Leveraging the Power of Your Network

Despite popular belief, networking is not handing out business cards. Networking is about relationships.

Today it is easy to confuse networking with the number of LinkedIn connections we have or the number of business cards passed out.

Networking is not about telling people what we do and how we do it. Networking is about relationships.

Networking and the ability to do it effectively is at TOC’s core mission for its registrants. Join us as Debra Burton Brown discusses effective strategies to realize the power of your network.

During the session this month, we’ll discover three essential ingredients for effective networking:1. When to promote yourself and when NOT to promote yourself.2. How to establish a solid networking connection.3. What to do with your networking leads.

This will be a fun, hands-on presentation. You are invited to bring and share business cards at this presentation. You will also receive and leave with additional networking tools for your toolbox. This Professional Development Program will cover competencies in leading people (developing others) and building coalitions (political savvy); and our TOC Annual Institute theme “Inspire,” “Empower” and “Shine.”

See you on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 for this exciting session!

Registrant Spotlight: Helen CastlePrepared by Ellen Roderick, TOC Secretary

You’ve heard the expression “a second chance in life.” Well, Helen Castle, Lead Human Capital Consultant, Employee Development, Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), is having a “second chance in TOC”, reaping the benefits of TOC as well as contributing to TOC’s mission. Delores Stuckey (PBGC Training Manager) hired Helen in late 2009 and it was then that Helen was introduced to TOC. She found it so beneficial but as can happen, the PBGC position was not renewed and Helen left Federal service. After HR positions with the American Diabetes Association and INOVA, Helen rejoined the Federal government, landing a position with CNCS this past year. One of her first priorities was to speak with her supervisor about CNS re-joining TOC. And so “the second chance” commenced in the spring of 2017.

Helen grew up in Elmira, NY and earned a BA (Psychology) from Westminster College and an MS (HRD) from Towson University which have served her well in the public as well as private sectors. In each position, she worked in a broad range of HR from performance management to human capital management to employee relations and development to organizational change. Her focus at CNCS is on leadership development, diversity and inclusion. Helen is on TOC’s Recruitment, Retention and Marketing Committee under the leadership of Meg Bowman, Chair. Helen is anxious to share TOC stories and seek out HR practitioners beyond the Federal sector.

When asked why she values TOC, Helen shared a number of reasons. While at the TOC Hershey Institute, Helen would attend a session of great interest and then return to her room later and put together a proposal for presenting to her supervisor. As with so many TOCers, Helen values the networking opportunities, the colleagues she has met, and the resources she has gathered. One of her challenges now is to establish an infrastructure to centralize all training functions in CNCS. So if you have ideas that can help, do seek her out at TOC. Helen is married to Christopher and has a 14-year-old daughter, Sophia, “going on 50.” Helen is a runner and enjoys cooking and quilting.

Do make sure and introduce yourself to Helen at a future TOC program!

Free TOC WEbinar October 24, 2017 @ 11:00 am ESTHave you ever thought that, as a trainer, you can learn something from a cartoonist? We’re going to explore that notion with the global best-selling author, humor columnist and national award-winning cartoonist – John Kolm! He is no stranger to TOC and is known to us as a successful CEO and owner of a team training business.

John will show us another side to creativity at work, as well as some of his cartoons, leading us on a journey of what creativity and innovation in a government workplace really means. Both are learned skills, not mysterious talents. You will explore creativity and innovation and how to use it to your advantage in your job and for career advancement, leaving with some practical insights into what creativity really is and is not.

This event is free to attend for all TOC Registrants. Watch for more details via email.

This year we’re going to keep this article simple. We’ll quickly report the monthly program evaluation scorecard and display a few charts here and there, and pretty much let the data speak for themselves, focusing on the Power of the Numbers.

WHAT DOES TOC MEAN TO YOU?

Each month, we set aside a part of our Newsletter to share some feedback and thoughts of our regis-trants. We believe this gives registrants and potential registrants an idea as to who TOC is and what we do for the training community.

“…By introducing me to countless, compassionate professionals who are more than eager to help me to develop professionally. The TOC AI also energized me to take new skills back to my organization and build

a better team. This was my first! I hope to be back.” (Todd Daugherty, Army CIO/G-6)Annual Institute

TOC leverages Human Centered Design at OPM’s Innovation Lab

In September, the Board invited past and current registrants to the Lab at OPM. The purpose was to explore strengthening our recruitment and retention strategies. Our goal is to ensure we are doing all we can to provide knowledge and networking opportunities to the government learning community.

The participants were engaged in exploring human-centered design process to evaluate TOC. The experience was amazing! The formal outcomes are forthcoming. Just know, we are invigo-rated and inspired to improve the TOC experience for current and future registrants.

If you have an idea you would like to contribute, please contactthe Recruitment, Marketing, and Retention team: Meg Bowman, Chris King, or Laniera Jones.
