We’ve said it a thousand times: “We’re all in this together.” We, as a group, have built what is by far the best public radio station in America. That means the listeners, more than anyone. We have learned to speak truth to power but mostly, we have gained an incredible amount of respect from the political community. Everyone has a chance to speak, whether it’s on the Congressional Corner or Vox Pop, or the Listener Comment line. In the end, this is what community is all about. It hasn’t been easy but with you there, we can do it. It’s almost time for another fund drive which, as you know, is the way keep things going. It’s how we’ve always done it and will always do it. It really is the only way to keep our heads above water. This is not to suggest that we haven’t all done our parts. We all have. It might be you or your parents or your kids or grandkids. Once again, we are being cautious. We can’t afford to bring nineteen volunteers on a rolling schedule into a room and risk disease transmission even among those who are fully vaccinated. So we’ll start a little early on the Roundtable by asking for each of you to put something into the locked box. We’ve been very grateful that people came through in incredible numbers during our last few drives. In each of those non-fund- drive fund drives, you have come up with the million dollars. We need to keep that going! While we hear from a few people who ask why we just can’t do it the old way, most of you understand that we simply must be cautious about the spread of COVID. This is our “new normal.”
Then there is the matter of challenges. We all know how well challenges work. Some amazing, generous people have put big money into these challenges, saying that if we can raise a certain amount of money in a defined amount of time that they will incentivize the effort by giving us one or five or ten thousand dollars or, in a few cases, even more than that. It’s all welcome and we love all those people who care enough to do this. These challenges are a large part of what we do and people seem to love the effort. I can’t tell you how many times people have called in and asked, “Did we make it?” We have never failed to complete a drive. Another important facet of the WAMC Fund Drives concerns the community partnerships where people contribute to WAMC and in so doing, help area organizations with their missions of feeding the hungry, housing the homeless and other worthy causes. People can have a mug or a hat or another incentive, but many people love the fact that their pledge money is leveraged to help those who are really in need. Look, I really don’t have to tell you why this miracle has done so well and why we are all so grateful. We all understand why we have to raise the money, to bring the news and provide a community home for all the wonderful things that you do and need to know about. Every time we begin a fund drive, my wonderful Roselle tells me that people depend on WAMC. I know you understand why the money is so crucial. We have never missed a year of giving our people at least small raises. So that’s it. That’s where we are and why we are coming to you now. After all, it has always been a partnership and you have always been there making it happen. Maybe, at some point it won’t happen but so far, so far, you have always been there and we ask that you get us through one more time.

We officially head into fall, leaving behind a summer that allowed us to feel free again, to a degree. As we wind down from vacation and settle into the new school year, WAMC keeps us engaged and entertained while we enjoy pumpkin spice season.
