On January 4, 2013, Reba celebrated her 100th birthday! First she had a small party at the facility, then went out to eat with her family. Reba was born in Isabella County on a farm near Blanchard, Michigan. She had one brother named Chester. Reba was only 4 years old when her mother died. Reba liked helping her father around the farm and says she was never afraid of hard work. She attended a country school and
recalls that when she was in the 7th grade her teacher invited the girls to form a sewing club. Knitting, embroidery and sewing became a life long passion for Reba. She met and married Russ Steers and they had one son, Leo Gene. Russ ran an auto repair shop and Reba helped him with the business. During WW II she found work in a factory and continued to work in shops in Eaton Rapids and Holt. When they retired they moved to Harrison, Michigan but they didn't slow down much. Besides running a bowling alley, they spent their free time fishing, raising horses, and riding quads and snowmobiles.
Before coming to JCMCF, Reba lived for a number of years at the Jackson Friendly Home. Besides her son, she has 4 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Until she started losing her vision, Reba liked doing crossword puzzles and word searches. Her grand-daughter Kay remembers playing many lively games of Dominos, Sorry and Scrabble with her. Her grand-son Jeff says Reba was one of the best Scrabble players he's ever seen. Please stop by the Cozy Corners Neighborhood and congratulate Reba Steers for being our April Resident of the Month.

April 1: Happy April Fools’ Day! Resident Council will meet today. Everyone is welcome to come on down and join in.
April 5: Ice Cream Social and, hopefully, warm weather! Stop by the Main Dining room and enjoy some of our great ice cream and fresh popcorn.
April 8: It is Birthday Party time! Virginia will play the piano for us and there will be scrumptious birthday cake just waiting to be shared.
April 9: We are off to bowl a few frames at Airport Lanes for the last time this season. If you are a bowler, come on out and join us.
April 17: Back by popular demand, we are going out to lunch at Red Lobster. This is
a favorite destination so get your name on the list early. Contact your Activity Assistant if you are interested in attending any outing. April 19: Time for David’s Cooking Show! Have a recipe you would like David to try? Have a hankering for something in particular? Let David know what it is and he’ll see if he can do it at his cooking show. Come on down to the Main Dining Room. Not only do we get to watch David prepare a delicious treat, we get to taste test! It is always a fun and delicious time!
April 25: We are going to Firekeeper’s Casino. Sign up now...this trip fills very, very quickly.

sounds good to me! May 24: Hopefully, spring will have sprung by now. We are planning an Out & About trip to see some springtime green. While we would love to take every Resident on every outing, it is just impossible to do so. Please know that the Activities Team keeps track of everyone that attends an outing and tries to be as fair when assigning the
outings. If there is an outing that you would like JCMCF to try out, please tell your
Activity Assistant . We are always looking for new places to go!

David recently treated us to this delicious snack at last month’s ‘David’s Cooking Show’. It was a hit! We thought you’d enjoy it, too!
Smoked Salmon Croquettes with Home-made Tartar Sauce Croquettes:
1 pound smoked salmon (hot smoked fully cooked) 4 russet potatoes, peeled and diced 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil ¼ cup finely diced onion 2 tablespoons light mayonnaise 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon dried parsley 1-2 Tbsp Sriracha hot sauce or your favorite hot
sauce to taste, optional Salt and pepper to taste (about ½ tsp each) Freshly cracked pepper Canola oil, for deep-frying 1 cup all-purpose flour 3 eggs, beaten 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
Place the potatoes in a pot and cover with salt water. Bring a boil and cook until fork tender, 10 to 15 minutes, drain and cool to room temperature (or refrigerate for about 20 minutes). In a large mixing bowl, mash together the salmon and potatoes then stir in the mince onion, mayonnaise, mustard, parsley, hot sauce to taste, if using, and some salt and pepper. Refrigerate for about a ½ hour. Heat canola oil I a deep fryer to 375 degrees F. Roll the chilled potato mixture into fish-stick shapes or little balls about the size of hushpuppies. Dip the sticks/balls in the flour, then into the beaten egg, and then coat in the panko. Fry the croquettes a few at a time in the hot oil until crispy and golden brown, about 3-4 minutes. Spicy Tartar Sauce:
1/2 cup light mayonnaise 2 tablespoons finely minced onions 2 tablespoons sweet relish 1 tablespoon capers, roughly chopped 1 tablespoon fresh (or 1tsp dried) dill, chopped 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1 teaspoon whole-grain Dijon mustard Zest and Juice of ½ lemon Salt and pepper to taste
For the tartar sauce: mix together the mayonnaise, onions, relish, dill, vinegar, mustard, and lemon zest and juice in a large bowl and season with salt and pepper if desired.
