Who We AreIstituto Europeo di Design (IED) is the most

The Education PathwayThe learning will be organised into a number of

Marketing and Communication are two key factorsof any successful Fashion Brand. This one-yearcourse trains professionals capable of conceivingand managing integrated promotional strategiesand applying them to the current global and webmarket.

Florence, with a strong cultural and handicraftbackground in fashion as a social and localphenomena, initiates students to the reality ofthe contemporary Italian and Internationalfashion system. The specificities of this businesswill also be analyzed from the fashion productionsystem to the technical aspects of the products.

One Year Jewellery Design course is conceived andstructured as a comprehensive overview on theItalian protagonists in jewellery design:professionals, companies, trademarks, eventsand trade fairs connected with the jewel style.

The course will be divided in three mainareas:

1) Technical Propedeutical AreaPortfolio - This course aims at presenting students

all the necessary tools and techniques tocompetently present their creationsThe realisation of a project is envisaged.

Free-hand drawing - Students will have theopportunity of learning the main free-hand anddrawing from life representation techniques, bystudying dimensions and proportions.A final exam is envisaged.

Technical drawing - Students will be offered theconditions to realise a technical card on thejewellery they have ideated. Introduction of 2Dand 3D design, orthogonal dimensioning andprojections. A final exam is envisaged.

Methodology 1 - This course is targeted to

presenting. The world of jewellery from a designproject perspective by introducing studies onshapes and their manual modelling, semifinishedmaterials and working techniques. A final projectis envisaged.

Goldsmith lab - This course aims at highlighting tostudents the main goldsmitherytechniques needed to createprototypes required during adesign project. Qualifiedteachers support the students,teaching and helping themrealise their projects. A finalexam is envisaged.Computer - This course willoutline 2D and 3D modellingprogrammes, for the correctuse of the computer and theoptimal rendering of projects.The implementation ofRhinoceros, Adobe Photoshopand 3d Studio Viz software isenvisaged.

2) TheoryPropedeutical AreaGemmology - This course istaught by professionalgemmologists who will presentthe world of diamonds andother precious gems, by

combining theoretical lessons with practicallaboratories. Interventions will also be made onissues linked to the precious gems market andon the Italian and international worlds ofjewellery. A final exam is envisaged.

History of Jewellery - The history of jewellerynarrated by experts in this field, from the originsof adornments to the artistic jewellery of the1900’s, through styles, eras and techniques. Thiscourse encompasses integrative visits. A finalexam is envisaged.

Milan ground research - This course is geared atpresenting the new seasonal trends throughresearch and studies into all the latest visual andcultural stimuli currently present in the fashioncapital of Italy. A final exam is envisaged.

Art - The discovery of art in Milan and Lombardythrough architectonic, cultural and designitineraries.

Communication - Communication in the Italian andInternational Jewellery sectors: acommunications expert will outline the meaningand importance of communication today. Therealisation of a project and final exam isenvisaged.

Visits - Trips and visits to specialised trade fairsand exhibitions will be organised to present thepast, present and future of the world of jewellery.

3) Design Projects Realisation AreaRendering - This course is run under the guidance

of an expert designer and aims at presentingstudents the various pictorial techniques thatcan be employed in order to attain the bestchromatic renderings of their design projects. Afinal exam is envisaged.

Methodology 2 - This course presents all thecharacteristics and goldsmithery techniqueslinked to metals used in jewellery making: goldsilver and platinum. The course includes 3projects (Gold, Silver, Platinum), the creation ofthe relative prototypes and a final exam areenvisaged.

No Limits project - Designing jewellery using allkinds of available materials. The creation of aprototype and a final exam are envisaged.

Macro jewellery project - A design project for therealisation of a jewellery collection of large sizeditems. The creation of relative prototypes and afinal exam are envisaged.

Accessory project - Design project for therealisation of a collection of fashion accessories,with a strong goldsmithery impact. The creationof relative prototypes and a final exam areenvisaged.

Important jewellery project - A design project forluxury jewellery. The creation of relativeprototypes and a final exam are envisaged.

Virtual Jewellery project - Designing jewellerythrough the implementation of computer tools.The realisation of a book of images is envisaged,together with the creation of relative prototypesand a final exam.

Final Thematic project - This is the final synthesisof the year of study, which the students tacklewith all the technical tools they have acquired.The creation of relative prototypes and a finalexam are envisaged.

One Year Accessories & Shoes Design is anintensive course, conceived and structured toshape professional figures of Fashion AccessoryDesign giving an introduction to various roles ofthe field.

Full immersion method comprising theoretical andpractical classes; laboratories, workshops andseminars, meeting with companies operatingthe sector, visits to tradeshows.

The course trains future accessory and footweardesigners, preparing them with specific skillsthat will accompany all future project phases,from the initial concept, the feasibility of an ideaand the pathway of developing it into acollection. The creative process, the choice andelaboration of materials and colours, prototypetrails and confidently interacting withprofessional specialized in design andproduction. The design workshops envisage apropaedeutic analysis and methodologydevelopment approach; the study of formal,technological, functional and ergonomicaspects, the development of a project that goesbeyond the simple analysis of current trends inhe fashion sphere, the realisationmanufacturing products in line with theconstant changes in the market.

Stamp Lab - Making a stamp to be used decoratingleather by heat-print. Learning the technique ofartisan jewellery making developing a model inwax to be merged in bronze. Experimenting thestamp in Materials Lab.

Seams Lab - Analysis of the decorative seam-details in existing designs, learning the differentmethods of stitching by hand during lessons.Understanding the value and possibilities ofdecorative confection.

Design WorkshopsEyewear - Technique characteristics of eyewear,

studies of the target market. Analysis of suitablematerials.Designing an eyewear collection, adapted forindustrial production.

Watch - Technical and productive features;introduction to the components, movementsand materials used in watch design. Designing amini collection of watches.

Fashion Stylist - Introduction to the role of theStylist and the various typologies of styling.Developing a storyboard for a fashion editorialto shoot on a photographic set.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Classes will take place from January 2011 to December2011, 5 days a week.

LANGUAGEAll courses are taught in English.A high-intermediate level of language is sufficient to

understand the lessons (corresponding to levelTOEFL 450)

LIMITED ENROLMENTEnrolments are limited. Over the number foreseen, IED

does not accept further enrolments.Notice: enrolment is not valid until (besides the

Application Form) arrives to the school also thepayment of the enrolment fee (3.000 euro)

APPLICATION DEADLINEAdmission opens on March 1st 2010 and closes : on

December 3rd 2010 (for the January 2011 intake) andon March 4th 2011 (for the April 2011 intake)

ACCOMODATIONIED suggests to live in residential hotels or apartments

for the first month, and later on to rent an apartmentafter meeting other students and getting to knowtheir way around the city.

FEESTotal fee amounts to 11.000 Euro (3.000 enrolment fee

+ 8.000 tuition fee). Enrolment Fee must be paid assoon as possible in order to secure the place. TuitionFee must be paid before the start of the course, or,in some countries, before applying for the visa.

Fees include: all class works, lessons, use oflaboratories. Not include: accomodation and meals ,airfare, airport transfer and meals, particularequipping requested.

PAYMENT PROCEDUREFee may be made by swift (see bank information on the

application form) or by credit card.Payments must be made directly to the school. Other

forms of payment will be not considered valid.

WITHDRAWALA refund of the tuition fee will be made only in case the

Administrative Secretary Office receives an officialwithdrawal letter within November 15th 2010.Refund of the enrolment fee will be given only incase of written visa refusal.

COURSE CANCELLATIONIED reserves the right to cancel courses within

December 10th 2010. Students enrolled in a coursethat is cancelled will be notified by telephone ormail and should be asked whether they wish totransfer to another course or prefer a full refund (ofboth enrolment and tuition fee).

VISAInformation about Visa procedures must be obtained

by the nearest Italian Consulate. Please considerthat, depending from country to country, it takes aminimum of 30\60 days to get a student visa.

IED will provide the applicant with a certificate ofenrolment (in original) to be presented to thenearest Italian Consulate (the certificate ofenrolment cannot be issued before having receivedthe payment of the enrolment fee).

STUDENTS UPON ARRIVAL IN ITALYUpon arrival in Italy students must arrange an

appointment at the “Student InformationOffice”(SIO) for a personal meeting with the schoolstaff.

Foreign student residence permitImmediately during the first few days in Italy students

will be assisted by IED International Student Desk infilling-in any forms and guided in obtaining aresidence permit (called “Permesso di soggiorno”):a registration by the local police is necessary forforeign students (included E.U. citizens) living andstudying in Italy.

Sickness and Accident InsuranceIn case a foreign student does not have any private

international medical insurance, it is mandatory byItalian Law to obtain a “Sickness and AccidentInsurance”.

Official sources suggest “INA ASSITALIA” insurance(covering only hospitalisation).

Opening a Bank AccountStudents residence permit plus additional documents

are required by IED International Student Deskbanks to open an account. Upon arrival in Italy IEDwill advise students on the steps and procedure tobe followed.
