P. J. HAGGERTY WINS THIRD DON GLOVER MASTERS TITLE

by Bette Addington BAKERSFIELD — The seventh annual Don Glover Masters

Scratch Tournament drew a field of 45 entrants the weekend of October 5 & 6 at Regency Bowling Center. This all-wood center had just had the lanes re-coated and new for the event this year, it switched from using the unique Glover oil pattern to the Bour-bon Street pattern. This year’s event had just about everything for a spectator to keep the momentum going! To start off with, all four past Glover champions came to compete—Scott Norton, P.J. Haggerty, Jeff Frankos and Eddie VanDaniker, Jr. And, all four of them did not disappoint as they all made it into the Top 20 Semi-Finals! And, all four of them placed in the tournament!!

But the two qualifying squads on Saturday had their mo-ments. We had two bowlers pick up the 7-10 split and both were Bakersfield bowlers—Diz Francisco and Jess Stayrook (Dave Wodka also picked it up during Sunday morning’s Match Play Finals). Squad B had a 300 game shot for the first game by Mike DeVaney. Excitement was brewing for the Top 20 Semi-Finals that took place Saturday after Squad B finished up. Paul Bober, who recently moved to Santa Monica from Morton Grove, IL, posted consistently high games that landed him the number one spot for the Sunday’s Top 10 Match Play Finals averaging 242 for 6 games. Carlie Medina III was the only Bakersfield bowler to make the Top 10, and he secured the number two spot averag-ing 239, just twenty pins below Bober. Former Glover Cham-pion, Scott Norton, just missed making the Top 10 and placed 11th at +93.

Sunday morning’s Top Ten had five EBI ball staff members in the mix. Leading the Match Play competition, Paul Bober for C300, Dave Wodka and Steve Smith representing Ebonite, Keith Laing for Hammer, and Jeff Frankos also for C300. The nine games of Match Play had Bakersfield’s Carlie Medina III take over the number one position after first game after rolling a nice 268 game. Medina III was the only left-hander in the Top 10. He lost his next game and dropped from leading to fourth at which time P.J. Haggerty and Bobby Campagnale took over the top two spots as they were consistently winning their matches. But then, defending Glover Champion, Eddie VanDaniker, Jr., shot a 277 after five game and took over the top spot and held that top spot through the nine games. The tenth game was a position round which matched VanDaniker, Jr. (3737) against P. J. Haggerty (3685) which Haggerty won with the highest game of the day, a 288.

The Top Five were then set for the Roll-Off. The fifth seed, Andrew Graff, who made an impressive run to secure making it into the roll-off, was first up against fourth seed, Carlie Medina III. Medina commanded the match and won 256-177. Next up, Medina took on third seed Bobby Campagnale, who was the only two-handed bowler in the tournament. This match had Campag-nale start strong with a five bagger and Medina struggling after opening in the fifth, but Medina came back with four strikes to be within 10 pins. Medina barely won 214-212 with Campagnale getting a split in the tenth. Medina then faced second seed, Eddie VanDaniker, Jr. and their match was close until Medina opened in the ninth frame which cost him the match 203-245.

The final match-up was between 2012 defending Glover champion, VanDaniker, Jr., and top seed and two-time (2007 & 2011) Glover champion, P.J. Haggerty. Haggerty wasted no time striking in the front six frames. VanDaniker, Jr., started with an open but couldn’t stay with the pace Haggerty set and ended up losing 172-258.

P. J. Haggerty, who was accompanied by wife, Janay, was thrilled to again win this title and would like to thank “Storm, Roto Grip, KT Tape and Vise Inserts for their great products.” Haggerty used the Defiant Soul, Deranged and Totally Defiant balls at this event.

50 SPLITSIn one league

Session!by Frank Weiler

REDLANDS — I don’t know if anyone tracks the number of splits rolled in certi-fied league play but I do know that 50 splits by two foursomes is a lot. That’s the number of splits left by two teams in Em-pire Bowl’s Senior Laughlin League recently.

While all eight bowlers on lanes 9-10 contributed at least five splits the leader for the day was VONI PARKER with eight.

As individuals go, the most splits I’ve seen by one bowler for three league games is fifteen. I saw STELLA CE-DANO do it about five years ago and she had some choice words for the pins. Last week ROSE RUDH had fourteen in the Senior Laughlin League. Thank you BOWLING NEWS for supporting Citrus Belt bowlers.

NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWS by Connie Marchione

FLORES 264/900, FISSER 255/897 TOP DEAF TRAVEL AT DEL RIO MID CITY HITS TEAM HIGH GAME 640, RIVERSIDE HIGH TEAM SERIES 2256DOWNEY — Chalk up two in row for Dan Flores in leading the Southern California Deaf

Traveling League’s 8 bowlers honor roll list in the latest stop at high scoring Del Rio Lanes. Flores’ day’s high series 900 with games of 213-264-191-232 nipped Mark Fisser’s 897 by 3 pins. Fisser had games of 224-226-255-192 in his 897, which is 3 pins shy of his 2nd 900.

Also Flores’ day’s high game 264 made with 8 strikes in row, stopped by a pocket hit 7-10 pins is 3 pins short of Fisser’s season high game 267 made in his season high series 972 both in the season opener. Anyway Flores’ 264 replaces his own 256 made in the season opener as the season high game.

Ed Abakumoff got his first 800 of this new season with 860 from 245-213-193-203. Ed’s team-mate Gorman Low missed as the day’s 4th 800 by 9 pins with his 791 from 231-202-181-177. Ditto for Jeff Stansell who missed as the 5th with his 780 when after first three 164-204-255 he slumped to a 157. His 255 had a front 7 strikes in row.

The rest on the roll list were Stansell’s teammate Andy Lorenzo with (206-211) 758, Bob Jones starting good with 411 but finished with a 746 and Jones’ teammate 90 years young Connie Mar-chione closed with a 210 for 727. The women’s highlight is Anita Lorenzo who replaced her season high game 184 with her new 194.

The league averaged season high 175 plus per bowler at the high scoring Del Rio Lanes with new season high team game and team series. In the first game Riverside with Low’s 231 and Aba-kumoff’s 245 created new season team high 594 replacing Anaheim’s 571. But in the 2nd game Mid City trio of Lorenzo 206, Paul Taffolla 190 and Stansell 204 broke the 600 barrier for the first time this season. In the third game Mid City Trios got hotter with Lorenzo’s 211, Taffolla’s 174 and Stansell’s 255 for new high 640. Mid City replaced Anaheim’s season high team series of 2155 with 2224 and in turn was replaced by Riverside’s 2256.

Fisser’s Anaheim moved from 3rd to first place with a 16-4 win over OC County. Former first place Jones’ Eagle Rock lost to 2nd place Stansell’s Mid City 14-6 and dropped from first to 3rd place. Mid City retains 2nd place 1 point behind Anaheim and two points ahead of Eagle Rock. Abakumoff’s Riverside a 14.5-5.5 winner over Flore’s S. F. Valley swapped 4th and 5th placed.

The League thanks Del Rio Lanes staff and management for the excellent scoring conditions. With time off for our senior bowlers to bowl in the 17th annual Deaf Senior Bowlers of America October 15-17 in Las Vegas, the next center on schedule is Brunswick Covina Bowl at 11:00 AM on October 20.

‘We’ve Got Balls’

LOS ANGELES — Since its debut at the Newport Beach Film Festival on April 29 of this year, “We’ve Got Balls,” a quirky family-friendly com-edy, continues to be named an official selection of other festi-vals and a festival award win-ner. According to Cherie Kerr, the writer/director of the 93-minute comedy, the All Sports L.A. Film Festival has tapped it to screen in competition. The festival begins Friday, Novem-ber 8, 2013, and ends with an awards banquet on Monday, November 11, 2013.

This marks the fourth festi-val appearance in five months for “We’ve Got Balls,” which to date has won four awards including “Best Comedy” and “Best Comedy – Feature” at the Movieville International Film Festival and the Action on Film International Film Festival (AOF), respectively. It also won “Outstanding Cast Performance” at AOF and Kerr was named “Filmmaker of the Year” there, as well.

“We’ve Got Balls” is a quirky, family-friendly com-edy set in the fictional town of Fountain Springs where its 52 residents wind up in a “whacked-out bowling show-down,” to save the town’s only centerpiece (Fountain Bowl). The bowl is slated for destruc-tion by a greedy land devel-oper who intends to build a gambling casino on the land on which it sits.

The film will screen at the landmark El Portal Theater at 5269 Lankershim Boulevard in the heart of North Hollywood (Los Angeles, Calif. 91601). Tickets may be purchased at http://allsportslafilmfest.com.

For more information on “We’ve Got Balls,” including a press kit, photos, and inter-view opportunities please call 714 550-9900. Those inter-ested in getting a sneak peak at “We’ve Got Balls” may view the film’s trailer by visiting: www.wevegotballsmovie.com or contact Ree-invent Films at 714 550-9900.

onship. All five of the championship tournaments will be televised by ESPN. First prize in each animal pattern event is $20,000; first prize in the PBA World Championship is $50,000.

Also returning to the World Series schedule will be the World Tenpin Bowling Association’s World Bowling Tour Men’s and Women’s Finals, presented by the PBA. The top three men and the top three women, based upon a rolling two-year points competition in WBT events held around the world, will bowl in a three-player stepladder finals. Each champion will win $20,000.

New to the World Series program will be a PBA50 Finals and a PBA Regional Players Invita-tional Finals, which will be contested on Nov. 3. The PBA50 Finals will feature the PBA50 Tour’s three top point-earners (PBA Hall of Famers Walter Ray Williams Jr., Amleto Monacelli and Pete Weber) in a stepladder final with a $10,000 top prize at stake. The players will be seeded based on their rankings in the 2013 PBA50 competition points list. No. 2 Monacelli will bowl No. 3 Weber in the first match, with the winner advancing to meet No. 1 Williams.

The PBA RPI Finals will feature six RPI champions representing the PBA’s East, South, Cen-tral, Midwest, Southwest and combined West/Northwest Regions. RPI finalists will be seeded for television based upon their 28-game qualifying totals in the four animal pattern events. Players who rank second, fourth and sixth will bowl the opening match; players who rank first, third and fifth will bowl the second match. The two winners will then bowl for a $6,000 first prize and a berth in the 2014 PBA Tournament of Champions.

Also new to the WSOB V program will be a special High 5 Gear PBA League Challenge Match: USA vs. The World that will kick off the World Series on Friday, Oct. 25, and provide Xtra Frame subscribers with a preview of the PBA League’s new singles, doubles, trio and team format that will debut in late January. The Challenge Match also will be available to Xtra Frame non-subscribers for a special one-time pay-per-view cost of $5. To subscribe to Xtra Frame, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame link.

WSOB V will conclude with three days of ESPN television finals, Nov. 1-3, on special lanes installed in South Point’s Exhibition Hall B. Tickets for all television events are available through PBA’s official website, pba.com, and at the control counter at South Point Bowling Center.

The five PBA Tour events will have a major bearing on the 2012-13 Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year and Harry Golden Rookie of the Year races, along with the George Young Memorial High Average Award and Harry Smith Point Leader Award races. Heading into the World Series, Jason Belmonte is the leading contender for Player of the Year honors, but he’s being chased by Mika Koivuniemi, Sean Rash, Wes Malott, Tommy Jones, Scott Norton and Pete Weber.

The final 2012-13 competition points standings will determine eligibility for the 2014 PBA League Draft, which will be held in South Point Bowling Center (and webcast live on Xtra Frame) on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. PT. All eight PBA League managers will draft one additional player for their 2014 rosters. The PBA League begins its second season of competition in late January at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich.

Throughout the World Series, PBA fans around the world will be able to follow all qualifying and match play rounds live on Xtra Frame, and by tracking “live scoring” on pba.com. For a com-plete roster of players, click here: http://www.pba.com/Rosters/Details/1955. One competitor fans will be watching with special interest is NFL all-star wide receiver and PBA League owner Terrell Owens, who will make his PBA debut in the World Series.

If all of these activities aren’t enough, there also will be optional PBA All-Regions Singles and PBA West Region Member/Non-Member Doubles tournaments over the Nov. 1-3 weekend. And the Teen Masters Grand Championship will be decided on the television lanes in South Point’s Exhibition Hall B on Friday, Nov. 1.

LAKEWOOD — Popular CAL BOWL hosted our event this weekend and surprised everyone with a very chal-lenging lane condition never before seen in any ABTA event. We had 171 entries with 40 bowlers advancing to semi finals, all guaranteed to cash. Cut scores were (+74) for the men and (+51) for the women. Super Seniors added were Vic Paolucci (+60) and Romy Ca-jucom (+58) for the men, and Wendy Soo Hoo +42 for the women.

High qualifiers for the weekend were Ken Seiple Sr. +163 for the men and Jean Co-lian +101 for the women. They each get a paid entry to a fu-ture ABTA regular event. Top qualifier gets the privilege of drawing for the Match Series and Ken drew 694. The tough shot made this high score dif-ficult to match so Match Series MAXED at $5,000 carries over to Bowlium next weekend.

Will Samson took the top two spots in our OPTIONAL DOUBLES. #1 with Don Quitangon with their 1426 for

$90 and #2 with Steve Brode with 1413 for $80. Doubles paid out 15 places for a total of $770 with a low to cash score of 1330.

Big Bill Warren +144 was TOP SEED amongst the 40 semi final qualifiers. Galdino Chavez followed with +140. Galdino with at out the first round while Bill chills as he waits for the title match. Top seed gets the honor of drawing for Match Game and Bill drew the unmatched 283 game. Our Match Game fund of $3,560 carries over to next weekend and is estimated to max at $5,000. Our optional 3-6-9 MAXED at $3,000 also carries over as William Samson wins the $50 consolation prize.

Cut scores for the top 16 Match Play Finals were +78 for the men and +66 for the women. Eliminated after the first round and getting $100 each were Don Quitangon, Cecilia Lung, Jack Trongale, Benjamin Chung, Kenny Kwan and Romy Cajucom. Rachel Macias took home $60 for her reduced entry. Placing

6th-9th after the second round were Tri Vo, Will Samson and Jojo Barcelona for $105, and Leonard Garcia (reduced entry ) for $63. For our HORSE pick finalists, payouts were $34 for Adam McKenzie, $44 for sec-ond seed Galdino Chavez, $68 for Sol Cericos, and a whop-ping $206 for Sandy Rosen-blum.

Adam couldn’t seem to find his game nor catch a break and with only four marks, his 157 game lost to Galdino’s 204. Sandy and Sol showed a good and exciting match. Sol start-ed strong but a couple of bad breaks in the middle and he ended on shaky ground even though he punched out in the 10th. With Sandy’s double in the 8th and 9th, a spare in the 10th guarantees her win. Spec-tators who had her as their “horse” were almost celebrat-ing:;=) Bad luck? Bad Break? Nerves or Jinx? cus and determination, almost converted the big split. Sandy finished at 206 against Sol’s 217. At 4th and 5th respective-ly were Adam McKenzie and Sandy Rosenblum for $110 each. It’s now between Sol Cericos and Galdino Chavez. Galdino’s ham bone in the first four frames made up for his misses in the 6th & 7th frames. Sol had a solid clean game but he needed to string in order to bring down Galdino. Sol finished 3rd for $200 with his 229 game. Advancing to the title match with his 246 game is this week’s HORSE winner $44- Galdino Chavez.

Top seed Bill Warren met challenger Galdino Chavez at the top. Bill started with a strike but it was strike or miss until his double on the 8th &

9th frames. On the other hand, Galdino who’s still in high spirits after winning his last three matches, was shooting a clean game and even con-verted the 5-7 split handed to him in the 5th frame. By the 10th frame, he needed only 8 or better to secure the title. A huge grin spread across his face when he downed 9 pins on his first ball on the 10th. Galdino finished the game with 239 earning him his 2nd ABTA Title worth $2,700 which includes $1,700 from the optional Cash & Carry on top of the guaranteed $1,000 prize fund .Likeable Bill War-ren placed second with his 190 game and took home $500.

Two Time ABTA Title holder Galdino Chavez is from Fontana. A ready smile on his face, used an old favorite, his Classic Storm Dimension to tackle this weekend’s lane con-dition. Along with his family - wife Sylvia, sons Gustavo and Galdino, and daughters Jasmin and Sylvia, Gustavo thanks GOD above all else for the blessings. He enjoys bowling and gives credit to his nephew, Tomas Chavez for introducing the sport. Galdino also thanks good friend Emilio Flores, our hard working ABTA Staff and the rest of the ABTA bowlers who supported and cheered.

Runnerup Bill Warren is from Long Beach and he used his Storm Frantic and Mar-vel-S drilled by ABTA member Chuck Weeks. He dedicates this win to his kids - Casey, Nico and Stephen. He extends his thanks to his coach, Sher-man Joseph from Del Rio and to Chuck Weeks who takes care of his equipment.

Third place winner Sol Cericos is from Arcadia and used his Storm Marvel-S drilled by Memo at Apex Pro Shop Chaparral/ Friendly Hills He, long time ABTA support-er, thanks his family and the ABTA Staff for support.

Victor Mejia is this week’s winner of a new bowling ball from our sponsor, Global 900. For our RAFFLE ticket draw-ing: Alan Aguilar, Arnold Agoncillo and LUCKY GUY Steve Brode each got $10 ABTA Brackets; Jack Tron-gale and Cecilia Lung each got an ABTA Shirt; and ABTA Regular Entry winners were Ben Bagaoisan, Sun Sundara and Cezar Marcella.

ABTA Bowlers took home $17,075 in cash and prizes this weekend! Your satisfaction is our pride and having the best payout ratio on our track re-cord is our way to show all our loyal ABTA bowlers our ap-preciation. Thank you for your continued support.

REMEMBERING ROSE VIGIL

by Joy McGregorORANGE COUNTY —

Rose Vigil joined the Orange County Women’s Bowling As-sociation in 1975 as a director. In 1978 she was elected to the valued Treasurer spot, taking over from retiring Helen Bel-lows. Rose was in her ele-ment and loving numbers, she excelled! At the 1986 WIBC national convention and tour-nament hosted by Orange County, Rose was the audi-tor for all the scores bowled. She and her committee did an outstanding job and she was personally praised by WIBC president, Helen Baker.

Rose was a delegate to many state and national con-ventions over her tenure on the Orange County WBA board. Rose and president of the OCWBA, Ramona Clark, were travelling companions and frequent roommates on these “fun” trips. Ramona has many “stories” of some of their adventurers. “Rosebud”, as she was affectionately known was a feisty little gal, with two obvious passions: bowling and gambing (not necessarily in that order). At any of the convention cities with a casino close by, you always knew where you could find Rose, af-ter her shifts were completed, sitting and ‘always’ winning at a poker machine!

Rose was a good bowler, an excellent poker player and a diligent and hard working member of the board. Ramo-na tells us she was dedicated and always worked more than her share of shifts. “I could always depend on her”, says Ramona.

One thing I remember about Rose is at every conven-tion/tournament we travelled to, if Rose had not bowled well she’d say, “Well, this is my last year, don’t count me in next year.” Well, the next year would roll around and guess what? Yep, there was Rose standing at the front of the line. No one ever muttered a word, we’d just chuckle and say, “That’s our Rose”!

Rose was married to a Navy man and they had 3 chil-dren. Her husband and two sons preceded her in death. She is survived by her daugh-ter, Diane.

A memorial, “Celebra-tion of Life” luncheon was held Sept.10th to honor two past board members and good friends, Ginny Snodgrass and Rose. These two were the best of friends. Ironically, they passed away a week apart.

This luncheon was attend-ed by many of their friends and many pictures and a few readings were presented. A few tears were shed but main-ly many laughs were remem-brances of these two admired ladies we all took away with us.

God bless you Rose and Ginny. You will be greatly missed and always remem-bered....

bVl honored as 2013 TOP-RATED NONPROFIT

New GreatNonprofits.org Award is Based on Positive Online ReviewsMETROPOLITAN AREA WASHINGTON D.C., – BVL an-

nounced today that it has been honored with a prestigious 2013 Top-Rated Award by GreatNonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews about nonprofit organizations.

“We are excited to be named a Top-Rated 2013 Nonprofit,” says BVL Board Chair Darlene Baker. “We are proud of our accomplishments this year, including recreation grants to VA Medical Centers, programs for wounded warriors at Walter Reed National Medical Center, and our support of the VA national vet-eran’s competitions.”

The Top-Rated Nonprofit award was based on the large num-ber of positive reviews that BVL received – reviews written by volunteers, donors and clients. People posted their personal ex-perience with the nonprofit, for example one person wrote, “I will give to BVL in time and money every year. There is nothing more satisfying than giving an amount to a cause and knowing that it actually gets to those you intended it for. I have actually given the grants to our State Vet Hospitals, spent some time with the vets, and experienced the joy they feel being remembered, supported and honored. Donors should give freely as they are assured that the donation goes directly to the vets.”

To read the complete list of reviews, visit http://greatnonprof-its.org/org/bvl-fund-inc

While the Top-Rated Awards run through the end of October, BVL was part of the inaugural group to qualify for the year.

“Savvy donors want to see the impact of their donations more

than ever,” said Perla Ni, CEO of GreatNonprofits, “People with direct experience with BVL have voted that the orga-nization is making a real dif-ference.”

Being on the Top-Rated list gives donors and volunteers more confidence that this is a credible organization. The reviews by volunteers, clients and other donors show the on-the-ground results of this non-profit. This award is a form of recognition by the community. BVL provides recreational and therapeutic programs and services to boost morale and speed recuperation of Amer-ica’s active duty and veteran service men and women na-tionwide. BVL is located in Metropolitan Washington, D.C..

10th annual Phone Card Drive Kicks Off

29 PALMS — In the first years of our Phone Cards for the Troops charity we longed for a word from someone who received one of our cards. It finally became clear that the wives of the troops serving were the ones who began sending us thank you notes. We now have received many and in one instance a note from the Byrum children saying “Thank you for the phone cards so my dad can call us. I miss him a lot.” Axel Byrum. All of the notes express heartfelt thanks for the opportunity to talk to their loved ones. We do make a difference.

We send our cards through the 29 Palms AFYMCA where packages are sent to the troops and our cards – enclosed in an envelope with our identity information are included. Carla Marie Wie-dler said, “I just want to say thank you for your donation of the phone cards. Luckily, I have received one and I am highly looking forward to hearing my Marine’s voice and that is because of you. I’m stationed here in 29 Palms and I have told my friends about your wonderful phone cards that AFYMCA is distributing. Thank you to everyone involved for your time and effort, it surely is not wasted! There is not a price tag you can put on what you are doing for the military members who receive these. So thankful.”

They all give thanks for helping their families stay in touch. The troops endeavor has raised nearly $60,000 for the phone cards we send. We started out with a small donation of $500 and last year it was over $8,000! You can donate in memory or in honor of someone or just to support our cause. We are grateful to the CUSBC BVL program and the Camellia City 500 club and the Bowl-ing Proprietors of Southern California for their generous donations each year.

If you know of someone who is deployed and would like a card sent directly to them just let us know. Send the information to Chairman Wendy Boswell, 3118 Lake Mead Court, Chico, CA 95973-5810. Direct donations go to CBW Treasurer Tina Martin, 57 Shields Lane, Novato, CA 94947-3877.

Deadline for donations is December 31, and the cards are sent to arrive for Valentine’s Day – 2014. All donors will be put in a pool and a lucky person will be drawn to receive a Tony Reyes commemorative bowling ball!

Koivuniemi Wins Columbia 300 Vienna open for 12th Pba Tour Title

PBA Player of the Year, World Bowling Tour races get tighter heading into Thailand event VIENNA, Austria – The 2012-13 Professional Bowlers Association Player of the Year race got

even more interesting Sunday when Mika Koivuniemi, a Finnish native now living in Hartland, Mich., won his third PBA International Tour title of the season, defeating fellow Finn Pasi Uotila, 258-237, in the title match of the Columbia 300 Vienna Open at Plus Bowling Center.

With his win, Koivuniemi became the first PBA Tour player to win three titles – all on foreign soil – during the 2012-13 season. He previously won the Round1 Japan Cup followed by the Qatar Open in back-to-back World Tenpin Bowling Association/PBA International Tour events in Decem-ber 2012. Jason Belmonte, Australia (Bear Open and USBC Masters) and Scott Norton, Mission Viejo, Calif. (Chameleon Open and Earl Anthony PBA Players Championship), are the only other multiple title winners this season with two each.

Koivuniemi, who owns 12 PBA Tour titles, also moved into second place in the WTBA’s World Bowling Tour men’s points standings and won a 7,000 Euro first prize (est. US$9,500) to take the 2012-13 PBA Tour earnings lead with $172,312 (roughly $3,500 ahead of Belmonte).

The Vienna Open was the next-to-last World Bowling Tour qualifying event heading into the PBA World Series of Bowling. With his victory, Koivuniemi earned 50 WBT points and now ranks second with 534 points, trailing leader Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., who has 563 points after picking up 23 points for his seventh-place finish in Vienna. Trailing Koivuniemi and Rash on the men’s points list are Mike Fagan of Fort Worth, Texas (506); Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C. (494); Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas (491), and Belmonte (477).

The top three men and top three women on the WBT’s rolling two-year competition points list will earn berths in the WBT Finals presented by the PBA, which will be held on Nov. 3 as the final event on the PBA World Series of Bowling V program. The top three WBT women have clinched berths. Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., is the leader with 647 points followed by Liz Johnson, Cheek-towaga, N.Y. (555) and Missy Parkin, Laguna Hills, Calif. (539).

The final WTBA/PBA International Tour tournament and final WBT qualifying event leading into the PBA World Series of Bowling V will be the WBT Thailand which will be held Oct. 14-21 at Bul-O Paragon in Bangkok, Thailand. WBT points at stake begin at 50, 40, 35, 30 and 25 for the top five players, respectively, with lesser points awarded based upon where players finish.

WSOB V is set for Oct. 25-Nov. 3 at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas. The WBT Men’s and Women’s Finals will be held on Nov. 3. Finalists in each gender division will bowl for $20,000, $10,000 and $5,000 prizes.

Seven PBA Tour titles remain to be decided during the 2012-13 season: the WBT Thailand, four animal pattern championships (Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon and Scorpion) plus the PBA World Championship during WSOB V, and the season-ending Round1 Japan Cup in Tokyo.

Bowling News is proud to bring you....

Racing jockeys have the right to wear advertisements and logos on their uniforms.

Why not?Few, if any sports, don’t have some form of commercial

advertising on their clothing, equipment, or strategically placed signage of all sorts.

I don’t know if bowling was the first, but it was an early approver of the idea, going back to the 1900s and before. In the booming days of bowling during the major part of the 20th century, bowling shirts were akin to walking billboards. The earliest advertisers were beer, cigars, bowling equip-ment, bowling centers, banks, amusement centers, and many an industrial organization, as well as a good sprin-kling of religious organizations.

But what seemed natural in bowling was viewed with scorn and deprecating smiles by too many outside of the game.

That didn’t stop the bowlers and their sponsors. When there were more than 10 million league bowlers, almost all had bowling shrts and the better teams also had slacks, and often jackets to match. Most of the sponsors were local—restaurants and bars, gas stations, barber shops and beauty salons, banks, insurance agencies, all types of stores, and even politicians, but many of the top national firms also joined as sponsors. For a comparatively small sum, money for league entry fees and shirts, a sponsor could have advertising for 36 weeks and five or six bowlers and their families boosting a product or service by way of mouth.

These days bowling shirts in low average or regular house leagues are mostly gone—and in some leagues there are more bowlers wearing hats than bowling shirts.

There were a number of bowling apparel companies that gave bonus prizes for bowlers who rolled a 300 game while wearing a shirt, belt, skirt or slacks of a certain firm. The prizes ranged from $100 to $1,000, mostly in savings bonds. That wouldn’t be a good idea in this time of high scores.

Teams went out of their way to come up with beauti-ful, and often garish shirt designs. Embroidery was an ac-cepted art and could be costly so at times the writng on the back cost more than the shirts.

The International Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum has a classic collection of shirts spanning almost a centrury of male and female uniforms of all sorts.

When the PBA first started its tour it was anything goes and bowlers could wear any kind of shirt advertising any product. On TV only the bowler’s name, very huge, was allowed. The PBA then went to no names on shirts and a bowler, according to his finish, was allowed to choose from a variety of colors, and those following had to choose dif-ferent colors.

For a time Ernie Schlegel and Goupy Troup were the kings of surprise uniforms, from tux styled outfits to those with each leg adorned with a different color.

It all settled down and most will agree that bowlers are dressed neat and colorful these days. The big laugh is that almost every sport was critical of bowling because of bowl-ing shirts with names and now just about every sport has adopted the same practice.

They should have known. Back in the 1890s era the top teams wore stiff starched, long sleeved shirts and ties when they competed in important matches. Anyone who went through that can’t be all bad.

Where are all those millions of shirts now? Few are still being used, some rest in closets and attics, but most were sent to needy people around the world when for decades clothing drives concentrated on them.

GEORGE ANDREWSaMerIcan hero

by Frank WeilerREDLANDS — George

Andrews turned 89 years old recently and celebrated on the lanes with a nice 200 game. He has been bowling since 1941 when he worked as a pin boy at the extinct Orange Street Lanes. He has enjoyed bowling ever since.

George may not be related to the singing ANDREWS SISTERS but his two sisters, Alice and Betty, have always enjoyed bowling. I suspect George was instrumental in their becoming bowlers.

Mr. Andrews is in great shape for someone about to complete his ninth decade of life. Still limber and loose George averages about 180 and regularly rolls 200 games. His best years were 1999 and 2000 when he averaged 196.

His career highs are 748 in 1992 and a 298 that same year.

The bigger story though is that GEORGE IS A REAL AMERICAN HERO. As a member of the “Greatest Gen-eration” George endured the Great Depression and fought in World War II.

George graduated from Redlands High School in 1942 and immediately enlisted in the US Army, serving in the Pacific from 1943 - 1946. As a member of the 25th Infantry Division he fought in New Caledonia, the Philippines, New Zealand, and finally Ja-pan.

Anyone who thinks bowl-ing 900 is nerve wracking talk to George about how it feels to be shot at. Talk to George about hearing bullets pass-ing overhead. Talk to George about the ZIP SOUND of a live bullet. He told me that the first time an enemy missile whizzed overhead he nearly sh-t his pants!

A hundred shots later and George’s nerves settled. His initiation complete, George went on to face several life threatening episodes on the road to Tokyo.

I believe anyone willing to risk life and limb for others is a hero.

That is what George did when he willingly enlisted in the Army during World War II. He willingly enlisted knowing he might die for his country and it’s people. He willingly entered battle for his country and it’s people.

GEORGE IS A HERO.Thank you George for your

service. Thank you BOWL-ING NEWS for recognizing a genuine hero and a good bowl-er to boot.

DOWNEY — Week five was the highest scoring week so far. Numbers soared and the A.B.T.A. team shot to the top of the sheet taking 4 from Team #21. The A.B.T.A. foursome were solid sixes all around. Mike Nakunz 621, Bobby Campagnale 638, Val Wise 669 and Justin Ziegler 671 for a 2599 to #21’s 2433.

Vernon Adams was the number one man on #21 pick-ing off 742 pins. What an anchor!

Check out the high series list this week. Lots of new faces with their big 700’s. In fact, 25 guys make the list—PLUS NICOLE VAN DANIKER coming in 3rd with 780.

Paul Barraco and Kevin Valmonte were perfect. Mike Cammarata’s 280 sparked his team (ZUNIGA’S PLUMB-ING) to a 5/0 win over unlucky #13.

“Money makes the world go round” is a famous quote. Catching the big bucks on the “money-go-round”were: Game One Matt Mosley 299, Game Two Eric Snow 277, and Game Three Andrew Walker.

The Financial Advisors Pot will be called the “SUPER SWEEPER POT” this season. Sweeping up the cash was Kevin Valmonte 300 and Billy Myer Jr. 279.

With every week being a position week Team #21 will get another shot at A.B.T.A. to regain their league lead on week six. Team #23 and THE PROFESSIONAL AP-PROACH are both with-in reach of winning round one with only two Mondays to go. (Each round is 7 weeks.)

New league average this week 217.79. Top ten in-dividual highs? Vernon Adams 246, Kevin Gagnon 242, Ramon Torres 241, Bobby Campagnale 240, Matt Mosley 239, Eric Snow 239, Billy Myers Jr. 239, Charles Zelaya 237, Harry Wong 237 and Roger Wrase 237.

DeeRonn Booker was the “come back kid” Monday. He opened with a meager 172 and backed it up with a 274. 102 pins come back!

Andrew Rietta squeezed a 143 to start the night. A few “calming words” later he poped out a 223. Andre Pitchford almost pitched his ball in the trash after his 124 start. But a 202 came back soothed the pins.

Sponsors will soon be matched with teams. Shirts will be ordered and this 24 team league will be stylin’!
