BLUES' SHOCK WIN OVER ORMONDST. BERNARD'S FINISH ON TO BEAT NORTH

Carnival next week - Tuesday, Thursday, Saturda yBy GEORGE McTAGGART

University Blues scored a surprise win over leading team, Ormond, in lastSaturday's round, ending Ormond's run of ten successive wins.

St. Bernard's held second place on the premiership list with a sound winover North Old Boys, who could not match St. Bernard's finishing effort.

The 12th Australian Amateur Football Carnival will be staged at the Mel-bourne Cricket Ground next week - on TUESDAY, THURSDAY andSATURDAY .

Two matches will be played each day between the four competing states- VICTORIA, SOUTH AUSTRALIA, TASMANIA and WESTERN AUSTRALIA-- commencing at 11 a.m. and 1 .45 p .m . on Tuesday and Thursday and 11 .30 a .m .

and 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Blues started slowly but whenthey settled down they matched itwith Ormond except in front of goalwhere they continually fell down. This inaccuracy was the only reasonfor their 3-point deficit at the interval, for they were outmarking and out-playing Ormond generally .

But they improved in the thirdquarter and kicked four goals straightto be only a point down at three-quarter-time. Their accurate passingworried Ormond who really fell downin the final quarter, when they kickedonly 10 behinds, many from deliberateshots . The Blues added another 4 goalsin this term and won by 14 points.

North Old Boys had most of theplay for three quarters against St .Bernard's, but petered out in thelast term and were beaten by 28points .

North had trouble getting throughtheir opponents' defences, althoughthey hit back in the third term with 7goals after trailing by 25 points at theinterval and were a goal ahead at

three-quarter-time . But St . Bernard'skicked 6:3 to 5 points in the lastquarter .

Geelong put in a poor first half andwere 39 points behind Coburg at thehalfway mark. They made up someground after that but Coburg held onto score by 25 points .

Ivanhoe and Monash Blues wereengaged in an even game with Ivan-hoe holding on a little better to winby 7 points .

Old Paradians hopped off with a 2-goal lead over Caulfield Grammarians, but then Caulfield slammed on 4 goalsin 5 minutes and went right away towin by 11 goals .

Old Trinity lost their place in thefour when they were soundly beatenby Reservoir Old Boys, and Old Carey, with a 14 point win over De La Salle, are back in the top bracket .

University Blacks beat Kew by 19points, Collegians scored by a comfor-table margin over Melbourne Highand Old Scotch beat Assumption by 7goals .

SNOWS'STOP

Well me chinasit's your old mateback again ready torip into it oncemore .

First let me tellyouse all about lastweek . We won . Butjust by the skin ofou r

real . Had 'eart flutters most of the days un-

Oniy 6 points separated us when the finalhooter blew. Ya know the feeling . Onestraight hoof and we'd 'ave been even . But,we 'eld out and pulled it off .

The saddest part of the game was 'Megsey'got reported for biffing some squirt andcopped four weeks from the Powers That Beduring the week at Tribunal .

We'll miss 'Megsy' . He's real upset'cause he's not the sorta fightin' type . Justdid 'is lolly when this guy kept niggling'im most of the game .

I'm usually pretty tame on words aboutumpires but our ump last week was so badI didn't know where to start eomplainin'!Even me missus had a few words in hisshell pink ear when he left the groundafter the game.

Naturally, I contained meself and justpaid out ona him with the fellas when wecracked a few tubes after the game .

The old premiership flag is in me sightsagain . But I'll 'ave to really keep onto meboys to win again this Saturday . See thePink Comic give us an even chance to win .

After today's game we've got a 'do' onat the clubrooms . Give youse full reportsnext week.

Gotta tell you'se before I split, that I 'aha bludge last week cause of the powerstrike. What a life. All it meant was I gotto practice on time to really whip me teaminto action .

Members of the Coburg club weresaddened recently to learn of thepassing of former player, FrankSurgey . He was a member of Co-burg's 1937 premiers and championsside in "C" Section and will bemissed by all who knew him .

LETTER TO EDITORThe Editor ,

In the "Amateur Footballer" of 30th Juneit was claimed that a score of 13 .1 by CoburgJuniors "surely must be a record for goalsin one quarter" . Old Haileybury can cer-tainly beat that score . On 22nd May, 1971,we kicked 15 goals 1 behind in the thirdquarter against National Bank . After being11 points down at half-time, we went on towin by 68 points - 28 .18-186 to 17.16-118 .

BALL BRIEFS100 UP TO ON O .G .G .

The one-hundredth game comes up todayfor O .G .G.'s player Rod Brown. Rod mig-rated here from Queensland in 1967 withmany games of amateur football for Queens-land Uni . already under his belt and im-mediately he became one of the clubs mostreliable players . His ability to play in justabout any position made him particularlyvaluable, and the following year he wenton to win the club's award for best playerin the finals. Since then he has contributedto give great service to the club and nowis one of our leading players in the reserves .Well done Rod, and congratulations from allat O .G .G .'s.

PARKSIDERS 25 0Everyone at Parkside today congratulates

Norm Willoughby on playing his 250th gamefor the club . Norm has been one of thestalwarts of the club throughout his careerboth on and off the field .

His tenacious efforts on the field and histireless work with the administration of theclub has been a credit to him .

Norm, who has a senior best and fairestto his credit, is at the moment a mainstayof the Reserves back line . On the non-playingside Norm is proving an extremely capablesecretary and is continuing on with the finework he has done in previous years as acommittee man and social secretary .

Even though Norm causes many groansand moans when he produces his (long) listof suggestions and complaints at committeemeetings many important aspects of club or-ganization would surely be overlooked with-out his careful attention.

Once again congratulations Norm - go onand make the record for games one that willtake a lot of beating .

Page 18

He has played in every position on theground and has made the ball his objectivealways . We congratulate him on his achieve-ment and thank him for his tremendous con-tribution to Alphington and the V.A .F .A.

A.M.P . CENTURY

At long last, Rig Bell, well known for hisspeed and long accurate kicks from the half-forward flank, plays his 100th club game withthe A .M .P. today. Rig, affectionately knownas "The Rat", joined the club in it's fi rstyear in 1961, but has missed a few seasonsin the past 12 years through injury and un-availability .

Rig was the reserves coach in 1970-71, get-ting the team through to, the preliminaryfi nal in the first year and has been captainof the reserves on numerous occasions. Lastyear, after many good performances duringthe season, Rig was runner-up in the Re-serves best and fairest award .

Good luck for today and the future, Rig.Who knows? At this rate you might reachthe 150 by 1980 !
