match against Matt Alford 245-225. Buhain kept on rolling as she took down the top-seed Julian Zavala and struck her way to her second JAT Farm Club ti-tle and first singles title. Con-gratulations Michaela!

In the Open Division, strikes were plentiful as the lanes opened up more and more as play went on. Joe Grondin took the qualifying lead at +228 for his 6 games including a 279 finish to lock in the top-seed. Tyler Salverda was in his comfort zone play-ing up the boards to a +172 while Jerome Jordan Jr. was 3rd just one pin back at +171. Wesley Low Jr. rounded out the triple-digit plus club at +146. Low-to-qualify was Ashley Dunn at +81. Scoring highlights included Grondin 279-256-248-246, Salverda 258-248-233, Low Jr. 256-250-246-233, Jordan Jr. 244-238-233-231, Ashley Dunn 258, Terrence Robinson 246, Patrick Rodriguez 245-233, Brandon Wanders 243, and Andrew Fung 230.

In the bracket, the top-6 ad-vanced with the top-2 drawing a bye. 6th seed Ashely Dunn met 3rd seed Jerome Jordan Jr. and he needed all three to get by Ashley 248-278, 238-201 and 233-169. 4th seed Wesley Low Jr. met first-time bowler Andrew Fung and it was a three game match with Low advancing 195-202, 23-223 and 248-195. Fung had only one game under 200 the entire day. In the semifinals, the top-2 came back into play and Tyler Salverda took out Jordan Jr. in two 226-183 and 224-212 to advance to the fi-nals. On the other side, Low Jr. continued to be red-hot sweeping past top-seed Joe Grondin 236-176 and 227-171 to take on Salverda. In the fi-nals, it was all Wesley Low Jr. taking game one 210-184 and game two 247-223 for the title. Congratulations Wesley!

BURBANK — While this past weekend was a killer physically, it was also an absolute joy. For the first time in several years, Pickwick was represented by a team at the NLAC City Championship Tournament! We also had four Doubles teams in competition. The bowlers were a mix of newbies to tournaments and seasoned tournament play-ers. A shout out to all the parents and coaches that came to cheer and support our young bowlers. You are the rea-son these kids are such wonderful humans and pretty good bowlers too! I salute them and you!

I was told a story I would like to share with you. I’m not sure if it’s a testament to karma or just how small the world of bowling can be. This is a true story, one of those ‘believe it or nots’.

A young man growing up in Texas was an avid bowler in his high school years. He was left handed and his favorite ball was drilled in a very special way just for him. He was a good bowler and dedicated to his sport until one day his ball was stolen. His heart was broken from the loss of his dearest ball. He grew into a fine man and moved up in his life eventually coming to California to live. Thirty years later and not currently bowling, he happened into a bowling center one day, bowling with friends for fun, when to his amazement and surprise, he saw his beloved ball grinning at him from the house ball rack. He was overwhelmed with joy and astonishment at the same time! Thirty years and several states away from when it was last seen! Karma? Coincidence? Destiny? You tell me.

I am told this man has kept that ball on his office desk as a trophy of sorts, though he doesn’t bowl today due to health issues. Incredible, right? I warned you. Sat. 11 a.m to 5 p.m.LAKE FOREST — The JAT started off the 2014-15 PBA

Challenge last event at Forest Lanes with the bowlers taking on the Bear oil pattern. Scoring was low on the tight pattern as the bowlers struggled for the pocket. Wesley Low Jr. had enough carry to post a perfect 300 game in qualifying to make him the lone bowler to qualify plus.

In the Farm Club, Julian Zavala led qualifying at -45 for his 5 including a 252 in game 3. Michael Ma made his Farm Club return qualifying 2nd at -101 with Michaela Buhain, Michael Conti and Kylie Shishima close on his heels. Low to qualify was Shavon Love at -281. Only two 200 games were bowled in qualifying both by Zavala 252 and 202.

In match play, scoring stayed low and Michaela Buhain took the lead by going 4-1 to get to -100. Zavala held onto the 2-spot with a 3-2 record. Michael Ma took the last rolloff spot with a 3-2 record at -145. In the rolloff, Julian Zaval snuck by the semifinal match 187-186 over Michael Ma to advance to the Championship Match. DOWNEY — If only we all could be so gifted… but accord-ing to Frank, there is only one! Zack “Metaphysical” Jellsey was mentally in tune last night, and apparently he wanted to put a beat down on The Pro Approach, as he rolled his way to 648 to team with Jon Diso’s 624 to post the league’s Team High Series. League leader Billy Myers Jr. 246/712 & Frank Barefoot Jr. also managed a 603 in the losing effort as Forest Lanes nearly swept, winning 4-1. Power House Video Games swept their way into a first place tie as Val Wise 244/615 shut the door on Bowlium, who as a team struggled mightily in week 2, their high game being 202. Pino’s Pizza got a huge break in the 10th of game 3, enabling them to pull out Team Total by 3 pins and end with a 4-1 win over CASAMIGO’S Tequila. Leonard Ruiz Jr. 258/624 led the win-ners, while fellow anchorman Vernon Adams managed 240/624 & Joe Jimenez 593 in a losing effort. DV8 had another strong showing, sweeping past Buddy “Lone Ranger” Lucas & Los Al-tos Trophies. Buddy didn’t shoot 800, but did manage 220+ each game for 671, while his teammates went plus one time, 202. Ash-kan Tahvildaran 628 & Jeff Carr 265/624 led the way for DV8. Super Sub Memo Rosales powered his way to 244/653 to lead Tifco Industries to a come from behind 4-1 win over J.A.T. who were led by DeeRonn Booker’s 588.

Keystone Lanes got back to their winning ways taking down Alhambra Coin Center 4 to 1, losing only game 3 by 15 pins. That win for Alhambra came courteous of T.J. Abahazy and his 258/590. Herbert Jones 633 & Arnold Cheesman 594 paved the way for the Keystone victory. Linder Insurance overcame a tough 9 pin loss in game 1 to come roaring back for a 4-1 win over American Harvest Vodka. Anthony Santos 232/621 was the only one able to crack the code on 23-24. Threadworks stitched up their wounds from week 1 and swept past the struggling GJC Ser-

vices. Threadworks got strong efforts from Kevin Peterson 620 & Eric Snow 606 to lead the sweep. Blizz Yogurt cleared the air after a very sour 586 Team Game 1, shooting the league’s high team game in #2 (860) to steam roll their way to a 4-1 win over Herzog Insurance. Greg Neuer flipped a switch for the winners, going 147-245-234 for 626.

In a shocking match up of winless teams it was Erickson Foods over SYSCO 4 games to 1. Raul “Spanky” Rosales 611 & Brian Main 609 led the way to a near sweep, but Charlie Kinstler 604 came up with a key double in the 10th of game 2 to pull out that win by 13 pins. Erickson then put together four games of 209 or more to shoot 849 in Game 3 & the league’s 2nd high Team Series. Cook’s Bowling Supply upped their game considerably after a major struggle in week 1, and managed to pull out a win in Game 2, but remain at the bottom in the bye spot.

Sidepot winners were Game 1 Leonard Ruiz Jr. 258 Game 2 Vernon Adams 240 and 3rd Game Super Pot went to Jeff Carr and his 265 effort. The Financial Advisor’s 2nd game pot went to Billy Myers Jr. with his 246 ($240) to snap off Greg Neuer 245 who had to settle for 2nd and $100.

As predicted, no team managed to go 10-0, but two teams tied at 9-1 will make for a great match next week as both teams boast bowlers who have mastered this 2nd round shot. There are 12 teams within 4 games of the Round 2 lead, and since we bowl by position each and every week, look for the standings to have lots of movement in the coming weeks. We did see our first 700 series this week, as Billy Myers Jr. topped that mark by 12. It’s November now people, it’s bowling season in full effect so come down and see all the action next Monday at Del Rios Lanes.
