PREPARATIONFORWORSHIP
Hearing Aids, Large-Print Hymnals, and Bulletins
are available each week from the ushers.
So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and struck Job with loathsome soresfrom the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. And he took a piece of broken pottery
with which to scrape himself while he sat in the ashes. Then his wife said to him, "Do youstill hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die." But he said to her, "You speak as one ofthe foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receiveevil?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips.
- Job 2:7-10 (ESV)
Jesus sent out [the twelve], instructing them, "Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enterno town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Andproclaim as you go, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' Heal the sick, raise thedead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay. Ac-quire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics orsandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food. And whatever town or village you en-ter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart. As you enter the house,greet it. And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, letyour peace return to you.
- Matthew 10:5-13 (ESV)
Whomever the Lord has adopted and deemed worthy of his fellowship ought to preparethemselves for a hard, toilsome, and unquiet life, crammed with very many and variouskinds of evil. It is the Heavenly Fathers will thus to exercise them so as to put his own chil-
dren to a definite test. Beginning with Christ, his first-born, he follows this plan with all hischildren.

Grace Covenant will be reborn through faith in Christ for the glory of God alone. By submitting to Jesus Christ ashead of the church, our community will find new life in Him who is renewing all creation. Neighbors of every stripfrom college students to retired professionals, hardened skeptics to committed believers will fill Grace Covenant thear the Good News that God so loved the world that He gave his only Son, so that all who believe in Him may noperish but have eternal life. In response, we will train our desires, thoughts, emotions, and actions towards serving so that He might transform us into grateful disciples of Jesus Christ who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

PRAYEROF CONFESSION
Almighty and merciful Father,You made us from dust, and created us a people;
You saved us from death, called us to obedience,
and sent us forth to bless.But still we stray.You form our hearts for Your love, but they embrace our own desires;
You form our minds for Your Word, but they seek our own concerns;You form our days for Your will, but they follow our own schedules.
Your hands are ever at work around us, but we look only to ourselves.
Have mercy upon us, O LORD, and forgive us our sins.
Open our eyes to the work of Your Spirit,and grant us to see Your kingdom on earth,that we may be filled with the assurance of Your grace,and go forth into the world with confidence and joy
to love and serve as You have loved and served us;through Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ,
in whose holy and gracious Name we pray. Amen.

Today the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and numerous other denominations celebrate WoCommunion Sunday. For each piece of music sung or played in todays service, the countrof origin is listed for each work. Camille Saint-Sans (1835-1921), one of the most im-
portant composers of the nineteenth century, is essentially known as both a symphony anan opera composer. His remarkable works for the organ were not recognized until recentlHis Communiondates from 1858 and is a lyrical portrayal of the Eucharist.
Marty Haugen (b. 1950) was raised in theAmerican Lutheran Church (ALC) in Minnesoand also writes contemporary hymns and liturgies for the Lutheran church despite being amember the United Church of Christ. Despite being a non-Catholic, his music has foundfavor in the both Roman Catholic and Protestant congregations, with over 400 published
works to his credit. Haugen composed Soli Deo Gloria1999. This hymn of praise and thankgiving calls to mind the long tradition of music as a gift from God given to people of alltimes and places. The final stanzas printed in the bulletin speak particularly about the manand varied ways in which songs and instruments may enhance our worship and prayer.
There are relatively few women composers for the organ. One of Americas most distin-guished female composers is Emma Lou Diemer (b. 1927). Over the years she has givenconcerts of her own works at the Washington National Cathedral, The Cathedral of OurLady in Los Angeles, and Grace Cathedral and St. Marys Cathedral in San Francisco. Writi
about her own composition Fiestashe says: Fiesta is the word for a Spanish parade and afestival which takes place in Santa Barbara every summer. The early settlers in this area werSpaniards and they came as missionaries to California, where the culture reflects Spanish,Mexican, and American influences. During the Fiesta a Spanish concert always takes place one of the churches in Santa Barbara. In 1966 I wrote my organ piece for that concert.

ng gatherings. We will explore the Scriptures more deeply with others. This is a solid commit-ment of time and energy to God that produces lasting spiritual growth. If you are feeling calledo join in this spiritual discipline or have any questions, please contact Nelson Reveley at 387-80
A tithe is a tenth part. God said, Bring the full tithe into the storehouse and put me to theest. What will happen if this is done? God promised that He would pour out a blessing ouch magnitude that it could not be contained. You are challenged to try this and see if
God keeps His promise. People who tithe testify that He does!
