    TheBC Fire Code regulates underground oil tanks across the province. Twelve local governments within the Boards area have bylaws or

    policies that set forth additional requirements for the handling of underground oil tanks. This matrix provides an overview of those bylaws

    and policies that augment the regulation of underground oil tanks. This is for reference only, please refer to the actual bylaw or policy for

    more detail. Municipalities not listed rely on the provisons of theBC Fire Code completely and have no bylaws or policies on this topic.

    I the Fire Chie determines that itis impractical to remove an under-ground storage tank, the tank shallbe flled with an inert material. Pip-ing shall have the ends permanentlysealed by capping or plugging.

    A Registered Proessional Engineer (RPE) willtest the soil around the tank and piping orcontamination. I soil is contaminated, the RPEwill coordinate with the tank contractor or aclean-up plan.

    Hire a Registered Proessional Engineerto supervise the tank contractors work.The tank must be emptied and removedalong with supply piping.

    The tank may remain in the ground,provided soil testing is perormedthrough the base o the tank, andno contamination is ound.
