FEATURED PRODUCT - D80FEATURED PRODUCT - D80

One of the key advances developed for theD80 is Nikon's own high-resolution imageprocessing engine. Advantages inherited fromNikon ' s la te s t p ro fes s iona l d ig i ta l SLRcameras include color independent analog pre-cond i t ion ing and h igh-prec i s ion 12-b i t

digital image processing algorithms, which com-bine to produce natural-looking images that benefitfrom faithful color and tone reproduction. A newdedicated high-performance processing chip great-ly accelerates performance on all levels, whilealso achieving lower power consumption, assuringmore pictures per battery charge.

3D COLOR MATRIX METERING IINikon's exclusive 3D Color Matrix Metering IIensures accurate automatic exposure control forideal exposures, even in the most challenginglighting conditions.Consistently dependable exposure is the hallmarkof Nikon’s exclusive 3D-Color Matrix Metering II.Refinements for the D80 include its inheriting theadvanced exposure evaluation system from theNikon D2Xs and D200 digital SLR cameras. Bright-ness, color, contrast, selected focus area and

camera-to-subject distance information is evaluated, with the results referenced against the expansive

onboard database of exposure data from over30,000 actual photographic scenes, and the finalexposure value calculated - instantly. Variable-size center-weighted metering is also available,as are a choice of 11 spot meters linked to eachof the 11-area AF system’s area sensors.

PRECISION WHITE BALANCEAdvanced Auto White Balance (AWB) producesnatural coloration by matching white balance tothe light source of the shot. Other flexible optionsinclude a choice of six specific manual settingswith fine-tuning, (Incandescent, Fluorescent, DirectSunlight, Flash, Cloudy, and Shade), as well as apreset option for using a gray or white object asa reference.

11-AREA AF SYSTEMEnsuring con-s i s ten t ly fas tand precise fo-cus lock undervarying shoot-ing conditions isthe D80's re-fined 11-area

AF system. Adopting a refined version of Nikon'sadvanced Multi-CAM 1000 AF Sensor Module, this new 11-area AF system adds effective newfocusing options that will instill greater confidencein getting the desired shot. For example, while thesystem is able to use each of its 11 focus areasindividually, the center sensor can also be switchedto wide-frame operation for broader coverage.New Auto-area AF mode measures all 11 focusareas, automatically determines which of themare on the primary subject, and activates onlythose areas.

INSTANT START-UP AND IMMEDIATE RESPONSEThe D80 starts up in approx. 0.18 seconds, so its

ready to shoot immediately. Its short shutter releasetime lag of approx. 80 milli-seconds helps ensureinstant response while shooting, as does the fastand precise focus of the new 11-area AF systemwith AF-assist illuminator. Images are processedand recorded extremely quickly. Preview imagesare displayed instantly.

H IGH-SPEED CONTINUOUS SHOOTINGCapable of shooting a rapid 3 frames per secondin continuous bursts of up to 100 JPEG (FINE M-size or smaller) or 6 RAW (NEF) images, the D80makes it easier to stay on top of the action or tocapture those unexpected, yet precious pictureopportunities. Refinements to achieve this perform-ance include improved processing speed, optimizedbuffer memory handling, as well as higher datatransfer rates.

BROAD SHUTTER SPEED OPTIONSShutter speeds from 30 to 1/4,000 sec. can beselected manually or used in conjunction with theautomated program modes. Bulb and time optionsas well as flash-synchronized shutter speeds of upto 1/200 sec. further enhance the digital photoexperience.

MULTIPLE EXPOSURE This feature creates a single image within thecamera from up to 3 consecutive exposures, pro-ducing an effect that resembles multiple exposuretechniques used with film.

IN-CAMERA IMAGE EDITING FUNCTIONSExclusive in-camera image editing features underthe new Retouch menu help ensure consistentlysatisfying results and greater creative freedomwithout the use of a computer.D-Lighting automatically brings out detail to en-hance results and add creative flair, all whileo p t i m i z i n g o v e r a l l e x p o s u r e b a l a n c e .

t imes caused by f lash. Trim can be usedto produce smaller files for easy sharing or greaterefficiency. Image Overlay merges a pair of selectedRAW (NEF) files taken with the D80 to create anew composite image. Other options includeMonochrome settings (Black-and-white, Sepia,Cyanotype) and Filter Effects (Skylight, Warmfilter, Color balance).

LARGE WIDE-ANGLE 2.5” LCD MONITOR WITHIMPROVED MENUSA large new 2.5-inch LCD monitor with a 170-degree viewing angle and new dedicated zoombutton assist accurate and easy assessment ofsharpness by enablingimage preview at up to 25

times magnification (for L-size images). Convenientdisplays include RGB information as a singlehistogram display or as separate histograms foreach color channel.

You can be in the midst of a rugby match, orwatching a dragon boat race, or standing by theroad side waiting for the traffic light as the motor-cyclists moved past you, or watching performersrunning past you. Given these scenarios, manywill choose to freeze the movement of the subjectswith the use of a faster Shutter Speed, biggeraperture and relatively higher ASA. But for themore adventurous, one can consider blurring theimage.

When I mean “blurring” the image, I do not meanthe usual camera shake images where everythingis blurred due to slow Shutter Speed. This techniqueis called Panning where we pan the subject, makingthe moving subject appearing sharp in the imagewith a blurred background.

For those who choose to pan the subjects, theyare no doubt facing a high risk of failure. If onepans too fast or too slow relative to the speed ofthe subject moving past them, everything will beblurred. This means that many shots need to betaken in a panning sequence to ensure a betterrate of success. Yes, you got to set your camerato continuous shooting mode and shoot at least 4to 5 images per panning sequence.

The next question is how to get it done. One canfind that different photographers have different

If successful, you will be rewarded with greatstunning shots of the subject frozen in actionagainst a blurred background.

The “ingredients” for panning:

☛ Ideally, the subject is moving fast relative to where you are standing.

☛ Human subjects are usually better panning subjects.

☛ Look out for “clean” uncluttered background.

☛ Avoid the sky or white background as part of or whole of the background when you do panning.

☛ Set your shooting mode to continuous shooting mode.

☛ In my opinion, Shutter Speed of 1/15 of

a second is great for panning shots, with the use of Shutter Speed priority mode and the ASA set appropriately.

☛ Do not pan at subjects moving towards or away from you. This is not panning.

☛ Shoot wider, placing the subject in the middle of your frame as you pan, and crop the image later in the image enhancement software such as Adobe Photoshop.

With the above in mind, you can use this techniqueand tips in your quest to get those stunning imagesof action shots in a uniquely different way.

COMING UP NEXT...Coming up in the next issue, Steven Yee shallshare with you on how to get great shots with atechnique called Framing. He shall talk about theappropriate subject matter, what can serve as aframe and the execution of the technique. Lookout for it.

preferential settings on getting panning shots. Idid a couple of experiments with the differentsettings and eventually conclude that a ShutterSpeed of 1/15 of a second is ideal for panning. The mode can be set to Shutter Speed Prioritymode with the ASA adequately set to ensure correctexposure.

Usually in the day time, the ASA is set as low aspossible to avoid overexposure, since we are usinga slow Shutter Speed of 1/15 of a second here.If the camera light meter shows an overexposurewhen you do panning in the daytime with thelowest ASA, you can add a piece of Polarisor orNeutral Density filter. If you decide to pan in lowlight condition, say night time or dimly lit areas, you can use a higher ASA with the Shutter SpeedPriority mode with Shutter Speed set at 1/15 ofa second. The morale of the story here is to usea Shutter Speed of 1/15 of a second for panning.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO400, Shutter Speed Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/15sMy lens is not long enough, hence I did a panning of the performers and then crop later in Adobe Photoshop. As the performers ran,I noticed that they ran at dif ferent speed. This allow me to pan the motion of a group of performers who ran at the same speed, which resul ted in an image where a group of them appear sharp in the image while the rest of the per formers are blurred.

3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO100, Shutter Speed Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/15sMy favourite panning subject on the road is the motorcyclist as there is a human element in the image which makes the image more interesting than shooting justa mere machine. As what I have suggested, I pan the subject by placing it in the middle of my frame, to be cropped later in Adobe Photoshop. This will ensurethat I have a better rate of success. This is my panning concept of “shoot wider, crop later”.

I have to choose to pan either the bicyclist or the motorcyclist, and I chose the bicyclist. This delicate contrast shows the movement of the 2subjects relative to each other.

Stefen Chow, born 1980, describes hisapproach as “photography from the frontline”. The front line here is far from the edgeof the studio lights, up into the heights ofEverest, or the depths of cold of the Himalayasand Karakorams. He finds joy and satisfactionin juggling the risks of mountaineering andcapturing the moment. One of Singapore’sfew outstanding mountaineers; Stefen hasmade significant ascents in Nepal, Tibet andPakistan. Professional photographic artistsand photography aficionados have describedhis work as ‘personal, touching and awe-inspiring’.

Besides being a photographer, Stefen is alsoa motivational speaker and has given morethan 100 talks and workshops to corporations, schools and often invited to public dialogues, keynote speeches and mass media platformswhere he is often tapped for his experiencein the Himalayas. Through his audiences,Stefen has revealed the lesser known side ofmountaineering which runs in tight parallelsimilarities with corporate lifestyle andclassroom culture. His photographs runseamlessly with his presentations, allowingthe audiences to experience the mountainjourney in its entirety.
