Remember when the election seemed far out in the future? Me too, but time does fly when we are this busy closing loans. In any event, November will be a very interesting and important month for our country as well as our industry. Regardless of the election outcome, the mortgage and real estate finance industry will start seeing significant changes heading into 2013. Whether it is the multitude of regulations due to be published by the CFPB, restructuring of the GSEs, the return of the private MBS market, or the initial phase in of Basel 3, we will all be doing business quite differently a year from now. Having just returned from the national annual MBA convention in Chicago, the entire convention was focused on these changes and the impact to the industry. So what can you do to ensure that these changes and new policies don’t stifle our business and the momentum and resurgence of the real estate market? 1) Have regular dialogue and email correspondence with your elected representatives as we are doing at TMBA. The mortgage industry is as complex as ever before. Keeping track of these changes, much less the resulting impact of them, is difficult even for those of us employed in the industry. The legislators, both in Austin and Washington, want to understand how their constituents will be impacted. Remember, it is always better to focus on the impact to the borrower than the mortgage company— your message will be received better if you do so. 2) Make a contribution to the TMBPAC and MORPAC. When the Texas legislature reconvenes in just a few months, we will have several freshmen legislators in Austin, and with that, we anticipate some surprises that may require our immediate attention. While we have done a better job raising PAC funds over the past few years, we must continue to raise the bar, particularly in the face of significant industry change. Fortunately, it has been a very profitable year for the industry, so now is a great time to give some back to ensure our future viability and prosperity. 3) Stay educated on the issues. This is difficult right now, as everyone is incredibly busy and the changes are so voluminous. But we must stay on top of the upcoming changes and effectively communicate them to others if we are to influence the process and affect positive change. 4) Join the Mortgage Action Alliance. This free service, provided by the MBA, will send regular correspondence to your legislators updating them on the MBA’s position on the relative issues and the impacts to the constituent. Follow this link to join if you have not already done so. 2012 has been a much stronger year than most of us expected thanks to the extended refinance wave. 2013 will bring a new set of challenges and opportunities to be sure. The TMBA will remain focused on protecting the interests of you, our members, as we head into the next legislative session and throughout 2013. Having just returned from the national annual MBA convention in Chicago, the entire convention was focused on these changes and the impact to the industry. Keeping track of these changes, much less the resulting impact of them, is difficult even for those of us employed in the industry. The legislators, both in Austin and Washington, want to understand how their constituents will be impacted. I’m a WOOTENFU TU R E LEA D ER S

The TMBA Future Leaders Program is dedicated to identifying and cultivating the next generation of industry leaders by awarding several scholarships to the MBA Future Mortgage Leaders program.

The Scholarship was developed in 1993 and has since become the primary focus for the Future Leaders. Now called the Future Leaders/James M. Wooten Scholarship, the program was designed focus on developing new leaders who will guide our organization and our industry in the years to come.

Scholarship winners participate in a series of three seminars throughout the year focusing on leadership, business analysis and decisionmaking.

Scholarship applications are accepted each year by DECEMBER 1! If you are interested in becoming a Wooten and applying complete the 2013 application and return to the TMBA office by December 1st.

“I am proud to call myself a member of the 2012 Future Leaders Class and even more honored to join the list of Wooten Scholarship winners chosen by the TMBA. I have been in the mortgage business for 10 years and this is by far the best program I have been associated within this industry. The experience has continued to get better and better starting with the MBA Advocacy Conference in DC and the time spent on Capitol Hill to the Lincoln Leadership School in Gettysburg. I have been through countless sales and teamwork trainings in my career and none provided the experience that I got from one day on the historic battlefields of Gettysburg. We will end our year at the National MBA Conference in Chicago and I am very excited to work with my team and present in front of a panel of MBA experts. I don’t think you can put a price on the experience gained from getting to be the focus of a breakout session at the National MBA, and having true professionals in our industry judge us on our performance. The contacts I have made not only here in Texas but across the country from being part of the Future Leaders is just another added benefit to what has been a huge, positive step in my career. I look forward to wearing the “I’m a Wooten” badge at TMBA functions for years to come and serving on the same Future Leaders Committee that provided me with this opportunity.“
