FROM THE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On July 11, 2020, Catholics in South Carolina will mark the 200 th anniversary of the creation of the Diocese of Charleston. Our diocese was founded in 1820 to minister to immigrant Catholics scattered across Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. We were truly blessed by the Holy Spirit in the anointing of John England as Bishop of this territory. In him, we had a priest with a missionary spirit and a shepherd who truly embraced the Constitution of the United States and its freedom of religion. His foresight remains an inspiration today as we face new, yet familiar, challenges to our beliefs. Over the next year we will examine our history, celebrate our present, and apply the lessons of faith and tenacity we have learned to our futureas true disciples of Jesus Christ. Additionally, your parish will host its own events as we mark this important milestone in our history. I invite you to visit our diocesan website to learn about upcoming events and to participate in your parish’s activities over the next year as we commemorate and celebrate the Church in South Carolina as One Family in Faith. May God bless you, your parish and our diocese. In the Lord’s Peace, Most Reverend Robert E. Guglielmone Bishop of Charleston.
