ACTIVITY With your little one, brainstorm as many exercises as possible that you have practiced over the summer. Work together to create a workout routine. You’ll want to be in tip-top shape as you prepare for the new school year. You could include arm circles, jumping jacks, squats, pushups, sit-ups, lunges and jogging in place. For an extension activity, you could record your routine and watch it back to see how you have improved over time.

LEARNING SKILLS Gross Motor Skills

Materials Paper, pencils, device to record (optional)

Get Moving activities are designed to either engage your child’s full body in a physical activity to start the day with a jump, OR to start the day planning for play, a critical area of development in organizational thinking.

Get moving

ACTIVITY Try playing Red light, Green light outside. One person can be the traffic light while the other stands at the other end of the outdoor space. When the traffic light says “Green,” the other person can come toward the light. When the traffic light says “Red,” STOP! Try variations such as hopping, crawling and twirling. Reflect and discuss with your child what other fun games you have done together over the summer.

ACTIVITY Let’s play a game of hide-and-seek today either with each other or with a favorite toy. Have your child find a secret place to hide while you count to 10 out loud. Then find your little one. You could always try reversing the roles as well, or you could hide a favorite toy of your child’s and provide clues as to where to find the toy.

SUMMER LEARNING SUMMER LEARNING FUN WEEKLY PLANSPRESCHOOL & PRE-K • GET MESSY

Get Messy is a section designed for your child to engage in sensory play. Sensory play allows learners to make sense of the world around them by taking in as much information as possible from an experience by using as many intake receptors as possible on their bodies. It allows information to absorb better and with more meaning.

ACTIVITY Let’s explore some bubbles! You could make your own solution with dish soap and water. Try to see how big you can make the bubbles. How far can the bubbles travel? Can you catch a bubble on your finger?

LEARNING SKILLS Science and Nature

Materials Dish soap, water; or bubble mixture, bubble wand, dish

ACTIVITY Let’s enjoy some waterplay today! Using some food coloring, you could change the color of the water. Ask your child what color he or she would like to turn the water and encourage your child to test his or her guess. Once the water is the perfect color, add plastic spoons and cups to explore.

LEARNING SKILLS Science and Nature

Materials Food coloring, water, containers, spoons

ACTIVITY Let’s enjoy an end-of-summer yummy treat! Try making s’mores with ooey-gooey melted marshmallows (or marshmallow fluff), soft chocolate bars and graham crackers. You could create a pretend fire to “heat everything up” or melt the marshmallow in the microwave. While sitting next to the pretend fire, reflect on your summer together. What activities did you each enjoy? What are some activities that you would like to try next summer?

LEARNING SKILLS Science and Nature, Creativity and Discovery

Materials Graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate bar, heat source, stick (optional)

ACTIVITY Let’s explore with seeds! As you are eating fruits and vegetables during the week, save a couple of seeds from each one. Compare the seeds you collected each day. Ask your child which seeds are the biggest and smallest. Can you sort them and put them in order from smallest to largest?

Some examples could include strawberries, watermelons, avocados, apples, zucchini, squash, oranges, lemons and beans. As an extension activity, if you planted seeds earlier in the summer, check your garden to see what has grown. Which plants grew the biggest? Which ones are the smallest? What is your favorite fruit or vegetable to eat from your garden?

LEARNING SKILLS Science and Nature, Cognitive and Mathematics

Materials Fruit and vegetable seeds

Get Focused is a time of day devoted to learning a specific skill. It is a time that is best for children to engage independently or with their parent to fully concentrate and build new skills through hands-on lessons.

Get Outside is a time of day designed to do just that—get outside and explore. Exploring offers children new ways to relate to their world and engage in physical activities and inquiry-based learning.

Get Outside

ACTIVITY Let’s get outside for a hike or walk! While taking a hike or walk, discuss with your child all the things you might discover while hiking, including plants, animals, bugs and people. Reflect with your child and reminisce about all the walks, hikes and adventures you have had together over the summer. If you took any pictures from your walks at the beginning of summer, revisit them. What has changed?

Get Connected is a time of day to connect with family members or loved ones in a variety of ways. Social and emotional connections are imperative to all learning. If a child does not feel secure and connected, they cannot engage appropriately and cannot learn effectively. So, have fun with these ideas for both virtual and personal connections!

Get Connected

ACTIVITY Talk with a loved one about a few things you are excited for in the upcoming school year. You could talk about your child’s new teacher, new friends or new adventures. For extension, you could create a new back-to-school daily routine and schedule.
