Clubface is King

Greetings from the Allegria Academy and welcome back from your summer vacations. Today we will focus on how to start the ball in the correct direction. Research has confirmed that the direction the clubface is pointing at impact determines 80-85% of initial ball direction! This is a very high percentage and identifies ‘Clubface as King’.

Using our Flightscope X2 Radar system we can measure your club face direction like never before. Below is an example of a straight, open (to the right) and closed (to the left) clubface for a right handed golfer. See the huge difference in direction from these 3 shots.

This shot started straight. Check the clubface angle (in the red circle) it was just 1.4 degrees to the right of the target therefore the ball started straight.

This shot started left of the target. The clubface was 4.2 degrees left of the target therefore the ball started to the left.

Finally this is a shot to the right of the target. The clubface was 12.3 degrees to the right of the target therefore the ball started right.

AGRONOMY NEWSLETTERThe main focus over the coming month will be the continuation of presenting the golf course for daily play along with pushing turf health and strength ahead of the cooler winter months. We plan to carry out the annual over-seeding to greens during October with the course closed during this period to enable the winter grasses to germinate. The over-seed on greens will take 10-14 days to gain initial establishment and will continue to develop to create a full cover of the base Paspalum grasses by mid-November; the over-seeding process ensures we can offer you year round superior putting surfaces. The agronomy team appreciates your ongoing support and understanding during the closure and initial period as the grasses develop and we hope you enjoy the over-seeded putting surfaces in the winter months.

One thing to remember is as the greens become more receptive/soft due to the over-seeding increased amounts of pitch marks will become apparent on the greens, repair of these is critical to ensure the winter grasses survive the initial establishment period. Many studies have found that incorrectly "repaired" ball marks take up to twice as long to heal as those that are properly repaired; please find below some helpful information on pitch mark repair from the GCSA of America that may give you a better understanding of the correct process.

1. The first step in repairing ball marks is to take your ball mark repair tool and insert the prongs into the turf at the edge of the depression. Note: Do NOT insert the prongs into the depression itself, but at the rim of the depression.

2. The next step is to push the edge of the ball mark toward the center, using your ball mark repair tool in a "gentle twisting motion,” Many golfers believe the way to "fix" a ball mark is to insert the tool at an angle, so the prongs are beneath the center of the crater, and then to use the tool as a lever to push the bottom of the ball mark back up even with the surface. Do not do this! Pushing the bottom of the depression upward only tears the roots, and kills the grass.

Just use your ball mark repair tool to work around the rim of the crater, so to speak, pushing the grass at the edge toward the center of the depression. One way to envision this is to picture reaching down with your thumb and forefinger on opposite sides of the ball mark and "pinching" those sides together.

3. Once you've worked around the rim of the ball mark with your repair tool, pushing the grass toward the center, there's only one thing left to do: Gently tamp down the repaired ball mark with your putter or foot to smooth the putting surface.

So Remember:Wrong: Using the prongs as levers to push up the bottom of the depression.Right: Using the prongs to push grass at the edge of the depression toward the center.

We request that you please repair your pitch marks and if you have a moment - if there isn't another group of golfers behind you waiting for you to clear the green - fix one or two other ball marks, too, if you find more of them on the green.

Repairing ball marks isn't just important for the health of the greens, and for smooth-rolling putts. It isn't just a matter of golf etiquette. It helps take care of the golf courses we play.
