MORE than 40 workers at the SMRC waste recycling plant in Canning Vale could lose their jobs after the WA government ordered the place to shut within weeks.

Administration offi cer Helen Selleck says it will be the second job she has lost in two years.

“I left retail in the hopes of more security in a government position and it’s upsetting,” she told the Herald.

“I think we do a brilliant job here reducing landfi ll and now that they’re looking at shutting us down I’m worried about the impact of that decision not just on staff but on the WA environment.”

She says the Barnett government has sent a clear message: “They don’t care about the impact on the environment, which is upsetting.

“I’m surprised by the decision but encouraged by the support from the community for keeping the facility open.

“I hope the DEC comes to its senses and puts the interest of the environment and the community fi rst and let us continue the work we’re doing here.”

Meanwhile, WA local government association chief Troy Pickard, the mayor of Joondalup, says there is no guarantee the DEC will allow the SMRC to re-

open even if the odour issues are addressed.

“The closure of this facility will have a signifi cant impact on our rate of recycling and has potential ramifi cations for the waste treatment industry in this state,” he said.

LEEMING locals have told the Herald they’re “cautiously optimistic” over news the SMRC waste composting facility is to close.

They say cork-popping is on hold till the SMRC’s appeal against the WA environment department decision to shut it down is heard and, they hope, dismissed.

Canning Melville Odour Action Group chair Rod Petterson wants an apology from Melville city council for allowing the odour problem to go on.

Like Fremantle, East Fremantle, Cockburn, Rockingham and Kwinana, Melville is a part-owner of the SMRC and its plant.

Melville mayor Russell Aubrey isn’t in an apologetic mood, saying the council has diligently sought to pursue the highest environmental goals set by the WA government.

Victims“I believe the city, its SMRC

partners and their ratepayers are all victims,” Mr Aubrey says. “If there is a need for an apology it should come from the state government.”

Lawyer Mark Blundell, who’s lived in Leeming for nine years, says everyone has a different way of describing the smell.

“To me it’s like a sour old rubbish bin,” he said. “It’s immediately offensive, and immediately recognisable.”

He admits to having been surprised by the department’s decision.

“I’m being realistic and a bit cynical, because nothing had been done for seven or nine years.”

He says DEC offi cers investigating odour complaints over the past six months had, for the fi rst time, applied stringent rules which the plant had breached.

He compared the credibility and thoroughness of the fi ndings to expert criminal evidence.

Rob Skipworth, who lives about 600m from the plant, says

• Rod Petterson and Leeming neighbours have put up with the odour from the SMRC plant for years—but not for much longer.

the smell is like sticking his head in a wheelie bin.

“For the past month it’s almost been a daily occurrence Some days, I come home to it, shut my doors to it at night, and wake up to it.

“It gets depressing, you never know if you can invite people over.”

Phil Nixon lives about 1500m away and says the odour can strike at any time, day or night.

“We do a lot of barbecuing, as families do, and we have friends who invite us over to theirs,” he says.

“We would like to invite them over to ours, but we haven’t been game to host people recently.”

He says his wife had developed a condition where her face became hot and irritated when hot air blew through the house.

“You have to shut off the air-con because otherwise it blows in the hot air: It’s an impost on our quality of living.

“We’re delighted. There should be no grounds for appeal but if there is then something is really fi shy.

Jim Newton, who’s lived in Leeming for 22 years, agreed the smell makes him think twice about having the family over:

“All credit to Rod [Petterson], he’s doing a lot of work. We all appreciate what he’s done for everyone.”

No joy yet for giant killers

SOUTH Metropolitan Regional Council members have unanimously slammed the Barnett government for ordering the closure of their waste recycling centre in Canning Vale.

Residents now face higher waste fees, effectively paying for their rubbish collection twice; to cover both landfi ll penalties for green-lid bin waste and millions of dollars in loans, due in 2023, which will be lost if the shutdown appeal fails.

Fremantle council CEO Graeme Mackenzie described the two-week closure deadline as impractical.

Fremantle owes the SMRC $4.3 million in relation to the recycling centre, which is nine per cent of the total liability shared amongst member councils.

Melville owes $16.1 million loan, equating to 33.6 per cent of the total liability.

Mayor Russell Aubrey says he is “very disappointed” with the government.

“The SMRC and the councils supporting it were doing the right thing by the environment,” he says. “Without any support to the councils and their communities are trying to meet state government policy positions.”

Melville’s review of its waste services, which was due in the coming weeks, is now on hold pending the outcome of the SMRC’s appeal.

Cockburn council has $12.9 million outstanding, 26.9 per cent of the total loan liability.

CEO Stephen Cain says the decision came as surprise.

“The SMRC and the member councils had been, and remain committed to, improving odour management from the plant,” he said.

“There is no desire to impact on the amenity of the surrounding community, and additional odour treatment solutions were being developed.”

East Fremantle mayor Alan Ferris is appalled.

“Higher levels of complaints

by BRENDAN FOSTER

COCKURN deputy mayor Kevin Allen (right) says two local Liberal MPs who’d pushed for the SMRC to close its waste recycling plant are more interested in “saving their arses” than the environment.

Last week the WA environment department gave the South Metropolitan Regional Council facility in Canning Vale 10 weeks to shut.

Riverton MP Mike Nahan and Jandakot MP Joe Francis had lobbied premier Colin Barnett to shut the plant because of ongoing stench that affects their constituents.

“You’ve heard of that movie Dumb and Dumber, well these two blokes are worse than that,” Cr Allen angrily told the Herald. “The Barnett government’s zero waste policy is now in tatters”

Cr Allen says the MPs, who represent two of WA’s most marginal government seats (Jandakot 1.8 and Riverton 2.0)

about the odours from Cockburn Cement have, for example, not prompted a similar response from the DEC,” he noted.

His tiny council has a loan liability of about $900,000.

There’ll be no immediate impact, but charges are likely to increase in the future he warns.

Meanwhile, member councils will meet Thursday night to discuss the fallout.

SMRC acting CEO Tim Youe wouldn’t comment on where rubbish will now go.

Rockingham mayor Barry Sammels, whose council owns and operates its own landfi ll site in addition to its stake in the centre, says his council has not been approached to take neighbours’ municipal waste “at this stage.”

SMRC furyCouncils warn closure means landfi ll price hikes

But he added Rockinham had the capacity—and the desire—to do so.

The SMRC stated in a media release that its closure will result in 60,000 tonnes of municipal waste now being sent to landfi ll.

However, 2009/10 was the last time the SMRC released a detailed breakdown of how much waste it received and recycled.

That year just 54 per cent—46,488 of the 86,069 tonnes—of green-lid bin waste received was turned into compost.

Last year, member councils sent approximately 60,000 tonnes of green-lid bin waste to the RRRC. Based on the 2009/10 fi gures, just 32,400 tonnes was recycled and 27,600 of it sent to landfi ll.

are simply getting twitchy after making promises in 2008 to fi x the odour problem.

“This is about a couple of guys that are more interested in saving their arses and if people think this is not about a couple of hundred votes, they are bloody dreaming,” he said.

Mr Francis dismisses Cr Allen’s criticism as, “rubbish.”

Cr Lee-Anne Smith—who is standing for Labor against Mr Francis—is refusing to back her council colleague’s criticism.

“The participating councils including Cockburn need to accept responsibility,” she said.

Decision stinks: Allen

herald lettersBig wooden boxes?WE are not going to be able to attract consumers, visitors and retailers to Fremantle, unless we urgently build a modern central shopping complex to compete with Phoenix, Kardinya, Garden City and others not too far away.

My suggestion would be to bulldoze and redevelop the entire block surrounded by Queen, Cantonment, Point and Adelaide Streets, even across Point Street up to Clancy’s, also to create a connection across Cantonment Street to the Woolstores centre.

Such a complex could include retail at ground level, then offi ces above with residential on top.

However I expect the powers that be will still be arguing about height limits when I get carted out of here in a wooden box!

John EyreSouth Tce, South Fremantle.

Breaking silenceONE would hope that those protesting in recent weeks against the transport of rare earths from Fremantle (Herald, March 11, 2012) do not use any of the technologies that rely on the materials produced from those sources, (ie, mobile telephones, electric cars, iPads, etc) because that would be pure hypocrisy.

However, they do have one moot point. We should not be processing anywhere but here in WA. The technology and skills should remain here, employing Australians. For far too long we have accepted that we are a quarry. We need to start processing our raw materials here, rather than exporting the raw material overseas, making other people very rich in the process. The waste product from iron ore processing (slag) can be used to make green concrete, something those complaining about Cockburn Cement should be pushing. Exporting raw materials is also environmentally expensive and infrastructure costs are greatly increased.

The thorium by-product from this rare earth processing should be put to use in WA producing clean, green non-polluting electricity, far cheaper

Throw awayLAST week’s story (“All are for 49,” Herald March 31, 2012) dismissed Roel Loopers’ criticism of Cr Fittock by reporting his note to your journalist “grumped”.

Once you say that you say: silly old fart; not to be taken seriously. “It said” would be better. Throw-away lines should be thrown away. And while on the subject of non-residents signing a petition, our expensive CEO Graeme Mackenzie—citizen of Joondalup—should know the so-called outsiders were mostly shopping in Fremantle; often in Fremantle Woolies.

Ron and Dianne DavidsonFothergill St, Fremantle

Empty artsI WAS very surprised and disappointed that there was not a whisper about the Fremantle Street Arts Festival in today’s Herald (March 31), or last week for that matter.

This is a fabulous event which I look forward to immensely every year and I was expecting to fi nd a program

than presently produced from coal, gas, thermal and wind combinations. If we are to increase electric vehicle numbers on our roads, we are going to need massive increases in electricity generation. Thorium is the only viable non-polluting source available at present. Thorium reactors are also capable of utilising spent nuclear rods to maintain the fi ssion process, thus removing from this planet some of the waste that is creating massive storage and disposal problems. This process causes the spent rods to decay, rendering them safer for disposal.

It is time we stopped pandering to the minorities in our society, and started to look after the majority. The cost of living in Australia today can be sheeted home to those who foisted solar power projects on us, increasing the cost of electricity by $4.7 billion per year alone, carbon taxes, water restrictions and price increases and myriad other conditions imposed on the majority by the minority.

Current proposals to reduce road speeds by another 10km per hour is a classic example. The hole in the ozone layer is another classic. We spent billions removing CFCs from our homes and we still have the hole in the ozone layer, something hardly heard of nowadays.

It is long past time the silent majority found its voice.

and details about performers, possibly even an interview with one of the artists.

But not a word, not a photograph, nothing! What is going on? How is this keeping your readers informed? Do you think we in Cockburn aren’t interested?

Many of us only live 10 or 15 minutes out of Freo and it’s a major source of our entertainment. Apparently there was fantastic coverage in The West Australian, but we don’t all buy that paper.

At a time when there’s a lot of discussion about the need for a more vibrant Freo I think it’s important to remember that it’s the arts and artists who contribute enormously to that vibrancy. What’s the point of having fantastic artistic events if a whole lot of people don’t get to know about it?

Maggie Poole-JohnsonHamilton HillEditor’s note: We put all our

street arts stories on last weekend’s wraparound...forgetting that it wasn’t going to Cockburn. Sorry, Maggie. Make sure you come down and enjoy the shows.

EVEN more of a modern mystery is the Palladium

Picture Palace. Next time you visit or pass the Maya Indian Restaurant at 77 Market Street, imagine the excited crowds pressing through that entrance to spend hours watching “continuous pictures” from 1914 in the building behind at 22 Bannister Street. It was recently rebuilt as accommodation.

That theatre was also used for live variety and vaudeville performances in its early years. As with others, it brought employment to local pianists providing accompaniment to the silent silver screen. Behind that were a bank of toilets of the period, also recently demolished.

GardensFurther along at the modern

site of shops and villas at 16-20 Bannister, audiences enjoyed the ambience of open-air movies in the 1922-added “Summer Gardens”. Accessed also from Bannister Street, the gardens boasted an “upstairs” – a wooden gallery constructed at the rear, still partly there in 1976.

If ever there were a Fremantle theatre with a great and colourful history, it must be the Kings - right now the Metropolis. Nightclub patrons there today may not stop to think, but this has been one of the great South Terrace stories. It has been a dance hall, ice rink, car showrooms for about two decades and in the 1980’s, various nightclubs including Cargoes.

IN this second part of a three-week series COLIN

NICHOL takes a tour through Fremantle’s rich history as a performance centre. This week he wanders through the ghosts of the Palladium, the Kings, the Dalkeith Opera House and the Oddfellows.

Following the site’s use for variety shows, concerts and dramatic presentations as Court and Bouchard Company’s Ye Olde Englyshe Fayre between 1897 and 1898, the Pavilion operated there from 1899 to 1903.

That building was demolished for the construction of the 1500 audience capacity Dalkeith Opera House that opened the following year, three months ahead of His Majesty’s in Perth.

There are two stories as to why its name was changed a year later. One was that it became the Kings in honour of Edward VII but more likely, that Opera House seemed too up-market and discouraged patronage.

The YAL fi rst performed there in 1912. By 1914 it had become the Tivoli for Harry Richard’s national vaudeville circuit. Then back to Kings four years later to share vaudeville shows with Perth’s “Home of Vaudeville”, the Shaftsbury Theatre (built by James Gallop, ancestor of a past Premier).

Still the changes came ringing in. Around 1920 it was principally a cinema although it had also hosted Cole’s Bohemian Dramatic Company around that time. Then in 1946 Victor Gubgub became a prominent Fremantle identity when he bought the building and set up his Ford dealership as Victor Motors.

In North Fremantle, their Town Hall was the frequent location for entertainments, in more recent decades called the Community Arts Centre when the Now and Then Theatre Company performed there. Temporarily used by the Masons until their own hall was built in Mason Street. From 1918 until 1929 fi lms were shown there, resuming in 1936 under the name of the Arcadia.

From commencement of publication in 1867, the original Fremantle Herald maintained a lively interest in, and promotion of, amateur theatricals. It commented upon a “clever entertainment” in August of 1867 by Mr and Mrs Case, he the musician and she as actress, danseuse and singer at the Oddfellows Hall.

In William Street, it is now the site of the Best And Less store, adjacent Rosie O’Grady’s, that itself converted from the 1867 Federal Hotel. Between 1898 and 1910 it operated as the Bijou Theatre. But by 1868 local entertainment had become virtually non-existent and the Herald was complaining of a lack of amusements.

Fair go goesWHAT a blow for those in need with the loss of the Fremantle GP clinic (Herald, March 10, 2012).

The wealthiest state in the country being unable to service its most needy constituents is becoming the common story under the Barnett government. But where is the outrage from the opposition about this chronic disregard for those in need?

Since this pernicous government has been in power its agenda has been

Unfunny Fool’sI FIND the remarks from Ollia Forp, “but I suppose fat people on the beach should be careful just in case,” to be extremely derogatory and offensive to “fat” people.

Peddle for PettittI AM writing in response to “Pollie for pedallers,” (Herald, March 31, 2012) and in support of mayor Brad Pettitt and Fremantle council.

I appreciate that there are issues with cycling infrastructure in Fremantle but I suggest those venting their frustrations on Senator Ludlam’s iPhone app might want to also take a moment to refl ect on the positives.

Fremantle is one of the more progressive cycling-focused councils in WA. Three recent infrastructure developments come to mind:

• Installing a left-turn bicycle lane from Port Beach Road to Bracks Street (following an approach by a cyclist). Try and get that sort of timely response from Perth city council!

• Installation of green lanes on Parry Street which has changed driver behaviour including Transperth drivers (an issue by the way ignored by Adele Carles when brought to her attention)

• The removal of a car parking bay

Bountiful HarvestI WOULD like to take this public opportunity to send a huge thank you to the wonderfully community-minded people who contributed to Hilton Harvest’s Twilight Fair last Saturday.

Many may not realise that a team of 30 volunteers from the Hilton Harvest community organised the event and worked on the various stalls and booths, 53 performers willingly gave their time to put on a fantastic show, and numerous others baked cakes, bottled jams, made soaps and potted up seedlings to donate to the cause!

It is truly heart-warming to see such community spirit alive and well in Hilton.

Helen WhitkinHilton Harvest Community Garden Extend apology

BEING the great-grandson of WWI “enemy aliens” in WA, I congratulate Peter Tagliaferri and Melissa Parke on their calls for a full apology for the internship of Italian and other Australian “aliens” during WWII (Herald, March 31, 2012).

However, any apology should also extend to those who were interned or put under house arrest during WWI.

Hundreds of German, Austrian and Croatian permanent Australian residents were similarly subjected to internship, notably on Rottnest Island or house arrest for the majority of the duration of the fi rst world war, even though they had lived peacefully in Australia for years and had nothing to do with the war at all.

It should be noted that no Italian nor Japanese residents were interned during WWI in Australia as both countries had joined with the allies on that occasion.

Try getting these sorts of outcomes in Perth, where cycling infrastructure gets removed, not developed.

For sure we need more changes but let’s work with the progressive Fremantle council rather than simply dishing it out.

to cut everything that is vital to keep communities functioning.

The basic services that a modern society needs are being sold or dismantled at an alarming pace. And yet the opposition has been almost mute until recently.

Where are the concerned pillars of our society? There is a deafening silence from the heads of all the major religions other than in terms of charity which should never be the mainstay of funding for the community’s needs.

Where are the academics? Are they just reiterating the status quo? Don’t they also have some responsibility to the community who pays their salaries? Any notion of fair go is sounding more like a voice from long time ago.

MORE than 110 people are now infected by Ross River Virus in the southern suburbs—including 12 from Fremantle, the fi rst recorded Freo cases in two years.

The Herald reported early last month that residents living near Thomsons Lake in Beeliar had been warned to wear insect spray and cover up, following 62 cases.

The WA health department’s fi gures until the end of March revealed 99 cases of RRV in Cockburn alone—almost fi ve

SPAIN’S Greenman caused a minor riot in Joondalup recently, being escorted out of a mall by guards after jumping atop an ATM.

People shrieked at the launch of Fremantle’s Street Arts Festival too—with laughter—as Greenman helped kick off the Easter long weekend at Little Creatures Loft on Tuesday night. Acting mayor Jon Strachan slipped on a banana skin, telling the crowd there would be just 1000 (not the expected 100,000) people in Freo for the festival.

“I didn’t want to make the same mistake as ISAF and add zeroes,” he said to appreciative guffaws from a packed room that included bags of local pollies and business people.

Around $1.5 million pours into tills of local business during the Street Arts Festival, Cr Strachan said, rubbing his hands gleefully.

Port city streets will be alive with colour, music, juggling, clowning and trapeze acts from Saturday April 7 to Monday April 9. But not many buskers, ironically enough.

“SOMEONE has to stand up for the animals,” an unrepentant Lee Reid said following his release from Fremantle police station Wednesday morning.

Charged with trespass, the Fremantle local had been amongst a group several protestors using homemade thumb-cuffs to lock themselves to gates at the port and aboard live sheep carrier Al-Shuwaikh.

“I was on board in order to get footage and incriminating evidence [of cruel treatment],” Mr Reid, who didn’t cuff himself, told the Herald.

Four other arrests were also made. By the time the Herald left the site police were still trying to unlock two more, who most likely also face charges.

The protestors had been quietly dropped off at the port around 2am.

Police were quickly on the scene when they were spotted, reportedly by an off-duty policeman who’d been fi shing.

Four of the group are Fremantle residents says Forest Rescue member Cameron Johnson, a local.

The protest has been staged to rekindle the live export debate and highlight animal cruelty that occurs in Australia, not just overseas. “[It] starts here, we are allowing this to happen,” he told the Herald. “We can’t condemn [overseas markets], animals should he slaughtered here in a humane fashion.”

Not at all sheepish

times the number from this time last year.Department acting medical

entomologist Peter Neville says Perth is heading for a record outbreak of RRV.

“Areas of great concern include suburbs with substantial natural wetlands and bushland,” he says.

The sheer size of the mosquitoes’ natural breeding habitat across WA makes it virtually impossible to reduce populations to levels that don’t pose some risk to public health.

Symptoms include painful or swollen joints, fever, fatigue and headaches and can last for months.

$335Klopper clangerREGARDING UWA comes a Klopper (Herald, March 24, 2012): Some people may like Klopper buildings from a distance but try living next to one.

I live next to the “funky” limestone Klopper house in Samson Street. It is built on a battleaxe block at the rear.

The “massive limestone vaulted roof” may be very nice for the owners but ensures the house is built to maximum permitted height.

It is very tall and the living area is upstairs. Consequently I have lost hours of morning sun from my beautiful garden and most of my backyard privacy—both sight and sound privacy.

There is no room for a garden and the block is covered in paving so the house only adds to the urban heat sink. The limestone walls glare in the summer sun and the zincalume roof adds to the heat and glare.

What may be a dream home for Klopper’s clients has become my nightmare.

Keep it quietRE: Your article, A mother’s pain, Herald, March 24, 2012.

It is disappointing the Herald has chosen to publish comment regarding this case, that is currently subject to proceedings in the Children’s Court.

One parent contacting the media regarding child protection issues leads to an opportunity for presenting a ‘he said, she said’ version of a very complex issue. The facts of this case are not so skewed, as your newspaper chose to portray them.

Child protection work occurs amid situations of high confl ict and often with contradictory information being provided by the various parties involved—each with their own interests and perspectives.

It is not in the best interest of the child or the family for your newspaper to continue to publish personal opinion about an ongoing matter. In fact, is quite damaging to all concerned and exploits all parties during what is a vulnerable and challenging time for them.

The department will not be drawn into managing this case via the Herald.

Terry MurphyDirector GeneralDepartment for Child ProtectionEditor’s note: We disagree. Far

too many issues are shoved under the carpet on the basis they’re before the court, a tribunal, a commission, an inquiry or whatever else. The mother believes she is being treated unjustly and she has every right to express her view. You say it’s a complex issue but refuse to tell us how and why and expect us to simply trust you. You’ve been given the opportunity to comment—it’s up to you whether you take it.

Pollution risk claim a load of sh...DOES anyone else think it odd that we were forbidden to place red fl owers in the Swan River because of pollution risk and yet in 2010 the faeces and urine of 3.8 million sheep and cattle from Australia alone were allowed to be dumped at sea?

And let’s not forget the 40,000 carcasses per annum that get dispatched at sea each year courtesy of the same trade. For 30-plus years this has been occurring.

The red fl owers were designed to represent blood from the defenceless sheep, cattle, goats and camels that many of us lining Stirling Bridge last year would rather have slaughtered on our home shores, if at all, rather than mishandled by overseas workers: Untrained, poorly paid men who seem to dislike and fear animals. A vet even witnessed a tongue being cut from a live cow (its throat had just been cut but it was still able to raise its head from the ground). The tongue was quickly hidden in the worker’s clothing to take home because pay is so minimal.

And now the live export industry is trying hard to shift emphasis from the animal cruelty that was exposed publicly to now environmental benefi ts of farming and of eating red meat. Huge sums of money are now being poured into green-washing the reputation of live export/farming/stations by way of heavy advertising, even on airline fl ights. If farmers are saying in this how much they care for land and water, how then can so much live export pollution be thrown in to the oceans for so long?

Just ask any local export agency what happens to the animal waste. As well, it contaminates the food and water troughs of the animals from upper decks on ships. Some ships have as many as 14 decks.

What is the hygiene (let alone comfort) for the hundreds of thousands of animals on board?

And what about faecal and urine waste from trucks?

A ship can hold from 25,000 to 125,000 sheep (less if cattle). Some sail in and out of Fremantle eight times a year. That can make 800,000 sheep on one ship per annum (eg, one out at Gage Roads as I write). How many truckloads of sheep and

herald letterscattle is that on our roads and with large volumes of waste?

While some dead and nearly dead animals are winched out from the ship pens and put in the huge holding bins or in mincers for disposal, some are inaccessible by the hoist and so are carved there and then in close proximity and in full view of other animals, and removed in parts.

For more than 30 years this has been going on and with no addressing of raw sewage (gross animal cruelty is a separate matter). How too can ship’s crew and ships not need to be fumigated to reduce spread of disease? Shall I guess that cost could be inhibiting the agencies to address raw sewage as it might make the product too dear overseas in lieu of our chilled meat export? Strange that some Gulf governments subsidise live imports but tax chilled meat imports.

I make no apologies for this raw information because it is right before our eyes and yet the agencies and government want it to be invisible. As Paul McCartney said, “if slaughterhouses had glass walls”. Are they frightened of us really knowing?

Our roads and ports are a major part in the horror chain.

Jan RoddaHubble St, East Fremantle

Do architects ever consider the neighbours when designing their monumental houses?

Fremantle council is also indifferent to neighbours’ concerns by allowing such out-of-scale developments in backyards.

YOGA OF KNOWLEDGE & WISDOM“Awakening the Infi nite Potential Within”

Scientifi c researches have proved that humans use less than 10% of their actual potential. Isn’t it shocking? Th is has further dropped down in this highly so called technological and materialist age. Here

everybody is running and chasing each other for more money or for more power.

In this world of hurry & fl urry have we actually achieved the real satisfaction? How to realize the best of the potential of knowledge and wisdom within us?

speaker and expert in the fi eld of personal, managerial & spiritual development. Th roughout his speaking career Swami Swaroopananda has held his audiences‚ adults, youth, and children alike‚ spellbound by his amazingly practical and extremely user friendly approach to Spirituality. He reminds us that there is a greater and more compelling Truth that provides the solutions to all our problems, enabling us to live a truly happy and positive life.

Swamiji is a rare individual who has experienced the peaks of success in the West and discovered the depths of spiritual wisdom of the East. Swamiji is constantly guiding & inspiring successful leaders from organisations from New Delhi to New York and Sydney

What are the means by which we can transform our knowldege to wisdom? How can we transcend the limited to embrace the unlimited? Or can ordinary mortals evercomprehend the immortal reality?

Swami Swaroopananda of Chinmaya Mission will be covering the realities of the potential of knowledge and wisdom and its realisation in this world during his forthcoming visit to Perth in April 2012. Anyone who is searching for peace in the midst of restless living will benefi t from an upcoming series of lectures on yoga of knowledge and wisdom held by Swami Swaroopananda.

Few men are called to serve humanity the way Swami Swaroopananda does. Fewer actually achieve the unique impact and response that Swamiji has. A disciple of the world-renowned Master of Vedanta, and champion of India’s spiritual wisdom Swami Chinmayananda, Swami Swaroopananda left his family’s thriving business in Hong Kong at an early age to seek what he now calls “Real answers to real problems”. He was convinced that beyond our everyday, superfi cial joys and sorrows, there was something more‚ something higher and something more satisfying.

Worried about keeping your home safe andsecure while you’re on holidays,

at work or even in the house? The most important item in making your home safe from intruders is often overlooked when security is considered. Of course it’s your meterbox! The meterbox is like the heart of your home - without power you have no lights, no cordless phone, no elec-tricity and in some cases no security systemThieves can switch off your power at the meterbox just to see if you have an active alarm system. Don’t rely on back-up batteries - they frequently fail be-cause the use by date has been overlooked. Thieves would much rather go elsewhere than rob your home if the meterboxes are professionally locked up by the Meterbox Man. Locking your meterbox is recommended by the Police, Western Power, Alinta Gas, RAC and all insurance companies. So for peace of mind and a safer home call the Meterbox Man.

THE road-to-rail campaigners say a simple rubber pad could dull the sound of screeching freight trains through the port city.

Gibson Park local Barry Healy says rail wagons fi tted with passive-steered bogies used recently by the port authority, could be the answer to reducing the number of trucks barrelling down High Street into Fremantle. He says a rubber pad placed between the wheel and the axle, stopping the squealing of rails fl anges, could be music to inner-city residents.

“The Road to Rail campaign has always looked for solutions to the freight problem that work for everyone, and the noise around the West End was high on our agenda,” Mr Healy said.

by JON SNELGROVE

THERE was a time when music festivals were islands of self-rule, where for a few precious hours all the rules and regulations set down by “The Man” could be swept aside.

For brief, dream-like moments, like-minded people were bonded together sharing the same communal demand: “Give us some rock and roll and give it to us loud!”.

Today’s music festival is a very different animal. Compulsory bag searches, carbon offsets, drug-sniffer dogs, sustainability, recycling stations and lights out at 10 as we all have work in the morning. Today’s music festival is no longer an oasis of rebellion or self-expression, more a supervised and choreographed corporate command on how to enjoy yourself.

John Fogerty, this year ’s headline act at the ninth West Coast Blues and Roots Festival, embraced the recycling effort, running through a crowd-pleasing

“If we don’t take care of all the problems then the government will just continue to play off one community sector against another. Residents can stand by the line

and compare the noise of the old-fashioned wagons and the three new ones.

“They will hear for themselves that these new wagons are a big part of the solution.”

Mr Healy says the port should ensure all freight trains passing through Fremantle feature the modifi cations.

“And then they have to eliminate the noise of the L-class locomotives that are currently used.”

Fremantle Inner City Residents Association member Rob Harrison (pictured, left) says using bogies to stop the squealing isn’t as simple as it sounds.

“The bogies have made a difference, but I think it’s the combination of the bogies and the lubrications of the lines..

“But we welcome anything that would reduce the noise, because the squealing around the Round House and the trains leaving town is pretty bad.”

singalong of recycled Credence hits. But the songs are now nearly 50 years old and suffer from years of being overplayed. Nothing new to see here, move along please.

By contrast Buddy Guy sounded as fresh as the fi rst time he’d ever strapped on the guitar. At 74 years young his set was filled with energy, excitement and joy which infected the capacity crowd in the big top. He has allowed his music to develop and evolve over the years, making it feel as if it was being performed for the fi rst time. Backed by a man mountain of a drummer and a tight rhythm section, like any master of his craft, Buddy Guy made it all look effortless.

Earlier in the day Steve Earle had hinted at the rebel within, performing a solo set fi lled with outlaws, injustice and heartbreak. He later turned up on stage with Crosby Stills and Nash and later still with the festival’s stand-out act—the Pogues. Lead singer Shane McGowan was of course entirely irrigated with the horizontal lubricant by the time he made

the stage. We would expect nothing less. Stumbling, slurring his words and constantly wandering off stage, McGowan was received like a long-lost friend. Let’s have a drink and do some catching up.

And catch up they did, the Pogues presented a whirlwind set of carefully orchestrated chaos, only pausing for a poignant and uplifting version of “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda”. For the rest of their set it was impossible to stand still as the big top pulsed to their Irish rhythms. They were joined onstage for a rousing fi nale by Steve Earle and a few of The Specials who had no doubt wandered by to see what all the noise was about. Here was the ghost of festivals past; raucous, unpredictable, loud, rowdy and free.

The Pogues, Steve Earle and Buddy Guy taught us a valuable lesson, some things are worth recycling, others should be left to slowly fade away.

CHILD protection offi cers failed twice this week to reunite a mother and her child, claiming the child was too distressed.

Daniele (not her real name) was due to meet her child, who suffers autism, in Fremantle for an hour on Monday—30 days after the WA child protection department handed the child over to her ex-husband, its father.

Carers had been unable to settle the child on their way from school to meet Daniele, who had been waiting with colouring-in books, learning charts and a photograph of herself. The meeting was rescheduled for Wednesday.

But on Tuesday, the DCP contacted Daniele and cancelled the next day’s meeting, saying the child was too distressed to see her in the lead-up to Easter.

WYOLA CLUB manager Phil Douglas and his wife Linda Lyons have had a small victory in their court battles against WA’s consumer protection department.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to issue an injunction barring the pair’s lawyer Haydn Robinson from representing them in looming hearings over their purchase of two club properties.

Lawyers for department commissioner Anne Driscoll argued Mr Robinson had a confl ict of interest, raising eight objections including that he had a fi duciary interest with the club but was representing Mr Douglas and Ms Lyons.

The department’s lawyers also argued that he was likely to be called as a witness.

Master Craig Sanderson agreed Mr Robinson had a relationship with the club because he’d prepared a lease for the two properties.

“What aspect of the fi duciary duty as between the club and Mr Robinson has been breached by the acts referred to in counsel’s list? In my view, the answer is, ‘None’,” Master Sanderson wrote in his judgement.

“I am not satisfi ed Mr Robinson ought to be restrained from acting for the second and third defendants in the primary proceedings because to do so would see him breach some aspect of his fi duciary duty to the club.”

He said Mr Douglas had also told the court he and his wife did not intend to call Mr Robinson as a witness.

ADELE CARLES wants a shelter built to help

prostitutes escape sex work. The independent Fremantle MP says the Barnett government’s prostitution bill is likely to pass, so she’s trying to force amendments to help women caught in the industry—and with a couple of religiously fundamental government MPs preparing to vote against the bill, her vote could be crucial. “This is an industry that makes money out of the sale of women’s bodies for men’s sexual gratifi cation and often involves violence and long-term physical and emotional harm to women,” she said. Ms Carles’ amendments also seek to get the criminal element of the bill shifted onto users, rather than the women, and increase penalties for pimps employing under-age girls. However, her efforts may have already been trumped by Janet Woollard, with the Alfred Cove MP telling the Herald on Thursday she had in-principle support from Peter Abetz and Graeme Jacobs who’d threatened to cross the fl oor to defeat the bill, for her own amendments, which include a cap on the number of brothels allowed and a sunset clause outlawing brothels in fi ve years. She is due to meet attorney general Christian Porter who she says has indicated a “willingness to consider her amendments.”

THE WA Circus School has a new general

manager, but she’s got a little more than six months before the organisation gets booted out of its Old Customs House home of 20 years. Lunabella Mrozik Gawler says she’s been involved in the circus scene over east for years, but is keen to prevent local talent heading there. Not having a manager has hampered the school’s lobbying over its eviction at the hands of Artsource, although it’s held a successful fundraising night and launched an online petition. Local performer Ross Vegas said he’d discovered the wording of the petition could prevent it from being presented to state parliament, although he’d got advice it was still worthwhile. Anyone interested can add their name at http://savethecircusspace.org.

LABOR’S Fremantle candidate Simone McGurk

wants environment minister Bill Marmion to decide whether he’s going to allow Magellan Metals to resume shipping lead through the port. She says he’s sat on a report into Magellan’s operations for more than six months and enough is enough. “Is the minister waiting until after the state election in March next year to make a decision about Magellan’s operating conditions?” she ponders. Mr Marmion told PerthNow last week he wouldn’t be rushed and won’t even guarantee a decision within a year.

week that feedback from the department indicated the child’s behaviour had improved since its March 6 intervention.

Daniele says she is devastated at the no-shows. A devout Catholic, she wanted to see her child this weekend, but that is unlikely while a tug-of-war battle over who should have custody is played out in slow motion in the children’s and family courts.

The department claims Daniele has a brain injury that prevents her taking proper care of the child.

On Wednesday morning, results of Daniele’s regular brain scans shows nothing wrong with the woman, who suffers other partial disabilities.

Daniele took out a two-year violence restraining order against the ex-husband after he was given a spent conviction for aggravated assault in 2010.

He assaulted her for accidently knocking over a set top box while he watched TV and she vacuumed the house.

Her injuries, which included bruises across her upper body and arms, were photographed by police and published in the Herald last week.

The ex-husband, who is seeking full custody of the child, denies being violent towards Daniele.

He’s told the court he was provoked by her abuse: “I held her shoulders and shook her a little.”

The Fremantle Magistrate’s Court lifted the VRO against the ex-husband last month, four months early, without the presence or knowledge of Daniele, who had primary care of the child until the DCP intervened.

Her lawyer describes as highly questionable claims about Daniele’s mental state.

The ex-husband claims Daniele suffers depression and stress, and that her, “capacity to care for [the child] full time has, and is diminishing due to her acquired brain injury, mental and physical health disabilities”.

ASKED to list 10 things they love about 196 Forrest Street,

Fremantle, the vendors came up with 11.

Top of the list is “a happy positive vibe”. Last, but not least, the limestone building blocks which give a “warm welcoming” glow as you turn in the drive, they say.

“These walls have seen lots of joy and heard much laughter from our seven-year stint out of its 109 years,” one said. “I’m looking forward to passing on this old beauty to someone else to enjoy.”

BEING lost, looking for the non-existent number 41 on a

street on the wrong side of Booragoon (who would have thought there were two streets with “Ramble” in the name?”) might have prompted the agent’s impromptu suburb history lesson.

The Booragoon precinct (the “Dress Circle”) was mostly developed in the 1980s and homes here historically are rarely for sale—especially when renovated.

This house dates back to 1984 but has had substantial renovations, particularly in the

AT HOMEBRAD JEFFERIES

kitchen, which is several metres deep and packed with modern furnishings, plus enough bench space to prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner at the same time.

Certain charming designs, such as the sunken family room and formal dining and living rooms hint at the home’s era.

There’s no shortage of space with plenty in the family room for couches and a pool table, if desired.

The big backyard too,

benefi ts from its age with mature fruit trees and a large and healthy patch of grass.

Side access for a boat, and a chunk of paving earmarked for a decent sized pool, will appeal to the water-inclined.

At the top of the stairs is a main bedroom, as large as you see in just-built mansions.

It’s perched up amongst soaring trees in the front yard and the gentle swaying of the leaves was pretty blissful.

The kids will be fi ghting to get their hands on the two bedrooms at the back of the top fl oor.

Both look out onto a window-level vine-covered pergola, so with the curtains

open it feels they’re perched in a tree house.

Another bedroom is on the small side, but it still has a built-in robe with space for a bed and desk.

It’s not a coincidence homes around here fetch higher prices than other parts of the suburb.

It’s perfectly placed just behind Garden City and Wireless Hill—but away from traffi c—down the street from Booragoon primary, and a short walk to the aquatic centre and Len Shearer Reserve.

FOODJENNY D’ANGERFFFFFFJE

YOU can’t fault the service at a cafe where the coffee arrives

before you get back to your table.

Unfortunately I’d dawdled a tad too long and my dining companions insisted cappuccino hadn’t been ordered and sent it back.

Unfazed, the obliging wait staff at Melville’s Delicious Fingers were still smiling as they brought back a fresh one—real service with a smile.

Mum lives nearby so, having tested the place and enjoyed a couple of delicious lunches with other people, I’d decided it was safe to take the picky darling for a meal.

And why not include the mother-in-law (over from the UK) too, just to keep it interesting.

Previously I’d tried the Intriguing Indian ($13.50): A fl avoursome burger that captures the mystery of the sub-continent with a blend of coriander, cumin, star anise and garam marsala.

It comes in fl atbread with a sweet pumpkin condiment with chilli, ginger, cumin, garlic and

yoghurt, a lip-licking Mumbai beauty.

The menu is full of alliterative, exotic burgers, including a Menacing Mexican (named for its hard-hitting jalapeno chillies, rather than nasty drug lords).

Then there’s the Mysterious Moroccan: Lamb with cinnamon, ginger and mixed spices. Or the Exotic Egyptian, a vegetarian delight with lentils, dates, capsicum, almonds and sunfl ower seeds.

Mum started with an iced coffee, cream and icecream ($6). She judges all eateries on their coffee, hot or iced, and this one won the slurp of approval.

Getting down to the food I went for the Thai chicken patty special ($9). They were pretty damn fi ne, with just the right amount of lemon grass and coriander, and arrived with a crisp side salad.

Mum’s vegetable patties ($9) were light and delicate

but lacked the oomph I’d come to expect. They weren’t fl avoursome enough to hold the interest of a fi nicky palate and the second was palmed off on me.

The MIL went for the vegetarian frittata ($10). She complained about the monstrous size of the serve but I noticed that like a US Marine she left none behind.

“It was very enjoyable,” the UK chef confessed, looking a little unhappy at not fi nding something to complain about.

What’s a mum’s day outing without cake and there were plenty to choose from.

MIL and I went for the sweet, rich and chewy caramel pie with crunchy peanut topping ($6.50) while mum managed to scoff a sharp lemon slice ($3.50) and we took home a huge slice of gluten-free chocolate cake for dad.

The service throughout was friendly and effi cient, something a few posher eateries I could name could take a tip from.

THE TITANIC STORY

On the night of the 14th April 1912, the S.S Titanic, which was on its maiden voyage to New York, struck an Iceberg. Less than three hours later the ship sank beneath the Atlantic Ocean with a loss of some 1500 lives. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of this historic and tragic event, tune in to Radio Fremantle 107.9 FM on Friday 13th April at 8-30 am for the complete story.

WHEN Fremantle photographer Saschka was

growing up it was a regular experience for both parents to be in the garden, or sitting on the couch in the nude.

“I fi nd it very sad how uncomfortable so many people are with nudity,” she says, “I grew up with both my parents being naked for most of the day.

“I like to think that by photographing nudes not only will my models benefi t but, also the people viewing my work.

“It’s a slow and steady attempt at instilling in people a feeling of comfort towards

naked strangers. It amazes me how different body types photograph. You never know how it’s going to look until you’re there shooting and trying to create the vision in your head.

“[It’s] a gamble and a challenge but the human body always turns out just as wonderful or better than expected when photographed nude.”

For her models’ comfort Saschka often strips down herself to take the photos, as she did for a recent photoshoot with 13 naked women re-interpreting Da Vinci’s The Last Supper.

It’s a deliberate way to break down barriers and recalibrate what can be a power imbalance.

“I think in this day and age people are told what beauty is and in turn they are instilled with an ideal that surrounds

Unveiling our naked truths that,” she says. “I have never

really understood why so many people feel alienated in their naked body.

“It is the natural form of every person, and I personally fi nd every person beautiful in their own skin.”

Saschka’s exhibition Secret Places is part of the FotoFreo open exhibition program and is at Lick Art Space until April 15.

“A secret place is somewhere people feel like they are the only ones who know of its existence,” Saschka says, “somewhere to feel at home and alone within the urban sprawl, somewhere forgotten or left to rot that once had signifi cance, but no longer.

“These places have memories, I enjoy creating photos that convey the feeling I get from these places in a surreal and mysterious manner.”

shortartsDOG’S DAY—When they’re not being chased down by

grumpy rangers, the dogs at South Beach have a pretty good life. Now they’ve been immortalised in ink and will be hanging on the walls of Early Work gallery in South Terrace until April 22. Hangdog is by artistic dog owner Megan Anderson, who reckons mutts are the perfect refl ection of her work—playful, uncomplicated, naive and a little messy.

RICH HISTORY—They’re rich, they’re famous and

they’re coming back. In the early ‘90s Rich ‘n’ Famous were the folksy equivalent of Accadacca—conquering the world, festival by festival until someone choked on their own syncopation and it all unravelled. Actually, they all just went on to bigger and better careers, which has made putting their 20th anniversary reunion

together a whole lot easier. They’ve even lured Kavisha Mazzella back from Melbourne to join Lee Buddle, Peter Grayling, John Reed, Reuben Kooperman and Gary Burke on stage at the Fremantle Workers’ Club on Saturday April 21. Tix ($20 or $15 for members) available from the bar at the club Wednesdays to Sundays 11am–6pm (sign up for membership while you’re there), via email [email protected], by phone 9335 1840 or from Bodkins Bootery in the West End.

NIFTY—If you can’t make it to the Fairbridge Festival

don’t despair. Two of the top acts, Shooglenifty (Scotland) and The Chipolatas (England), are joining together for a night of mayhem and madness at the Fly By Night in Fremantle on Wednesday April 18. Tix $25 from www.fl ybynight.org or 9430 5976. You can even try your luck on the door, which opens 7.30pm.

STRATOSPHERIC—The weather can be

unpredictable, just ask photographer Robbie Money. He was going to whack a few pictures up in a gallery for FotoFreo, but before he knew it there was a hot change and now he’s had to put on a full-scale exhibition, Cloudscaping. Money’s a prospector and had happened on a speccy rainbow while hunting down some tantalum in Tanzania, which provided the inspiration for the rest of the show.

A CHORUS of relieved sighs can be heard from parents every Saturday

morning at Mt Lawley’s Alexander Park tennis club as Rock ‘n’ Toddle begins.

The fun, educational and interactive gigs for kids are from the rock-pop genre and are a reprieve from the standard nursery rhyme set .

A professionally trained ‘star performer’ sings and encourages ‘mini-moshers’ (children up to 7) and parents to participate in simulated gig activities using props, puppets and stardust.

The 50-minute gigs are every Saturday at 9.30am during school terms at the refurbished tennis club in Menora (with new café).

Mini-moshersThemes are repeated for a

few weeks to enable the kids to get familiar with the tracks and the skills set embedded in the activities. Bond with your ‘mini-moshers’, sip lattes, chat with friends, have a dance, or send the partner/grandparents with your kids while you have

a lie in! There’s no need to book

and no term fees! Under-1s are free and then its $10 per mini mosher.

WARNING: Don’t call any electrican until you read this

Not all Electricians are the same... most contractors don’t turn up when they say, if at all & when they do they are often rude, unpleasant & leave you with an unfair bill, a messy

house & feeling really annoyed.Hi, I’m Dave from “My Sparky”. I know good, reliable tradies are

hard to fi nd, that’s why I guarantee you’ll have me arrive

on time. I’ll be courteous, respectful & in uniform. I will

only do the best quality work - no short cuts, then clean up after

the job & leave you with a smile. If you’re not happy at the end

you’ll receive $50 cash, on me.

April 7 - April 14, 2012

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)It’s a strange week. Everyone is standing in their corners, waiting for

the other to make the fi rst move. If anyone is going to be tempted to make that fi rst move, it’s likely to be you. It’s not so simple however. You will fi nd yourself evenly matched. Be quizzical.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)Though there are odd planetary placements hovering around, you are

apparently able to weave your way around the shifting sands. Find your way through the emotional thickets, with surefooted instinct. Most of what is happening is posturing. Don’t be bluffed.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)There’s a lot going on and you’re a key player, but it’s not proving all

that easy to fi gure out exactly what is going on. It may be that you are trying too hard to fi nd fancy explanations. The answers to people’s behaviour might be simple. Allow for differences.

CANCER (June 22 – July 22)The Moon begins the week as full as a boot, in Libra. It shines a light of

crystal clarity on the uniqueness and difference of each person involved in this piece of theatre called life. The big challenge is to keep social organisation cohesive, yet honour individuality.

LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)Most of the planets are in strong positions and at cross purposes

with each other. This makes for a scenario where everybody is full of energy but in stasis. Like cats with their hair up, friends and strangers are skirting around each other. Be generous and accepting.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)As you become stronger in your individuality, so do others. This leads to

there being a group of powerful people wondering how to manage tasks that require humility and co-operation. Some moments are simply diffi cult. Accept the challenge and know that it will pass.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)At the beginning of the week, the Moon is full in Libra. This charges you

up like a light bulb. It charges everybody else up too. There’s a lot of contrary energy around. Rather than trying to resolve differences, fi nd the harmony that comes through accepting difference.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21) The full Moon in Libra creates an unusual atmosphere. Rather than

the kind of smooth, cultured harmony you would expect, there’s the feeling of a collection of alpha males and alpha females in a room, all very switched on and wondering how to co-exist. Be amazed.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)It is very clear to you that the ground is shifting beneath everybody’s feet. This

makes all and sundry hyper-alert, hyper-protective and somewhat on edge. Now is not an opportune moment to allow an arrow of ill-considered truth to slip from your bow. Hold your tongue.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)If you slip into an authoritarian mode, you will fi nd yourself suddenly playing

the role of lynchpin for everybody else’s present state of stuckness. Dig into the wisdom that you carry underneath all the ‘should’s’ - and you’ll help to unclog a logjam.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)Keep your eye on the future as a realm of possibility. If you carry a sense of

possibility, this moment will become richer. The full Moon in Libra and the general strangeness of the moment, inspires you, just as it spooks your buddies. Translate this moment for others.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)It’s a time of shifting sands. It won’t last for long, so see it out. There’s

no need to trek off by yourself in some heroic effort to rescue anybody. Rather than get yourself lost through misbegotten exertion, be patient in the understanding that this too shall pass.
