Letter to Our Readers The Autumn season is a time to thoroughly enjoy the outdoors. The leaves are turning, weather is crisp and it’s time to visit the area’s pumpkin patches, corn mazes and harvest farms. Our writers have put together a listing of many of the farms and markets worth visiting with the family. Please review this issue’s main feature for more details. This month, Venues NJ introduces you to a new editorial feature entitled All That’s Beer presented by Bill “The Brewer”. With the explosion within the craft beer segment of the market, plus the increased interest in the beer category, in general, many of our readers have conveyed a desire to learn more. Hope you will enjoy this new monthly feature. As the fall season approaches, may we suggest you consider a visit to River Rock Restaurant & Marina in Brick, where patrons can experience a cozy atmosphere, good food, refreshing libations and spectacular NFL viewing package. Read more in this month’s Restaurant Profile. Remember the 90’s? Will Smith was still “fresh”, Bill Nye, “The Science Guy” was everyone’s favorite teacher and MTV actually played music. If you enjoyed that music, be sure to catch a local area band called Nine Deeez Nite. Read this issue’s Band Profile and enjoy the memories. This young woman works part-time as a bartender and server while preparing for a full-time career in law enforcement. In her “free time”, she enjoys the outdoors. Read more about Jaclyn Gerhardt, this issue’s Mixologist-of-the-Month. This month, our contributing writer Steve O introduces us to a very funny “Jersey Girl” who was the typical class clown in school, yet suffered from anxiety and had stage fright when younger. Learn more about Jessica Kirson in this issue’s Comic Relief feature. That’s it for this month folks. Now get out, enjoy the fall weather and all the activities surrounding Halloween. For those of a certain age, there are few things better than reminiscing about what a glorious time the 1990s were. Will Smith was still fresh, Bill Nye was everyone’s favorite teacher, MTV actually played music and messages finally became instant. Who wouldn’t want to spend just a few hours reliving that time?

Well get ready for Nine Deeez Nite, the band that sets up an entire tribute show for the 90s. Made up Casey Slater on vocals and keys, Timmy Gibbler on guitar, Roach on bass and Shady Frasier on drums, they’ve created an entire spectacle for the audience to enjoy.

When Nine Deeez Nite is rocking, expect to hear a little bit of everything. If it was big 20 years ago, they’ll play it. “We’re literally the only band that you’ll probably ever hear Play Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit and then play Britney Spears right after that,” said Frasier. Pearl Jam, ‘NSYNC, Snoop Dogg, Chumbawamba, if it was a 90s, it’ll get played. They’ll definitely throw in the best of those classic 90s one-hit wonders including Semisonic, Four Non Blondes, Aqua and much more. They never set up a playlist until right before they go on so they can read the audience and get a feel for what they want on that particular night. Even between sets they’ll have a DJ keep the crowd moving with their Nine Deeez Mega Mix Dance Party.

Going to see Nine Deeez Nite is far more than seeing a cover band play. The crowd gets sent back 20 years and is immersed in 90s culture throughout the night. They set up a Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo Entertainment System for the audience to play with all the classics including Mario Kart, Mortal Kombat, NBA

Jam and more and it certainly is a crowd favorite. “If we don’t see one person open up a bin and say well I haven’t seen this game and forever we’re not doing our job,” said Roach. “Though we do sometimes during the show have to tell people that they have to blow in it.” They have a slide show full of pop culture and everything else 90s, a Double Dare-like physical challenge and trivia where participants can win classic 90s memorabilia such as Beanie Babies or Titanic on VHS. “We like to pride ourselves thinking we are ambassadors of the 90s and we tried to give it an exciting tribute show to the whole decade,” said Roach. The only way they could pack more 90s into the show is if they use their sneakers to provide the light show.

It should come as no surprise Nine Deeez Nite plays a lot of colleges across the country giving the 90s generation a chance to go back to a time when their biggest problem was choosing between Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network on Friday nights and trying to remember whether or not they fed their Tamagotchi. They’ve played Rutgers University including Scarlet Knights Football pregame shows and have headed as far away as Western Michigan University, The University of Miami and North Park University in Chicago.

Locally they can be found at Bar Anticipation where they are one of three

bands who perform for Beat The Clock on Tuesdays. They also play Just Jake’s in Montclair, The Wicked Wolf in Hoboken and The Nutty Irishman in Farmingdale regularly. But their highlight goes to opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers at Prudential Center. “That was a really, really awesome show for us they give us a nice luxury box suite and treated us really well,” said Frasier, adding they have more shows opening for 90s bands in the works. They’ve also had the chance to play at Metlife Stadium before New York Giants and Jets games, including last month’s Giants home opener against the Atlanta Falcons where they honored the XXV Super Bowl champions from the 1990-91 season, as well as in Championship Plaza in Newark before New Jersey Devils games.

With Nine Deeez Nite you can forget about the crazy world we live in today and spend a few hours back in a simpler time. You won’t just hear a band perform, you’ll play your favorite video games, remember all the wonderful pop culture and try to prove you know the 90s better than your friends.

Experience the nostalgia by visiting NineDeeezNite.com where you can find their show calendar, media and contact information. Also be sure to give them a like at facebook.com/ninedeeeznite.

Jaclyn Gerhardtby CLARE MARIE CELANO

Jaclyn Gerhardt loves bartending and it is the perfect career for her as she works toward her long term goal of becoming a police officer, something she has wanted to be since she was a child. Gerhardt, who resides in Matawan, has bartended for three years now. Currently, she tends bar at Blue Rock in Keyport. Additionally, she works at the Fireside in Marlboro as bartender and server. She works both jobs part-time and loves the work. Starting as a server in her teens, Gerhardt said after some time, she moved to bartending because she wanted to be able to have more contact with her customers. “I wanted to connect with them more. I wanted more experience than a server was able to have,” she said, adding that her customers make her job “fun.” “Many have become friends and like family,” she

added. In addition to her positions as server and bartender, Gerhardt previously worked for a paramedical company doing alcohol and drug testing, as well as fingerprinting for various groups, including the US Navy and US Air Force. She said she “kind of just fell into” the job but it ended up being in line with the law enforcement

career she is seeking. She completed two years of schooling at Montclair University working on a degree in criminal justice and psychology, a course of study she is planning on returning to soon. Gerhardt has her mind set on getting a position as a police officer and in preparation has already rigorously trained, tested and passed two police entrance tests … both with flying colors. So when they call, she will be more than ready.“I always wanted to be a cop,” Gerhardt said. “I did change my major a couple of times and at one time was working toward a child advocacy position but after an internship in the field, I realized I worked and related better to adults so I went back to my plan of becoming a police officer.” The Gerhard family is no stranger to law enforcement. Gerhardt said her family has worked in law enforcement in the prison system. “At one time, I was also thinking of becoming a psychiatrist and working in the prison system,” she said, adding that the field of psychiatry is still something she is thinking about. As far as leisure activities go, Gerhardt says she loves the outdoors, and can be found doing any number of outdoor activities including, fishing, hiking, camping and bicycle riding. She said she grew up doing these activities with her dad, Fred, who she said is her best friend. “I’m the son he never had,” she added.

Ready For Takeoff: The Growing Popularity of Beer Flights

It’s hard not to notice the huge craft beer boom. Places that once had only fizzy yellow beer, are now realizing the customer’s demand for a great tasting craft brew. Stadiums, mom and pop restaurants and even your local tavern are now carrying an array of unique beers. Choosing from all these excellent beers can leave the average beer drinker with questions about what to drink. Micro-breweries have long solved this dilemma by offering a few small samples of the different beers they brew, known as a flight.

Why is it called a flight anyway? The answer is lost to history but one could imagine a few scenarios. Maybe it evolved from taking a flight to different countries to try their beers, or perhaps the origin could be moving step-by-step like a flight of stairs through a brewer’s offerings. However it took off, the concept seems to be similar everywhere. A flight is normally a

sample of 4 – 8 beers presented in 3 – 6 oz. size glasses.

There are a few guidelines to avoid any turbulence and to make your “flight” more enjoyable. A common approach is to stick to one style of beer and then compare different breweries. This type of critical tasting brings to light tastes that may have been left in the dark during a normal drinking session at the bar. When comparing beers of the same style, I recommend sampling each beer first, then circling back and trying each of them again in a different order, taking mental notes of what distinguishes each beer.

Another popular flight plan is to go where the wind takes you. Choose odd beers with weird names and funny tap handles. When selecting a variety of different beers with little in common, I suggest that each beer should be enjoyed in its order of flavor intensity.

Thank you for flying with me today; this has been your Captain, Bill “The Brewer.” This is my maiden voyage with Venues NJ and I look forward to offering this new feature each month. I hope to provide an entertaining and educational piece about beer for your reading pleasure. You can also find me on Twitter @TheBrewerBill for more on All That’s Beer. Thank you.

Jessica KirsonIt’s been about a year, but back in August of 2014 I interviewed Frank Liotti. After that interview Frank

and I became Facebook friends and what a revelation. Frank is constantly working on new material and I was able to watch him in many, many videos. A good many of these videos featured fellow comic, Jessica Kirson. From the beginning, I loved the way these two worked together and I always thought that I’d eventually ask Jess to be a future interview subject. Well this past summer, a new comedy, The Jim Gaffigan Show, began airing on TV Land. I watched every episode and loved it, but I digress. Gaffigan, being the generous guy that he is, has seemingly hired nearly every comic he’s ever worked with and in one of the episodes I did a double take when I saw a somewhat “typecast” Jessica playing something of a crazy lady on the street. Long story short, I asked Jessica if she’d consent to be our diva for the month of October.

Venues-NJ: Let’s start with the fact that you’re a Jersey Girl from South Orange. Usually I start with something like, “were you the class clown”, but I read that you had a little bit of stage fright when you were younger and your therapist mother suggested an anxiety specialist, and you personally took a comedy class. So fill us in on the young Jessica and how you became the one we see today!

Jessica Kirson: I was always the class clown. I found power in humor as a young child. Both of my parents are funny. I never thought of being a comedian but in my late twenties me grandmother to me I should do it. I was petrified but I ended up taking a class. It helped me get up in front of a small group

and try out material.

V-NJ: As someone who tried this stand-up thing many years ago and know how tough it is, I always root for the comics I find hilarious. You’re one of them. You are already damned successful but I’d like to know where you see yourself in one, five or ten years. (I’d love to see you in a good ensemble sit-com).

JK: My goal has always been to get to the point professionally where I can fill up a theater and do stand up. I want to get to a point where I can make a difference in the world. Help people see things differently. I want to do service. I would love to have a sketch show or a talk show.

V-NJ: You’re doing great, always working but you must be exhausted! How much travelling do you do? Are your days like most other comics who are on the road, noon wake ups, stroll around a mall then hang out at the club until your set?

JK: I travel a lot which is hard but I also make sure to have some down time. I don’t like too much down time because then I get anxious.

It’s not good for me to think too much. Some comics are on the road a lot! I can’t go away for weeks at a time it’s too depressing and lonely

V-NJ: You really are incredibly active. I look over your website and get tired. I know you don’t like too much downtime but is there anything you do just for you?

JK: I do make sure I get down time just for me. I make sure to take some days off so that I can relax. It’s easy to get burnt out.

V-NJ: Give us an idea of what your work schedule looks like for the next 6 months or so. Anything going on in Jersey?

JK: I will be on and off the road. I am constantly updating my schedule. (Jess has a full schedule on her website at www.jessicakirson.com but it looks like her next Jersey appearance will be in Rutherford on October 29, with many shows in NYC in between)

V-NJ: Just as a fan, I gotta say I love the fact that Gaffigan tries to get nearly every comic he’s ever met onto his show. Anything else planned for working with him?

JK: Gaffigan is great. He is so funny and so giving. I would do exactly what he did. Help all of my friends. I am working on a standup comedy/reality special.

Thank you for thinking of me :)

Comic Relief

Sadly, Selena Coppack’s aBostonian and doesn’t understand that the only real teams to root for are in NY and NJ. I jest of course (kinda, sorta). Coppack has been performing stand up for eight years and her new book, The New Rules For Blondes, launches in April.

Were you “the funny one” growing up?

I come from a very funny home and my older sister Laurel is a comedian, too. So I wasn’t really ‘the funny one’ at home so much as Laurel and I spent a lot of time writing musicals in our bedrooms, choreographing strange dance numbers, and watching “Saturday Night Live” since age 7. I think that my parents and oldest sister Emily are super hilarious, too. But yes, I’ve always been a bit of a ham and really interested in comedy and performing.

Along those lines, did you do all the school productions? Where’d you grow up? Or rather, if you’re anything like me, where were you raised?

I grew up outside of Boston and I did all of the school plays growing up -- I absolutely loved performing and the excitement of rehearsing and being in shows. I did some professional theater in Boston (at the Boston Baked Theater--now gone) and in high school I became interested in singing, too. I went to college in upstate NY where I majored in English and didn’t do any of the plays on campus; but I was in the only co-ed a cappella group on campus (the Hamilton College Hamiltones) and the improv troupe. After school I moved to Chicago

to study improv comedy further and it was improv that really led me to standup. I did improv for years and eventually I just got sick of working with other people, which makes me sound like a total curmudgeon, I know.

Stand up is very tough. You have to be able to take rejection. How’d you handle your first bomb, unless you’re the one comic who’s never experienced that?

The rejection is definitely hard and it’s something that everyone -- even my comedy idols -- have experienced at some point. Early on I think that I wanted the audience to like me, which can be dangerous territory, especially for female comedians. You have to be confident and feel entitled to be up there with the microphone and that took me a while to figure out -- how to just own the stage and trust myself more. I think of standup as like training a dog -- if you get out there and you’re confident and in control, the audience is with you. But if you exude a sense of nervousness or you seem insecure, they’ll eat you alive. I’ve been doing standup for about eight years and even now sometimes I’ll have a show where I can sense that certain people in the audience aren’t completely on board with me and it makes me feel nervous, but I know to just plow through it and keep on going and eventually I’ll hit on a joke or reference that wins them over.

Is this a means to an end? “SNL”, sitcoms, head writer--what’s your goal?

I definitely don’t think of standup as a means to an end and I think that comedians who do are pretty miserable people. It has to be its own reward or else you’re crazy to do this thing. But as far as my goal, mine is pretty broad: I’d like for my comedy (performance, writing) to pay for my life. I don’t know exactly how that will shake out, but I’d like my job to be what I love to do, which is write and perform comedy. I have a book coming out in April (The New Rules for Blondes, from It Books/HarperCollins), which I hope will open up new opportunities for me. It’s a collection of humorous essays celebrating and subverting the blonde stereotype, but it’s for readers of all hair colors.

Destination Purgatory will be launching a series of ghost hunting packages that won’t disappoint the believers in the paranormal, as well as change the minds of the skeptics.

Melissa L. Freya and Art Petersen, an investigative team with empathetic and clairvoyant abilities, will be filming a Pilot Episode for the launch of their new show “Destination Purgatory: Trapped Between Heaven and Hell” at Burn Brae Mansion in Glen Spey, New York.

Melissa L. Freya, author of the horror novel “Somewhere in the Middle”, and the soon to be released supernatural thriller “Attached”, has been actively gifted with the ability to see and communicate with spirits, both malevolent and benevolent, since childhood.  Art Petersen has been seeing ghosts since he was a child; full bodied apparitions of strangers and family alike.

Burn Brae Mansion has a long history of paranormal activity. Freya and Petersen, as a team, have been the primary investigators of Burn Brae Mansion since 2011. They have logged hundreds of hours of audio and video evidence,

as well as photographic evidence in the thousands. Burn Brae has also opened its doors in the past, with investigations conducted by television shows “Psychic Kids”, “Stranded” and most recently by “Ghost Hunters”.

“When thinking about how we wanted to approach our Pilot Episode, we decided that we wanted to include the curious, the skeptics and those addicted to the paranormal. We’ve teamed up with Burn Brae Mansion and have set up three events. We are also available, by request, for groups who book directly with the Mansion on non-event dates and requests to investigate other locations, ” said Melissa L. Freya.

The Destination Purgatory events will be held on September 26 and October 31. Guest Tickets will include overnight stay in the Mansion or Stables Hotel Rooms, full dinner and breakfast, use of the grounds and Olympic size swimming pool, introduction lecture on the Mansion, its grounds, its history and its active spirits, a lesson on how to use paranormal equipment, a complete tour of the Mansion, and all of its secrets, a late night tour on foot

through the forest to the graveyard where guests will experience the paranormal in its rawest form, and each guest room will be equipped with a ghost hunting kit.

The Destination Purgatory team will have a full cache of equipment, in addition to a camera crew. After the tour and cemetery walk is completed, guests are free to run their own investigations throughout the night. Each guest’s evidence will be reviewed, and they will receive a DVD of their own personal findings episode, which will include highlight footage of findings that Destination

Purgatory’s Paranormal Team has captured during their stay. “So come out and interact with the spirits and capture some authentic evidence to show your family and friends,” said Art Petersen.

Ticket Packages start at $125 per person. For more information or to purchase tickets visit Destination Purgatory: Trapped Between Heaven and Hell on Facebook, email [email protected], call Melissa L Freya at 570-309-4718.

EXPECTATIONSA belief that someone will or should achieve something; a strong belief that something will happen or be the case in the future.

Note: Recent events and discussions over the past few months with venue owners and some readers of our publication have led me to repeat this message that I wrote a few years ago.

During the past year, I have witnessed a number of restaurant and bar venue closings, change of ownership and re-openings. With this in mind, I would like to address a rather important issue: Grand Opening Expectation. Throughout the past nine years, I have been invited to and attended many a Grand Opening event within the hospitality industry. Quite often, the expectations and / or “hype” preceding the actual occasion far exceeds the event itself. There are numerous reasons for this reality. On the side of the venue management, the rush to open the business (for financial rewards, etc.) is often premature; on the side of the public, the expectation for first-class food & service is unrealistic. As a result, both sides often end up disappointed. After spending many months, and sometimes years in building, renovating and preparing the venue, hiring staff and procuring the right vendors, owners need to take the necessary time to properly train their staff and execute as many “dry runs” or soft openings as necessary to ensure they are truly ready to meet their clientele. The result will be satisfied customers with a desire to return …. and tell their friends. The public, on the other hand, should be aware and realize that too often, Grand Opening events mean overcrowding, long waits and often, less than first-rate food preparation and service. The result: a premature decision never to return. While it takes time, effort and skill to prepare for the opening of a business, always remember, first impressions are lasting and hard to change. I am simply advocating patience and the right mindset when trying out a brand new restaurant, pub or bar establishment. I can certainly attest, after years of working professionally to help market hospitality venues, that nearly all owners and management do their absolute best to get it right for you, the customer. But with anything that is brand new, some challenges arise that are often quickly addressed and then fixed. It’s the nature of the business.
