Ultimate Hikes operates guided walks on the Milford,

Routeburn and Greenstone Tracks and in the

Hooker Valley.

The Milford, Routeburn and Greenstone tracks

traverse Fiordland and Mt Aspiring National Parks

and the Hooker Valley is located in Aoraki Mt Cook

National Park. These three National Parks, in

addition to Westland National Park, make up

“Te Wahipounamu” (Maori for “the place of

Greenstone”), the area of New Zealand that has been

placed under UNESCO World Heritage Area status.

This brochure was printed on 9Lives paper stock, an environmentally sustainable material, and is derived

Introduction & History

Famous Kiwi mountaineer, the late Sir Edmund Hillary summed up the adventure;

“well-equipped and comfortable lodges guarantee a good night’s rest and experienced guides ensure a safe journey.

These walks are an experience that anyone will always remember.”

In the Footsteps of History...

Our guided walks attract a wide range of ages, with our minimum age

being 10 years and no maximum age limit! We have taken walkers in

their 80s on the tracks in the past. Whilst many of our guests are not

experienced hikers, they are often adventure seekers keen to face fresh

challenges.

The Milford, Routeburn and Grand Traverse (Routeburn-Greenstone)

Guided Walks have a reputation as safe and well-organised operations.

For many people, particularly those travelling solo, it is a chance to walk

in the wilderness, with like-minded people from around the world.

Well-appointed lodges provide excellent accommodation on all the

tracks. Comfortable beds with bedding supplied, hot showers and fl ush

toilets allow walkers to enjoy home comforts in a remote and scenic

environment. Excellent three-course meals are provided. Walkers carry

a medium-sized backpack containing their personal belongings and a

packed lunch. Backpack and raincoats are supplied.

Ultimate Hikes prides itself on its standard of service. Professionally trained

guides are carefully selected to ensure that every walker has a memorable

time. This is endorsed by clients who invariably refer to the “exceptional

walking, luxury accommodation and top guiding” they encounter.

We recognise that operating in this spectacular corner of the world

is a privilege and we are committed to minimising our impact on the

environment in many ways; by reducing, removing and recycling waste,

reducing energy consumption, increasing water effi ciency, using

sustainable products and supporting conservation initiatives. We take

great pride in providing walkers from all over the world with a unique

insight into the magic of New Zealand’s wilderness and work closely

with the Department of Conservation to upgrade and maintain the

tracks whilst ensuring their sustainability for the future.

Early pioneers left an enduring legacy when they carved their way

through rugged country in the late nineteenth century to create the

world-famous Milford and Routeburn Tracks.

Little were they to know their exploits would launch an internationally

famous adventure activity, attracting thousands of people every year to

Fiordland and Mount Aspiring National Parks.

The Parks today are the cornerstone of the South West New Zealand

(Te Wahipounamu) World Heritage Area and the Milford, Routeburn and

Greenstone Tracks are an integral feature.

Queenstown based company Ultimate Hikes applies decades of

experience to provide coverage of New Zealand’s prime walking tracks.

We have developed an international reputation, attracting more than

10,000 walkers a year.

The Milford Track was pioneered by Quintin Mackinnon whose name lives

on at Mackinnon Pass, a highlight of the fi ve-day walk. He was employed

to cut the track by the New Zealand Government, who recognised

the beauty of the area. The track was retained in government control

until 1992 when the licence to operate it was sold to Tourism Milford

Ltd (trading as Ultimate Hikes). Since then, extensive time, effort and

investment have gone into upgrading the facilities, providing a world-

class trekking venture.

The Routeburn and Greenstone Tracks had their beginnings in the

1860s, when a route through the Southern Alps to the West Coast was

earmarked for shipping gold from the lucrative Otago fi elds to Australia,

but it never eventuated.

The Routeburn Track was fi nally completed in the 1920s and is an

outstanding attraction. A private guided walking company was started

on the Routeburn in 1967 and the licence sold to Ultimate Hikes in 1989.

Like the Milford Track, a signifi cant investment has been made to create

a high standard of accommodation and facilities. The tracks traverse wild

and scenic mountain country, taking in spectacular views, waterfalls,

lakes and luxuriant forest which is so uniquely New Zealand.

Today, the season runs from November until April and professional guides

accompany walkers along the tracks. There is no pressure to keep up with

the fastest or walk with the slowest; guides are trained to co-ordinate an

entire group.

After crossing the emerald green Clinton River you walk up the valley to the Hirere Falls

lunch shelter. The beech forest becomes more luxuriant the further you go, until it releases

you onto the Prairie. From this meadow you can capture the true nature of the ice-carved

Clinton Canyon. It is a short climb to Pompolona Lodge from here.

Glade House to Pompolona LodgeDay 2

Your adventure begins at the Ultimate Hikes Centre, Queenstown where you will board a

coach to Te Anau, arriving in time for a light lunch. After lunch you’ll travel to Te Anau Downs

boat harbour, where a launch awaits to take you up to the spectacular northern end of Lake

Te Anau. From the wharf it is a short walk to the historic Glade House, where you will be

greeted with afternoon tea. Afterwards, you will have a group photo and your guides will

take you on a short nature walk to explore the surrounding area. After a hot shower in the

evening, you’ll have time to get to know your group, and enjoy a three-course meal before

retiring to your snug bed in the multi-share bunk rooms or private en-suite rooms.

Milford Track

Glade House

This is the most demanding day, especially in inclement weather.

The track leads to Lake Mintaro at the head

of the Clinton Valley, before climbing the

Mackinnon Pass in a series of zig-zags.

Take your time and enjoy the views.

At the top you will be rewarded with a

spectacular panorama and lunch in Pass

Hut. After descending into the Arthur Valley

you will welcome a hot cup of tea at Quintin

Lodge. That should be enough to refresh you

for the optional 90-minute round trip to the

Sutherland Falls, the world’s fi fth highest

waterfall.

Wake to the tranquillity of Fiordland and after breakfast experience a magical

cruise on Milford Sound. Watch for dolphins and fur seals and pray for rain, as you

have only seen Fiordland at it’s most incredible when the waterfalls are in full fl ow.

Following the cruise it’s time to head back to Queenstown. You have two options:

(1) travel by coach through the heart of Fiordland National Park, through the

Homer Tunnel and beyond, or;

(2) Take a spectacular helicopter fl ight across Mt Aspiring National Park back to

Queenstown. Sit back and let your pilot show you another perspective of the World

Heritage Area. Look down upon rugged peaks, sheer canyons and alpine lakes, the

perfect complement to your experience on the ‘fi nest walk in the world’. The fl ight

option is available at an additional cost and is dependent upon the weather.

Your fi nal day on the track. You’ll walk down the Arthur Valley to the historical Boatshed; after a

short break you will continue on past MacKay Falls and Bell Rock (which was carved out by the

river during a particularly violent fl ood) and on to the lunch spot at Giant’s Gate waterfall. The fi nal

stretch of the track follows tranquil Lake Ada to Sandfl y Point.

From here it is a short boat trip to the renowned Mitre Peak Lodge at Milford Sound; the fjord often

referred to as the eighth wonder of the world. The lodge presents the most striking view of Mitre

Peak, the famously photographed pinnacle that rises almost sheer from the Sound to a height of

1692m (5551ft). Here you will enjoy a celebratory dinner while relaxing with the knowledge that the

hard part is now behind you while the magnifi cence of Milford Sound spreads out before you.

Your adventure beings with a coach ride from Queenstown to the Divide on the scenic Milford Road,

stopping at Te Anau for morning tea. You will climb the wide and well formed track from the Divide

to the optional ascent to Key Summit. Here you can sit among the alpine plants and gaze down

three valleys from where water fl ows to three different coasts.

You then descend to Lake Howden hut for a hot drink and picnic lunch, before gradually climbing

through lush silver beech forest to the base of Earland Falls, quite a sight in wet weather!

You will look over the Hollyford Valley to the ice capped Darran Mountains before descending to the

splendid lodge at Lake Mackenzie where refreshments, a hot shower, three course meal and

a comfortable bed is waiting.

You leave the ancient forest draped in moss and lichen, and enter the alpine world of daisies, buttercups,

gentians and edelweiss. Here you have a full vista of the Darran Mountains across the Hollyford Valley,

which slices through Fiordland to the distant Tasman Sea at Martin’s Bay. After lunch at the Harris Saddle

(1277m), you can ascend Conical Hill for a panoramic view of the surrounding peaks. After walking around

Lake Harris you descend into the upper basins of the Routeburn Valley, with the towering mountains above.

Spend your second night at the beautiful Routeburn Falls Lodge where you will be treated to a special

celebratory dinner.

Take time to enjoy the dramatic landscape around the Falls,

before descending to the alpine pastures of the Routeburn Flats.

Your guides will take the scenic route through the meadows and

fi nd the deepest green pool for you to picnic beside. The track shadows

the river as it roars through a magnifi cent gorge before plunging beneath

the unyielding rocks at the Sump. From here it is a gentle walk through

columns of red beech trees to the Road End.

A coach will take you back to Queenstown, stopping at the small town of

Glenorchy on the way.

History of the Routeburn

A route through the Southern Alps to the West Coast

was mooted by local government in the 1860s during the

Wakatipu gold rush era. This route was not completed until

after 1920, with work being interrupted by World War 1.

Although the proposed port on the West Coast

never came to fruition, the Routeburn Track

became internationally famous as a magnifi cent

scenic alpine adventure.

Greenstone Valley

Historical NotesThe Greenstone Valley was an ancient Maori trail to reach

rich greenstone (pounamu) sources near Lake Wakatipu.

The stone was used to make adzes, gouges & superior

weapons. Europeans entered the valley in the 1860s in

search of gold and grazing land & the track was cut in 1881,

linking Lake Wakatipu and Martins Bay on the West Coast.

“The Routeburn & Greenstone are two of the most superb walking areas in the world. Dense rainforest with excellent tracks, sparkling lakes, mighty peaks & remote passes supply a sense of challenge without too great a feeling of danger.”

We recommend a couple of days off

between walks.

Enjoy a morning cruise on the magnifi cent Milford Sound before travelling by coach back

to Te Anau. Spend the rest of the day exploring the town that is the gateway to Fiordland

and stay overnight at a Te Anau hotel (bed only included).

Depart by coach from Te Anau to the Divide. Begin your trek along a well-graded trail. A brief detour takes us

above the bushline to view the Fiordland peaks and miniature alpine communities at Key Summit. Descend to Lake Howden for lunch before

continuing steadily upwards to the magnifi cent Earland Falls. Further along the trail, the snow-capped peaks and glaciers of the Darren

Mountains come into view before we make our descent to Lake Mackenzie Lodge.

Magic of the Milford TrackTraversing the heart of New Zealand’s wild

country, the Milford Track has long been

described as “the fi nest walk in the world”.

Since Quintin Mackinnon pioneered the route

in 1888, everyone from hardened trekkers to

novices have taken up the challenge.

The Fiordland National Park is the cornerstone

of the Southwest New Zealand World Heritage

Area. Walkers on the track to Milford Sound

encounter its spectacular deep lakes, luxuriant

forest and sheer granite canyons.

On a sunny day there is a postcard shot around

every corner. When it rains, torrents of water

cascade down the mountainside and you can

say you have truly experienced the magic of the

Encounter Guided Day Walks

You need to bring a small day pack, walking boots or shoes, a bottle of water, warm clothing and a waterproof jacket for changeable weather.

As you walk, your guide will tell you about the unique fl ora and fauna of the region, and the local history.

To get maximum enjoyment from your day, everyone is encouraged to walk at their own pace.

We begin at the Ultimate Hikes Centre, Duke Street, Queenstown and travel along the picturesque Queenstown-

Glenorchy Road beside Lake Wakatipu. We enter Mt Aspiring National Park and come to the beginning of the

renowned Routeburn Track. We have a leisurely 6.5km (4miles) walk up the wide and smooth track to Routeburn

Flats. At this point there is the option to rest by the river and have lunch in the alpine meadows; however the

majority of our walkers continue up to Routeburn Falls Lodge for lunch. Those that choose the 300m (980ft)

climb over 3km (1.9 miles) are rewarded with spectacular views and the comfort of Routeburn Falls Lodge (the

fi nal night’s accommodation on the multiday walks). This walk is more challenging but most of our walkers fi nd

the experience well worth it. We return along the same track.

If you are starting your day in Queenstown, meet at the Ultimate Hikes Centre and travel by coach along the shores

of Lake Wakatipu, through the sweeping landscape to the Ultimate Hikes Offi ce in Te Anau. If you are joining your

guide in Te Anau, meet at the Ultimate Hikes Offi ce.

We then take you along the shores of Lake Te Anau to the boat harbour at Te Anau Downs. Enjoy a hot drink aboard

an hour long boat journey to the northern end of the lake and the start of the Milford Track. Disembarking, we walk

1.6km (1 mile) to the historic Glade House.

Here we enjoy a scrumptious lunch from the kitchen. After visiting the small museum there, we follow the Clinton

River through rich Beech forest. Your guide will point out aspects of the forest and history to you along the way.

On the return, we walk up the Glade Burn Track for a fantastic view of Lake Te Anau before descending down a dry

river bed to the return launch.

From The Hermitage Hotel, we head to the White Horse Hill camping ground. Enjoy a stunning

8km (5 miles) return trek along the well-maintained track to the terminal lake of the Hooker Glacier, where

you will enjoy lunch. The journey takes in the poignant Alpine Memorial and passes over the turbulent

Hooker River by swingbridge to unsurpassed vistas of Aoraki Mt Cook’s south face and the surrounding

glaciers. There are a number of shorter walks around the village, all of different distances and gradients.

For those who want a little more, let your guide introduce you to one of the tracks in the native forest, or

even a sharp climb to fi nish your day. Whilst at Mt Cook, don’t miss out on the amazing Glacier Explorers

trip. Visit www.glacierexplorers.com for more information.

Ideal as an educational & hassle-free way of sampling a little of the magic of New Zealand’s wilderness.

Important InformationThe following is a list of essential equipment you are required to bring on your multiday guided walk. The bold items may be purchased

at reasonable prices from the Ultimate Hikes Centre in Queenstown to reduce the need for you to carry them throughout your holiday.

Items highlighted may be borrowed free of charge.

Each day you will carry a backpack containing

your personal belongings and clothes, your

sleep sheet, picnic lunch and on the Routeburn

Track only, your towel (again provided for you.

On the Milford Track, towels are provided at

the lodges). If you adhere to our equipment

list, your pack should weigh approximately

5-7kg (10-14lbs). Keep your pack as light as

possible whilst taking the essentials to

enhance your experience; hand laundry

facilities are available in every lodge.

There is no facility for transporting your

pack between lodges.

Guides & Safety

Your guides are trained outdoor

enthusiasts who will explain all about

the area. They pride themselves on

their safe, effi cient and friendly

service and provide everything

from a hot drink at lunch to

an evening briefi ng on the

next day’s walk. They are

trained in fi rst aid and are in

constant radio contact with

each other, the lodges and our

Queenstown/Te Anau/Mt Cook bases.

Your safety is of paramount importance

and your guides may have to adapt the day

depending upon fi tness levels and weather or

track conditions. Whilst they will make every

effort to meet your needs, please adhere to

their professional decisions if required.

In some cases, the fully funded New Zealand

Government accident compensation scheme

known as ACC (the Accident Compensation

Corporation) will cover medical and other costs

related to a personal injury incurred while in

New Zealand. However, we can not guarantee

that such costs will be covered by ACC, and

HIGHLY RECOMMEND all walkers carry their

own medical/travel insurance while on our

walk to cover medical and related costs

(eg. helicopter off the track, hospital care,

accommodation, missed fl ights, etc).

Track Conditions & Fitness Requirements

Our walks are neither easy nor diffi cult

as each walker will have a different

experience/expectation depending upon

previous experience and fi tness level.

They are a challenge which people of all

ages and abilities will relish. To enjoy

your experience, you need to be able to

carry your backpack (5-7kg/10-14lbs) for

4-8 hours over 10-21km (6-13miles) of

sometimes uneven track each day. We

encourage everyone to walk at their own

pace, it is not a race and we want you

to enjoy it. There is no pressure to keep

up with the fastest walkers and there is

always a guide at the rear of the group.

The track surface varies from smooth,

well formed paths to rough terrain broken

by rocks & tree roots. There are steep

rocky downhill sections and you may have

to cross small streams and wade in deep

water after heavy rain. We recommend

that you wear hiking boots, which provide

fi rm ankle support. Walking poles are

also recommended and available for hire.

A reasonable level of fi tness is required

and if you are not a regular walker, we

suggest that you begin a daily walking

regime 6-8 weeks prior to departure.

Gradually increase the distance that you

walk, carrying a backpack. Staircase or hill-

climbing will leave you better prepared.

The minimum age is 10 years. If you are

over 70 years, it is advised to consult a

doctor to check your physical fi tness.

corners of New Zealand, using professional guides and excellent accommodation in well appointed lodges.

Here’s what others are saying about...

Do it!!! I really can’t recommend this

company highly enough. Words fail me.

It was such an incredible experience.

The scenery along the Milford Track is

absolutely stunning, and every aspect

of the Ultimate Hike guided walk is

top-notch...

World Traveller 079 (trip advisor) Boston, USA.

This was a 5 star experience. Guides

were incredible, food was top notch

and the ensuite accommodation was

very comfortable - the best beds

in my NZ holiday. The scenery was

magnifi cent...

Charwood 70 (trip advisor) Northern Territory, Australia.

I was much better able to enjoy the

fabulous scenery and physical exertion

having slept well, and carrying only

a small pack; and after a day spent

chilly and wet, or dripping with sweat,

the simple delight of a hot shower is

impossible to exaggerate.
