Dear Friends of Hellenic College Holy Cross,

Your generous gifts benefit our beloved school – your beloved school – in so many ways. They keep our incredible Orthodox education affordable and accessible for our future clergy and lay leaders – those men and women who will have a lasting influence on the world through their service to our Faith.

These gifts provide essential funds to meet critical needs as they arise, along with creating new programming and an innovative learning environment. Thanks to your generous support, we are able to offer the best education possible to our future Orthodox leaders.

This report showcases the impressive impact that your generosity has had on HCHC this past fiscal year. Many of our donors have shared with us their stories of what inspires them to give and what they hope their giving will accomplish. We hope you will enjoy reading some of those stories in these pages as much as we loved hearing them.

We’ve also included highlights from some of the students who have benefited from your generosity. Through student scholarships and other gifts to HCHC, they are able to attend school and to give back to their communities—a lesson they’ve learned from you.

Thank you so much for your generous support! Without it, we truly could not fulfill this unique school’s sacred mission.

With our deepest appreciation,

Rev. Fr. Christopher T. Metropulos, DMinPresident

YOU are helping students bridge the gap between the cost of a Christian education and their ability to pay. You are making it possible for them to follow their dreams.

HOW MANY LIVES ARE YOU TOUCHING?

YOUR PLACE IN A STUDENT’S JOURNEYYour gifts inspire our students to strive for excellence; your generosity challenges our faculty to be more innovative; your investment creates a legacy of active kindness.

Hellenic College Holy Cross extends its sincerest gratitude to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Houston, TX for its donation of $50,000.

Rev. Economos Michael J. Lambakis, Cathedral Dean, made the announcement and presentation to HCHC President Rev. Fr. Christopher T. Metropulos, (DMin, MDiv ’80) at the 43rd biennial Clergy-Laity Congress.

A parish with 1200 families, Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral had a ‘100 x 100’ plan: to have an operating budget funded 100% by stewardship in time for the parish’s 100th anniversary in 2017. This five-year goal was realized in only four years, and because of this, they decided to use a portion of the proceeds from their annual festival as an opportunity to give back to the Church on a national level. Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology was the clear choice.

Martha Stefanidakis, National Philoptochos Board Treasurer and Annunciation Cathedral parishioner, was instrumental in making the donation happen. “We were so pleased to be able to make that donation. We really believe the festival proceeds are a gift. The festival is our way to share our culture and faith with the people of Houston and the proceeds with the Church’s most

important ministries. We can’t have a church without our priests or without our school. That’s where our future lies.”

Annunciation Cathedral has always had a strong connection to HCHC. Former HCHC president Rev. Fr. Nicholas C. Triantafilou (MDiv ’63) served there for 23 years. During that time, he was active in expanding the parish and was instrumental in starting the Annunciation Orthodox School. Today, the school has 700 students and the presence of Orthodoxy remains strong in Houston. When Fr. Nicholas became HCHC President, the generosity of his former parishioners in Houston followed. In 2015 Annunciation Cathedral generously donated $25,000 to the Presidential Scholarship Fund, in honor of Fr. Nicholas’ years of service.

Of the parish’s latest and most generous gift, Rev. Economos Lambakis says, “We thought HCHC is an important ministry and would be the best place to put the money.”

With Rev. Economos Lambakis, HCHC alumni Rev. Economos Demetrios Tagaropulos (ThM ’07) - Associate Priest, Rev. Presbyter Christopher Xanthos (MDiv ’10) - Associate Priest, and Rev. Presbyter Gabriel Gadah (MDiv ’08) - Associate Priest, serve at the Cathedral.

Mary Vrountas has been a generous supporter of Hellenic College Holy Cross for years. When she made her August annual fund gift, she shared a beautiful story “about the story” behind her gift – a gift in memory of her late husband Theodore’s parents, Evangeline and Harry T. Vrountas.

In the late 1930s and 1940s, when our Holy Cross seminary was located in Pomfret, Connecticut, Evangeline and her young son, Teddy, would visit periodically. They brought food, supplies, and goodwill to Holy Cross’s future priests. Traveling by train from Boston, Massachusetts, was not easy for Evangeline with a small child and laden with goods, but she made the trip often so that she could do her part to ensure the future of our Faith.

Later, Evangeline and other members of the Boston Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral Philoptochos played an integral role in finding the current home of Hellenic College Holy Cross. Although that move made her trips easier, she would happily have continued her travels if HCHC had stayed in Pomfret.

Evangeline, like so many others, supported our beloved school not for personal glory or recognition but with the unwavering belief in our Faith and the need to nurture our future leaders.

Evangeline and Harry raised a wonderful son, Theodore, who was strong in our Faith because of his parents. Theodore and Mary married in 1958 and shared a beautiful life together.

Theodore died in 2013, joining Evangeline, who died in 1977, and Harry who died in 1968. May their memory be eternal!

Mary’s gift was in memory of them, and in honor of Evangeline’s dedication and hard work for our school. We couldn’t agree more with her belief that her mother-in-law was truly an “unsung heroine” of our school.

Hellenic College Holy Cross is the educational center of Orthodoxy in America, thanks to the strong commitment of unsung heroines and heroes like Evangeline, Harry, Theodore, and Mary – and you!

We are deeply grateful for your support, and we ask that you continue to help nurture the future leaders of Orthodoxy.

Lukas Buhler visited all the main Orthodox seminaries and felt that Holy Cross was the best place for him. He liked the strong intellectual component, and having access to the other member schools of the BTI [Boston Theological Institute] was a pretty big factor, but it really was a decision of the heart. He said“I knew immediately.”

Lukas is combining his full-time studies toward the Master of Divinity degree with a half-time position as a software engineer. “It’s really hard sometimes, combining the two, but this is a dream come true.”

Before dawn on a frigid Saturday morning in December, eight of our students went into Boston for what they call Liturgy on the Streets—engaging with the many homeless who congregate on historic Boston Common. The students were able to buy a number of backpacks and fill them with warm clothing, bottled water, and energy bars. They spent four hours in the bitter cold, talking to homeless individuals and distributing the backpacks, encouraging those who received them to share the contents with others.

One of our students described the day as a “wonderful experience because you may think you are helping the people on the streets, but they actually end up helping you. They teach you humility, sympathy, and how to be grateful for what you have. Most of the people I met did not complain about their situation once. It was very inspiring.”

Alexandra King said “to spend my spring break at Project Mexico was such a blessing…it was great to build friendships with the boys of St. Innocent Orphanage. Being able to experience the chapel services was also great and fostered spiritual growth within myself and the other group members. After coming back, I feel a sense of gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose.”

Jamil Samara had volunteered with Project Mexico twice before, and said ”Each trip has offered countless blessings, and has opened my eyes to the many ways we are called to witness for Christ and His Church and to love one another through prayer, service, and offering.”

Nikolas Kourlouris, a student in the Management and Leadership program, isn’t waiting until he graduates to launch his business career. When he heard about global internships offered by the Libra Group, a family-owned company with Greek roots and diverse business interests all over the world, he immediately applied for an internship in the company’s hospitality division. Out of the hundreds of thousands of undergraduates who apply, only a hundred are chosen annually for these internships—and Nikolas was one of them!

The Telos Project, a five-year initiative at Hellenic College Holy Cross exploring the spiritual and religious lives of young adults ages 23-29, recently announced that fourteen pilot parishes will assist in field research.

Selected from a large and varied pool of applicants, these Orthodox parishes reflect the jurisdictional and geographic diversity of Orthodoxy in America. The parishes will serve as field research sites for the Telos Project over the next four years, designing and piloting new forms of ministry for (and with) young adults. For the first year of the project, the pilot parishes will focus on building and deepening relationships with the young adults in their communities. In May 2018, teams from each parish will travel to a Telos Project conference in Boston, where they will be led through ministry design activities and begin brainstorming unique ways of reaching young adults.

A sister program to the Office of Vocation & Ministry’s CrossRoad Summer Institute, the goal of the Telos Project is to be ‘open source’ learning for the Church. Throughout the project, research findings about young adulthood and ministry—both pilot parish failures and successes—will be shared with the Orthodox community through an online newsletter, social media, and other multimedia outlets.

The fourteen parishes are:

Annunciation Orthodox Church (GOA, Kansas City, MO)

St. Athanasius Orthodox Church (OCA, Nicholasville, KY)

St. Barbara Orthodox Church (GOA, Orange, CT)

St. Demetrios Orthodox Church (GOA, Camarillo, CA)

St. George Greek Orthodox Church (GOA, Chicago, IL)

Holy Trinity Orthodox Church (GOA, Dallas, TX)

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church (GOA, Pittsburgh, PA)

St. John Orthodox Church (Antiochian, Memphis, TN)

St. John the Wonderworker Orthodox Church (OCA, Atlanta, GA)

St. Mary Orthodox Church (OCA, Falls Church, VA)

St. Mary Orthodox Church (Antiochian, Cambridge, MA)

St. Nektarios Orthodox Church (GOA, Charlotte, NC)

Resurrection Orthodox Church (GOA, Castro Valley, CA)

St. Sophia Orthodox Church (GOA, Syracuse, NY)

Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology is blessed to have donors who give continuously to support our school. Angelo and Maria Davos from Chestnut Hill, MA. are a very good example.

Both of them came from Greece and raised their family within the Greek American community. They have been supporters of our school for the last 25 years!

When asked why they give, Mr. Davos says that we need to support our School to make sure that we have priests to keep the Church strong.

By giving, he feels that he can make a difference.

He says, “I don’t give that much. I wish I could give more, but I give what I can. I want the school to continue to grow and to educate the young men and women in the Faith and for our Church to flourish. I try to help whenever I can, giving not only to Hellenic College, but also to my parish and other Greek American organizations.”

His message is clear – we all have to help to ensure that our Church and our School will be here for generations to come.

The George and Judy Marcus Family Foundation has donated $1 million to Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. This gift will provide unrestricted support to strengthen and grow Hellenic College Holy Cross, the only Orthodox college, graduate school, and seminary in the Western Hemisphere.

Hellenic College Holy Cross is humbled by this incredible gift from these leaders of the Greek Orthodox community who are committed to the future of our Faith. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Geron of America, stated, “I give glory to God for this impressive gift made by George and Judy Marcus, who have time and time again shown their desire to not only grow our Church but have it thrive.” Archbishop Demetrios also commented upon hearing this wonderful news: “On behalf of our Archdiocese and the HCHC Board of Trustees, I commend Rev. Fr. Christopher Metropulos, the administration, faculty, and staff for their cooperative work at the educational, intellectual, and spiritual formation center of our Faith.”

“George and Judy Marcus have expressed their belief in educating our future Orthodox clergy and lay leaders through this inspirational gift,” noted Rev. Fr. Christopher Metropulos, the president of Hellenic

College Holy Cross. “Their confidence in our ability to help shape the next generation of the Orthodox Faith is a testament to the strength of the learning and spiritual formation taking place here on the Holy Hill.”

As Hellenic College Holy Cross looks to the next 80 years of its history, this generosity will help increase the reach of the school through enhanced admissions efforts, bring practical and theological training for current Orthodox clergy and Orthodox laity through a new online and continuing education platform, and support other areas of immediate impact.

George and Judy Marcus are committed philanthropists who have given generously to support education, human service organizations, and religious causes.

This generous gift is the second $1 million+ gift that Hellenic College Holy Cross has received in the past year, the first being a $1.5 million gift from the Lilly Endowment Inc. for programmatic support. The commitment of these donors to invest in our school demonstrates the importance of this vital educational ministry of Orthodoxy, and we look forward to the dedication of others.

dimensions was the right choice.” Funnily enough, she says, “I didn’t know there was a seminary here!”

Fr. Seraphim’s first impression of Olenka was that “she was so smart.” They became friends and, over time, more than friends, such that being separated over the summer was hard. Then it got a lot harder. He was working as a camp counselor in California when Olenka called to tell him that she was in the hospital. It was serious—a tumor that would require multiple rounds of grueling chemotherapy. He flew back and surprised her. She surprised him too, saying that she wanted to return to campus and undergo treatment in Boston. “I could have had good care close to home and be with my family,” Olenka remembers. “But I knew that being with him and my friends in this amazing community would bring me the greatest comfort.”

Every young couple faces challenges, but when both are college students and one faces a life-threatening illness, it takes more than their love for each other to get them through—it takes the support of an entire community, which Fr. Seraphim and Olenka have had abundantly at HCHC.

Fr. Seraphim grew up on the West Coast and expected to go to college there. As Washington state high school champion in hurdling, he applied to schools with strong athletic as well as academic programs and was accepted at six of them. Yet he felt torn because Hellenic College seemed more and more like the right choice. “When I studied the curriculum, I knew that was exactly what I wanted.” Beginning as a Classics major, he soon yielded to his longtime hope of becoming a priest. “I always wanted to be a pastor like my dad,” he says. “He has been a great inspiration to me.” So he switched to Religious Studies A, the undergraduate seminarian program, in his sophomore year.

Soon after, Olenka Zharsky arrived at Hellenic as a transfer student from a community college in her home town in New York state. “I was eager to get out of the small town I’d grown up in and I started turning towards my Faith,” she explains. “Hellenic was attractive to me academically and spiritually, and I loved being in a big city. My driving force is intellectual, so coming here and learning deeply about our Faith in all its

By Christmas of their senior year, 2013, Olenka was cancer-free. Besides excellent medical care, she credits “so much divine grace and so much support from everyone” for her recovery. The young couple became engaged the next spring, graduated from Hellenic in May 2014, and married that summer. Ivanna accompanied her parents on St. Helen’s Pilgrimage, the summer travel and language program for rising Holy Cross seniors.

Fr. Seraphim is now serving at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Las Vegas, Nevada. Though the Ramoses regretted saying goodbye to HCHC, their departure was tempered by the thought that “you may leave the school, but it never leaves you.”

HCHC: What are your dreams for the future of the Church?

Art: I would like to have a strong focus on youth-oriented programs.

HCHC: What do you wish we had asked you?

Art: I do have a story to tell! In April, my wife and I saw a young woman at Boston Logan Airport wearing a Holy Cross sweatshirt. We struck up a conversation. The young lady’s name was Jade Austin, and she was flying in with her dad from Oklahoma to enroll at Hellenic College Holy Cross. Jade talked about her Faith, and the journey that brought her to HCHC. She was filled with excitement and anticipation.

HCHC: Tell us a little bit about your Greek heritage.

Art: I grew up in the 1950s in Staten Island, NY. My family attended the Greek Orthodox church there very regularly. My father, who emigrated from Thessaloniki, served on the church board and as president for many years.

HCHC: Why did you make your first

gift to HCHC?

Art: I don’t really remember. My best guess is that I heard about HCHC while attending a wedding or christening and that prompted a donation. Whatever it was, I'm glad, for it has allowed me to contribute and become part of the family.

HCHC: So, you’ve been giving to HCHC for

11 years since that first gift. Help us understand why.

Art: It makes me feel good! (That's not original. I believe I read that Warren Buffet said it.) And, of course, I give in honor of my father of blessed memory.

HCHC: What interests you most about Hellenic

College Holy Cross?

Art: Knowing that it educates not only our priests, but also lay leaders.

HCHC: What would you like to pass on

to future generations?

Art: Hold on to your values and your heritage!

IT MAKES ME FEEL GOODThat’s Why I GiveHCHC is blessed to have many longtime faithful donors. However, we don’t always know the personal stories behind why you give. We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Art Varvoutis about his philanthropy. Here’s what he had to say:

In that instant, she put a name to the face of HCHC. So now I have another answer to the question “Why do you give?” – I’m proud to know our gifts make it possible for Jade and other deserving students to attend HCHC!

On September 14, the Hellenic College Holy Cross community commemorated the Universal Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

To honor this glorious Feast of the Holy Cross, HCHC asked that our alumni, donors, students, parents, and friends to support a Day of Giving campaign for our school – #HonorSeptember14.

You gave, you offered prayers, you wished us the best, and we are so honored by your support!

These are just some of the responses that we heard: “We’ve given to support HCHC, and believe you should too, especially if you support a spiritually rich and educationally sound college, or if you have benefited from the work of a priest, pastoral assistant, or youth director who is a graduate of the school.”

“It’s a worthy cause – worth your partnership. Help support the leaders of today and tomorrow with your gift!”

“God Bless Hellenic College Holy Cross! “

“Ευχαριστώ, αγαπημένη μου Σχολή!”

“May God continue to watch over our beloved school.”

“Xronia Polla!”

“May God richly bless you for all the good works that you do and will do in the future!”

“Join me in the joy of giving :)”

“God bless you all!”

Our 2017 #HonorSeptember14 campaign was an incredible day for our school, raising funds and awareness so that HCHC can continue to educate the future priests and lay leaders answering the call of Christ.

We raised over $25,000 in a single day for our school, more than doubling what we raised last year.

Thank you, as this valuable support allows us to prepare the Orthodox leaders who will spread the love of Christ as a light unto the world!
