The year was 1948 and Europe lay in ruins, this is when 7 Euro-

pean students, inspired to do something positive to avoid the destruction left by the war from ever happening again; they decided to take action and founded an organization with the vision of promo-tion of Peace and Unders-tanding between cultures. Driven by their vision, they met in Belgium and founded AIESEC. We are a global,

non-political, independent, not-for-profit organization run by students and recent graduates of institutions of higher education. We belie-ve with the right leadership and cultural understanding developed in young people, we will be able to achieve our vision. We don´t discri-minate on the basis of race, colour, gender, sexual orien-tation, creed, religion, natio-nal, ethnic or social origin.

Inner Journey Learning from doing – Our Global Citizen and Global Talent Program provides you with a clear purpose to go abroad, either to volunteer in social projects or to work in compa-nies. Working and living abroad brings along personal and profes-sional development to you as you will be learning through practical experience and directly immersing yourself to the way of life in the new country.

20

Page 21: OGX National Booklet

Reflection and Reinvention – When working and living abroad, you will be frequently exposed to things which are unfamiliar to you, which most of the time will cause you to have Culture Shock. After some time, you will start to reflect upon the things that you have experience and draw some conclusions on them, these conclu-sions might totally alter your previous beliefs and worldviews, this is the point where you reinvent your ways and start adapting to the new environment

Value Generation – Through constant Reflection and Reinvention, you will start to generate new personal values and beliefs, shed away some of your previous values or even strengthen the values you al-ready have. At the end of the day, the entire experience shapes you into a person who has broader worldviews and stronger values.

When you arrive, the AIESEC representative in the hosting country will take care of you; they will pick you up from the airport, help you in being indepen-dent with the new environment and integrate you in the local community. When you come back to Austria, we are providing a Reintegration Seminar for you, where you can share experiences with other Global Citizen/Global Talent Participants and give us feedback.

• What does an AIESEC internship not offer?

AIESEC does not offer tailor made Internships as a product, meaning we cannot offer you an internship at a specific place in a specific country at a specific time. Candidates entering our programs should be flexible on a variety of countries whilst not only looking for employment in large multinational companies, thou-gh these do exist amongst our Internship pool. AIE-SEC internships do help you gain professional skills but more importantly, they are a great opportunity to have an intense intercultural experience.

• What is the Outgoing Exchange Preparation Se-minar (OPS)?

The OPS is a one day AIESEC seminar, which is run by experienced trainers. You will be prepared for your internship and receive useful tips and information on topics such as dealing with culture shocks, do and don’ts when living abroad, communication flow with your coach when you are abroad, important policies of AIESEC’s exchange program, what to do in order to maximize your exchange experience. Furthermo-re, you will be able to share your thoughts with other people going on exchange soon. You do not need to pay for this seminar as it is included as part of your original exchange fee.

• How long does it take from the day I apply to the day I start my internship?

For Global Citizen program, it takes usually about 2 months. If you are more flexible in choosing the country and the social project which you will work in, the process will be much faster. For Global Talent program, it usually takes about 3 months. Again, the same principle applies, the more flexible you are in your choice of country and company, the faster the process will be.

After passing through selection you will be offered a contract for either Global Talent or Global Citizen. The contract is meant to confirm your participation in the program and that you understand about the pro-gram policies and payments. • Who will help me in my host country?

All the internships are based on a AIESEC local com-mittee nearby, which is there to help you during your internship. More concretely, the members of this hos-ting local committee organize your accommoda- tion, pick you up from the airport / station, show you around in the city and accompany you to work on your first day. In addition, they will integrate you into their ac-tivities, organize events for you and the other interns and help you get to know the people and culture of

your host country. If there should be any problems, there will always be someone to help you. We will keep in contact with you and support you in every possible way.

• Can I look at your internship pool/ database be-fore paying the fee and participating in the AIE-SEC Internship Program?

Yes, you can come to the Local AIESEC office to have a look through our database of Internships, it is best to contact your nearest AIESEC local office which you can find at the end of this booklet to book an appoint-ment first.

Depending on the program you are entering and the specific Internship you take there can be a require-ment for fluency in English. As an example many of the Internships in our Global Talent program will re-

44

Page 45: OGX National Booklet

quire you to communicate work in English, so for this program we will require candidates to be fluent. For our Global Citizen program we are more flexible on this as it is a very good opportunity to im- prove your English or other foreign language skills. However we will not require you to pass a TOEFL, IELTS or any other language certificate.

• Will I receive a salary during my internship?

For our Global Talent program you will receive a sa-lary, adapted to the living standards in the country, which will be enough to cover all of your living costs in this country. For our Global Citizen Program, sa-lary will not be provided, however most of the pro-jects provide accommodation and some provide food.

• Is there a selection process?

Yes, there is. You have to fulfil the requirements (poin-ted out in the programs´ descriptions at page 28 and

36) and pass our Review Board.

• What is the Review Board (RB)?

The RB is an interview during which we want to find out whether you are suitable for our program, how you perceive foreign countries, and whether your English skills are sufficient. This is important becau-se we guarantee certain qualities and competencies when we send students to work in our projects and partner companies.
