PRESIDENT'S CORNER

October 2015

As any of us who run a business knows the success of that business is largely dependent on the quality of help you have. I want to thank all the people listed to the right for their tremendous help making ASA

Houston a success!

On page 5 of this issue of Shop Talk is a great article by Cyndi Herzog, owner of Accurate Automotive. In it she talks about the necessity of planning for the unexpected life challenges that we know will happen to all of us eventually. (Funny how they can be unexpected, but we know they will happen.) Over the past few years we have been through several of these challenges and I can assure you that better planning would have greatly reduced the stress and fear that came along with them. As business owners it is our responsibility to plan for the future and not just flounder around from day to day.

Speaking of planning for the future; we will need good technicians in the years to come, either as our business grows or current employees leave for whatever reason. ASA Houston is working in partnership with San Jacinto and Houston Community Colleges to form a work study program that will feed our shops with a steady influx of young men and women who want to make the auto repair industry their career. This may not cure your need for a qualified technician today, but as good business owners we must look to our future needs too. See page 5 for details.

Remember, this is YOUR ASA. If you have suggestions or ideas about how we can better serve the membership please let us know. If you want to take a more active role in making our chapter better and improving our industry please contact me about becoming a part of the board or a committee.

Our board meeting will be October 6th, you are invited to join us as we discuss the future of this Chapter.

John MillerFreedom AutomotiveASA Houston Chapter President

ext month's speaker will be Chuck Stasny who is an active ASA Board member, owner of one of the largest NAAMCO transmission shops in the nation and has over 40 years of maintenance experience. This will be a great meeting to bring your technicians because Chuck will explain torque converter and transmission operation.

Provide helpful scanner tips that will allow your techs to quickly distinguish between transmission and drivability problems. You will learn how to keep your customer's transmission in tip-top operating condition. And, if you do need to replace a transmission, you will be learning critical steps necessary to keep that vehicle from returning to your shop.

SEPTEMBER MEETING HIGHLIGHTSWE WERE TESTED AND TAUGHT!

Paul Travis with Hubert Glass Oil was this month's guest speaker. Paul opened with a test asking several oil related questions which were well explained

during his presentation. I am sure Dan Butler would be happy to know that Konrad Delong with BG Products was the winner.

The presentation began by con-trasting today's oil requirements with those of past decades. The obsolete oil specifi-cations reminded me of a

simpler time when most oils were divided into two categories - one for gasoline or spark engines and one for diesel engines. Now we have oils that address concerns that were non-existent in the past.

Paul explained that oils not only lubricate, but also provide cooling, deposit control, essential sealing properties, reduce friction and wear, and prevent oxidation. As environmental regulations become more stringent, engine operating demands increase which requires a more robust engine oils. Review the chart, GF-4àGF-5, on the left to understand how the increase in requirements has moved the GF-4 to the current GF-5 classification.

Current standards such as API SN & SM and ILSAC GF-5 are already dated. As automobile manufactures make design change improvements, so must oil suppliers. It is predicted that more than 50% of new passenger cars sold by 2020 will be equipped with GDI or TGDI engine technology. These engines feature increased power density, squeezing more performance out of a smaller package. However, they have the adverse effect of running hotter and harder than conventional engines, placing the oil under more stress. New oils to protect these operating conditions are already under development. The most recent specification, GF-6, is intended to further increase fuel economy while improving wear protection. Also referred to as PC-11 designation, these next generation oils are processed from superior base oils that further reduce emission, reduce engine oil aeration and improve BIO fuel compatibility.

If you have any questions, Paul Travis can be contacted at [email protected].

Do you need technicians?

We all fight the same battle of trying to find, hire and retain good technicians. I see no reason for that to change in the next few years if we don't do something to make it change.

ASA Houston has teamed up with Houston Community College to create a work study program where students in the Automotive Technology program will work in our shops as they go through the formal training. After graduation these new techs will work for our shops for at least 2 years to repay whatever help we gave them in tuition and tools.

This is a great chance to get young men or women into our shops, train them in cooperation with HCC and end up with qualified employees as a result.

The first step is to join us at the Lunch and Learn to be held at HCC on October 29. This lunch time meeting will give us, and the students, a chance to meet each other. You will get a chance to interview and recruit from a pool of about 100 students.

If you are interested in participating in Lunch and Learn please contact Chuck Stasny at [email protected]

isagreements, Divorce, DDisability & Death. Never going to happen to any of us

right? Sure because we are in the “FIX IT” business.

We can fix anything!

These 4 major life events not only cause personal trials, they also cause major business challenges. Nobody likes to talk about these things. And I bet none of these things are on the day planner when they happen. Most business owners do not think about these or put polices or plans into place in the beginning. Many wait until the crisis is upon them. It is imperative that you put together a detailed and legal plan that would address each of these almost sure to occur experiences.

Disagreement. Yes they happen. While you and your business partner may have gotten along great for all these years, but STUFF (a nice “S” word) happens. What if any of the other 3 D's happen to your partner? Do you really want their spouse or children as your new business partner? Do you have a Partnership Agreement that clearly defines what happens in each case and protects both partners? Protecting your partnership has so many components, I strongly encourage you to seek legal advice from a firm that specializes in partnership agreements

Disability – is probably the toughest of

the 4 D's. There is no time line for “back to normal” or closure. If it is you that becomes disabled – temporarily or permanently – how will your business continue? If you provide daily hands on skills this could have a major impact. If your spouse works in the business disability could have a double whammy affect. Both of you will be out and limited on the day to day operations. Yes there are all types of Disability Insurance however none of them can replace YOU, your expertise or your time.

Death. Death often can be sudden. My mother who was independent, walked into the hospital and was told “No problem” she would be out in 48 hours. Immediately she lost the ability to speak. As a very private person, she never discussed these things and we always thought she had it all lined out. We could not ask her very important questions that we needed to know in order to take care of her business. No one knew her passwords for computers & banking. Our businesses live on computers now and those helpful machines can become a fortress of frustration. Do your bank & investment accounts have another person who can access them? Extra capitol afterwards to put things into place can make the difference in keeping the doors open. A current will is IMPERATIVE; probate already takes way too long and not having a will makes the time line much longer and

more expensive. Most businesses simply cannot hold on that long. But what if you don't die? A Power of Attorney can save your business and make life much easier for a struggling spouse or partner.

Divorce – Happily Ever After? NOT!!! Yes I save this for last. I am the Ex- Wife who got the business. Divorce is already a complicated personal nightmare and brings multiple challenges when you own a business. If you both work at the shop, divorce opens a huge can of worms. It not only affects you and your family, it affects your staff. Loyalty and concerns about their own financial future will be a part of the fallout from your divorce. If you have other family members that work at the shop, the domino effect will take its toll. Remember, in Texas, you are not 50% responsible for the debt; you are 100% responsible.

Again each of these dynamics are factors in our lives and businesses. I sincerely encourage each of you to take the time to evaluate what you have in place to protect you and your family if any of these should happen to you, your spouse or business partner.

Optional Ending - When offering to write my feelings on this, I was asked about the 5th D...Dumb Stuff. My answer to that is – We can fix a lot of things but we can't fix stupid and I don't know if there is an insurance product to protect against that!

October 2015

October is Car Care Awareness month which makes for the perfect time for your shop to promote to consumers why taking care of their

car is important—if not vital. As some of you may know from attending last month's meeting, the Automotive Service Association of Houston will be partnering with Harris County Sheriff's Office, AAA Texas and Safe

Kids Greater Houston for their third annual Maintenance Matters Car Clinic.

Vehicle owners are invited to bring their vehicles by the Willowbrook Burlington Coat Factory for a free 38 point inspection which will be followed by a battery check by AAA Texas and then a child's seat safety inspection.

As the millennial generation is now beginning to enter our clientele list, it is important to promote brand awareness of the Automotive Service Association to them. Reaching out to the community has never been more vital for business success as it is today—and still has the added bonus of 'I did a good thing today'.

The event will be promoted through various media outlets such as television like last year, but with the addition of ASA Houston Chapter radio hosts! A special thank you to John Miller from Freedom Automotive with Auto Mojo Radio, Skeeter Lothringer from Skeeter's Auto with the Texas Car Doctor, and BG Product's Konrad DeLong with In Wheel Time.

We need your support to help make this venture a success. Please contact Nancy Adkins to sign up at [email protected]
