PROCEDURES FOR ORGANIZING CLUB RUNS Anyone organizing a Club Run is responsible for supplying relevant information about the coming event for the Newsletter prior to the event. They are also responsible for a Run report for the Newsletter following the event. (This can be delegated to another person – but the organizer is responsible for getting the article to the editor). Please note that there are available spaces, in the Club Calendar, for members to offer their services in organizing a Club Run.

Page 5: OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2018 edition

As I write this report it is the weekend of 22nd/23rd of September. It has been a very busy weekend in and around Murray Bridge. Events happening included the 100th Murray Bridge show; the 33rd running of the 24 hour pedal prix at Sturt Reserve; the 80th anniversary of the opening of Christ Church Lutheran on Swanport Rd. Murray Bridge and River Murray Football League grand final- although held at Meningie it featured many Murray Bridge teams. You may have been involved in one or more of these events, either as an onlooker or as a participant in activities. In fact some of our Car club members were involved in a vehicle display at the Murray Bridge Show; if you were, then thank you for your efforts. We may not fully appreciate the importance of being involved in community events and the ramifications it may have on the overall success of an event. Even when our personal input into an event is minimal, it is still far better than no involvement at all. If no-one became involved with a community event then very soon there would no longer be community events. We would be left with people living in their community with little or no interaction between each other. We are very fortunate that, within our Car Club, we have very good attendance and involvement at club meetings and on club runs. An example of this was on Thursday 20th September when we enjoyed another successful Patron’s Run, hosted by Bob and Lyn Hunter – a great day! I encourage anyone who has not been on a club run to come along and get to know other members of our club – there are plenty of them. They are all out to not only enjoy a run in their car, but to also enjoy the interaction and friendship of other like-minded people. This is what our club is all about!

Retirement.

On behalf of our club I would like thank Neil Schubert for his many years of dedicated service to our club as the membership officer - a role he has diligently performed. Over the years, he has informed many prospective members about our club and the necessary obligations to join the club. Neil has processed countless applications of new members, which of course included introducing new members to our club at our monthly meetings: all of this being done in Neil’s own special way. As we know, Neil has been experiencing some health issues in recent times and John Courtney stepped up to fill the role of temporary/acting membership officer – Thank you John. Neil had every intention of returning to his duties as membership officer, but ongoing health issues precluded him from doing so and this has led to his retirement from “active duty”. So it is with gratitude that we say, ”a sincere thank you to Neil, and also to his wife May who has assisted him in his duties over many years, for their long term dedication to our club”. The role of membership officer has been taken over by Trevor Wehrman. Thanks Trevor for taking on this role. We wish you all the best for the future - both in the capacity of membership officer and within our club.

Claude.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY

It is also with much sadness that we pay our respects to other fellow club members, who have left us during past months:

To Peter Kiely, whose wife, Tracee, passed away on 23/8/18, we offer our sincerest thoughts and heartfelt condolences.

In addition, our deepest sympathies are extended to:- Ian and Lynette Buchanan on the passing of Ian’s sister, Sylvia, on 12/8/18; Rodney and Kerry McCue on the sad loss of Rodney’s mother, Marie, on 18/8/18; and to Jeff and Aileen Martin, on the passing of Jeff’s brother, Brian, on 20/8/18. May those left behind cherish their happy memories of their loved ones and find peace in their hearts. Club members extend sincere condolences to any other members who may have experienced the recent loss of a family member or friend.

TRIBUTE TO LIFE MEMBER, LES COWIE.

It is with much sadness that we farewell esteemed Club Life Member, Les Cowie, who passed away on 21st August, 2018. Our heartfelt sympathies go to his wife of almost 60 years, Brenda, and to their family members.

Les and Brenda joined the ACCMB in 2000 and from the start were active members, participating in all aspects of the club. They also enjoyed rallies with other clubs, which led to Les proposing that he, with Brenda and a small committee, organise a rally held by our club, and inviting other clubs to join in. And so, the first “Twin Bridges Rally was born in 2006. Over the next seven years, another three Twin Bridges were run under Les and Brenda’s leadership, and what a success they were. They were extremely well received by other clubs and put the Auto Collectors Club of Murray Bridge well and truly on the map and our club is all the better for it. In recognition of all this organisation and hard work, Les and Brenda were bestowed Life Membership of the club in 2012. Retiring from rally organising didn’t stop participation in, and planning and conducting other runs and functions for the benefit of our members.

A great bloke and a top-notch club member, Les will be sadly missed by all of us.

Long-term member, Mal Schenscher, left us on 30/8/18. Our thoughts and sympathies go to his son, Karl, and to all those who held Mal dear to their hearts. Mal always enjoyed his Club outings and really appreciated the vehicles.

Rodney Crush passed away on 9/8/18 and we offer our sincerest sympathies to his wife, Val, and family. Rodney will be fondly remembered.

FROM THE EDITOR

Hi there, For such a generally happy Club, there have been times of great sadness of late, with the loss of several of our membership. Saying a final “goodbye” to respected friends, with whom we have spent many enjoyable times over the years, is not an easy thing manage and Tom’s and my personal care and thoughts are with those loved ones left behind. I am feeling a little guilty because I realised just a couple of days ago that I hadn’t forwarded a synopsis of the arrangements for the Wellington Strawberry Fete Run to our webmaster, Rhonda. As I am the organiser of the Run, it is my responsibility to do that, as early as possible. Of course, Rhonda being the very efficient webmaster she is, had copied out what was printed in our last magazine and loaded it onto the Club’s website. But, as it was really my responsibility, she should not have had to do that. Of all people, you would think that the editor of our magazine (i.e. ME), who knows what it is like to wait for articles to be sent in by other Club members, should be the very one who doesn’t forget to do her duty! My point, in “owning up” to my misdeed, is that I would like to encourage everyone in our Club who organizes an event, or writes a report on an event, to try to keep in mind that sending information to both the webmaster and the editor is part of the deal. It helps us out SO much and we do really appreciate those who always remember to comply with this requirement. I shall try to do much better in future! Good Reading and “Stay tuned” - Lyn.

MAGAZINE/WEBSITE ARTICLES

Would members who organize Club Runs please write a report on their run and deliver to Lyn West either by post/hand delivery to the letter box at 55 Verdun Road, Murray Bridge, 5253, or email to [email protected]? Also, please send same to our Webmaster, Rhonda Scarman, [email protected] for inclusion on the Club Website. Coming events information and any other articles for the Newsletter should be passed on in the same way. To ensure inclusion in the next Newsletter, articles should reach the Editor AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR to the December meeting. Many thanks for your cooperation – Lyn W.

LADIES’ DAY RUN (17/10/18) (Mid-week Run – Wednesday)

We will leave the Club Rooms at 9.30am. Travel via Old Princes Highway through Monarto and

Callington to Strathalbyn. I have met with Cynthia Nicholson and a generous Morning Tea will be at

11.00am, cost of $10.00 per head, for approximately 20-25 people. Arriving early will be an advantage as

there is mention of photos being taken for Sgorra Bhreac Garden promotion, so it would be great if we

could have as many Classic/Vintage Vehicles as possible to participate in the photographs.

As we are not sure just how long the photographs and garden walk will take, please choose between

bringing your own picnic lunch and buying something in Strathalbyn.

Travel home at your leisure.

Register your intention to attend on the Run Sheet at the October General Meeting or contact Jan Hall

(0438607116) for further enquiries.

We have been invited to display 7 vehicles at the Lerwin Nursing Home on Friday morning. We will assemble in a separate fenced area at the front of Lerwin where residents and staff will view our vehicles with owners in attendance to answer any questions. This would be followed by a BBQ lunch provided by Lerwin and then each vehicle owner is to give a brief talk (2 minutes) about their vehicle. If you would like to nominate your vehicle for display please contact Claude Minge 0408 813 436. Limited to 7 vehicles. A brief description of your vehicle is needed for Lerwin to print in its newsletter prior to the event.

If you will be attending and wish to show your vehicle, please call make sure to include your name/s on the Run Sheet at tonight’s General Meeting on 2nd October, 2018.

WHY NOT HAVE A GO?

Many of our members would have been surprised to witness “The Old Codger” (alias Tom West) performing at our Christmas Picnic last year. His contribution was obviously thoroughly enjoyed by all, judging by comments. I am sure that there are other hidden talents contained within our membership, and I would be most interested in helping those talents come to light. Please contact me (Lyn West 85 326908) if you would like to have a go (singing, dancing, poetry, playing an instrument, juggling – whatever). Dobbing someone else in is allowed, too! Come on, don’t be bashful. You never know, you just may enjoy it! Entertainment is all the better for something or someone new being introduced. Yours in hope – Lyn.

MEMBERS

PLEASE SERIOUSLY CONSIDER the FUTURE of the well renowned

TWIN BRIDGES RALLY beyond 2019

Twin Bridges Rally (TBR) Coordinators, Maureen, Graham, Elaine, Roy, Treasurer & Committee, Ricky & Neil have indicated to the ACCMB Committee (ACCMB committee fully agreed with the training of new blood) of their intentions to STEP DOWN from their respective roles after the 8th Biennial 2019 TBR — having then served this role for 6 yrs as co-ordinators, and 4 years as TBR Treasurer & committee. They feel that it is now time for the training of new people for the future, so as to ensure that the TBR continues on into the future & ensuring new ideas by NEW people will add colour, variance & contrast to any future events. Anyone interested would serve with the present coordinators & committee for the next 12 months, right up to and including the 2019 TBR on OCTOBER 18th-19th-20th . PLEASE CONSIDER SERIOUSLY joining his GREAT team for a well tried and proven event, so that the TBR commenced by Brenda, LATE Les, June, Terry, Lyn & Bob some 14 years ago will LIVE on.

Should there be no volunteers forthcoming, 2019 TBR would more than likely be the LAST.

Do we as the ACCMB with some 300 members really want that????? For further information contact Maureen, Graham, Elaine, Roy, Ricky, Neil or President Claude and arrange a time to sit down and discuss with us what’s involved in staging this well known TBR.

McLAREN VALE RUN (22/8/18)

After much cold weather over the past weeks, it was a pleasure for the Auto Collectors Club of Murray Bridge (ACCMB) to assemble at the clubrooms in warmish weather and be welcomed by tour organizer, Mike Chapman. 22nd of August saw 22 members in 11 vehicles depart at 9:30 a.m. and travel along the Old Princess highway to Mt. Barker and then onto Meadows for a morning tea and comfort stop. Departing Meadows, it was off to McLaren Vale via McLaren Flat, arriving at d’Arenberg Winery Cube at 11.00am. On arrival, tour leaders for the day, Mike and Arlene Chapman, escorted ACCMB members into the “Cube”, with members being amazed at the quirky design, construction and the size of d’Arenberg. d’Arenberg was founded in 1912 by the Osborn family and is currently managed by fourth generation family member, Chester Osborn, manufacturing distinctive wines by using traditional methods, both in the vineyard and the winery. “The Cube”, being a dream of Chester Osborn in 2003, was realized in 2016 when construction commenced on the 5 story multi function building, set amongst Mourvedre vines, with its views overlooking the rolling hills of Willunga and the 19th century Osborn homestead. December 2017 saw the d’Arenberg winery “Cube” opened to the public. In 2018, the “Cube” received a prestigious Good Design Award, the highest honour for design innovation in Australia. During a tour through the complex, ACCMB members enjoyed wine tasting, viewing the abstract objects, artwork, museum decor, colour and especially the views from the 5th story cellar room. At around 12:15 p.m., with members all “Cubed” out, it was off to the McLaren Vale Hotel for a delicious lunch, followed by the usual “thank you” to organizers , Mike and Arlene, before all ACCMB members departed at 3:00 p.m. after another great day out.

(A big “thank you” indeed to Mike and Arlene, for what turned out to be a very popular event in our Club’s calendar. This report was co-written by Mike Chapman and Graham Edwards. – Ed.)

DRIVE YOUR OLD VEHICLE / ECONOMY RUN (1/9/18) Spring is here at last. Time for a drive in your old car in some fine weather. That has been the

premise of the Federation of Historic Motoring Clubs (SA) now for some years and it has been put into practice, also for some years, by the Gawler Veteran, Vintage and Classic Vehicle Club in its “Drive it Day” gathering at Bethany. Our club attended last year and were mightily impressed with both the venue and the amazing variety and quality of vehicles that the event attracted, so decided to accept their kind offer to attend again.

Our group gathered at the Murray Bridge Railway Station car park in lovely sunshine prior to our departure. This sunshine gradually disappeared as we climbed the Palmer hill on our way to our first stop of the run at the Lovell’s bakery at Mount Pleasant. The weather had deteriorated a bit more by then, but we were able to partake of the bakery’s wares without getting wet. We were joined there by a few more members, including “locals” Pete & Meg Stephens, conspicuously waiting in their bus. Continuing on through Springton and Eden Valley we encountered a few more showers

Mary Rowley in front of "The Cube". (Photo supplied by Graham Edwards.)

Page 14: OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2018 edition

but it was still a great drive, especially the “short cut” through the hills past the Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park on our way to the Mengler’s Hill Lookout, where we paused to take in the view. The rain stopped, allowing us to enjoy the great panorama across the Barossa Valley.

From there it was only a short drive down to the Bethany Reserve where we were guided by Alvin Jenkin and the Gawler mob into our allocated spot, “down by the river so you will feel at home”, it was explained. The usual very interesting and very varied array of vehicles awaited our inspection in this lovely setting, which we all proceeded to do before lunch. Everything from the sporty to the regal, very old to not so old. There was definitely something to satisfy all tastes. Then there were the people, some good friends, some acquaintances, some we had never met, all out for a good yarn in what was, by now, again warm sunshine.

A leisurely lunch followed, then another inspection in case we missed something or someone. By now some were leaving, so by mid-afternoon most of our group followed suit and departed by various routes of their choosing. A very pleasant day out.

This run was also used to determine the winner of the “Paul Kruger Economy Run” trophy. This was organised by Neil & May Schubert. Participants were required to estimate the fuel consumption of their XP Falcon for the run. We were not to know, however, that May had deliberately driven with the choke out, to help confuse us! Still the Falcon achieved 27.57 Miles per Gallon, but I cannot divulge who guessed correctly, or nearest to it. You will have to wait for the Presentation Dinner to find out.

(Thanks, John & Vicki, for arranging this very pleasant outing for our club members. Good report, too! And thank you, also, for the photos, below. – Ed.)

PATRON’S RUN (20/9/18)

21 cars left the Clubrooms on time at 9:30 a.m. sharp and travelled down the Old Princes Highway to Callington, where we met up with Colin and Raelene Wegener. We then continued on to Strathalbyn and into Rankine Street, where Ben Finniss’ yard is situated – and not a parking spot in sight! We managed to squeeze a dozen cars into his yard and the rest had to find parks wherever they could. Ben said that the locals must have heard that we were coming and tried to keep us out!

Ben has a wonderful collection of older and modern classics, the oldest being a 1934 Morris 10 Sports. Ben had tea, coffee and biscuits ready for us. After admiring the 45 cars on display, we then moved on to the Milang Road and into the Pier Hotel for lunch.

The lunch was very generous and there was a good variety to choose from, with tea and coffee to wash it down.

Thanks go to all who attended and made it a great day. Thanks, also, to Terry and June Mabbitt for being “Tail-End

Charlie”. Happily, there were no incidents to report, but we did hear that Colin and Raelene Wegener clocked up a very respectable 100,000 miles in their 1962 EK Holden during the Run. Quite an achievement!

MURRAY BRIDGE SHOW (22/9/18)

On Saturday September 22nd we enjoyed a good sunny day, a change from the last couple of years, for the annual gathering of Members and their vehicles at the Murray Bridge Show. A couple of hic-cups on arrival concerning position, which were soon sorted out and the early arrivals were able to take up their positions in our normal spot adjacent to the Wanderers Cricket Club-rooms. Thirteen units, including cars, a caravan, a truck and even a modified T Model were assembled for the public to inspect. Years of manufacture ranged from 2003 back to 1927. 22 Members attended to these vehicles and enjoyed the day with plenty of talking about their particular units both to the public and other Club Members. As I was otherwise occupied during most of the day, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Aileen Martin, Bob Hunter (our Patron) and Peter Mach for the work they did in organising the setting up and dismantling of the banners, arranging the vehicles’ details for the commentary and the order in which they were to go into the Grand Parade. Problems precluded other sections of exhibitors from taking part, so our Club was the only motorised participant. The run was enjoyed by all members and I am sure enjoyed also by the many spectators around the oval, many of whom showed us the thumbs up as we went past. My thanks again go to all who assisted in making this another successful outing for the Club.

(Once again, we have Jeff Martin to thank for acting as Run Organiser for the annual local Show and our Club’s participation in same. Thank you, too, Jeff, for this report on the event. – Ed.)

ROAD RULES.

Tricky Road Rules Explained (from SAMotor – Spring 2016 edition)

QUESTION EXPLANATION

What should I do if the traffic lights are not working and there is no policeman directing traffic?

Treat as any intersection with no traffic lights. This means you need to give way to your right. If you are turning right, give way to all oncoming vehicles going straight or turning left.

When can I use my fog lights?

The law states that you can only use fog lights in hazardous weather conditions, e.g. fog, dust or heavy rain. Remember to turn them off when weather improves.

If an emergency vehicle is on the other side of the road, do I still have to slow down?

If the road has a median strip (regardless of whether it’s raised or simply just a painted one) then, no, you do not have to slow down. But if the road is only divided by a white line, or no line at all, then you must reduce speed to 25 km/h.

Do I need to indicate when leaving a roundabout?

Almost always, you need to indicate when leaving a roundabout. Whether you’re turning left, right or going straight ahead, you should indicate left just before you exit. The only exception is if it’s not practical – say it’s a very small roundabout and you are driving straight through.

Is it illegal to sit in the middle of the road while waiting to make a turn?

When making a right turn, you need to position your car as close to the painted white line or median strip as practically possible (or the centre of the road if there are no markings). Likewise, when turning left, you need to be as close to the edge of the road as possible. It is illegal to position your car in the middle of the road and block the following car from pulling alongside you.

What if an ambulance is trying to get past me at an intersection – can I run a red light to let them through?

The road rules say you must move out of the way of an emergency vehicle despite any other road rule – however, you need to make sure it’s safe first. If there’s a red light camera, it will snap you. You can challenge the fine though, if the ambulance is also visible in the picture.

When can I travel in a bus lane?

You can drive in a bus lane for up to 100m if you need to enter or leave the road – e.g. to turn left into another street or get to a driveway. You can also travel in a bus lane to get around an obstacle, or to overtake a vehicle waiting to turn right or do a u-turn from the centre of the road. However, you cannot stop to drop off or pick up passengers.

When can’t I drive in the right lane?

If there is a sign saying “keep left unless overtaking” then you should do so. What many people don’t realise is that, any time the speed limit is more than 80 km/h, you need to stick to the left, even if there’s no sign saying so. A few exceptions are:- when overtaking, avoiding an obstacle, turning right, doing a u-turn or if all other lanes are congested.

Am I ever allowed to cross a solid white line?

There are 3 situations where you can do this if it is safe to do so. First is if you need to get around an obstruction (e.g. broken-down car or fallen tree). However, a stationary car or slow-moving traffic does not count as an obstruction and you just have to wait patiently. Second is overtaking a cyclist, making sure it is safe to do so. Third is if there is a single white line on its own or a solid white line to the left of a broken line, then you can cross it to enter or leave a road (e.g. turning into a driveway on the other side of the road) or to get to an angle park on the other side of the street. If it is two solid lines next to each other, you can’t do this. Many drivers think that if it’s just a single white line then they’re allowed to cross it to overtake a car, but this is not the case.
