Rising from the ashesA taste of city design in a country setting has seen the Waikerie Hotel Motel recover in style from a devastating fire.

An insurance payout from the 2011 blaze – which gutted the bar and gaming area – and government funding allowed the

community-owned hotel’s management to recently unveil its $4 million rebuild. The 103-year-old building has entered a new era of spacious design that capitalises on natural light and modern facilities.A $1 million Riverland Sustainable Futures Fund grant allowed the hotel board to pursue a more ambitious revamp.Another $100,000 from the South Australian Tourism Commission went towards establishing a dedicated function/conference area, which offers a bar service and the latest audio equipment. The hotel’s board of management undertook a careful planning process and opened the project to expressions of interest before narrowing a shortlist down to its ideal candidates.Board chairman Graeme Thompson said close collaboration with the chosen designers and builders had seen a wide range of improvements achieved at the site.“The feedback we’ve received has been absolutely fantastic,” he said.“I think people find it to be a much more open and inviting venue, and it’s far more user-friendly.”Construction began in March last year and an official opening, attended by Minister for Regional Development Gail Gago, was held on December 17.

Waikerie Hotel Motel manager Andrew Tyson said operating a venue that was receiving ongoing works had created many challenges, but he was happy to see the project completed in time for the busy summer season.“We were always focused on the end product, and unveiling the

“I think the final result is outstanding. It’s got all the aspects of a modern facility that are required in a hotel rebuild.”

rebuild during a holiday period has been good for us through the trade,” he said. What was once a split venue is now a cohesive entity offering bar, dining and gaming facilities on one level. Connectivity between the areas is achieved with the use of the same carpet pattern throughout, while a lift conveys patrons from the underground secure carpark to the main hotel and upstairs accommodation rooms.Disabled access is also assured via a ramp leading from the streetinto the hotel’s main entertaining areas. Designed by Folland Panozzo Architects and built by HT Constructions, the modernised venue embraces stark contrasts in colour and

takes full advantage of natural light available along the southern wall. Andrew said Folland Panozzo had been chosen because of its experience with rebuilds, including the Warradale Hotel in 2012.“It made things a lot easier because of their experience in hotel design,” he said.“I think the final result is outstanding. It’s got all the aspects of a modern facility that are required in a hotel rebuild.”New furnishings and light fittings have helped to update the venue and match up with the structure’s colour palette, while alternating mood lighting in the gaming room and behind the bar also remind patrons that they are enjoying some of the latest design features available.Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout the venue, and all of

the hotel’s electronics and audio can be controlled from one central system, allowing for late-night entertainment. The Oscars Sports Tavern and two outdoor areas provide for a relaxed and versatile atmosphere, with a retractable roof creating an indoor option for one of the courtyards. Meanwhile a big-screen television and wood-burning fireplace also add to a sense of welcoming hospitality.

A view of the hotel’s exterior at night helps to explain why locals and visitors are unable to resist its appeal for long.Small spotlights are dotted around the site’s corner frontage, exaggerating the looming walls and accentuating the palms that provide limited privacy – the main outdoor courtyard can be seen from the street and helps to entice passers-by. Meanwhile the doubling of entrances/exits to four access points has made the facility more approachable than ever before. The hotel’s 19 accommodation rooms also received a facelift and have been refurbished to a four-and-a-half-star standard.Operating as a separate project to the other facilities, the rooms were upgraded by local business AC Kleemann and Sons and attracted grant funding of $250,000 from the Federal Government’s Tourism Industry Regional Development Fund.

“The accommodation standard has been lifted to a standard that we have just not had in Waikerie before”
